Carra: Beware The Underdog
(Soccer365.com) - Jamie Carragher is not underestimating PSV because he was part of a Liverpool side who became European champions despite being underdogs.
On paper Liverpool seemed to get the easiest draw with their quarter-final clash against the Dutch side, but Carragher knows that they were underdogs at every stage in 2005 as well as being underdogs against Barcelona in the last round.
"We will show PSV the same respect we showed Barcelona," Carragher told the Liverpool Echo. "I know a lot of people have been saying it was a good draw for us but there is no way we'll be complacent going into this.
"How could anyone be complacent against a side that's beaten Arsenal. Before last Saturday, Arsenal had battered us three times this season, so it shows the quality PSV has.
"They're one of those teams that always seems to do well in the Champions League. Every year they seem to be in the later stages.
"Let's not forget Ronald Koeman was Benfica's manager who knocked us out a year ago, so anyone who is thinking we've not got a really difficult tie to get through obviously doesn't know what they're talking about.
"We were the underdogs in every round in 2005 and this competition has shown over the years that reputations count for nothing.
"When we won it and Porto and Monaco were in the final it showed how underdogs raise their game when they're playing favourites.
"Maybe we're seen as favourites this time but that means nothing."
