Beckham: LA's Newest Star
For David Beckham, it will be a new start. For Los Angeles, it's a new star. Beckham will join the LA Galaxy in August after his contract ends with Real Madrid this June.
Beckham released the following statement on Thursday:
'This week, Real Madrid asked me to make a decision regarding my future and the offer to extend my contract by a further two seasons.
'After discussing several options with my family and advisers to either stay here at Madrid or join other major British and European clubs, I have decided to join the Los Angeles Galaxy and play in the MLS from August this year.
'I would like to thank the supporters and people of Madrid who have made my family and I feel so welcome in my time here, making this an extremely difficult decision to make.
'I have enjoyed my time in Spain enormously and I am extremely grateful to the club for giving me the opportunity to play for such a great team and their amazing fans.
'I am proud to have played for two of the biggest clubs in football and I look forward to the new challenge of growing the world's most popular game in a country that is as passionate about its sport as my own.
'For the rest of this season I will continue to give 100% to my coach, team mates and fans as I believe Fabio Capello will bring this club and its supporters the success they truly deserve.'

The 250 million dollar diver with sissy punches and kicks. Los Angeles is a good place for him. It's full of yuppies just like him.

Seems like a decent business move for all involved. Becks gets paid big $$$ until he's 36. He also moves into a new market, instantly becoming the sport's biggest star in the US. The MLS gets a famous face, an ambassador for the league. maybe that will sell them a few more tickets, earn more lucrative sponsorships, more TV coverage. And LA is obviously the best town for him.
But I wonder about a couple things:
1) Will Beckham really make long-term difference?
2) Will sports fans in the US even care?
3) Will this lead to NY or DC signing other big name European talents?
Also, I'm not sure Beckham will dominate or show any magic on the field. It's been awhile since he did anything of note, besides the odd free kick here or there. MLS needs more help than that.
The deal has a lot of potential. Could be the start of something bigger for MLS. It could also blow up in their face.

I'm not crazy about him as a player, but the MLS needs a boost, and he'll spark it,the mls should raise the salary cap ,so other players can come.Overall it's a good move

come on guys, it is about increasing customers, viewers, sales, etc.. regardless of his play quality at the moment. MLS will be in the news in several markets.
I say good move.

It's a big gamble as I really don't think Los Angeles even has that kind of money to pay Beckham. They are not signing him to play. They are signing him for his image. They are banking on what they feel will be the money they stand to make while he is here. 250 million is 50 million a year which works out to around 500 thousand per week. Somebody here said history will repeat it'self. That could happen. The old NASL had many players with far more star image like Pele & Cryff & the NASL had good turnouts at the vast majority of games & sad to say still went belly up. Either way I'm willing to bet Beckham is having a good laugh right now as there are many teams, managers, fellow players, & fans that have been saying for some time he's over it & now chances are he will be the highest paid player in the world. Not bad for somebody who's known as a dead ball specialist.

I think that Beckham had help making the choice to go to the MLS. Could it be that he felt that not winning big cups was not living up to the teams talent and potential? Good job MLS!!!

Becks will help the MLS. As far as poor form...he'll be a top player and a model pro. I was gutted when he left United, hope he does well and can't wait till he comes to Columbus.

Obviously, money, image, the Icon, and all that played a huge part in the deal. What I think you guys are missing is, he is already the most skilled player in MLS. He will add a touch of class to the quality of play. What MLS needs to focus on is to ride this momentum and bring in a 2nd & 3rd big name. Ronaldo, Figo, would create similar buzz. The country is hungry for top quality football and these guys can provide it.

i think the mls made a really good move by signing David, because now there are more chances for other good talented player to make theire way to the mls, and s really going to change even the us national team, because these guy going to have a chance to play with some very good player, and i thin k that going to make them better, they really need more challenge in mls

There are pro's & con's regarding Beckham coming to the MLS & in particular Los Angeles. Los Angeles has already stated they expect Beckham to make the lion's share of his 250 million dollar contract off the field which is what I guessed early on as it's a gamble on the Los Angeles team's part. Of course a high profile player like Beckham can't do the MLS or American soccer any harm. True Beckham will increase ticket sales across the board in the league, at least for the first year anyways. I'm not sure how many of you live in Los Angeles area as I do but those of you that do will understand that out here stars of any kind in any field regardless what they do are like a flash in the pan, meaning here today, gone tomorrow. If any of you remember the old NASL they you will remember that league had many star players & I remember the Rose Bowl have 60 thousand on a average for a turnout for a game & I know that was pretty much across the board of New York, Chicago, Portland, Seattle as well & that league was much stronger than the MLS is & look where it is now. Yes it's important to get players' like Beckham into the MLS but they can never end up being the majority. The MLS needs to not make the same mistakes as the NASL. Home grown players will make or break American soccer, not imported ones.

Just a quick question for Giova ...
Giova, what do you think about all this hype & business of Beckham going to Los Angeles? To be quite honest long term I don't think it will make a great impact. I mean he's a fairly good player but not what I would say a great player. I think they hired him for his image & I think that's one of the reason's he left madrid was because to stay there riding the bench he knew would dammage his image. I'm not bashing Beckham but at the same time I never felt he was a great player. I know there are chances are top level players all over Europe right now scratching their heads trying to figure out what is so special about him. Just curious as to what you think.

hes only doing it for the money........$250,000,000 dollars thats more than what the mls is worth

It seems like LA wants Beckham for marketing. More tickets will be sold as a result of a superstar on this team. Beckham's move is interesting because he has decided to go to a legue that is not as strong as the LFP. It will be interesting to see him play against the the American soccer teams and maybe his move will help America recognize soccer more as in Europe and the rest of the world.

According to Tom Cruise, Beckham made the right choice. According to me, it was the wrong one. Personally, I feel that bringing your country a Euro championship or a world cup is worth more than anydollar amount. I feel that with a change of scenery in Europe and some solid play, McLaren would have no choice but to give the celebrity another chance on the national team. Look, Filippo Inzaghi came back after a2 year lay-off and made the national team and won the world cup, even if he did play only 30 minutes. He's a world champion. This new contract isn't a new beginning for David it's a confirmation of the end. He'll never play for England again.

I tend to agree with you. I don't think he will play for England again either. I also don't think playing in the MLS will be a bed of roses for Beckham either. When you think that the top players in the MLS are making at the most a quarter of a million dollars a year if that & then Beckham will be chances are pulling that amount in every week you have to figure it's going to rub some people the wrong way. So I don't think any players' in the MLS are waiting to greet Beckham with open arms.

Did I say that? Who's David Beckham? Is he a bigger star than me? Am I taller than he is? Oh! Ok! He's the guy who I'm going to play in the movie about his life. The studio even has a title for the epic " Victory Revisited!" Ok, I have to go with Nicole ,,,,did I say that? I meant Katie to our prayer meeting at the local cult I belong to.

You know I read that crazy story about the David Beckham/ Tom Cruise connection. Only in Los Angeles! It's a train wreck waiting to happen. Next thing you know they will put out some weekly show on tv in the spirit of Baywatch but since it will be Beckham & Cruise as the stars it will be called something shallow like ... As the ball spins! Beckham will of course play himself & Cruise, well, Cruise will play the part of the team's spiritual guru center forward. Wonder if they make platform soccer boots yet as old Tommy will need a good pair so he will look as tall as the rest of the extras'/players for the game scenes. Who knows, stranger things have happened.

Why spend 250 million on a has been when you can purchase players with flare from south america and africa. you can make a starting eleven with 250million from south america and africa that would beat an okay galaxy with a player who can kick a football! (p.s. remember Roberto Carlos GOLA against France a while back from almost half field i'd like to see beckham even think of doing that)

Beckham is an expirienced player and will make a big impact on soccer in the U.S.

Though I wasn't at all surprised to see him leave Real, nor to see him sign with LA, I have to admit that I was floored by the contract initially.
After the shock value wore off however, I tend to agree that it works out well for all involved. We knew he was pretty well done at Real, so fine by them. His contract may be enormous, but the bulk of it will be coming from image rights and endorsements, so the LA owners may still be on the hook for a sizable salary, but the really big numbers are going to come from a mutual incentive to build publicity for the team and league through Beckham's image.
A repeat of the NASL history with all the glamour signings of the Cosmos and the downfall that resulted is certainly a concern. In that area, I hope this doesn't push the other clubs in MLS to use their designated player spots in a similar fashion, signing a glut of high-priced older players that they can't really afford. LA is in a unique position signing Beckham, because they can afford to offer such a big package since it is largely based on image and marketing value that they can recoup. For that reason, I think this was a good move for LA and for MLS, and won't itself cause a repeat of the problems with the NASL. However, if it sparks a trend, and other MLS clubs are compelled to follow suit and sign other aging big name, big money players that don't have Beckham's unique marketing upside, that would be worrisome. I'd prefer to see some designated player spots used to sign some younger players that are known entities, but do not command bank-breaking contracts. Players that will raise the level of play, have enough name recognition to boost sales, and hopefully will bring MLS some decent transfer fees when they move on.
As a player, Beckham may not come in and dominate, but he'll easily be one of the top players in the league and will add a lot of dead ball goals. His biggest obstacle, as with most players in their 30s, will be avoiding injury. MLS is not a top league at this point, but it is a physical one. If he stays injury free, I think LA will get a lot of use out of him.

You guys make strong points. A lot of you are saying that this is simply a marketing ploy by MLS & Beckham. Well, I say so what? Real Madrid signing Becks from Man United wasn't? The league needs money in order to prosper. It's a simple fact whether we like it or not. It needs a massive increase in ticket sales and it needs major television exposure. Beckham will help with both of those. Of course, he can't do it alone. As I mentioned before, they need to go after a couple more recognizable players such as Ronaldo or Figo. Rasputin, you said MLS should focus on home grown players. First, if they do then the league will continue just as it has. 2nd, playing in MLS doesn't help these players improve and it doesn't help prepare them for Major competition (see World Cup 2006). 3rd, the really good ones don't want to play here. They want to test their skills in Europe (see Clint Dempsey, Unyewu, Beasley).

if he's getting paid so much money then he's got to show it on the field, because if not presonally i will be the first to boo!
