United return home with much to do against Roma

(Sports Network) - The last week has not been kind to Manchester United, as the Red Devils dropped their first-leg Champions League quarterfinal game with Roma 2-1 on Wednesday, and followed that up with a 2-1 loss at Portsmouth on Saturday in league play to reduce their lead in the Premiership to just three points.

United now turns its attention back to European play, and Sir Alex Ferguson's team will have plenty to do at Old Trafford on Tuesday if they are to continue their quest for the treble.

On paper the draw seemed to be a good one for United, who avoided Premiership clubs Chelsea and Liverpool, and also would not match them up with traditional European powers Bayern Munich or AC Milan. Roma had not advanced to the quarterfinals of this tournament since it changed names from the European Cup to the Champions League, but the Italian outfit played like they were seasoned veterans of the competition.

They attacked United from the opening whistle, and after Paul Scholes was sent off in the 34th minute for picking up his second booking, Roma took advantage and grabbed the lead before halftime thanks to a goal from Rodrigo Taddei. The one positive that United can take from the game is that Wayne Rooney broke his 17-match goalless streak in Champions League play and temporarily leveled the contest in the second half. Mirko Vucinic wiped out Rooney's tally just six minutes later, and Roma was always going to be the side that came out on top.

Despite the win, Roma have to be somewhat disappointed that they conceded a precious away goal, and that they only bring a one-goal edge into Tuesday's contest. The Italians created many more scoring chances and should have added a few more goals to make the second leg less suspenseful.

United should feel pretty good about its chances despite the deficit, as a 1-0 win in the second leg would be enough to put them through to the semifinals based on away goals. They will not have the services of Scholes, who will miss the game due to suspension, but should have a healthy Louis Saha back in the fold.

The two-match losing skid that the Manchester club is on should not continue. United is returning to the comfort of Old Trafford, and they will no doubt come out playing with more urgency then they showed in Rome last week.

Roma is a very aggressive team that is highly skilled and capable of beating United on its home soil. However, it will be interesting to see how they approach the game, whether they continue to attack as they did in the first leg, or try to defend the one-goal lead that they have. Either way, you can be sure that they are kicking themselves for not finishing off the Red Devils last week when they had the chance.

Tuesday's other contest features Chelsea traveling to Valencia with the two teams on level terms. Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho is looking to guide the Blues to the semifinals for the second time in three years, but Chelsea will have its hands full against a Valencia team that played them to a 1-1 draw at Stamford Bridge in the first leg.

David Silva gave the Spanish side the lead after 30 minutes, but Didier Drogba made sure that Chelsea would come away from the game with no less than a draw as he scored in the 53rd minute to level the match for good.

The two teams played a very evenly matched game in the first leg, and the return leg promises to be just as tight. Valencia's away goal could prove to be big, however, as they produced a similar result in their Round of 16 upset of Inter Milan. They were able to come away with a 2-2 draw against Inter in the first leg, and then locked down the Italian club in the second leg at home, producing a 0-0 draw but moving on because of away goals. Valencia is capable of playing another defensive masterpiece, putting the shackles on the Chelsea attack and playing for a goalless draw. It is a risky tactic that could backfire, but it is not out of the question.

Chelsea should be the more aggressive team offensively, but that could also allow the home side to counter-attack and put the visitors even further in a hole. Chelsea is hoping that midfielder Michael Essien can shake off a knee injury and take part in the game, otherwise there could be a big hole in the center of the Chelsea midfield.

On Wednesday, AC Milan and Bayern Munich enter their return leg on even terms, as the two teams played to an entertaining 2-2 draw in the first leg at the San Siro. After Andrea Pirlo put Milan ahead after 40 minutes, a frantic final 12 minutes saw the teams combine for three goals, including two from Bayern's Daniel van Buyten. With Milan holding a 2-1 lead in the game's final moments, Van Buyten knocked his second goal past Dida to give the German side two big away goals, and a slight edge heading into the return leg at Allianz Arena.

Bayern is a team that is certainly capable of scoring goals, but they have often had a problem keeping them out in this competition. Milan is the more interesting team, one that is capable of playing tight defense, but also a team that can score goals when needed. Kaka has proved to be one of the most dangerous offensive players in the Champions League this season, and Milan will once again lean on its Brazilian playmaker for goals.

Bayern has a number of weapons offensively that can hurt you, but they must be careful not to leave themselves too open in the back.

Wednesday's other fixture seems to be nothing more than a formality as Liverpool returns home to Anfield with a 3-0 lead over a struggling PSV side. The Reds dominated the first leg from start to finish in Holland, with Steven Gerrard scoring the opener midway through the first half, and John Arne Riise and Peter Crouch adding second-half strikes.

PSV showed little in the attack area, and was lost in the back without central defender Alex, who is out with an injury, leaving a number of openings for Liverpool to exploit.

Barring a monumental collapse, Liverpool will go on to the semifinals to meet the winner of the Chelsea and Valencia quarterfinal, and looks to be a good bet to reach the finals for the second time in three years.

I expect some miracles to happen during the champions league this week. where PSV and AC Milan will go through as well as AS Roma and Chelsea!Otherwise, the unmentioned teams will go through.

If PSV went through, that would indeed be a miracle. They need 4 goals at Anfield. All the other ties are up for grabs, but Liverpool's is not.

hi revelian you think man utd still going through after that game roma played. come on man roma is a good team lots of talent many
.

well it looks like your wrong doc. man u is beating roma 5-0!!!!

o wait, michael carrick just got a sixth for united!!

what a game. for a united fan at least. i guess the best team did win after all.

All kudos and congratulations to Manchester United and all their supporters. As I was just hoping for Roma to get a tie, I knew it would be difficult, but I didn't expect this. I'm still reeling from the game, I am in disbeleif to what I just witnessed. Manchester played some of the most beautiful football I have ever seen. It didn't matter what Roma did today because the way Manchester United played today, nobody could beat them. Ronaldo was always very good but now I think he has acheived a level that is beyond Ronaldinho's when comes to ball control and sheer speed. This guy can do it all--kick, pass, head, dribble, run, take free kicks..etc... Anyways the victory was fully deserved. I hope Milan gets through tomorrow, because they would play Manchester United in the next round. Hopefully Milan can find a way to avenge Romas humiliation.

Wow. United were awesome today. giova, I think you summed it up perfectly.

I didn't get a chance to watch the game,I'm happy for the ManU fans, but devastated for the Roma fans, whom although should be happy that they went this far.Totti ??? even though he's one of the most talented players around, somehow he doesn't come through when called in decisive games.there's agood saying let your feet do the talking!

Totti has back problems wolfen so that might explain things. I'm just shocked at the result. I figured it would be close with Roma moving on but I was wrong. What I've been saying for sometime now finally paid dirt. Remember I said United have many players' that score for them. Last week those players' were out to lunch against Roma as well as in the EPL loss United had this past weekend but they came back to life tonight. I have ton's of respect for Roma as a team as last week they played great soccer & I really like Totti as a player. I just don't care for him as a person off the field as he says a lot of stupid stuff that doesn't make much sense. I have to give credit to United though. They were in a major hole & climbed out of it & came out with a good result. That's heart & desire right there. Oh wolfen, did you see the Chivas USA game this past weekend? My neighbor the next street over scored for them. Every year he scores lot's of goals in MLS. He's a good player wolfen & hes from Croatia.

Bye Roma! Bye! Bye Totti! Go cry! Maybe Roma could go pick up some cry towels from those other losers' Barcelona.

Hi Scotty,I hope all is well for you, unfortunatelly I didn't see the Chivas game, but I played with a few Croatians in the east,(mostly Albanians ,jugoslavs,Italians,Irish),a few years back I played with a guy that made it to the Metrostars(now Redbulls) Rodrigo Farina, but I haven't heard from him lately, keep up the good work,as I mentioned a guy I played college ball with has a good position with the Galaxy, and good work gets rewarded, take care scotty.

Yeah Man United! I would love to walk up to that brainless idiot Totti & say ,,,,,,How does it feel dummy! All the crap he said! What an idiot! Hey Totti! You were schooled today on the finer points of soccer! I hope you learned from it you loser!

I knew it my friend soccer dr nyc but I did't think Man U could have crashed Roma to that extent! 7 to 1!!! Viva Man U. Go Man U, go to the final.

In my opinion Totti is really really overated. I hate the way he plays futbol. He talks trash...then doesnt back it up. Totti go home and suck ur thumb u big loser!

Ok let's move past the brainless one Totti. He's been given his walking papers from Champions League anyways. Liverpool/Chelsea should be a real interesting game to watch. I hope Liverpool roll on! Ok gang! Shout it out for the kick & run teams! Kick & Run! Tricks & short passes are great to watch, but only the kick & run game seems to get you further in Champions League!

Chelsea 2- Liverpool-1.
