Eto'o Set For Liverpool Return

(Goal.com) - Samuel Eto'o is set to return to the FC Barcelona squad for the Champions League visit of Liverpool, but will not be named in the starting line-up.

The Cameroonian striker opted to not play at the weekend against Valencia in order to continue his recuperation programme after four months out with a knee injury.

After undergoing surgery on a damaged meniscus in September, Eto'o was desperate to make his comeback and was used as a substitute two weeks ago in the draw at Osasuna.

The following game against Racing Santander saw him also start on the bench, but he then refused to go on in the final minutes.

A storm blew up at Camp Nou before it was accepted that Eto'o was not keen on playing because he had not warmed up enough and did not want to risk a setting himself back.

Over the past weekend, the 26-year-old underwent an intense training course under the watchful eyes of Barça coaches, Francesc Cos and Juanjo Brau.

The sessions, which he did alone on the pitch on front of La Masia in the Camp Nou complex, were designed to give Eto'o complete confidence that his knee was back to normal.

Having put himself through the mini-programme, the player has been recalled to the squad for the game against Liverpool to boost his confidence.

It also thought that the Reds may fear his entrance should he begin to warm-up during the encounter because of the extra edge he would give the Blaugrana.

Eto'o may not start a game for Barça until they face Sevilla in 12 days time, rather than risk making an early return in the match against Athletic Bilbao this weekend.

With all the uproar this kid has caused for Barca these past few weeks I hope for his sake he has a good game because if he has a bad game he's going to look a bit foolish. Part of being a professional footballer is having the correct mental attitude on & off the pitch. In the past he's played well for Barca & that deserves respect. However like any professional footballer he must remember all players have their highs & lows. He's come off of a long term injury & has to prove himself all over again. Barca had to fill in the gaps while he's been gone & since the club is loaded with top talent Eto can't expect to just come dancing in as a starter. I sure hope Barca do not end up like Madrid where they have players going over the manager's head to get their way. A manager is the captain of the ship. If this Beckham trend continues the great clubs of lore will become average clubs as managers & players alike will come & go like a round of musical chairs. A great club is a squad that works together. It's not a squad of selfish players that have their own self interest at hand.
