365 Q & A With Thomas Rongen

(Soccer365.com) - The U.S U-20 men’s national team has more talent and depth than ever but head coach Thomas Rongen knows it will be a difficult task when his team opens their U-20 World Cup campaign. The former Ajax player took a moment to speak with Soccer365 about the tournament and his team.

By Andrew Rogers

If U.S fans are to get excited about any of their national sides’ on the global stage, it would surely be the U-20’s and their forth coming campaign in Canada. Names like Bradley, Adu and Altidore would inspire confidence in any supporter.

But despite boasting a squad that has a new level of depth, and an entire roster of players that can make a positive impact, Head Coach Tom Rongen remains skeptical about his side’s chances of doing well in Canada.

While acknowledging his side has a new level of firepower, and deserved levels of confidence when playing the world’s big guns, he is concerned at the lack of first team experience the players have at the top level, and the fact that competing nations can unleash talents like Lionel Messi and Ronaldinho in previous tournaments.

Soccer 365 caught up with the former Ajax player to discuss in detail, what should be one of the most exciting World Cup campaigns in the history of U.S men’s soccer.

The U-20’s produced a great result against Chile how have the preparations gone?

Our preparation has gone well we played two games against good opposition. Chile draw Argentina and Brazil in their pre qualifier fixtures, and have four or five guys that will play in Europe next year. We got the result and we managed the game well, so even though we had some poor patches we didn’t give anything away. That is very encouraging for this side. We will go as far as the way we defend as a unit, and our technical players buying into our defensive concept. The goals also came from great offensive play. We have players that can produce in tight games which is important in big tournaments. We are going there as a confident team.

You have some huge names in the side, can you improve on the 2005 campaign?

You never know. You look at the side I coached in 2003 and there are some similarities, but can you compare a Eddie Johnson with Jose Altidore or Freddy Adu with Bobby Convey? That is the comparison and then again in 2005 we had some very special players. I think for us at youth level from a realistic stand point getting out of the group will be the main achievement, and then if we get there, it is one game at a time, we have the capabilities to go far.

Is this the best squad you have had?

No I don’t think so. Just because we have more pro’s than in previous years it doesn’t automatically make it a better team. For example Dempsey was a college player that emerged, being a pro’s doesn’t count for everything and in many ways at a professional level we still have a long way to go in comparison to the world game. We don’t play enough games in the reserve league and a lot of these players don’t get first team competition at their respective clubs. Having more pro’s doesn’t mean we will be more successful.

What will be your strengths? You have some serious firepower going forward.

We do. Adu, Altidore and Bradley will make a difference and you could see the precision going forward against Chile. Altidore although he is the youngest player in the squad could play in another World Cup for us, he doesn’t have the most experience and talent isn’t enough at this level because there are many talented players out there. But between the players I mentioned and Ferrari we have the forwards to create chances and finish games off. But the key to our success will be how well we can play as a defensive unit, and how well the players will embrace that and so far it has been very positive.

Does the tournament being played in Canada help?

Yes. The little things help, the winning is in the detail. When we played New Zealand they had traveled from Australia to LA to Mexico City, to Costa Rica, Miami and then to New York. They are physically and emotionally shattered before the tournament has even started. It’s their first tournament and a new experience for them but for us to have been up there once already, and to have slept in the same hotels and knowing the practice facilities and grounds, this can sometimes make a difference. It won’t make you a world champion. We have played in other countries and not had that level of preparation and done very well like the UAE in 2003 but clearly the players that don’t travel well will be more comfortable and familiar.

What can you tell us about Gabriel Ferrari?

Gabe Ferrari is playing in Italy but has not got too many minutes at the moment, he played 20 minutes in a cup game recently and has played for the reserves. Like any young player he still has a lot to grow in terms of his technical ability and tactically. But we feel with his size and his pretty decent feet and good physical qualities he is a guy with very strong upsides. We brought him in very late in the process. He can help us as a starter and coming off the bench, and I think the one thing we have done well over the last 2-3 cycles. Due to the fact that players are turning pro at a younger age we are deeper now in terms of quality. In the past once you got past players 12-13 you started getting a little bit concerned, but now the decisions involved for players 19 through to 21 are very tough for us and that is great. From a quality stand point we have become a lot deeper. The sessions are a lot better and the starters are being pushed a lot harder for their places. There is a healthy and competitive team spirit and in think on any given day the whole squad can contribute and Gabe very much is one of those guys.

The squad consists of College players through to EPL players does this wide spectrum of affect the squad?

Basile Pleased With Patience

(Soccer365.com) - Argentina coach Alfio Basile lauded his players’ cool in the face of a yeoman’s effort from the U.S. National Team on Thursday night forced them to wait until the last half hour for the goals to come.

The Americans showed well for themselves for over an hour, but three late striker made the Abiceleste difference.

"We stayed calm," said Basile. "My players worked and were rewarded."

"(The) USA were tactically very good and made it difficult for us, but we knew that at some point they would tire."

Barcelona Present Eric Abidal

(Goal.com) - Éric Abidal could not hide his delight after signing for FC Barcelona and said that moving to Camp Nou was like a dream come true.

The French international was introduced to the media on Friday after penning a four-year deal following his move from Lyon for €14m and was grateful to the club for pushing on with the lengthy negotiations.

"It has always been my ambition to play for Barça," he said. "Now the goal is the same as always, to carry on winning.

"I am proud to be here today. I want to thank all those people that helped to make this all possible."

After signing Thierry Henry and Yaya Touré earlier in the week, Barça have increased their French contingent and Abidal believes that could ease his adaptation to the club.

"It is important that there is a group that speaks French and we have that link," he stated before revealing that he sought the advice of compatriot Lilian Thuram before agreeing to the deal.

"I talked to Thuram about the atmosphere. For a new player all the details are important," he added.

Abidal also saw the chance to play in la Primera as too good an opportunity to turn down, after winning three consecutive titles during his time at Lyon.

"The Spanish league is the level I want to play at," he said. "I have always wanted to play here and follow the league a lot."

Barça's technical secretary, Txiki Begiristain, explained why the club had fought so hard to capture the left-sided defender and believes his arrival will add balance to the squad.

"We want to achieve some balance. If we are going to have great forwards, we also have to be strong at the back," he said.

"The left-back position is one that could be improved

"Abidal is a player who is incredibly professional, very quick and fits all the criteria. He can go forward and is very strong at the back."

Bradley Looks For Complete Show

(Soccer365.com) - Fresh from a 4-1 loss to Argentina, U.S. coach Bob Bradley has quickly switched his focus to Monday’s Copa América Group D test against Paraguay.

The game two foes scored a 5-0 win over Colombia on Thursday to vault to the top of the table, and Bradley knows his green side must maintain focus and intensity for the entire game to advance to the knockout phase.

“They have to be extremely motivated,” he told reporters. “It’s tough because they don’t have to play teams with the caliber of players like Argentina week in and week out.”

“If you haven’t had that experience on several occasions, then you have to learn it at some stage,” added Bradley, who suffered his first USMNT defeat. “Unfortunately – or fortunately, depending how you look at it – we’re here with a team that is learning as it goes.”

“I think we impressed a lot of people for 60-65 minutes - the question is can we do it now for 90 minutes?”

Wynne Not In Mood To Look Back

(Soccer365.com) - Despite a solid showing against Argentina, U.S. defender Marvell Wynne will prefer to turn his attention to Monday’s match with Paraguay, from which they need a result to stay in Copa América knockout contention.

The right back held his own with some of the world’s best until the U.S. tired in the final half hour to end up with a 4-1 loss.

“This is not over yet,” vowed the Toronto FC starlet. “We would have loved a result against Argentina, especially since it was the first game, but we just need to put it behind us and learn from it.”

“We’ve got to move on.”

Sissoko Extends Reds Contract

(Goal.com) - Mohamed Sissoko has signed a new contract with Liverpool that will tie him to the Reds until 2011, and immediately vowed to fight to regain his first-team place at Anfield.

Sissoko is the latest Liverpool player to commit his future to the club, ending speculation that he would leave this summer, with Juventus having been reportedly interested in the 22-year-old Mali midfielder.

He joins captain Steven Gerrard, Jamie Carragher, Xabi Alonso and Jose Reina in signing long-term deals with the Reds this summer.

Sissoko joined Liverpool from Valencia in summer 2005, and some pundits feel he has been the club's most improved player under manager Rafael Benitez.

However, he has suffered more than one serious injury while at Anfield, and lost his place as the team's holding midfielder when Javier Mascherano arrived from West Ham last January.

But after penning his new contract, Sissoko told the club's official website, www.liverpoolfc.tv: "I feel fresh and can't wait for the new season to start.

"I am injury-free and, although I know I'll face a battle for a place in the team as we have so many great midfielders, I'm prepared to fight for a position.

"It obviously gave me a huge boost to my confidence that the manager believes in me and wanted me to stay at the club. Now I want to repay him on the pitch."

Sissoko added that he never contemplated leaving Merseyside.

"It was never in my thoughts to leave Liverpool," he said.

"I read about the speculation linking me with other clubs but I am already at a big, big club and it's an honour for me to be able to call myself a Liverpool player."

U.S. MNT Returns To Copa Field

(Soccer365.com) - The United States men’s national team will open their 2007 Copa American campaign against Argentina on Thursday night in Venezuela. It will mark the U.S. third appearance in the South American regional championship, having playing in 1993 and 1995 as well.

The U.S. has played Argentina seven times in their history, holding a lifetime record of 2-5-0 against the South American juggernaut and will be facing a difficult task if they are to improve their record.

With the focus on winning the Gold Cup, Bob Bradley expected to take an inexperienced crew to the tournament. There are 16 players on the roster who have 10 caps or less. Fourteen players are under the age of 25, with Eddie Gaven representing the team’s youngest at 20 years old.

There are three members of the group who are entering their first-ever camp with the MNT and will be in search of their first cap: Colorado Rapids forward Hercules Gomez, FC Dallas midfielder Drew Moor and Toronto FC defender Marvell Wynne

Despite the youth on the field, the Red, White and Blue has veteran Kasey Keller between the sticks. The Borussia Moenchengladbach player earned his 100th cap in his last outing and is the only player to appear in a Copa America.

The match will be broadcast live at 8:30 p.m. ET on GolTV and Telefutura. Fans can also follow all the action live on ussoccer.com's MatchTracker.

Castillo Basks In Upset Glow

(Soccer365.com) - Mexico attack wizard Nery Castillo was in the mood to celebrate after helping top Copa América opening foe Brazil on Wednesday night with a special opening strike.

The Olympiakos dazzler collected, beat a defender and fired home, all without letting the ball touch the ground, but he was more pleased by the team reward.

"This match was very important for me," intimated Castillo. "I have been waiting to face Brazil for a long time."

"They are the best national team in the world and have the best players, but we beat them playing a really good match."

Sanchez: Copa Semifinal Or Bust

(Soccer365.com) - After stunning Brazil in their Copa América opener, Mexico coach Hugo Sanchez says he is charging the team with the assignment to make the final four of the tourney, and no less.

Spectacular first half goals from Nery Castillo and Ramon Morales gave El Trii al they would need to see off the Seleçao.

“We have done a good job of improving, little by little, our performance and we demonstrated that against Brazil, one of the best national teams in the world,” he exclaimed in the aftermath of the 2-0 Wednesday night upset in Venezuela.

“It is not a promise, but a responsibility that the team must reach the semifinals.”

Real Madrid Sack Capello

(Goal.com) - The worst-kept secret in Spanish football is out as Real Madrid have sacked coach Fabio Capello, a mere 11 days after the Italian guided them to their first league title since 2003.

Capello, 61, still had two years left to run on his contract at the Bernabeu. But his fate was sealed by steady criticism about his tactics and man management.

Real president Ramon Calderon told Marca newspaper: "We've laid the foundations, but we need to find a more enthusiastic way of playing."

German coach and ex-Real player Bernd Schuster is the heir-apparent, having negotiated an amicable release from his job at Getafe.

Capello is in the unusual position of having managed Real on two occasions, both for one season only, and winning the Spanish title for them each time.

Having previously triumphed in 1996-97 with Madrid, he returned last summer from Juventus on a three-year contract.

When Calderon appointed him last July Capello's brief was to instil discipline among some galactic egos and clearing out the dead wood that had piled up in the squad.

But there is a view in Spain that he paid the price for pushing David Beckham out the Bernabeu exit door.

Once Beckham confirmed he was joining LA Galaxy at the end of the season, Capello publicly declared that the ex-England skipper would never be considered for Real's first team again.

But Don Fabuo was forced to eat humble pie on that one, and it was Beckham's superb form that inspired Real's late and somewhat unexpected surge to the title.

History is repeating itself in one sense as Real again show they have little sentiment as far as successful managers are concerned.

The club's last Spanish title victory in 2003 was not enough to keep the much admired Vicente del Bosque in his job, and German coach Jupp Heynckes was also sacked after guiding Real to the Champions League title in 1998.

Real's sporting director Predrag Mijatovic said: "We have taken the decision not to continue with Fabio Capello next season.

"It was a difficult decision but a unanimous one based on an exhaustive report I made to the board.

"We don't think Capello is the right person to lead Real Madrid into the future given what we want this club to achieve.

"Now we have time to think over who will be the next head coach."

Capello has had a distinguished if controversial career in football management. The former Italan international player previously managed AC Milan and AS Roma in addition to Real and Juventus, and has won a league title with every club he has managed.

Forlan: Watch Out For Perú

(Soccer365.com) - Despite their mediocre record and inner turmoil of recent years, Uruguay forward Diego Forlan has warned everyone not to discount an attack-minded Perú side at Copa América.

The team will employ a seasoned offense that features buzzing free kick wizard Jefferson Farfán running off of true target man Claudio Pizarro.

"Perú are a good team who have well known players," observed Forlan of their Group A foes. "Their attack has players that can score goals, and they have lots of variety."

"They are a strong side that play better every time."

"We shouldn’t only be preoccupied with attacking, but also with defending - even more so because of the players they have," he asserted. "We mustn’t underestimate any rival,"

Henry Left Arsenal With Wenger's Blessing

(Goal.com) - Thierry Henry joined Barcelona with the blessing of Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger.

Following the completion of Henry's £16.15 million move to Camp Nou on Monday afternoon, Wenger told the club's official website: "It was Thierry's decision to leave Arsenal but he goes with my blessing. On behalf of everyone at the club, we wish him the very best for the future."

Henry joined the Gunners from Juventus for £10.5million in August 1999 and went on to score a club record 226 goals in an Arsenal shirt, winning Premier League titles, FA Cups and a host of individual honours along the way.

Wenger has no doubt that the French striker, 29, will enter Arsenal folklore as one of the greatest players ever to have represented the north London club.

He added: "Thierry has been tremendous for us since he arrived in 1999. He has excelled both as part of a team and individually. In short, he has become an Arsenal legend.

"Personally, I would like to thank Thierry for the huge contribution he has made to the club's success over the past eight years.

"To his great credit, he has mixed skill and style together with an appetite for winning.

"This wonderful combination was integral to our historical 49 games unbeaten run and all the honours he won at Arsenal, together with Thierry becoming the club's record goalscorer - an achievement which in my view is unlikely to be surpassed."

Henry himself said he would always have a good relationship with Wenger, whom he hoped would stay at Arsenal for as long as possible.

"If he goes it will be very difficult - but I can't talk for someone else.

"The relationship I had with Arsene was out of this world - you can't imagine. I was talking to him about private stuff, about anything.

"That relationship goes beyond me going to Barcelona. We didn't have a fight [about Henry leaving].

"We sat down and talked and we both respected each other and my relationship with him will always remain whatever happens."

"I have to show respect to Arsenal, that's why before I left I went to talk to the website. I wanted to be genuine and speak the truth.

"Hopefully they will appreciate what I have done there and I have certainly enjoyed my time over there.

"I always said that if I ever left Arsenal it would have been to play for Barcelona. I am here right now, no disrespect to anybody but that was my choice.

"The way Barcelona play football, the fans, just being here and seeing what I'm noticing right now, it's outstanding. It was always in my mind if I was going to leave it would be for Barcelona Football Club."

Saviola A Real Good Signing - Messi

(Goal.com) - Leo Messi has admitted that he would find it hard to watch Javier Saviola don the all white of Real Madrid next season if he chooses to move to the Bernabéu, but admits that it could be the right move.

Saviola has decided to leave Barça this summer after being offered a contract with heavily reduced wages and Messi is split over where his compatriot goes next.

The duo are currently on international duty together at the Copa América in Venezuela, but the rumours that Madrid are ready to move have not stopped.

"It would be difficult to see him playing in the Real Madrid kit when not long ago he was playing alongside me," Messi stated.

"He is my friend and I want things to go well for him and if it has to be in Madrid, well, I would have preferred him to stay here."

Despite that, Messi recognised that Saviola could not be blamed if he chose to ply his trade with los Merengues after having so little chance to prove himself at Camp Nou last term.

"He has not had many opportunities and it is normal that he is looking for what is best for him in his career," the 19-year-old continued.

"Nobody can deny that Real Madrid is a big club and it would be a great chance for him.

"I think that if, in the end, he goes there, then it will be a good signing for Madrid."

Miroslav Klose Joins Bayern Munich!

(Goal.com) - The early transfer of Miroslav Klose from Werder Bremen to Bayern Munich has just been announced. After weeks of speculation the deal has now been done.

In an announcement to Kicker, it has been revealed that the German striker will join the Bavarian side now rather than at the end of his contract in July 2008.

This ends weeks of speculation. Exact details of the transfer have yet to be agreed, but it is thought that Bayern have raised their initial offer of €10 million to €12 million. The fee could rise to €15 million dependant on Bayern success.

According to sources at Bayern there were amicable discussions between Karl-Heinz Rummenigge and Uli Hoeneß from Bayern’s side and Klaus Allofs and Manfred Müller from Bremen. The transfer should go through on 1st July.

“It has been about a fair solution for both sides” Rummenigge revealed.

Klaus Allofs confirmed, “Bayern Munich have fulfilled our conditions, so that we can give our agreement to this transfer.”

Klose will arrive in Munich on Thursday for a medical examination before signing a four year contract. The 29 year old could then appear at Bayern’s first pre-season training session on Friday.

The first rumours of a move appeared in April, but ever since a poker game over the player has ensued. Bremen made their demands clear, while Bayern remained confident they could get their man on their terms. It had gone very quiet recently, as Bremen stood their ground.

Klose joins Frank Ribéry and Luca Toni as Bayern’s big summer signings. The 'complete overhaul' that Uli Hoeneß promised in May has now taken place.

Bradley Expects More At Copa

(Soccer365.com) - Despite winning their third Gold Cup in the last four editions, U.S. Men’s National Team coach Bob Bradley says the team can still improve quite a bit when it comes to wrapping up wins.

The Americans blew several good chances throughout the tourney when a dagger goal would have essentially sealed victory.

“Finishing games has not been our strong suit in the Gold Cup,” Bradley admitted to reporters after a 2-1 final win over Mexico on Sunday. “At this point we can laugh about it, but nonetheless it’s something that becomes important because you know in big games when it’s one goal that the other team will throw everything they have at the end.”

“In the moments when you get chances to build on that lead you have to take advantage of it.”

Juve Will Compete For Scudetto - Sacchi

(Goal.com) - According to Arrigo Sacchi, Juve will be favoured in the Scudetto race by the fact they won't play in European competitions.

After a year in Serie B, Juventus are back with a vengeance, and according to Arrigo Sacchi they have what it takes to compete for the Scudetto.

According to the ex Milan, Parma and Azzurri coach, the Bianconeri will be competitive in Serie A immediately, despite the fact that they are coming from Serie B and that on paper both Milan teams look superior.

"Juve will fight for the Scudetto even though they come from Serie B," Sacchi said.

"Without European competitions, they will have an advantage over their competitors, and be fresh and more focused.

"Ranieri will be able to organise the team's trainings well during the week, and at the end of the season this will make itself felt, allowing Juventus to earn precious points while other teams may still be involved on two fronts."

The club's management have managed to sign some experienced players like Hasan Salihamidzic (from Bayern), Zdenek Grygera (from Ajax), Tiago (from Lyon), Sergio Almiron (from Empoli), and Vincenzo Iaquinta (from Udinese), as well as convincing the world's number one goalkeeper, Gigi Buffon, to stay on in spite of his doubts.

With more signings on the way, the quality is set to improve further, and should the likes of Milan and Inter start slow, they will have a real fight on their hands!

Parma Offer 10 Million Euros For Guiseppe Rossi

(Goal.com) - The Gialloblu are desperately trying to sign the young Italian striker from Manchester United after leading the Emiliani to survival last season.

Parma want to hold on to Giuseppe Rossi after seeing him in action for the past 6 months at the Tardini stadium.

The Gialloblu have in fact officially presented a 10 million Euro bid to Manchester United to sign the young prodigy from the Red Devils.

The English champions do not seem intentioned on selling their young star, but might opt to re-send him on a loan deal till the end of the season in order to get competitive playing time.

During his time with the Emiliani, Rossi managed to score 9 goals in 16 Serie A games played, thus proving fundamental for the Gialloblu’s survival.

If Parma's bid to get hold of Rossi fails, then the Crociati will target Obinna of Chievo or Antonio Di Natale of Udinese as their main objectives for this transfer market.

Messi Delighted With Henry Deal

(Goal.com) - Barcelona playmaker Lionel Messi says he is pleased to welcome Thierry Henry to the Nou Camp.

The Arsenal striker is moving to Spain in a £16 million deal after agreeing a four-year contract.

"Henry is huge, for that reason he comes to Barca," Messi told El Mundo Deportivo.

"A footballer of his quality, with what he has won and almost 30 years old, does not take the risk of going to a team that is not at its peak.

"Titi has demonstrated over the years that he is a great player. Cesc (Fabregas) always says that Titi is fantastic in training and is even better off the pitch as a friend and a leader."

Questions are being asked about where Henry will fit into a forward line already containing Messi, Ronaldinho and Samuel Eto’o.

"To me, the presence of Henry does not worry me, I am no longer a boy and I know my possibilities," insisted Messi.

"I do not know how we will play, that is an aspect that (manager Frank) Rijkaard must solve.

"But Henry's signing is because Frank will know how to make it work so that we are stronger."

Feilhaber's Strikes Gold; US beats Mexico

After trailing 1-0 at the half, the United States Men's National Team rallied to beat Mexico 2-1 in CONCACAF's Gold Cup Final. Midfielder Benny Feilhaber provided the game winner on an impressive volley in the 73rd minute.

Andrés Guardado kicked off the scoring at the end of the first half, after an excellent string of passes down the right wing. The ball was crossed through the box, and an unmarked Guardado blasted the ball into the net. The goal was Mexico's first goal in the United States against the USMNT in 797 minutes.

17 minutes into the second half, the US found their equalizer. Bring Ching was fouled in the box and Landon Donavon converted his fourth penalty kick of the tournament, his 34th career goal, tying Eric Wynalda atop the career US goal list.

The win qualifies the US for the 2009 Confederations Cup in South Africa.

Reports: Henry To Sign With Barcelona

Spanish news outlets are reporting Friday that longtime Arsenal star Thierry Henry has agreed to a four-year deal with Barcelona.

The 29-year-old French striker has been a Gunner since 1999, setting a club-record 226 goals in 364 appearances. Henry won two EPL titles and four FA Cups during his stint with the London club, but never hoisted a European trophy. He looks set to continue that quest with La Liga's 2007 runners-up and 2006 European Champions.

Alan Smith To Sign For Newcastle

(Goal.com) - Manchester United's Alan Smith is set to sign for Newcastle United after Sam Allardyce reportedly won the race for his signature.

Smith has been deemed surplus to requirements at Old Trafford following the Premiership champions ambitious activity in the transfer market.

The former Leeds United star, who has been used in midfield as well as in attack during his career, has expressed a desire to remain with United, but it now looks as if he will be moving North to St James' Park.

Smith's United career suffered from an horrific leg break during a match against Liverpool, which kept him out for close to a year, but he fought back bravely and played his part in the closing stages of United's Premiership winning season.

He has attacted interest from Aston Villa and Tottenham, but it seems Newcastle have won the race to sign Smith for around £4m.

The prospect of a midfield duo of Smith and Joey Barton will ensure United will not be seen as a soft touch next season.

Inter’s Zanetti Calls For Tevez

(Goal.com) - Inter star Javier Zanetti believes compatriot Carlos Tevez would represent a great signing for the club.

The Nerazzurri continue to be linked with a move for the Argentinian, whose future at West Ham is far from secure.

"It would be a great signing for us because he is a player that never gives up," said Zanetti.

"He would be ideal for Inter, he has great talent and we really hope he will join us."

Inter are in the market for a new striker after missing out on Cagliari’s David Suazo, who controversially joined neighbours Milan this week after seemingly being set to join the Nerazzurri.

A host of clubs have been linked with Tevez, including Manchester United, Liverpool and Real Madrid.

U.S. Advance To Gold Cup Final

(Soccer365.com) - The United States men’s national team defeated Canada 2-1 on Thursday night at Soldier Field in Chicago to advance to the Gold Cup final but were forced to wait to the very end to clinch the victory. Frankie Hejduk and Landon Donovan scored for the U.S.

After taking a 2-0 advantage to half the Red, White and Blue looked to be well on their way to the final. Hejduk opened the scoring connecting on an assist from Donovan in the 39th minute. It was Hejduk’s first goal in 7 years with the national team.

Donovan, who has not had trouble finding the net recently, continued his success from the penalty spot knocking home his attempt moments before the halftime whistle.

Canada was not however going to go quietly. In the second half they kept the scoreline at two with a little help from poor finishing from the U.S. and finally took advantage of their opportunity.

In the 76th minute, Iain Hume dribbled into the box and turned Carlos Bocenegra and fired a blast off the far post and past Kasey Keller.

The Maple Leafs then looked to tie the match in stoppage time when Atiba Hutchinson put the ball past Keller and in the back of the net only to see Mexican referee Benito Archundia calling him for offside, a call that replays seems to show was generous to the U.S. cause.

The U.S. will play the winner of the Mexico vs Guadeloupe match on Sunday in the Gold Cup final. The U.S. will be without goalscorer Hejduk, who picked up his second yellow in as many games, and Michael Bradley who saw red in the 89th minute.

Liverpool Ready To Break Record For Torres

(Goal.com) - The Sun claim that Liverpool are prepared to break their transfer record by spending £25million on Atletico Madrid striker Fernando Torres.

Goal.com was first to reveal yesterday that Liverpool officials had flown to Spain to hold talks with Atletico over the 23-year-old Spain international.

The Sun adds that Reds' manager Rafael Benitez and chief executive Rick Parry are confident that Torres can be persuaded to switch to a club with a growing Spanish contingent.

The newspaper recalls that in April Torres was pictured wearing his Atletico captain’s armband with the words ‘You’ll Never Walk Alone’ on the inside, tough the player insisted it had nothing to do with Liverpool, so the Sun may simply have put two and two together to make five.

However, a move to Anfield is now looking more likely if a fee and personal terms can be agreed by the three parties involved.

Atletico are said to be seeking £27million for El Nino. That is the figure in the buy-out clause of Torres' contract.

The player has two years left on his existing Madrid contract, though there has been speculation that Liverpool might offer Atletico Luis Garcia, rated at £7m, as part of the deal. H spent a year with Atletico in 2003.

Benitez's interest in signing Torres is being seem by many as the acid test of the resolve of George Gillette and Tom Hicks, Liverpool's new American owners.

All Liverpool fans' eyes are on Anfield to see how much the two tycoons are prepared to plough into the club that they purchased in February. If they proceed and capture such a high-profile star as Torres, it will send a powerful message to their competitors.

Buying Torres would undoubtedly involve breaking the previous highst fee paid out by Liverpool — £14m to Auxerre for Djibril Cisse in 2004.

Benitez sees Torres as the regular goalscorer they have lacked since Michael Owen left for Real Madrid in 2004.

With Atletico not playing in Europe next season, a move to a club involved in the Champions League may well appeal to Torres, who chose to remain in Spain last summer when Chelsea were keen on signing him.

He has a good record, scoring 82 goals in 212 appearances for Atletico, plus and 14 in 42 matches for Spain.

If Torres does arrive on Merseyside, it could herald the exit of Craig Bellamy, who has recently been linked with a possible move to Roma, Juventus or even back to Newcastle.

Schuster Eyeing Schneider As Beckham Replacement

(Goal.com) - Reports in Germany claim that Bernd Schuster will make Schneider his first target if he takes over at Madrid. The German international will replace David Beckham.

Should Fabio Capello leave the newly crowned La Liga champions - as is expected now - and Schuster take over, then it is clear the new boss will look to bring in some of his own players in order to prepare for their title defence next season.

One name being mentioned is that of 33 year old Bayer Leverkusen midfielder Bernd Schneider. The Bayer captain had a good World Cup with Germany, and has just had another fantastic season in the Bundesliga.

According to Bayer Leverkusen Sports director Rudi Völler: “Schneider had a great second half to the season. For me he was the Player of the Year.”

He is a hard working right sided, who can provide a steady supply of quality crosses with both feet, and also double up as a full back if need be, and representative of the philosophy Schuster would want to impose on the club.

He lined up against Real Madrid in the 2002 Champions League final - won by that magical Zidane goal - and had admitted he will listen to an offer from Los Merengues.

“I have heard of Madrid’s interest and if they want me then I would have to listen,” he is quoted as saying in ‘Express'.

Bernd Schuster himself is on record as saying “Real Madrid are missing a player like him at the moment.”

If Schneider does indeed make the move to the Bernabeu, he would follow compatriot Christoph Metzelder, and also follow in the footsteps of greats such as Günther Netzer, Paul Breitner, Bernd Schuster, and Bodo Illgner.

Official: Juventus Sign Tiago And Almiron

(Goal.com) - It has now been confirmed that the Old Lady have completed the signings of Tiago and Almiron.

While the Almiron deal was almost done yesterday, reports this morning had suggested that Tiago and Fabio Quagliarella had been signed last night.

There is no news on the Udinese striker yet (Udinese secured Quagliarella from Sampdoria yesterday), but Tiago has now completed his move from Lyon.

The former Braga, Benfica and Chelsea midfielder has signed a four year contract with the club, with Lyon making a cool 15 million. He had cost Chelsea 15 million, but Lyon had then snapped him up for just 10.

As for Almiron, Empoli were handed 7 million Euros by Juve, plus Giovinco on loan, and the co-ownerships of Paro and Volpato. He also signs a four year deal.

With these two moves, Juventus have completed one defensive and one midfield signing, something that was considered paramount.

However, more is to come, it seems. Some expect that the signing of Quagliarella is also close, with 'Corriere dello Sport' suggesting that a deal was struck with Udinese last night.

The two clubs have just done business over Iaquinta, and the Friuliani are keen to make an immediate profit on the 7 million they spent on half the player's registration.

"There's no such thing as bad timing for Guadalajara," he insisted. "We have plenty of players and talent."

Andrade Prefers Barça Over Real Madrid

(Goal.com) - Jorge Andrade has announced that he would prefer to join FC Barcelona in the summer rather than move to the new champions Real Madrid.

The Portuguese international has been linked to a switch to both the Camp Nou and the Bernabéu after it was made clear that he would leave Deportivo at the end of the campaign.

Now Andrade has come forward to express his desire to move to the Blaugrana to join up with his international team-mate Deco.

"I think my style of play is better suited to Barça," he stated.

Andrade also understands that his move will help fund Depor's summer rebuilding plans and is delighted to be able to help the Galician outfit.

"It is a great chance for the club to make some money," the 29-year-old said.

Despite his public statement though, Andrade could be forced into a move to Madrid as Depor president Augusto Lendoiro has a strong relationship with Ramón Calderón.

After beginning his career at Estrela da Amadora, the central defender made his name during a two-year stint at Porto before joining a successful side at Depor.

In recent season, the Riazor club's downturn in fortunes has led to plans having to be laid to rebuild the squad almost from scratch.

Mourinho Jibes At Liverpool's History

(Goal.com) - Jose Mourinho has reopened the row with with Liverpool about the subject of 'history' as he reminds the Merseysiders of how many trophies his side have won compared to themselves in recent years.

While conceding that Liverpool have a fine European tradition he points out that they are suffering from a 17-year Championship drought.

The issue relates to a row that preceeded Liverpool's Champions League semi-final victory over Chelsea, which they achieved for the second time in three seasons, but Mourinho believes it is now his side that are making history.

He said: "Liverpool fans can continue to chant 'no history' at us but we continue to make it. They have their history, we have our history.

"They are a club with a history in Europe that Chelsea doesn't have, and their history is magnificent, but I think for 17 years they don't win one championship and we won two in the last three years.

"Of the 12 pieces of silverware in English football in the last three years, Chelsea won six, Liverpool two, Manchester United two and Arsenal two, so we won the same number of pieces of silverware that the other three clubs won all together. So I think we are going in the right direction."

Kaka's Celebrates Madrid Title, Fresh Links Surface

(Goal.com) - A close associate of Kaka has once again linked the player with Real Madrid. Pictures of the Brazilian happily being photographed celebrating Madrid's title have only heightened speculation.

Ramon Calderon had hinted yesterday that Kaka would have to force his exit from Milan, leaving the Rossoneri with no choice but to negotiate with Real Madrid.

A couple of events of the past 24 hours hint towards just that happening.

The first of them comes in the form of comment from a close associate of the player, Diogo Kotscho.

"I do not rule out the possibility that Kaka can go to Real Madrid, and I don't rule out the possibility of that happening this season either," he told AS.

"He would be happy both in Madrid and Milan."

The player himself has done precious little to quell rumours, posing with a copy of the very same newspaper (see image), which, on it's cover, celebrates Real Madrid's title triumph.

It is no secret that Franco Baldini and Pedja Mijatovic have been speaking with his agent, and Milan themselves are aware of the situation.

Kaka does not want to explicitly force Milan to sell given his good relations with the Rossoneri, but the message seems to be clear!

Lalas Hits Out At Holiday Talk

(Soccer365.com) - Los Angeles general manager has taken overseas observers to task for continuing to refer to David Beckham’s MLS arrival as a sign the star midfielder is hoping to take it easy in Hollywood.

The England star, fresh from lifting Spanish silver with Real Madrid, will have a breather before joining his new teammates next month.

"We may be Americans, but we're not stupid," Lalas assured The Guardian.

"We know when we're being patronized and I get so irritated when I hear the experts in England talk about David Beckham as if he's going into semi-retirement by leaving Real Madrid for Los Angeles."

"That's ignorance of the first degree because almost every one of those critics has not even seen a single MLS game," he asserted. "It's insulting to us and to our sport to say Beckham is on his way to Hollywood when he's coming to play in one of the most competitive leagues in the world."

"There are a lot of stars in European football who would struggle over here. But Beckham has done his homework on this league, and his teammates, and he recognizes the merit of American soccer."

No Intention To Disrespect Inter - Galliani

(Goal.com) - Milan vice president Adriano Galliani insisted that the signing of David Suazo was not to spite Inter Milan.

"There is no intention to disrespect Inter," said Galliani. "We followed Suazo last year as well.

"[Cagliari president] Cellino said that the negotiations with Inter were over and so we started and concluded a new negotiation."

While insisting that Milan were not looking to put one over Inter, he did reveal a hint of a grudge from last year. Milan had been speaking with Zlatan Ibrahimovic when Inter snapped him up.
