Argentina takes top spot for first time ever

Zurich, Switzerland (Sports Network) - The FIFA/Coca-Cola rankings for the month of March were released on Wednesday, and for the second time in as many months, there is a new club at the top in Argentina.

The South American club jumped from third to first, based mostly on their 1-0 win over France in a February friendly. It is the first time since the rankings were introduced that Argentina occupies the top spot, but with teams so close in the rankings, that could change as soon as next month.

Outside of Italy and Brazil both moving down one spot each, the rest of the top 10 remained the same. France and Germany still make up the rest of the top five, with England, the Netherlands, Portugal, the Czech Republic and Spain taking the next five spots respectively.

Switzerland dropped three spots to 17th, while the biggest drop in the top 25 goes to Denmark. The Danes fell out of the top 20 as they moved down four places to 22nd.

A number of teams enjoyed nice moves up, but no team could match the jump made by Finland, who went from 33rd to 15th. Scotland also had to be pleased with itself after going up four spots to 16th, while Ghana moved into the top 20 with a three-spot improvement to 19th.

After climbing three places in last month's rankings, the United States took two steps back this month, falling from 28th to 30th. The team did not play a match in that time period so their move down is based on the devaluation of previous results. The Stars and Stripes will get a chance to improve on that ranking this month, with friendlies against Ecuador and Guatemala.

The next FIFA/Coca-Cola rankings will be released on April 18.

Points are accumulated based on the results of a team's matches over the past four years, the importance of each match, the strength of the opponent, the strength of the region and the number of matches per year that each team plays.

FIFA is difficult to figure out. Argentina has a great national side but 1st? Have they been doing that well at the international level. As for England at the club level they are hand's down the best professional league in the world but as a national team no way do they deserved to be ranked so high. Just goes to show why the sport is so messed up as FIFA runs it!

Good news is the alltime losers (united states) are way way down as it's where they should be considering they are a 3rd world soccer nation.

The Fifa ranking is a joke, just to point out: The US & mexico were ranked in the top 10 before the world cup(ahead of other countries they couldn't hold a candle to)??????,then Italy wins the world cup,but Brazil is ranked first???????,now Argentina wins a friendly match with france and they are # 1 ??????the czech rep. didn't even make it out of the 1st round of the WC but they are still in the top 10 ???????? but, what the heck do we know?

FIFA is an odd entity. They always pick the poor countries of the world that have nothing, never won anything & are in general used as global doormats like Brazil, Italy, & now Argentina. None of these countries are super powers so the kind hearted folks at FIFA decided to give the dog a bone, so at least they can say they have won something. If that makes sense?

well argentina, brazil and italy all won world cup many times. i have been to four world cup final and many people fans like me went to watch the south americans mostly and few other country like italy spain france and holland ,germans . so what are you saying.
pele and maradona most skill soccer players
come from poor nation just to name a few.

Yes, what I stated is all those players' you mentioned come from poor countries that are picked on all the time by the Big Dogs' Like America & Russia. That's why when one of those dirt poor uneducated countries win's the world cup it's a big deal for them as they lose at everything else in life. Like I said those poor countries are global doormats. You know how it is.

mexico should be dead last.....or not even ranked at all. not only that they are a bad soccer team they dont respect the rest of the world and they play by cheating or fighting mexico you will always be ranked last in my book.

Can you even spell the word ..Book Anonymous? Like your some God sent town crier for the sport? Of course Mexico cheats but guess what so does everybody else. Look at Italy. How do you think they got through to win the world cup? Granted they played a great game against Germany & scored two beautiful goals in the process. Both goals were text book works of art but then again they play dirty as well. Look at that classic Italian dive they took late in the game against the Aussies which was not a foul at all & they were awarded a penalty for that two bit acting job.

Look at that street brawl Argentina tried to start against Germany after they lost. Is that respect? Look how the stupid no talent Americans' came out against Italy even being as foolish to say to the press prior to the game that their intent was to go out & wage war with the Italians & engage in a fouling war. What's that? Is that good sportsmanship? Can you view the sport in general without being bias & throwing your national pride into the mix & see that all teams' across the board cheat? I'm not German, or American, neither am I Italian or from Argentina & I'm not Mexican but my views are spot on & at least realistic. I just brought to light that there are other national teams besides Mexico that have little or no respect for the teams they play against & cheat. Like I said they all cheat. It's a dark under current of the modern game. It's always been there but it's much worse now.

The entire ranking system that FIFA puts together is a sad joke & means nothing. Before the world cup they had America rated at 5th in the world. Figure that one out? America shouldn't even be in the top 100. As a soccer nation their not even a soccer nation. Their history is losing far more than they ever won. To be expected when they field failures lke Donovan & then they kept Keller far too long. That guy's so old he looked like he was ready for the funeral home 10 years ago! My point is though the ranking system by FIFA is really nothing more than a bad joke pure & simple!

Some rankings are quite bizarre. others are rite though. Argentina is a awesome team and Ghana deserves to be in the top twenty. AS for the USA being fifth well thts just insane! They are a decent team but should be nowhere nere the top twenty.

They shouldn't even be a blip on the soccer radar. The only thing the United States is good at when it comes to soccer is being stupid enough to bring some washed up loser like Beckham over & pay him 250 million to pretty much do nothing.

This entire FIFA ranking system is just like throwing a dog some scraps. I'ts a good will gesture. It gives tiny weak countries that would never have a chance to be a global world power a chance to be king for the day.If you think about it, Brazil, Italy, & Argentina can't win at anything else in life as they are all third world countries so at least they can say ... Hey! We are winners! We are number one!

Granted the Fifa ranking(as I stated prior above)is a joke, but to say that countries like Italy,Brazil and Argentina, are ranked simply because they are not powerhouses politicaly is a bigger joke!!!what doe that after do with soccer!!! all those countries have won the majorities of the world cups, and ANY GIVEN DAY THEY ALL THREE CAN BEAT ANYBODY,ANYTIME,ANYWHERE! AS for the the quote on them being third world countries????since when as Italy being considered that? most all of Europe(Germany,Itaky,Spain,England,France,Switzerland, etc)with the exception of the former iron-curtain countries are are well kept and stable,I don't know about the south americans but as far as football is concerned the countries you guys mentioned rule the field and they proved it! that's a excuse!

F.I.F.A. ranks teams by games they win and their goals and stuff like that ya know. Alright some of the time this is not fair because sometimes better teams may play horrible teams such as how the U.S.A. played Guatemala which helped the U.S.'s ranking. It's kind of like putting a U-6 rec. league team against a U-15 Select Club Team. Then giving the U-15 team 3 points in their own league. I say F.I.F.A. just does these monthly standin' things because Coca-Cola gives 'em a bunch of money. And also so people can think they know where their team stands before games that matter start. I think Argentina deserves to be where they are though because they have excellent players such as Maxie Rodriguez and Riquelme.
Your Footballing Friend,
Keeeper King

I think the U.S. is going to start getting better with their new players and coach. Also I think that the U.S. will never be able to have a prestigous soccer program until they start taking some of the money out of it and put more heart into it.(David Beckham) Also I think it is good the U.S. is getting some fresh faces.

Actually Riquelme is one of my favorite player's but he bowed out of Argentina's national team program months ago. Still I feel Argentina is one of the best national sides in the world. As for the US they will improve, a little. They will win a few games, here & there but they will never be world champions, not in any of our lifetimes anyway. Soccer is just not deeply grained into the American sports culture & it never will be. The NASL attempted to do so & failed & this league the MLS which plays to half empty venues & is nowhere near as popular as the old NASL will fail as well. With, or without Beckham.
