Road Reds dismantle PSV, 3-0
Eindhoven, Holland (Sports Network) - Steven Gerrard became Liverpool's top goalscorer in the European Cup en route to leading the Reds to a critical 3-0 victory over PSV in a Champions League quarterfinal first leg match at Philips Stadion.
John Arne Riise and Peter Crouch also found the back of the net for Liverpool, which won the entire tournament during the 2004-05 season.
PSV now needs its best performance of the year in the second leg to return to the semifinals of this tournament for the second time in three years. Not only did PSV lose the match, but it buried itself by surrendering three goals, since the tie-breaker, if needed in the second leg, will come down to away goals.
"We can't think about that just yet," Gerrard said. "There's still work to be done in this tie and we have to make sure we're professional at Anfield next week and finish the job off. There's still 90 minutes to play. If we do that then we can think about playing Chelsea or Valencia, but not yet."
Gerrard broke a scoreless match in the 27th minute via a header from the penalty spot. Steve Finnan started the play with a cross into the box, where the England midfielder was able to break free and direct the ball into the right side of the net down low.
Gerrard now has 15 goals in Champions League play, moving past Ian Rush on Liverpool's all-time list.
PSV was lucky to go into the intermission down by only one goal considering it looked sluggish the entire first half when it did not produce any shots on goal.
Liverpool doubled its lead to 2-0 in the 49th minute when John Arne Riise took advantage of a PSV turnover. The Norwegian ran to the loose ball and after settling it with his chest, he blasted the ball up high from long range past goalkeeper Heurelho Gomes.
Peter Crouch gave the road team a 3-0 edge in the 63rd minute. The striker split the defenders from 10 yards out and found the back of the net courtesy of a header up high off of a Finnan cross.
"To win 3-0 away anywhere in Europe is a great result and we're all delighted," said Crouch.
PSV was without two of its better defenders. Brazilian Alex was forced to watch with a hamstring injury, while Michael Reiziger is out for the remainder of the campaign with a groin problem.
The second leg will be played at Anfield on April 11. The winner will play either Chelsea or Valencia in the semifinal round.
Reds midfielder Fabio Aurelio's status for the return trip to England is up in the air after leaving this one with what appeared to be a serious injury.
In Tuesday's other contest, AC Milan and Bayern Munich battled to a 2-2 draw. Kaka gave the Italian club a 2-1 edge in the 84th minute courtesy of a penalty kick, but Daniel van Buyten lit the scoreboard in injury time to knot the contest at two.
Kaka is the leading scorer in the Champions League this season with seven goals.
The other two quarterfinal matches kick off on Wednesday as AS Roma welcomes Manchester United to town, and Valencia travels to Chelsea.

Liverpool started off their EPL season a little slow but have been gathering steam ever since. Nothing against PSV but Liverpool for the most part controled the game. Two other players' besides Gerrard scored for them today so I think it's safe to say Liverpool are anything but a one man team. Scoring 3 goals in any game at this level is a good thing. Scoring them away is a very good thing. No luck involved in this game. Liverpool won fair & square!

As for the other game with Bayern & Milan. I thought Milan would have come away with the encounter with little or no problems. Bayern are not the club they once were back when they had the cream of the crop of Europe but they still have good players' & they battle it out & play tough. The return leg of this one should be intense.

POOL! I just have to say that Steven Gerrard is a special player. there are very few like Gerrard today. awesome display by POOL today on the road. No one should want to play the reds right now.
ANd scotty I agree. That 2nd leg will for munich/milan will be a good one. milan let them off the hook with the secong goal.

YEAH LIVERPOOL YEAH !!!!!!
What a game! What a masterful display of soccer skills! In the second game PSV would need to score 4 goals to move on & that's just not going to happen. BYE PSV! BYE!

Impressive display by Liverpool. Bayern get 2 goals at San Siro. Milan are in trouble. If Bayern get a goal at home, Milan is done. They just might be anyway.

Yes Rider that's been the pattern with a lot of teams' this year in Champions League giving away too many goals at home & then trying to play catch up away. Going to Italy is tough enough as it is to play a match for any team when you consider Italian teams always have very tough defenses & it's rare for them to give up very many goals so even if Bayern & Milan tie in the second game I think unless it's 3 to 3 this situation has caused some problems for Milan.

Milan should feel very blessed for two reasons. First, they have Kaka & second they were gifted that penalty. Had they not been given that penalty they would have lost today & that would have shocked me as going into the game I feel player wise they had a very good advantage.

Bloody well right mate! Now if they can leave Gerrard alone in the middle on the national side & sack that oaf Lampard the national team might do a bit better.

What makes me laugh is the English haters' that post here say Liverpool got lucky. Good God! What planet do these people come from? How can a team that for the most part had control of the entire game & scored 3 goals by 3 different players' have been lucky? That's beyond me! It just makes me laugh & then there's one excuse after another. So I guess from what these people say Liverpool is lucky. Never mind they are in the final 8 & took out Barcelona. That doesn't matter to these people, it doesn't count! Like I said just to read this dribble makes for some good laughs. Hey dr nyc, your team was knocked out of the Champions League some time ago. Get over it!

I agree U. Albert Lampard is the new Beckham. They just put him on because of family connections and money.

all you guys remember that psv played with most of there starting players hurt .
alex was a big miss in the back lucky pool.

There is nothing lucky about a systematic 3 - nil dismantling of a final 8 CL team, on the road no less. It may be justified to say that PSV was unlucky to have some injury troubles, but that's the way it goes and they were playing at home. Pool was not lucky, they came in and dominated.
You said they were lucky to beat Barcelona as well. Scoring two away goals to win the first leg 2-1 on the road...They gave up a goal in the home leg to make it interesting, but Barcelona was lucky it was that close after Liverpool hit the crossbar twice. With those two shots off the bar for Pool and Barcelona getting the lone goal and a strike off the post; it was a very entertaining, hard-fought, and even matchup. I don't think luck had much to do with it for either side at that stage, and Pool are showing it wasn't luck now by putting in another solid away performance in the final 8.
Congrats to PSV for getting this far, but Pool are showing they belong at this stage of the CL and no one wants to face them at this point.

In my opinion i think Liverpool is gonna win the Champions League. They totally crushed PSV.Steven Gerrard is at the top of his game and the rest of the squad is playing very well. They beat barcelona and there was on luck in that game. Besides a goal is a goal. Whether its a scrappy goal or not.

Thank you Heath & Freak. At least you two are fair & give credit where it's due. I don't know where all this English hating comes from. Liverpool are not my team but I admire them for playing spirited inspired soccer. When I go to a game or watch one on tv of course like anyone I have teams I pull for. Most important I enjoy watching a good game with creative playing. As I mentioned all the teams' in the final 8 have injuries & as it stands all these teams have players coming off the bench that could create yet another world class team. There are no weak teams or weak players'in the final 8. They are all good. Just like Liverpool is good. All these haters' here need to get a life.

I am a United fan, so I don't enjoy coming to Liverpool's defense. But the truth of the matter is, there is no luck involved when Liverpool play in the Champions League. Rafa Benitez has perfected his tactics and they work. Gerrard seems to save his best for when his team needs him the most. In this competition, Liverpool are a dangerous team.

Thank you Ghost Rider, Thank you! I'm not a liverpool fan either but I admire their hard work ethic & spirited style of play. I enjoy watching EPL games just lke I enjoy watching games from Germany & then anytime I can find a Juve game on or a Valencia game on I enjoy watching them as well. Much more than watching games from my native Brazil believe it or not. I just enjoy good soccer. These other two here for the most part are pure haters' The one of them as kind of toned it down a bit but the other one is like a broken record, always stuck on the same track, over & over. People are free to have their own views, likes & dislikes but the national mentality should be kept out of it. To me life is much too short to get caught up in that uneducated blabber. It's great to see teams live Liverpool & Valencia still going strong & playing well. I'm just glad I'm not one of those traveling fan's right now as Europe in general has turned out to be a dangerous play to go see a game & it seems everywhere in Europe it's like that now which is too bad.

Well said Spivey Point, it really makes me sad about the stuff that's going on off the pitch. It's a shame that such a beautiful game has such an ugly side.
Posted by: Ghost Rider | April 5, 2007 06:08 PM
I think most people that go to games are just there to enjoy the games but there is a element of ignorant uneducated people full of hate that ruin things for everybody else. I read on the news that they were not even searching people going into the stadium for the United/Roma gave now how foolish is that? I mean, that's asking for trouble. Come on! They need to be much more strict with games. Of course nobody likes being under a microscope but still if trouble makers' know there is little chance of being searched they will keep doing it.
Posted by: Jenson | April 5, 2007 08:21 PM
Exactly......why should the rest suffer for the ignorance of a few!the great game should be enjoyed. What is this crap about fearing for your life, thus the stadiums are half empty???
