Cruyff Wants Messi To Mature

(Goal.com) - Johan Cruyff believes that Lionel Messi has to become a team player if he is to be considered a true great and has passed on some of his expert knowledge.

The Dutchman, who is still connected to FC Barcelona, has been impressed by the Argentinian's ability, but wants him to mature more in order to become even better.

As Messi has drawn many plaudits recently, Cruyff spoke out to warn him that he must keep on improving and working hard to help himself and his team-mates.

"For all the natural talent that he has, he still has to learn certain things that he does not yet have. Experience and his development as a person.

"As good as Messi may appear now, he still has to grow as a player and as a human being," he explained. "His aim must be to better than he is.

"To be better does mean scoring another incredible goal, it means helping those around you more."

During Cruyff's time as coach of Barça he oversaw many blossoming careers, but the beginning of one particular player sticks in his memory.

"In a certain sense, Messi reminds me of what happened with Iván De la Peña," he continued.

"Everyone wanted him to make the final pass, the killer pass to create goal, and I was obsessed that he could do that.

"For every ten balls you receive, play nine of them easily and keep one for yourself, maybe two at the most.

"It should never be the other way around or you lose that element of surprise."

What's with these old guys hating on these young guys? Messi's not even 20 yet. Did he not see last week's goal? Anyone who questions his talents after that is just a hater.

I don't think Cryuff hates Messi. Unlike Pele for instance Cryuff was not only a great player more important he was a great team player & turned out to be a great manager. If anything I think he give Messi praise & rightly so but I thinkhis message to Messi is that Messi needs to stay focused on pushing himself to become even better. I have had coache's & managers' much older than me tell me I can do better. I never have took it personal as I figure with their experience they know much more than me. So I don't think Cryuff was questioning Messi's talents. Speaking of talents if you want to see real magic with soccer you wan't to check out the dvds' out about Cryuff in his prime as a player.

cryuff needs to shut up his time up .
his slow moving game would not work right now

Yo dr nyc hate to tell you this but you should think before you post as most of the time between typos you make no sense. Cryuff was one of the best player's Barca ever had & on skill level & vision he was light years ahead of Messi or any other modern day player you could name. Cryuff was also a very good manager as well & unlike Pele he's not some bitter old troll. Makes me laugh as you love Barca so much but knock Cryuff who was one of their best player's ever! Messi's a great player but in no was is he on the same level as Cryuff was.

What do you know about soccer dr nyc, besides watching it ...You know nothing! Your not even a player. You just wish you were!

He spends all his free time watching soccer on tv James so in simple terms he knows very little. Just the comment about Cryuff's so called slow moving game proves he knows very little. This guy's not even a player he just dreams he was. There was nothing slow about Cryuff when he was playing. Not only were his skills so far above the players' that faced him & not only was he moving much faster than anyone else on the field his vision was supernatural. He was thinking a dozen steps ahead of everyone else.

Come on! You don't play! You only wish you did. Your too busy watching games on tv. You put your Barca jersey on. Flick on the tv & jump up & down like some 12 year old kid. That's the extent of your so called soccer skills.

dr nyc, how old are you anyway? I'm curious.

have you ever wonder if i speak much english
where i am from . over and out dave

It's that child like creativity that enabled him to pass 5 players to score that goal. If you start pressuring him to mature all he'll do is close up and you won't see that flash of brilliance that he is able to perform from time to time. Let him be and he'll come into his own. Don't bash him publicly thinking that it will make him a better player. Messi is Messi.

Cryuff was by no means insulting Messi. If anything Cryuff was one of the best player's to ever play for Barcelona & for the record dr nyc there was nothing slow at all about Cryuff's game. His pace, skill, control, & vision was far above any player he came up against. He was a true artist & when his playing day's were over he became a great manager. Barcelona's greatest years were when Cryuff was with them.

I don't know where these Cryuff haters' come from. Either they were not born when Cryuff was playing or they know zero about the sport of soccer but before Cryuff went to play in Barcelona, Barcelona was an average to good team in Europe at best. Once Cryuff started playing for them they sky rocketed to the top becoming the best team in Spain & Europe thanks to Cryuff. Just like he did with Ajax. Ajax & Barcelona were never the smae after he left. They have been good. They have had good, even great players' since then but never the same. I'm not sure who the person is here that stated Cryuff's slow game wouldn't work today but that person needs to go see a Doctor to see if he even has a brain. Cryuff was by no means slow at anything when it came to soccer & Cryuff was by no means coming down on Messi. If anything he was telling Messi to not get caught up in his own hype & to strive to improve more & more. I'm sure Cryuff respects Messi's abilities. Cryuff just sees the same thing a lot of people see with top level players' now & that is most of them become ruined & caught up in the off the field trappings that have nothing to do with the game & forget why they started playing in the first place. I'm pretty sure that was Cryuff's message & nothing more.

cryuff is one of the best players. cryuff is messi private tranier. cryuff is dush and there traning style is amzing. cryuff knows a lot about the beautfull game of futbol
