Madrid Failed In Late Cavani Bid

(Goal.com) - Real Madrid made a last ditch bid to sign Edison Cavani from Danubio before the highly-rated striker accepted an offer from Palermo in the winter transfer window, his agent has revealed.

The youngster attracted the attention of the Spanish giants after he hit seven goals in nine games at the 2007 South American Youth Championships in Paraguay to finish as top goalscorer.

While Juventus and AC Milan were also said to be monitoring Cavani, the player's representative Pier Paolo Truzi has lifted the lid on Madrid's late move to take him to the Bernabéu.

With a €5m offer on the table from Palermo, the Spanish giants faxed their bid that was said to be €1m higher than the Italians' but Cavani had already given his word.

Palermo agreed a deal in principle with Danubio and the player on January 29, a day before reciving the off from Madrid.

"I can state that Real Madrid had been sending scouts since last year to Uruguay a year ago to watch Cavani," Truzi told "Corriere dello Sport Stadio.

"Palermo was the club that came forward and made a firm offer to match anything that any other was willing to bid.

"They really wanted to sign Edi and made him feel important."

Cavani made an incredible start to his career in Italy as he netted the equalising goal against Fiorentina only 15 minutes after coming on in the game on March 11.

Clearly the style of play in Serie A suits the 1.84m-tall forward and he believes that he made the right decision to join Palermo.

"They appreciate strength, drive and pressure and it is has a distinct difference to the Spanish game," Cavani said.

"I like to be able to help out in attack and defence and I am able to do that here."

Pick your poison! He could have gone to Madrid & then been caught up in that mess of egos' there but there's not much of a future for him at Palermo either as the Italian league has so many problems. Either way this guy got the wrong end of the stick.

He's ot 2 goals in has last 2 games with Palermo and other teams are starting to see him as a real threat. He's making a name for himself and has a bright future ahead no matter where he ends up. He strikes me as a Barca style player. Barca has some great young players like Messi who is from Argentina which is a stone's throw away from where Cavani is from--Uruguay. Same style of play. They would be a devastating threat together. Also noting that rumours are rampant that Ronaldinho is on his way out and Eto'o is unhappy. If he does go to Spain look for him to sign with Barca not Real.

Those two clubs you mentioned have a lot of problems right now. Too many big name players that are not playing well together. If this kid ends up signing with another club in Europe it should be with a young up & coming club so they can build around him. At the moment Barca & Madrid are lost causes. They are not the right clubs for a young player in the early stages in his career to go to.

Hey Scotty. I can't figure out why u would say that this kid got the wrong end of the stick. Let's see what this kid can do. It is his first time playing for a big time league, big names and different fans. In his first two games he is showing me that he can play with any team. All he needs is a chance to play and improve his game. If it means starting with Palermo, or signing somewhere else, or if he chooses to play and stay with Palermo, so be it. What I'm trying to say is that I don't think he made a bad decision, he just made a jump start to his career to build some experience, and exposure. Good Luck Cavani. I'm cheering for u!!! Viva Celestes

Hey giova/drago/ now Diego Montana. Your so easy to pick out! So easy ........

The only good choice in this situation is at least he wont have to play for that loser Capello. Madrid is opposite of Manchester United. At Madrid, like United they also have many young players' with promise but they along with everybody else there which includes the two bit actor Beckham walk all over Capello & he takes it. It's pretty sad to see the state of things at both Madrid & Barca. Both clubs are no place for young players' at the start of their careers.

The owners of Real Madrid shot themselves in the foot when they hired a low class, low level, small time Italian like Capello to run the show. He's small time & has no business being in charge of a club like Real Madrid. Look at all the top players' he has there & he still can't make it happen. Then to add insult to injury he folds & lets a freak like Beckham get the better of him. Send Capello back to the leagues in Italy thats where a loser like him belongs.

Scotty, I'm not drago or diego, I've got nothing to hide. I say what I want and if you don't like it...stick it. This site has been overcome by ignorance. Guys like Rasputin, Tesoro and yoyo hardly come on here anymore because of Guys like you. You guys are young American punks who think they know about soccer. I'm not calling everybody on this site just Scotty and his buddy's. As for Ronaldo he's gone at the end of the season...you can bet your life on that. Anyways I have another 3 years of celebrating the most celebrated trophy in the history of sport. Don't worry the US still has baseball and the nfl.

giova/drago/diego montana. Let me bring you up to speed on a few things. Ronaldo has alraedy stated he's staying at United so your totally wrong there. He's going to be the highest paid player at the club as well. He's happy at United & United are happy with him. Going to Madrid or Barca where both clubs have weak managers' would not be conductive to a young player like Ronaldo as he would just be lost & caught up in a sea of ego's of players, not the managers', call the shots. Italy would be even a far wose fit for Ronaldo as that league is unstable & it would be a waste of his talent there in that below average league.

James it's so funny that you go through the trouble of writing those 3 names everytime you address me. I appreciate the attention. It goes with the territory of being from the country which is the current world champion. Ronaldo is just giving the English lip service while he's there. Soon he'll give England another wink like he did in the world cup and disappear to Spain. So naive. Madrid has plenty of money to make him the highest paid player in La Liga and runours have it that Jose Mourinho is going to be their next coach. Don't you think Ronaldo will want to play closer to his home for a guy who's from his country. To think anything different would be simple minded and foolish. Ronaldo alredy has one foot out of England.

Anyway Ronaldo is quite happy at United & I'm sure if he wasn't he would have been gone in the January transfer window. He's going to be the highest paid player there & treated with respect, something he would not get at Madrid as he would just be another hired gun & feather in Madrid's cap for lack of a better term. His game & style is well suited for the Premiership where fast reactions & even faster thinking seperates the men from the boys'. You can preach all you want but in the end when all is said & done Ronaldo is staying put with United.

Thank you.

Of course they failed to sign him. He may be young but he's not stupid & he sees what everyone else sees. Madrid has problems. The main problem is the feeble manager they have in Capello. He has no business being in charge of a club like Madrid as he's not a top level manager. The players' walk all over him. There is no structure at that club at the moment. They need to send Capello back where he came from & get a real manager.

Your bloody well right mate! Capello has no business being at the helm of a side like Madrid. He's lost the script & the club I think will lose a fair number of their top players' at season's end. As for this bloke here that want's to come off as if he knows' United's Ronaldo up close & personal your bloody well off base on all your remarks. Ronaldo has stated this week he has much more to do at United before his time with them is up. He's going to get a massive contract package by staying with them & it's a good fit for him as United are a far better club at the moment than Madrid or Barca combined. Ronaldo is a very popular player in the Premiership & he's well respected at the club as well. We have to hand it to Sir Alex as unlike the weak minded & very overated Capello Sir Alex is a strong manager that has all his players' respect. You don't see that kind of respect towards the managers' from the players' at both Madrid & Barca & rightly so as there is nothing there to bloody well respect.

I can't understand what the owners of Madrid were thinking when they hired Capello. It's been a total nightmare at Madrid since he's been there. He has to be one of the worse manager's ever for a top level club in Europe period. Madrid have some serious problems now but to bring on another manager now would add more problems but at the end of the season look for them to give Capello the boot & send him back to Italy where he belongs then maybe they can focus on a restructure of the team but no more big name signings as they already have far too many. They need some worker bees on that team for a change. That's the only way they will be able to compete with the big guns in Europe.

Hey guys: I have no idea why you guys think I'm Giova or Drago. I am not Italian, I'm Spanish from South America. To be exact, from Uruguay. The same country that Cavani comes from. That is why I put my post on this topic. I came on this site a few times and I read some postings. I don't often write much on this site, but when I do you guys think I'm Giova or Drago. I would appreciate if you "GUYS" not think I'm Giova or Drago. This post is about Cavani and not Ronaldo. Viva Celestes.........for those that don't know what that means, Celestes means BLUE, like the Uruguayian Jersey. Thank You and Bye for now!

If Capello had one single ounce of self respect he would step down & walk away.

Capello only did well at smaller, less important clubs. It's unrealistic to think he could handle a soccer giant like Madrid. The blame should go to Madrid's owners as they chose Capello. It's not his fault he's not a top club manager. His only fault was biting off more than he could chew. He's better off going back where he came from where the standards are not so high.

Cavani will stay with Palermo for at least one more year.

Hey, that's the gereastt! So with ll this brain power AWHFY?
