Twellman Pleased With New Deal

(Soccer365.com) - New England Revolution forward Taylor Twellman is expected to put pen to paper on a new contract on Monday.

The U.S. international had recently been the subject of two transfer offers from Norwegian side Odd Grenland, but MLS adamantly refused each time.

"It was a long process and kind of drawn out, but all I have been asking all along is to be paid what my fair market value would be," Twellman told the Boston Globe.

"Staying with New England was ultimately what my goal was even at the beginning of talks of going to Europe."

"I wasn't asking for Landon Donovan or David Beckham type of money," noted Twellman, the 2005 MLS MVP. "I am being paid for what I have done and what I will do in the future."

So I guess this means this knuckle head will be making about 50 bucks a week then!

Try $1.2 million over 3 years. Not bad for a "knucklehead" like Twellman in a league like the MLS.

Can the kid even count that high!

I think you're right on when you say the MLS is a trove. There's a lot of good things ephapning on and off the field for the league. Attendance is strong and the matchday experience is great in the cities where there are soccer-specific stadia. The potential fan market is growing as a generation of Americans who have played and been exposed to soccer matures is added to a rapidly growing and increasingly geographically-diverse Latino population. Plus a television deal is in place and ratings are going up.The on-field product is getting better and the clubs are seeing the very beginning of their investment in the academies (however they are structured) with the first signings of home-grown players. It'll be very interesting to see how MLS fits into the world of soccer (e.g. destination for Central/South American players, alternative to Europe?) and how the world imposes itself on MLS (e.g. adherence to world calendar, relegation, etc.).
