Riquelme's Villarreal career is over!

In case there were any doubts about that, the club's general manager, Jose Manuel Llaneza, has offered confirmation, declaring that it is "impossible" that the Argentine returns to play for the Yellow Submarines.

Riquelme is currently on loan until the 30th of June, following which he has another year of contract remaining. However, the club are now set to terminate his contract.

Llaneza insisted that he had offered Riquelme "a worthy exit" from the club, but that he had been left with little choice after the player did not offer "any help in solving the problem."

In a rather honest admission, Llazena wanted to steer clear of affixing blame for the way things turned sour, and simply wanted to close the chapter.

"Perhaps I am one of the guilty ones," he said humbly, speaking on local radio. "He behaved like a child, but sometimes they do things you tell them not to do.

"Then, when you say something to them, they get upset."

Riquelme is now set to be available as a free agent. At 29, he still has a few good years left, but the big question is: who will be willing to take the risk after the way things went awry with Villarreal.

Psychological issues, home sickness, and various other factors suggest that he will probably continue in Argentina. But then again, nobody can rule out a gutsy coach taking a chance and landing him on the cheap!
