Márquez ‘Satisfied’ With Effort

(Soccer365.com) - Despite another galling loss to the U.S. National Team, Mexico captain Rafa Márquez says the squad have no reason to be ashamed.

The Americans booked a 2-0 decision thanks to second half goals from Jimmy Conrad and Landon Donovan.

“I think the way the team functioned, the way it looked on the field, left us satisfied,” said the Barcelona star. “If you consider that the team has only two days working together, the team showed a lot of character and order.”

“All the same, it hurts because of the rivalry between the two teams and the importance of the match,” added Marquez. “However, we have to take the positive from the match.”

They do not feel ashamed? Why not? They were beat by one of the weakest national teams in the world. Rafa & co should hang up their boots in shame.

I would have to say thts a little harsh to call USA one of the weakest in the world but yes they are weak. but im not sure they hang up their boots in shame i mean yeah they got beat in a friendly game so wat their time will come. Mexico just needs to have a winning attitude a little bit more.

What a lie!!! Mexico considers themselves a legitimate World Cup contender how can you lose to a team that is not yet a World Cup contender and be thoroughly beaten and be satisified. Mexico wanted to beat the US in the worst way they just didn't; admit it.

Hey Freak there is nothing harsh in what I said about the US being (one of the weakest teams in the world) as it's only the truth. It just so happens that at the moment Mexico is weaker but still both teams are at the bottom of the barrel. You Americans have to understand that your not the best at everything & you need to keep your own Red White & Blue ego in check because besides beating Mexico last night which means nothing you have a third world team as far as the international stage is concerned so deal with it! Face reality for once.

HE should feel ashamed FOR WHAT THEY DID. THEY COME TO US SOIL AND TRY TO THROW BOTTLES AND TRIP US PLAYERS AS THEY SCORE. NO CLASS!I MEAN ATLEAST SHAKE THEIR HANDS. MEXICO WILL NEVER E V E R WIN A WORLD CUP FOR AS LONG AS I LIVE

As long as you love neither will the US. Come to think of it neither Mexico or the US will win a world cup in your Grandchildrens lifetime either.

we may never win a W.C. title but we will at least make it to the final in 15 years!

forza usa!

FutbolFreak is right, that is a complete exaggeration. Neither Mexico nor the US are even close to being among the weakest teams in the WORLD. Nowhere near it actually by any measure.

It wouldn't be harsh at all to say that the US is among the weakest teams that qualify for the World Cup finals. That would be true by most accounts. However, over 200 national teams around the world enter qualifying and only 32 qualify for the finals. So any team that qualifies for the finals is nowhere near the bottom in the WORLD.

Granted, it's a little skewed, because some regions like Europe are so much stronger. But if you are going to talk about the world as a whole, that is not even remotely accurate. Let's say what it really is. The US is currently one of the weakest teams that consistently qualifies for the World Cup finals. No one can really argue with that, because we have finished at or near the bottom in two of the last four World Cups.

Stop & think about what your saying. The comment that has you all worked up was that the US is one of,(one of) the weakest teams in the world. This is fact, not fiction. The comment made that they qualify out of the weakest, (the weakest) region in the world, is true too. The US ranking before the world cup was way off as well. You Americans' seem to want to deny the truth when it's not something you agree with. Facts are US & Mexico are two of the weakest teams in the world & chances are always will be.

First of all, I'm not all worked up at all. You are just simply making obvious exaggerations. Sure it's for the purpose of making a point, that's fine. But the absolute fact of the matter is that the US is at the bottom of the teams that qualify, not at the bottom of all teams in the world. As for the 200 or so national teams that enter qualifying, tons of them (small African nations, several Asian/Middle Eastern countries, Central American, Caribean countries, etc.) are simply worse. For good reason of course, funding, population, etc. but regardless of the reasons for it, they are still not as good as a simple matter of fact. If you are going to talk about the world as a whole, you have to talk about everyone, and there are scores of nations out there that are simply well below both the US and Mexico in their developmen at the international level. That is the fact.

I'm under no illusions whatsoever that the US, or Mexico for that matter, is anywhere near on par with even the top half of Europe or South America. I made no comment about FIFA rankings, because I agree that they are nowhere near accurate and the US ranking has been quite inflated as a byproduct of the ranking formula for a long time.

I'm not saying they are anywhere near the top, probably more accurately somewhere in the middle or so of those 200+ nations (which puts all of Europe, the majority of South America and a few of the top teams from each of the other regions above them), and that's not exactly a compliment on my part considering all the really bad national teams that are part of that group.

You wish they were near the middle. They just plain stink in every way. So they beat who? Mexico? Who are they? They are like the US. A nobody. Just another group of outcast in world soccer. A sad joke of a team.

What I think is sad, Bobby, are the people who post here that are only fans of the world's top five teams. You people only like them because they win.

When you say what you have to understand is I, & people like me enjoy teams that can actually play good soccer which the US & Mexico cannot. I'm a fan of top level soccer & theres nothing wrong with that. So say I have to choose between watching a US/Mexico game & a Germany/Italy game it's not even a choice! It's a no brainer. At least I know seeing Germany & Italy battle it out I'm going to see world class players play a world class game & thats all there is to it. You cant force American culture or in this case poor American soccer down everybodys throats. There is other countries in the world besides the US you know!

Thank u health young. The US is probably the weakest to team to make it the the WC but they made it there so they have to b better then at least some teams. And mexico made it to the second round and got beat by a brilliant shot by Argentina's Riquelme. Both of these teams obviously need alot of work but they are improving and will continue to improve.

Hey Bobby, who's to say I don't like watching good soccer? Just because I like the US national team doesn't mean I watch MLS all day long. I'm just pulling for my country, and your entitled to do whatever you want. But sure, if I had to choose between tickets to a US Mexioco game and say, a Brazil Argentina game, I'm going to go see the South Americans go at it. I know that there are other countries in the world besides the US, and I also know that on the World scale, Mexico vs. USA is not the Main event. Saying that, congratulations Italy, France, and Germany, for being the top three, you played great. Now, I'm going to start showing a little patriotism for my country, and start hoping that 2010 is a better year. No one forced anyone to watch anything, and no one is cramming American soccer down everyone else's throats.

To Grady,

Mexico won the world cup for the under-17 two years ago. The fact is that Mexico came in with the same bad players that work for Mexico's top broadcasting channel Televisa. They always bring in the worst players. Really Cuahtemoc Blanco is like 34, Borguetti is like 33. They have to go. There are young good players in Mexico that they refuse to bring along. At least Guardado, a young player, got a chance and if you can recall he played the best out of all the players. To top it off, the defense players, 4 of them arrived from europe on Tuesday and only practiced that day. Both teams need serious improvements if they are to do well in future events.

Adam you say in other post that the US is not weak at the international level but weak at the world cup level. Whats the difference? Guess what! The world cup ..IS THE INTERNATIONAL LEVEL! You jabber in circles. It's like the pot calling the kettle black with your comments. You make no sense but I do agree with you. At the world cup level the US is a weak squad which makes them ..WEAK AT THE INTERNATIONAL LEVEL!

Not the total international level. Do you know how many teams are in the international level? The World Cup is the best of the international level, so the US is not weak. They're just not strong.

Oh, ok now it's the total international level. Oh my! Like theres some kind of difference! I call you on one comment you make & then you twist out of the corner you have just painted yourself into. Nice try! Your not fooling anyone! Look! There is only one international level for senior mens' international soocer. Though the US & Mexico might not be the weakest they are part of a group of national teams that are considered some of the weakest which makes the US one of the weakest just like Mexico. Now try to twist your words around once again. Your move!

The US is not weak, Their just not strong? What the h*ll does that mean? Adam, you should stop, take a deep breath, & think before you post. Your comments make no sense at all. Bobby is right. He catches your no sesnse comments & so do I. The US is one of the weakest teams in the world. They cannot even be considered average at the international level. They do goo playing teams in their own region but thats about it. It's a weak region to begin with. It cant even be compared with the teams from Europe or South America.

The USA is not greedy, they're just not generous. The USA doesn't like war, they just like fighting. The USA isn't good in the world cup, they're just good internationally. Adam, I'm just having some fun. American girls aren't easy they just like to have sex. George Bush isn't an alcoholic, he just likes to drink. Female American astronauts don't kidnap people, they just like to stalk. Anna Nicole Smith isn't dead, she just moved on. Ok, ok, I'll stop.

Giova ...Bravo! I could not have put things any better myself as it's completely 100% true. I have nothing against Americans but what your saying is spot on! Thats why they have so many problems in the world. They are always right, & never wrong. I bet there are a few here that post & read post whos ears are burning right now. Ok time for a ice cold Baltica! Everyone have a good weekend :)

i am an american but my ears are not burning rasputin. yes the US team isnt a good team are they they one of the weakest teams in the world? i would say no. are they weak. of course. but there are weaker teams then the US. ..Mexico

Freak what you left out is there are more stronger teams than Mexico & US then weaker ones.

Grady, what you're forgetting is that there are 200 countries which compete internationally. Mexico is currently ranked 19, US is 28. Even though the rankings aren't always worthwhile, it is obvious that there are many many more countries weaker than US and Mexico.

We realize there's quite a gap between the first tier giants and the rest of the world, and we don't pretend to be on the first tier. But there are over 100 countries that would like to compete at the level of US and Mexico. That's the completely valid point Heath made earlier that you're conveniently ignoring.

Also, not all Americans are the same either. We may support the soccer team, but many of us are repulsed by the president and the mess our country's politics has caused. To group us all in that crap is unfair. That's all I'll say, because I don't want to derail this discussion with politics. I'd rather talk about soccer... or beer.

I'm not ignoring anything. It's you! & some like you here that are ignoring the facts. Either that or you can't read properly. I said the US & Mexico are two of the weakest teams in the world. What I said is 100% correct! As it's true. Neither team does very well in the world cup which is the Everest of soccer cups at the international level. These are the facts! Think what you want! Say what you want! The truth is your US team is a weak school of Guppies in a sea of Sharks!

wow you guys are pathetic
