Calcio In Limbo Over Weekend Action
(Goal.com) - The situation involving the suspension of the Italian league matches is in a moment of stalemate, as the football federation’s chief has yet to give the go-ahead for games to resume this weekend.
AC Milan vice-president Adriano Galliani had told reporters yesterday that games were to resume at the weekend, but without the go-ahead from the Italian football federation’s chief - Luca Pancalli - things cannot move forward.
Pancalli is expected to give the proverbial green signal no later than tomorrow, unless a surprise decision - that few expect will be taken - is around the corner.
What really remains to be seen is what measures were decided upon in order for the federation to allow things to resume after the violent incidents surrounding last week's Sicilian derby clash between Palermo and Catania, that led to the death of police officer Filippo Raciti.
Most of the issues involve the football stadiums, many of which aren’t in compliance with the security standards requested by the Italian government over a year ago through the now famous ‘Pisanu Act’.
For those that don’t fulfill the standards, the home-teams are set to be forced to play behind closed-doors, meaning with no fans present, a solution that obviously is not making the club chairmen happy.
What makes the impending decision even more impressive, is that only six Serie A stadiums are up to the standards, while the other thirteen, including Milan's San Siro, are not.
This could mean that until these other stadiums are not in order (Goal.com will presently post an piece dedicated to the stadiums), a majority of the Serie A matches will be played behind closed doors.
The other shock measure is said to be a ban on away fans from attending games.
