Del Piero: United Wanted Me

(Goal.com) - Juventus forward Alessandro Del Piero has revealed that Manchester United were interested in signing him last summer.

The Italian international is enjoying a fine season with the Bianconeri in Serie B, but could instead have been plying his trade in the Premiership.

"It's all true. I could have been a Red Devil," Del Piero said in The Sun.

"Manchester United representatives contacted me in August.

"At first I was flattered, but I never really thought of leaving Juventus.

"I've been playing 13 years in this club and I want to finish my career here. I'm sure Alex Ferguson understood my decision."

Del Piero is Juve’s all-time record goalscorer, and earlier in the season made his 500th appearance for the club.

Juve currently top Serie B and if their good form continues they will be back up in the top flight just a few months after being relegated for their part in the corruption scandal.

To do what?

Besides Cannavaro & my all time favorite Italian player Dino Zoff! I really love the way Del Piero plays. He like Cannavaro is tough as nails & yet also like Cannavaro has great skills. It would have been great if he went to Manchester United as he would have fit right in as he could handle the rough & tumble style of the English game. Hey Giova! You see I do know my Italian soccer! When I was a small kid I was able to meet Zoff through contacts my dad had in Football. I think besides Gordon Banks Zoff was hands down one of the best keepers ever.

Zoff was great, but I think there is an Italian goalkeeper that is a little better than him--Buffon. I also like DelPiero but I'm not convinced he can thrive in the English league.Italian players many times have problems getting accustomed to foreign styles of play and other social aspects of every day life. The only player that I can recall that really thrived in England is Zola. I know there is more such as Dicanio but Zola is the one I think really left a mark on the English league and its fans. It would be sad to see Delpiero move to England but if he does I wish him the best of luck. He's a class act. Even after Capello relegated the Juve captain to the bench, he never complained. When Juve was relegated to serie B, he never complained. He is truly one of my favourite Italian players.

By the way I am envious of your meeting with Zoff. You actually met the Italian General.

Del Piero would be gold for any team; but he like me is JUVE FOR LIFE. He's an example for all athletes to follow a team player, with character, loyalty and integrity.

it would be cool, because i love man utd.

Giova, you know in England Paolo Di Canio was & still is popular as far as football goes. He played well there & had good skills but also he seemed to bond with the fans' personality wise but you are right lot's of players' from other countries have a very difficult time adjusting to the English game as it's played at such a mad pace. Sheva is a perfect example.

Rasputin and Giova I always like your comments that touches football!
I consider Del Piero as a symbol of all football players have supposed to be. Then Giova you have touched my heart when you reminded me about Zola. I still remember the way he used to trouble Manchester players when Chealse was playing with the Red Devils.

But I think by this moment it would be wise for Del Piero to join Red Devils for his good future.
