No Onyewu Deal Yet – Standard

(Soccer365.com) - Standard Liège executive Dominique D'Onofrio has admitted that Olympique Marseille and Porto have joined the race for US defender Oguchi Onyewu, but says none of the suitors have reached an agreement.

Chelsea, Fulham, Lazio and Lyon are also pondering a move for the American Abroad, with the Cottagers having already had at least one offer beat back.

"Just like so many clubs, it is true that the two are showing interest, but there is nothing concrete yet."

Onyewu, who starred for the U.S. at World Cup 2006, is currently slated to travel with the team to Charleroi this weekend.

Chelsea? I don't know if that's the best move for Onyewu. It'd be an impressive move to a true world power, but Chelsea is probably planning to stick him in the lineup only while they have injury problems. I don't know how much he'd play in the long-run. That being said, Onyewu can't keep rejecting offers forever. I wish him the best and hope he makes a good choice to move to a good team that needs him to make a difference on the field long-term. He's about to make some real money too...

I agree. He would have the opportunity of playing half a season of top football at a premier club, but he'll find it hard to crack the lineup after the return of John Terry. I would hate to see him make a high profile move then languish on the bench, and Chelsea simply need him for a stop gap measure.

I would much rather see him go to Fulham or Boro or the like... A club that really plans to make long term use of him so he can develop, rather than fill a temporary role for a club that is noted for shelving players. I don't want to see him become another Sean Wright-Phillips.

I wish the Fulham offer could be worked out.

what ar you guys talking about
did you watch the world cup games he played
he did very well with all the game with top class forwards. italy and others.
i think he would do well at any top club milan real barce , i watch soccer 24 hours a day . rai fox both english espanyol
goltv setana sport tve sky every one so i konw no base ball or basketball for me period.

What are we talking about? Do you really think Onyewu is going to take John Terry's place in the starting 11 at Chelsea?

I'm not knocking Onyewu in any respect. He's a quality player and his size and strength make him well suited for any league. The problem is, it's not only a question of whether he can defend against top strikers. No one necessarily doubts that he can. It's a matter of keeping a spot in the first team, and I can tell you right now that Chelsea has no plans to build their defense around Onyewu. They only want someone to fill in while John Terry is injured, and as soon as he is fit, Onyewu will not see much league action. With John Terry and Ricardo Carvalho being there, Onyewu will be seen as second choice center back regardless of how well he plays while Terry is injured. Just look at the way Chelsea handles their players if you have any doubt about that.

The same would be true at Real, and on top of that, Real is not the best place to be right now considering they've gone through something on the order of five coaches in six years. If you know anything about the management of clubs, that's a terrible situation for players. When the coach that signed a player leaves, he will often find himself left out of the new coach's plans. It happens all the time.

Gooch simply is not going to come in and immediately oust the top center backs in the world at the richest clubs in the world. He may be able to work his way into a consistent role with one of these clubs over a couple of years, but that's not what he needs right now. He needs to make the switch to a top tier league, but at a club that will want to build the defense around him, so he immediately gets consistent starts against top quality opposition, rather than struggling for playing time.

He'll be a fixture in top flight football if he goes to a club like Fulham. Some of the other clubs interested in him are not bad options, but Chelsea and Real just would not be smart moves at this point.

Yeah, a move to fulham would be best for Onyewu. He would get a lot more playing time than he would at Chelsea. Plus, Fulham has some familiar faces. McBride, Bocanegra, and most recently Clint Dempsey. The sight of a few Americans could make the deal appealing to Gooch.

Looks like he is now set to go to Newcastle on loan for the remainder of the season with the option for a permanent contract if he performs well.

That's not at all a bad option for Gooch. With Newcastle's injury troubles, he should get immediate playing time. With half a season left to impress Newcastle and earn a contact, it should also give him a great forum to showcase himself in case they end up not offering him terms at the end of the season.

As much as I'd love to see Gouch in the Prem, the Toon is the absolete last club I want him to go to and that includes Chelski, the scoucers and the gooners. Newcastle must be a cursed club withall the injuries there. He'll likely do his ACL in the first month.

That's the best ansewr of all time! JMHO
