Palermo falters at Messina

Messina, Italy (Sports Network) - Palermo had a chance to add some space between itself and fourth-placed Lazio in the Italian Serie A table when it played at fourth-from-the-bottom Messina Sunday.

Unfortunately for Palermo, Messina got an inspired effort from Christian Rigano, who scored twice to lead the home side to a 2-0 victory.

The win puts Messina out of the relegation zone by one point while Palermo holds just a slim two point lead for third place.

Rigano put Messina up one in the 45th minute and Palermo was forced to play a man down for a large portion of the second half when substitute Andrea Caracciolo was sent off after receiving his second yellow card.

Rigano put the nail in the coffin as he fired home a shot in the 65th minute to give the home squad a little breathing room.

The loss marks eight games since Palermo earned a victory, putting its Champions League spot in jeopardy as the season winds down.

In the rest of the Serie A action on Sunday, Fiorentina continued its drive for European play with a dominating 5-1 win over Torino. Luca Toni and Alessandro Gamberini each had two goals in the win. Catania Calcio and Siena battled to a 1-1 draw and Parma and Reggina shared the points after ending their contest deadlocked at two. Cagliari, Lazio and Empoli earned clean sheet wins over Atalanta, Sampdoria and Udinese.
