Lyon clinches title as Toulouse falls to Rennes
Rennes, France (Sports Network) - Lyon clinched its sixth-straight Ligue 1 title on Saturday without even stepping on the pitch. That is because second- placed Toulouse was handed a 3-2 loss by Rennes at Stade dele Route de Lorient, eliminating any chance the club had at catching the league-leaders.
Achille Emana gave Toulouse a 1-0 lead at halftime with his goal in the 30th minute, but the home side rallied in the second half to snatch all three points.
Jimmy Briand got the scoring started in the 63rd minute when Toulouse's Walid Cherfa was whistled for handling the ball inside his own box. Briand stepped up and converted the spot kick by placing it in the lower-left corner.
Second-half substitute Sylvain Marveaux put the home side in front in the 75th minute as he bent a brilliant free-kick around the wall and into the top corner of the net, giving Toulouse keeper Nicolas Douchez no chance.
However, an own-goal conceded by Briand leveled the match just two minutes later, and it looked as though the team's would be left with a share of the points.
Bruno Cheyrou made sure that his club secured all three points, however, as he broke the tie for good in the 87th minute. A cross from Romain Danze set up an easy finish for Cheyrou as he got free from his marker and got on the other end of Danze's cross, knocking the ball home from the top of the six-yard box with his right foot.
The loss drops Toulouse into third place in the league standings, and they are now just three points ahead of Marseille for the third and final Champions League spot.
In other Ligue 1 action on Saturday, PSG got two goals from Pauleta en route to a 4-0 drubbing of Nantes, Lens moved into second place with a 2-0 defeat of Le Mans, Nancy handled Valenciennes 1-0 on a penalty kick by Benjamin Gavanon and Marseille earned a 2-1 win over Troyes as Modeste M'Bami scored in the 86th minute. Monaco downed Lille 3-1, and both Sedan and Nice and Sochaux and Lorient ended in 1-1 draws.
On Sunday, Lyon takes its victory lap with a visit to Auxerre and Bordeaux tries to move into the top three with a win at St Etienne.
