Barca knocked out of Champions League

Liverpool, England (Sports Network) - After falling to Liverpool 2-1 in the home leg of the UEFA Champions League Round of 16, defending champion Barcelona faced long odds to advance.

Tuesday at Anfield, the Spanish giants were bounced from the European Championship even after beating the English Premiership team 1-0. Liverpool advanced 2-2 on aggregate after holding the tiebreaker, which is most away goals.

Even with the return of star striker Samuel Eto'o, Barcelona was unable to generate enough offense to get the two goals necessary to advance.

The former champions could only manage an Eidur Gudjohnsen tally in the 75th minute of the game.

Ronaldinho had Barcelona's best chance other than the Gudjohnsen goal about 10 minutes after the break. He took control of the ball just outside the penalty area, dribbled through three defenders and fired a shot towards an open right side of the net only to see his effort bounce harmlessly off the post from about 12 yards out.

The La Liga team took only seven shots in the game, four of which were on goal, but only one got past goalkeeper Jose Reina.

In the other Champions League matches on Tuesday, Chelsea advanced 3-2 on aggregate with a 2-1 win over Porto, Roma advanced with a 2-0 win over Lyon after the teams battled to a scoreless draw in the first leg and Valencia advanced past Inter Milan on the away goals scored tiebreaker after the teams tied 2-2 in the first leg and 0-0 Tuesday at Valencia.

In the Chelsea/Porto game, Chelsea came back from an early goal by Ricardo Quaresma with second half goals by Arjen Robben and Michael Ballack to advance.

Ballack's tally - his first in nearly half a year - in the 79th minutes proved to be the difference in the series.

In the Roma/Lyon series Francesco Totti and Alessandro Mancini scored first- half goals as Roma earned its first ever trip to the Champions League quarterfinals. The French champions, once again, disappointed their home faithful with an early exit after dominating Champions League Group play.

In the Valencia/Inter Milan series, Valencia held strong under the Italian push in the final minutes of the contest Tuesday. The contest was so heated that there was reportedly an altercation between the two teams in the tunnel following the game.

The Champions League Round of 16 will conclude Wednesday when AC Milan hosts Celtic, Bayern Munich hosts Real Madrid, Arsenal hosts PSV Eindhoven and Manchester United hosts Lille.

The big surprise was AS Roma,Chelsea I expected,I'm glad for Liverpool as well,Inter came down to earth basically as they were given the serie A on a platter, after today most likely Arsenal,Milan,Manchetser look as if they will advance Bayern-real Madrid ????

wolfen, I agree. I thought Lyon would go through, they've been strong in Europe the few years. And of course, I'm very happy that Liverpool held off Barça. They really gave themselves a scare by not scoring on so many good chances, but I'll take it!

As for Real-Bayern... This one is up for grabs for Bayern. They are only 1 goal behind and have 2 away goals. A 1-0 or 2-1 in Munich would advance them. Plus Madrid will be missing Cannavaro, Beckham, and Reyes.

What was that you said dr nyc? What did you say about Barca going to win? NOT! YEAH! LIVERPOOL! Barca have been sent packing! YEAH! THE POOL HAVE WON!

Watch out for Roma

I'm so glad Barca & their over paid babies are out! Now since Chelsea just snuck through to the next round I really want to see them get the boot as well! Well done Liverpool! You showed your a better team than Barca. No excuses for Barca as they were beat fair & square! A win is a win is a win!

Don't write off PSV, they can easily take out Arsenal's toddlers.

Lets not forget that Barca won the game....but lost on aggregate. Liverpool played an amazing game and should have won easily. I see Liverpool going right to the end, the way they've been playing lately. They should have beaten Man U last weekend also if not for a late flukey O'shea goal. I'd like to see Liverpool vs. Roma. That would be fun to watch.

Hi Giova: I agree i'd like to see Roma -liverpool , at this stage I like the underdogs,i really like Roma now, they came out of nowhere with a limited squad, besides one of my favorite players of the past Paolo roberto Falcao(Brazil) played with Roma, and they lost the Cup of Champoins final against Liverpool on penalties, thus it would be a nice revenge.it's along shot but look at porto a couple of years ago?

Wolfen I don't think it's a longshot at all. Liverpool and Roma just took out two heavy favourites to win it all. Look at Liverpool 2 years ago, where as underdogs they won it all. At this point I think it's anybodys to win and anybodys to lose.

Barca & Madrid, you have now been given your walking papers! CYA!!! Oh Capello, start looking for another job you LOSER! This is the best news I've heard all day. These two teams loaded with stars & they are OUT! Three Limey teams still in the running, hard to believe. I hope one of the three takes it all!

I hope Roma or Milan take it. They have the teams to make a significant push.

I hope Milan or Roma get knocked out. I know it's a long shot but I'd rather see Valencia go all the way. I'm tired of seeing the names of the same old clubs get it year after year.

THIS FOR GIOVA , WOLFEN AND YOYO WHY BECAUSE
YOU GUYS SEEM TO KNOW ABOUT SOCCER AS I DO.
THE REST I DO NOT CARE ABOUT. OK WE LOST ON THE AWAY GOAL (FLUKEY)GOALYOU MEAN THE ONE
THE HEADER FROM THE FIRST LEG LIVERPOOL GOT AT BARCE IN SPAIN. NOW POOL WILL NOT PLAY ANYMORE DEFENSIVE GAME NO MESSI WITH FIVE DEFENDERS ON HIM NO DINO WITH FIVE ALSO.
THEY WILL GET HIT BY VALENCIA MILAN OR ROMA.
HOW LONG WILL THEY PLAY LIKE THIS NEGATIVE.

so it just show you how scared teams gets
when they play barce lots of respect
mass defence. anyway should be a good game on
3/10/07 real vs barce.

I'm just glad Barca & Madrid are out. So tired of hearing those names. All those top players that they have & they still were sent home. I do think Valencia has a chance as they play tough. The best part of their game today is when that one Valencia player broke that Italian player's nose in the brawl. That was a text book punch for sure.

This really makes me flippin' angry. I lake flippin' love Barca. They are flippin' sweet. I am so angry I might skip the dance tonight and give kip a ride into town.

Hey, I got the Real-Bayern match right. Real really missed their injured players, particularly Cannavaro... in the first 10 seconds.

Soccer Doc, Liverpool controlled the first half on Tuesday. They had 9 shots to Barça's 1. Not exactly a completely defensive game. Unfortunately, they couldn't convert good opportunities, much like Barça in the first leg. Valdez made some outstanding saves and they also hit posts twice. I was still very worried that Barça would net two quick goals in the second half. We all know that their capable of it. But Liverpool held.

As for the tactic of swarming Messi... what else would you expect a team to do? Of course you have to show them alot respect with your defense. If you allow guys like Messi and Ronaldinho space and time to create, they will kill you. If you mark them with only one man, they will beat him (though Finnan did an excellent job when he was on his own). So you've got to run a lot of guys at Messi, Ronaldinho, or even Deco. If you disrupt them at every turn, you have a chance of frustrating them, or at least limiting the impact of their skill and creativity on the game.

I still have alot of respect for Barca..they should have played better they should have won. its just not their year. It happens

What happened to Barcelona & Real Madrid is made up of a lot of factors. First & most important both teams are stuffed to the gills with world class players & believe it or not that's the major problem. Unlike at Manchester United where the players' never question the manager at Barca & Madrid I think the majority of the players' don't respect the managers'. There is in fighting going on within the ranks & also the clashing of egos'. If you add all these elements up the end product is not going to be good results. It just goes to show. You can have all the world's best players' on your squad but it doesn't mean you will win championships. There's a lesson to be learned from all of this.

As i said before Real looks like the New York yankees, loaded with superstars, estronomical salaries and ?????? As for soccer Dr nyc,I won't take to heart Barca is still one of the elite teams not only in europe but world wide, they won last year, and were eliminated respectfully, some how liverpool seems to get all the breaks, but now it's anyone's cup,the remaining 8 clubs all have a shot,I personally like Roma because they came out of nowhere, but the ball is round and so be it.You are right Liverpool has to be aggressive or they will be eliminated, take care soccer Dr.always a pleasure.

My prediction for the team which will win is Bayern Munich, even though I don't want them to win. My second choice would be Liverpool then Man U and Roma. All in that order. Milan and Valencia would be my darkhorse picks.

When it comes to the Champions League, Rafa Benitez always gets the tactics right. He used to do it with Valencia. Barca can thank Rafa Marquez and his cute heading clearance that lead to the 2nd away goal for Liverpool & the deciding goal. Speaking of Valencia, they are the in-form team in the last eight. They could ride this momentum all the way. As for Roma, Totti's supporting cast is finally doing their share.

now this is what i am talking about just soccer and not those who want barce plane to go down with players love soccer good game on 3/10 /07 barce vs real byern vs bremen
milan vs inter wow lots of good soccer.

As Roma is against Man United for the coming round of champion league! As Roma is finished, I assume!

ok now my team not in anymore the best in the world barce. my friend revelian did you watch all the games that was played on 3/6
3/7 to me roma look very good .
they got very good team in the back middle
and upfront look better than man uted to me.
they scored twice away with ease.
,

dr nyc Barca is not the best club team anymore that have been dusted! They are out! Now they have to play their inbred cousins this week the other lsres Madrid. They are playing the weekend loser match to see who is the biggest loser in Spain.

Hey dr dont count out Man U just yet. They have a very tough back line & every team that plays them has trouble getting past the Man U back line so we will have to wait & see.

jetson if right now asked any mangers of the top 8 including pool who we gave the leg one in spain .who would they not want to see in front them they would tell BARCE.

if liverpool play 4games in a row the way they played barce they would be burned out trust they would bee done

dr nyc man talk about a sore loser. You are like Barca which is to say a loser. Face it your team is past tense this year as far as the Champions League is concerned. Get over it. The 8 remaining teams are better than Barca. Thats just the way it is. Quit your crying. Liverpool is a better team this year than Barca.

dr nyc I see as usual you have posted another stupid post. I'll tell you this much. Barca is the last thing on any of the managers' of the final 8 teams minds right now. They are thinking about the next teams they face. Barca was sent home. They didn't do enough to get through to the final 8. Same goes for Madrid. I'm sure Barca has their own website. Since you love them so much go post there. You can kiss up all you want & I'm sure they would be thankful to have such a childish fan as yourself that has a problem when it comes to spelling.

thank you johnny wyatt , i still love
barcelona

Inter Milan is going to win the whole tourney so who cares.

Who knows who is going to win it. I say it's dead even across the board right now. The fact there are 3 English teams left in the final 8 really makes it interesting. It shows the Premiership is cranking out some quality teams as no other league from any other country in Europe has 3 teams in the final 8. I think one of these 3 English teams will end up in the final.

Liverpool were Lucky to come away with an away victory after Gudjohnsens goal.

WELL IT IS ABOUT TIME THANK KIRO YOU SEE THE SAME THING THAT I SAW WITH POOL.
THANK GOD YOU ARE ON MY SIDE.

No such thing as luck in the Champions League. You either win or lose. Barca just didn't do enough & that's why they are out. Put the blame where it belongs, with Barca. Same goes for Madrid they didn't do enough either. The remaining 8 team are there because they deserve to be there & because they are better than both Barca & Madrid.

I'm going to laugh very hard if one of the three English teams ends up in the final or if it's an all English final. These armchair soccer players here are always slagging the English teams as if they could do any better. None of these clowns, dr nyc, King, Freak, ect .. have ever played professional.

Tristan, I am also really excited to see 3 English teams in the quarter-finals. I especially like it because its obvious the brass at UEFA don't like the English teams and feel they are inferiour. Yet, in the last 2 years, Liverpool won the Champions League and Arsenal made it to the final. I am United fan, so I don't usually like coming to the defense of Liverpool. However, anyone who says they got lucky against Barcelona knows nothing about the game of FOOTBALL. If Barcelona knew how to defend or clear the ball (Marquez) they might win the game. Anyone who saw The Clasico would have seen that Barcelona have issues with the back line. GLORY GLORY MAN UNITED!!

Barca have so many problems it's not even funny. On paper if you look at their team player wise they shouldn't lose one single game but player wise is their problem. They have too many stars & not enough workers. Just like Madrid the players want to call the shots & that's a big mistake. Just goes to show you can have a team loaded with stars but it doesn't mean you will win all the time. Fight on Manchester United!

Responding to the person, or persons' here that keep on making excuses for Barcelona. First of all since your Barca fans' you think without question that just because they are Barca they deserve to win. Well your all ..WRONG! When your team loses you either say they had too many bad calls against them or that the other team was lucky which is an idiotic thing to say & shows your not very bright. Liverpool played better than Barca & did more to get through to the final eight. They out shot Barca in both games & they went to Spain & beat Barca on their own soil so they, not Barca deserve to go through. There was no luck involved. You win some, you lose some. That's life in general & in the Champions League this year, Barca lost some. Accept the truth. Accept reality. Get on with your lives.
