Donovan: I’m A Feilhaber Fan
(Soccer365.com) - U.S. Men’s National Team ace Landon Donovan says he was greatly impressed by recent debutant Benny Feilhaber during recent friendlies with Ecuador and Guatemala.
The Hamburg prodigy earned his first two caps and displayed some cool moves in the middle of the field.
"He has a German bite in the way he trains hard, so you can see being over there has rubbed off on him," Donovan, a two-time Bayer Leverkusen man, told USSoccerPlayers.com. "He's very good on the ball, and has as much potential at that position as anyone I've seen."
"He's in a spot where he could find himself playing there for a long time for the US."

I agree with Donovan's statement, when I was watching the US vs. Guatemala game I was impressed in the way he played and didn't understand why he was taken out the game.

I've been hoping for Benny to get his chance for some time now, and Michael Bradley as well for that matter. Both hold much more promise than most other center midfield options we've seen lately. Feilhaber looked very solid in the Equador match, comfortable on the ball and provided a lot of quality passing to initiate the attack.
When he was making Champions League appearances for Hamburg last year, it was already apparent that he should be getting looks at the senior nat level. It's unfortunate that he was sent down to HSV II with Hamburg's coaching change, but I don't expect Benny to be playing second team football for long. He's still young with a lot to learn, but with the busy summer schedule of the national team and a few years to develop before 2010, I'd consider Feilhaber a frontrunner for a starting center mid spot over the next couple of years.
