Cherundolo: Fresh Blood Is Good
(Soccer365.com) - U.S. defender Steve Cherundolo is happy to see some internationally green players called into camp by Bob Bradley, including fellow Bundesliga man Benny Feilhaber.
“There are some new faces here,” he told a US Soccer podcast. “It’s always nice to have fresh faces in camp, and hopefully, they’ll be able to add something that was missing.”
Feilhaber, who was recently dropped back to Hamburg’s second team after several veterans became healthy, is one of the new breed of American youngsters looking to start their pro careers in Europe.
Despite his success and that of youngsters like Feilhaber and Sheffield Wednesday’s Frankie Simek, Cherundolo doesn’t find it necessary for every U.S. prospect to develop away from MLS.
He joined Hannover 96 after playing for the University of Portland - a straight-to-Europe path followed by several former Pilots, including U.S. left back Heath Pearce.
“I don’t think its necessary to go to Europe to become a good soccer player,” stated the right back. “It’s an impossible to compare leagues, I think that’s a complete waste of time.”
“Everyone has to figure out what’s best for them.”
