Abidal Targets Barça And Arsenal

(Goal.com) - Eric Abidal has his eye on a move to FC Barcelona or Arsenal but does not want to go to Italy because of racism, according to his agent.

The French international defender is considering his future and has told his representative, David Venditelli, that he fancies England or Spain as his next destination.

Despite being under contract with Lyon until 2009, Abidal's buy-out clause is only €15m and several clubs are already preparing a summer bid, with Barça having already expressed an interest.

"We have looked for teams in Italy, like Roma," the player's agent told La Gazetta dello Sport. "But Eric does not want to go to Italy because he feels that there is too much racism in the game there.

"He would prefer to move to Spain or England.

"In his future, Barcelona are first choice and then Arsenal. Liverpool are also very keen, but Eric has other ideas."

Venditelli has revealed that the left-back was keen on a move to Serie A, but after being racially abused by Daniele De Rossi he has had second thoughts.

"De Rossi did apologise afterwards, but those insults have made Abidal change his ideas about going to Italy."

Does Abidal live on another planet? Doesn't he hear the news reports about Spanish fans making monkey noises to the dark players? Theres no racism in England? Now I've heard it all. Yes there is racism in Italy, but the situation isn't any better anywhere else in Europe. All I know is that Abidal would be missing out on the food, lifestyle and women of a fantastically happy country.

Did abidal just came out amish country??? wake up buddy! the world is the same all over, unfortunatelly prejudism is part of it,no matter where.and yes Giova i agree with the food and the women.

Abidal, deal with it! Its all around the world like wolfen said. Go to the club tht u want to go to then worry about the other stuff later.

No matter what he decision will be, Spanish league or English league, there WILL be problems with racism. Racism was created by people themselves, all in their ignorant minds.

Look everybody to some degree is a racist, it's just part of life. If this player is not interested in going to Italy to play, again so what. It's his business & people shouldn't take it so personal. If I were in his shoes I wouldn't want to live & play in Italy either & I'm white! If he goes to England & can make a career for himself there then that's a good thing as it's the toughest league in the world to play in at the moment. No room for posers & divers there that's for sure! It seperates the men from the boys!

I agree with RcFutbolFreak.

So jetson u think tht Abidal should have ran away for the racism in italy?

Actually I dont care what the guy does. My point is it's his business & his choice & these knuckle heads here shouldn't make an issue of it. They act like they are his parents or something. Anyways the way Abidal figures things it's better to live with racism in England where the quality of the game is light years ahead of what he would find in Italy & he will make a ton more money in England as well. That's why most pros want to play in England in the first place. It's the richest league in the world right now.

It's ok for him to play wherever he likes but don't publicly denounce a country when it's the same all over the world. You are stupid jetson. As far as I know theres a lot of players who would love to leave England, starting with Ronaldo, Ballack, Sheva etc...The only player who wants to go to England is Owen Hargreaves...stupid.

Drago! Your missing a few brain cells! You mention Sheva, Ballack wanting to leave England. What a joke! It's because they can't hang there! They both are way way over paid & have just choked! Funy thing is you post as Drago & your Italian for sure! I happen to think Italy is not worth living in or playing soocer in so what are you going to do about it? The answer is ...Nothing! England happens to have the best professional league in the world. Everybody & their Grandmother want's to pay there as it pays the most. No other league in the world can compete!

Jetson didn't denounce any country. He just said as a career move Abidal would be better off going to England to play & I agree. He stands to make a lot more money there as well as test his skills at the highest level club wise. Ronaldo will stay with United as he's happy there as for the other two idiots you mentioned they just cannot deal with EPL level soccer & both have played very poor all season. Sheva is by far the worst of the two. He should go back to Italy as it was easier on him there nowhere near as intense as playing in the EPL.

johnny wyatt, i wasn't talking about jetson denouncing a country, I was talking about Abidal...stupid.

Whatever drago/giova, whatever. You just couldn't stay away could you. You live for this stuff!

Painting Italy as the only country where you can experience racism is idiotic. Admit that you have your eye on playing for a team in England. That's a choice and valid you don't need to justify it.

I think Abidal with excell in england. If he wanted to play there he should have just said he wanted too and quit worrying about all the other stuff.

So what! Abidal has the right to say what he want's. If he thinks down on Italy that's is business. I wouldn't want to live & play soccer their either. It's sub-par.

Yeah he's doing the right thing. Going to Italy would be like taking a giant step back with his career as it's no longer a quality league. Going to England is a much better choice as the money is way better for a player & also the soccer is better as well. Abidal just sees what everyone else sees about Italy. It's not a good place to be for any reason.

I'm laughing at all your comments: First of all racism exists everywhere,so that's just a excuse!! Abidal is worried that in Italy the league is hard and defensive,in England is a fast long pass game,in spain just like Italy ,but more relaxed,i like watching all 3 and the Germans as well, to those that say that Italy doesn't measure up to england...please! I'm not Italian and I hate when they play so defensive, but why is it that they won 4 cups and England one?,there's racism, corruption and similar problems everywhere, the beautiful game of soccer is universal and is a way of life, let's keep that way and give credit where it's due.

The defense system in England is the most difficult in the world so I laugh at your foolish comments. Just ask Sheva. No way does Italian league Defense systems measure up to how it's done in the EPL. I know the truth hurt's but get over it.

Dear Scotty everyone has their opinions, which I respect, granted, I don't have to get over anything!,once again you boost England so much, but the fact remains Brazil 5 cups,Italy 4,Germany 3,Argentina 2,Uruguay 2....................England 1.The bundesliga,la liga, serie A & the premier league are all top notch, there's stars in each league,I don't see how the EPL is so superb against the others, wake up!

I'm not English & I'm not too crazy about England as a country either. I wasn't talking about the world cup. I was talking about what league is at the top as far as professional club soccer goes & we all know what the answer is ...England's EPL. Sheva & Ballack didn't go there because it's an easy weak league to play in. They went there because it's the richest league to play in & the biggest test for a player to test his skills against because it's played at a blinding pace. The players that complain about playing there are the ones' that failed there. Let's put it this way. Some of you call it the kick & run game & that shows how ignorant you really are.

Playing in Spain & Italy gives you way more time on the ball & time to think. In England you don't get that which means players have to learn to react & think quicker as it's man to man marking there. The leagues in Spain & Germany have merit & are slowly coming back up. As for Italy. That league is dusted due to all that scandal that went on last summer. The Italians' ruined their own league & lost some of their top players as well in the process. The EPL is at the moment the best run, best quality league in the world hands down. Everything travels in a circle. Twenty years ago the place to play was Italy's serie A & now it's England's EPL. Very much like Empires & cultures as they all rise & fall only to be replaced by another.

Abidal might be young but shows he has a brain. He knows going to Italy would be a major step down as far as being able to play top level soccer. serie A is an empty shell of it's former self. Scotty's right. The Italian's ruined their own league. They had a good thing going but not any longer. Most of their good players' like Cannavaro saw the writing on the wall & left town for better leagues to play in. Abidal playing in the EPL would be a good fit & if he goes to the Gunners' that would be a very good career move for him as that club is full of good young players & they have a great manager as well. Spain would be a good move for him as well but it's not quite at the level of playing in the EPL. serie A is just not a good option any longer it's in the cellar league wise now. The players' that want to stay their are the ones' that can't handle the grade in England, Spain, & Germany.

Yep look what happened to Juve. A year ago they had a great side. It was like a list of the who's who as far as top professional clubs go I mean they had everybody, not one weak player & where is Juve now? who's left from that great squad? Not very many. What happened in serie A last year will haunt Italy for a long time to come. The damm club owners were much too greedy & they really messed up Italian soccer & serie A. What a bunch of crooks. They should do jail time for all the harm they caused. They got off with a slap on the hand & it disrupted a lot of players' careers in the process.

I think Cannavaro would fit it very well in England's EPL. He's a great player & he's very tough so he would have no problems playing in England at all. Considering what's going on in Madrid he might be gone from that club by the end of the season as that club has all kinds of problems right now & I think a lot of big name players' there will be checking out once the season in Spain is over.

You forgot to mention that Italian scumbag so called tough guy enforcer Marco Materazzi. Look what happened to him when he played in England. He's one of those hacker style player's that loves to dish out the fouls on others' & in England it was given back to him in bucket loads! So bad in one game he went to the sidelines sat there & cried like a big baby. Some tough guy! He failed there BIG TIME! Pathetic.

lets face the facts. you have all watched the different leagues, the epl is the fastest the most exciting. best players best refs, best coverage. thats where the money is.the fans demand the best, and they get it.derby games, old, really old rivalry, history that goes way back.the fans are cival, at least at the domestic level. you see kids and women in the front row, 15 ft from the players. no cages or armed guards.every game is fantastic. if the serie A or other leagues want to reach the top flight they have to follow suit. in every regard. stadiums, safety, level of play, coverage, etc etc etc.see how its done boys.look learn and enjoy.

It's spooky how clveer some ppl are. Thanks!
