Real On Top Defender Safari
(Soccer365.com) -
While conforming the club’s interest in Olympique Marseille winger Franck Ribéry, Real Madrid president Ramon Calderon revealed that the primary target would be a central defender of some repute.
The Galacticos have been linked to the likes of Palermo’s Andrea Barzagli and Standard Liège monster Oguchi Onyewu, but the chief dropped a couple more big names to reporters.
“I’ve heard Pedja (Mijatovic), general manager) talk well of the Frenchman, but now he’s thinking more of other players like Alex (of PSV Eindhoven), (AS Roma star Christian) Chivu.”
“Mijatovic and (coach Fabio) Capello are looking at both the present and the future with an eye to creating the ideal squad.”

I think that real should look into a player like C.Ronaldo than Ribery or Ashley Cole than Chivu

Depending on the fee, I would take Ribery over a lot of more vaunted players on the wing. He's skilled and has the pace to beat players one on one, but the difference is his work rate. I've seldom seen a player that can run full tilt with that kind of pace for 90 minutes like Ribery. The man is a machine and never gives up on a run or tackle. He may not be quite as flashy as a Ronaldo or Robben, but he's every bit as effective.
As for Onyewu, I do want to see him make a move to a better European league and club, but I'd rather not see it be Real. I think he's better suited for a mid-table premiership club, rather than fighting to stay in the line up at Real. Not to mention, his physical playing style is very well suited for the English game.

I could see Real make a serious bid for Arjen Robben in the summer. Robben doesn't seem happy at Chelsea and he struggling to hold down a regular spot in the starting eleven. He would add pace and is a player who isn't passed his prime. Madrid are in serious need of players that fit both those characteristics.
