The Start Of Something Special - Totti

(Goal.com) - Roma skipper Francesco Totti has hailed the Coppa Italia triumph as the beginning of a new era for the club.

A 2-1 defeat to Inter at the San Siro saw Roma triumph 7-4 on aggregate and lift the Coppa Italia after succumbing to the Nerazzurri at the final hurdle for two years in a row.

"This trophy is not the last, rather, the first of a number of successes that must follow," said the Roma skipper after the match.

"We are all delighted with this triumph, as we were all used to seeing Inter win, seeing as they have beaten us in various finals over the last few year.

"After the first leg, we came here, believing that we could get the better of them and win the competition.

"It is only right that we have been able to thrust an important trophy into the air."

He also hailed Luciano Spalletti for his impact, and called for a few reinforcements over the summer so as to take the next few steps forwards.

"We had crumbled before he was appointed, but he has compacted us together again and I thank him for that," he said.

"Now we want to continue on this path with this squad and possibly a few new faces. It is up to the club and the coach to decide on who."

Though they might have been knocked out of the Champions League I still think Roma has one of the best teams in Europe. I really like their style of play. Even more so than Milan's. The way they fllod the midfield makes it difficult for the teams they play to adjust. There first match against Manchester United proves my point as United had such a hard time being able to counter Roma's attacking midfield. Of course United came back to life in game two but still I think Roma will only get better next year.

They are a very young team with great future stars in Mancini and De Rossi. Although I do think Totti can go missing during big games, he is instrumental to the teams success in the future.

I think Roma are a quality striker away from being a top European contender.

Roma is an ok team & they did well in CL this year. I can't stand Totti though. He's a good player & all that but everytime the dude opens his mouth he comes off like a dumb blonde!

Roma has become one of my favorite teams, they impressed me in the CL, and in serie A, the Italian cup was a nice trophy, and it will have to come. They don't have the money, nor the roster as the big names, but they sure can compete with them, the game at old trafford was a learning experience.I would like to see them replay it,but Man U is one of the big teams I;m referring to (ManU,Chelsea,Liverpool,Real Madrid,Barcellona,Bayern M,Milan,Inter & Juve etc.. now Roma is mentioned as well....good for them! and as for Totti ? he's greta but his character is questionable, the real deal at Roma is DE ROSSI !!!!

People can say what they want about Totti but he's still a great player.

Well said Rasputin. Italy won the Cup with Totti a shell of himself. I can only imagine how they would have played with Totti at full strength.

Well you know Rider. I've always been a fan of Italian Soccer. As you might have read here on the post I have spoken to Giova of my friend Eddie's passing. Eddie was from Argentina but his family from generations back was from the old country (Italy) So it seems when the World Cup would roll up He & I were always pulling for Argentina & Italy. Being Irish however I was very happy in World Cup 94 when my boys' beat Italy which Eddie of course said would never happen. I remember before that game he told me ... Prepare to be murdered! So I always ribbed him about that game ! Eddie was not only a great player that I was lucky enough to play along side with. He was also a great person as well & I'm going to miss him! So when I pull for Argentina or Italy in the World Cup or pull for Juve, Roma or one of the Milans' or even Boca Jrs' who Eddie played for so many years ago I also pull for Eddie. I lost the best friend in the world. I blinked my eye on May 9th 2007 & my life changed with his passing. I have faith though so I know I will see him again & we will get into that Irish/ Argentina/Italain banter we always got into. You know some people you meet in life really change us in a good way. Becoming teammates with Eddie & more important becoming friends' with Eddie changed me in a good way & I'm a better person for it. I hope his spirit is at peace now. Cheers to Soccer!

Cheers!

I figured you would get a kick out of knowing all this stuff Giova :) Eddie & I were always ribbing one another! It was pretty funny stuff. Of course it was always in good spirit though!

Guys, I just get frustrated when players such as Totti, Rooney, Ballack are given this stigma because they don't have the greatest personalities. Maradona wasn't exactly a model citizen, but that shouldn't take away from the amazing player that he was. I just wish people would just measure a player by what he does on the pitch. Not because he comes off sounding dumb or rude in the press.

I don't think theres to many people out there who wouldn't want Totti in their midfeild. I'm not a big fan of his personality traits and characteristics, but boy can he play. When Totti is in form he is an absolte artist on the pitch, with great creativity and a better finish. He's still a dizz though.
