365 Q & A With Thomas Rongen

(Soccer365.com) - The U.S U-20 men’s national team has more talent and depth than ever but head coach Thomas Rongen knows it will be a difficult task when his team opens their U-20 World Cup campaign. The former Ajax player took a moment to speak with Soccer365 about the tournament and his team.

By Andrew Rogers

If U.S fans are to get excited about any of their national sides’ on the global stage, it would surely be the U-20’s and their forth coming campaign in Canada. Names like Bradley, Adu and Altidore would inspire confidence in any supporter.

But despite boasting a squad that has a new level of depth, and an entire roster of players that can make a positive impact, Head Coach Tom Rongen remains skeptical about his side’s chances of doing well in Canada.

While acknowledging his side has a new level of firepower, and deserved levels of confidence when playing the world’s big guns, he is concerned at the lack of first team experience the players have at the top level, and the fact that competing nations can unleash talents like Lionel Messi and Ronaldinho in previous tournaments.

Soccer 365 caught up with the former Ajax player to discuss in detail, what should be one of the most exciting World Cup campaigns in the history of U.S men’s soccer.

The U-20’s produced a great result against Chile how have the preparations gone?

Our preparation has gone well we played two games against good opposition. Chile draw Argentina and Brazil in their pre qualifier fixtures, and have four or five guys that will play in Europe next year. We got the result and we managed the game well, so even though we had some poor patches we didn’t give anything away. That is very encouraging for this side. We will go as far as the way we defend as a unit, and our technical players buying into our defensive concept. The goals also came from great offensive play. We have players that can produce in tight games which is important in big tournaments. We are going there as a confident team.

You have some huge names in the side, can you improve on the 2005 campaign?

You never know. You look at the side I coached in 2003 and there are some similarities, but can you compare a Eddie Johnson with Jose Altidore or Freddy Adu with Bobby Convey? That is the comparison and then again in 2005 we had some very special players. I think for us at youth level from a realistic stand point getting out of the group will be the main achievement, and then if we get there, it is one game at a time, we have the capabilities to go far.

Is this the best squad you have had?

No I don’t think so. Just because we have more pro’s than in previous years it doesn’t automatically make it a better team. For example Dempsey was a college player that emerged, being a pro’s doesn’t count for everything and in many ways at a professional level we still have a long way to go in comparison to the world game. We don’t play enough games in the reserve league and a lot of these players don’t get first team competition at their respective clubs. Having more pro’s doesn’t mean we will be more successful.

What will be your strengths? You have some serious firepower going forward.

We do. Adu, Altidore and Bradley will make a difference and you could see the precision going forward against Chile. Altidore although he is the youngest player in the squad could play in another World Cup for us, he doesn’t have the most experience and talent isn’t enough at this level because there are many talented players out there. But between the players I mentioned and Ferrari we have the forwards to create chances and finish games off. But the key to our success will be how well we can play as a defensive unit, and how well the players will embrace that and so far it has been very positive.

Does the tournament being played in Canada help?

Yes. The little things help, the winning is in the detail. When we played New Zealand they had traveled from Australia to LA to Mexico City, to Costa Rica, Miami and then to New York. They are physically and emotionally shattered before the tournament has even started. It’s their first tournament and a new experience for them but for us to have been up there once already, and to have slept in the same hotels and knowing the practice facilities and grounds, this can sometimes make a difference. It won’t make you a world champion. We have played in other countries and not had that level of preparation and done very well like the UAE in 2003 but clearly the players that don’t travel well will be more comfortable and familiar.

What can you tell us about Gabriel Ferrari?

Gabe Ferrari is playing in Italy but has not got too many minutes at the moment, he played 20 minutes in a cup game recently and has played for the reserves. Like any young player he still has a lot to grow in terms of his technical ability and tactically. But we feel with his size and his pretty decent feet and good physical qualities he is a guy with very strong upsides. We brought him in very late in the process. He can help us as a starter and coming off the bench, and I think the one thing we have done well over the last 2-3 cycles. Due to the fact that players are turning pro at a younger age we are deeper now in terms of quality. In the past once you got past players 12-13 you started getting a little bit concerned, but now the decisions involved for players 19 through to 21 are very tough for us and that is great. From a quality stand point we have become a lot deeper. The sessions are a lot better and the starters are being pushed a lot harder for their places. There is a healthy and competitive team spirit and in think on any given day the whole squad can contribute and Gabe very much is one of those guys.

The squad consists of College players through to EPL players does this wide spectrum of affect the squad?

Basile Pleased With Patience

(Soccer365.com) - Argentina coach Alfio Basile lauded his players’ cool in the face of a yeoman’s effort from the U.S. National Team on Thursday night forced them to wait until the last half hour for the goals to come.

The Americans showed well for themselves for over an hour, but three late striker made the Abiceleste difference.

"We stayed calm," said Basile. "My players worked and were rewarded."

"(The) USA were tactically very good and made it difficult for us, but we knew that at some point they would tire."

Barcelona Present Eric Abidal

(Goal.com) - Éric Abidal could not hide his delight after signing for FC Barcelona and said that moving to Camp Nou was like a dream come true.

The French international was introduced to the media on Friday after penning a four-year deal following his move from Lyon for €14m and was grateful to the club for pushing on with the lengthy negotiations.

"It has always been my ambition to play for Barça," he said. "Now the goal is the same as always, to carry on winning.

"I am proud to be here today. I want to thank all those people that helped to make this all possible."

After signing Thierry Henry and Yaya Touré earlier in the week, Barça have increased their French contingent and Abidal believes that could ease his adaptation to the club.

"It is important that there is a group that speaks French and we have that link," he stated before revealing that he sought the advice of compatriot Lilian Thuram before agreeing to the deal.

"I talked to Thuram about the atmosphere. For a new player all the details are important," he added.

Abidal also saw the chance to play in la Primera as too good an opportunity to turn down, after winning three consecutive titles during his time at Lyon.

"The Spanish league is the level I want to play at," he said. "I have always wanted to play here and follow the league a lot."

Barça's technical secretary, Txiki Begiristain, explained why the club had fought so hard to capture the left-sided defender and believes his arrival will add balance to the squad.

"We want to achieve some balance. If we are going to have great forwards, we also have to be strong at the back," he said.

"The left-back position is one that could be improved

"Abidal is a player who is incredibly professional, very quick and fits all the criteria. He can go forward and is very strong at the back."

Bradley Looks For Complete Show

(Soccer365.com) - Fresh from a 4-1 loss to Argentina, U.S. coach Bob Bradley has quickly switched his focus to Monday’s Copa América Group D test against Paraguay.

The game two foes scored a 5-0 win over Colombia on Thursday to vault to the top of the table, and Bradley knows his green side must maintain focus and intensity for the entire game to advance to the knockout phase.

“They have to be extremely motivated,” he told reporters. “It’s tough because they don’t have to play teams with the caliber of players like Argentina week in and week out.”

“If you haven’t had that experience on several occasions, then you have to learn it at some stage,” added Bradley, who suffered his first USMNT defeat. “Unfortunately – or fortunately, depending how you look at it – we’re here with a team that is learning as it goes.”

“I think we impressed a lot of people for 60-65 minutes - the question is can we do it now for 90 minutes?”

Wynne Not In Mood To Look Back

(Soccer365.com) - Despite a solid showing against Argentina, U.S. defender Marvell Wynne will prefer to turn his attention to Monday’s match with Paraguay, from which they need a result to stay in Copa América knockout contention.

The right back held his own with some of the world’s best until the U.S. tired in the final half hour to end up with a 4-1 loss.

“This is not over yet,” vowed the Toronto FC starlet. “We would have loved a result against Argentina, especially since it was the first game, but we just need to put it behind us and learn from it.”

“We’ve got to move on.”

Sissoko Extends Reds Contract

(Goal.com) - Mohamed Sissoko has signed a new contract with Liverpool that will tie him to the Reds until 2011, and immediately vowed to fight to regain his first-team place at Anfield.

Sissoko is the latest Liverpool player to commit his future to the club, ending speculation that he would leave this summer, with Juventus having been reportedly interested in the 22-year-old Mali midfielder.

He joins captain Steven Gerrard, Jamie Carragher, Xabi Alonso and Jose Reina in signing long-term deals with the Reds this summer.

Sissoko joined Liverpool from Valencia in summer 2005, and some pundits feel he has been the club's most improved player under manager Rafael Benitez.

However, he has suffered more than one serious injury while at Anfield, and lost his place as the team's holding midfielder when Javier Mascherano arrived from West Ham last January.

But after penning his new contract, Sissoko told the club's official website, www.liverpoolfc.tv: "I feel fresh and can't wait for the new season to start.

"I am injury-free and, although I know I'll face a battle for a place in the team as we have so many great midfielders, I'm prepared to fight for a position.

"It obviously gave me a huge boost to my confidence that the manager believes in me and wanted me to stay at the club. Now I want to repay him on the pitch."

Sissoko added that he never contemplated leaving Merseyside.

"It was never in my thoughts to leave Liverpool," he said.

"I read about the speculation linking me with other clubs but I am already at a big, big club and it's an honour for me to be able to call myself a Liverpool player."

U.S. MNT Returns To Copa Field

(Soccer365.com) - The United States men’s national team will open their 2007 Copa American campaign against Argentina on Thursday night in Venezuela. It will mark the U.S. third appearance in the South American regional championship, having playing in 1993 and 1995 as well.

The U.S. has played Argentina seven times in their history, holding a lifetime record of 2-5-0 against the South American juggernaut and will be facing a difficult task if they are to improve their record.

With the focus on winning the Gold Cup, Bob Bradley expected to take an inexperienced crew to the tournament. There are 16 players on the roster who have 10 caps or less. Fourteen players are under the age of 25, with Eddie Gaven representing the team’s youngest at 20 years old.

There are three members of the group who are entering their first-ever camp with the MNT and will be in search of their first cap: Colorado Rapids forward Hercules Gomez, FC Dallas midfielder Drew Moor and Toronto FC defender Marvell Wynne

Despite the youth on the field, the Red, White and Blue has veteran Kasey Keller between the sticks. The Borussia Moenchengladbach player earned his 100th cap in his last outing and is the only player to appear in a Copa America.

The match will be broadcast live at 8:30 p.m. ET on GolTV and Telefutura. Fans can also follow all the action live on ussoccer.com's MatchTracker.

Castillo Basks In Upset Glow

(Soccer365.com) - Mexico attack wizard Nery Castillo was in the mood to celebrate after helping top Copa América opening foe Brazil on Wednesday night with a special opening strike.

The Olympiakos dazzler collected, beat a defender and fired home, all without letting the ball touch the ground, but he was more pleased by the team reward.

"This match was very important for me," intimated Castillo. "I have been waiting to face Brazil for a long time."

"They are the best national team in the world and have the best players, but we beat them playing a really good match."

Sanchez: Copa Semifinal Or Bust

(Soccer365.com) - After stunning Brazil in their Copa América opener, Mexico coach Hugo Sanchez says he is charging the team with the assignment to make the final four of the tourney, and no less.

Spectacular first half goals from Nery Castillo and Ramon Morales gave El Trii al they would need to see off the Seleçao.

“We have done a good job of improving, little by little, our performance and we demonstrated that against Brazil, one of the best national teams in the world,” he exclaimed in the aftermath of the 2-0 Wednesday night upset in Venezuela.

“It is not a promise, but a responsibility that the team must reach the semifinals.”

Real Madrid Sack Capello

(Goal.com) - The worst-kept secret in Spanish football is out as Real Madrid have sacked coach Fabio Capello, a mere 11 days after the Italian guided them to their first league title since 2003.

Capello, 61, still had two years left to run on his contract at the Bernabeu. But his fate was sealed by steady criticism about his tactics and man management.

Real president Ramon Calderon told Marca newspaper: "We've laid the foundations, but we need to find a more enthusiastic way of playing."

German coach and ex-Real player Bernd Schuster is the heir-apparent, having negotiated an amicable release from his job at Getafe.

Capello is in the unusual position of having managed Real on two occasions, both for one season only, and winning the Spanish title for them each time.

Having previously triumphed in 1996-97 with Madrid, he returned last summer from Juventus on a three-year contract.

When Calderon appointed him last July Capello's brief was to instil discipline among some galactic egos and clearing out the dead wood that had piled up in the squad.

But there is a view in Spain that he paid the price for pushing David Beckham out the Bernabeu exit door.

Once Beckham confirmed he was joining LA Galaxy at the end of the season, Capello publicly declared that the ex-England skipper would never be considered for Real's first team again.

But Don Fabuo was forced to eat humble pie on that one, and it was Beckham's superb form that inspired Real's late and somewhat unexpected surge to the title.

History is repeating itself in one sense as Real again show they have little sentiment as far as successful managers are concerned.

The club's last Spanish title victory in 2003 was not enough to keep the much admired Vicente del Bosque in his job, and German coach Jupp Heynckes was also sacked after guiding Real to the Champions League title in 1998.

Real's sporting director Predrag Mijatovic said: "We have taken the decision not to continue with Fabio Capello next season.

"It was a difficult decision but a unanimous one based on an exhaustive report I made to the board.

"We don't think Capello is the right person to lead Real Madrid into the future given what we want this club to achieve.

"Now we have time to think over who will be the next head coach."

Capello has had a distinguished if controversial career in football management. The former Italan international player previously managed AC Milan and AS Roma in addition to Real and Juventus, and has won a league title with every club he has managed.

Forlan: Watch Out For Perú

(Soccer365.com) - Despite their mediocre record and inner turmoil of recent years, Uruguay forward Diego Forlan has warned everyone not to discount an attack-minded Perú side at Copa América.

The team will employ a seasoned offense that features buzzing free kick wizard Jefferson Farfán running off of true target man Claudio Pizarro.

"Perú are a good team who have well known players," observed Forlan of their Group A foes. "Their attack has players that can score goals, and they have lots of variety."

"They are a strong side that play better every time."

"We shouldn’t only be preoccupied with attacking, but also with defending - even more so because of the players they have," he asserted. "We mustn’t underestimate any rival,"

Henry Left Arsenal With Wenger's Blessing

(Goal.com) - Thierry Henry joined Barcelona with the blessing of Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger.

Following the completion of Henry's £16.15 million move to Camp Nou on Monday afternoon, Wenger told the club's official website: "It was Thierry's decision to leave Arsenal but he goes with my blessing. On behalf of everyone at the club, we wish him the very best for the future."

Henry joined the Gunners from Juventus for £10.5million in August 1999 and went on to score a club record 226 goals in an Arsenal shirt, winning Premier League titles, FA Cups and a host of individual honours along the way.

Wenger has no doubt that the French striker, 29, will enter Arsenal folklore as one of the greatest players ever to have represented the north London club.

He added: "Thierry has been tremendous for us since he arrived in 1999. He has excelled both as part of a team and individually. In short, he has become an Arsenal legend.

"Personally, I would like to thank Thierry for the huge contribution he has made to the club's success over the past eight years.

"To his great credit, he has mixed skill and style together with an appetite for winning.

"This wonderful combination was integral to our historical 49 games unbeaten run and all the honours he won at Arsenal, together with Thierry becoming the club's record goalscorer - an achievement which in my view is unlikely to be surpassed."

Henry himself said he would always have a good relationship with Wenger, whom he hoped would stay at Arsenal for as long as possible.

"If he goes it will be very difficult - but I can't talk for someone else.

"The relationship I had with Arsene was out of this world - you can't imagine. I was talking to him about private stuff, about anything.

"That relationship goes beyond me going to Barcelona. We didn't have a fight [about Henry leaving].

"We sat down and talked and we both respected each other and my relationship with him will always remain whatever happens."

"I have to show respect to Arsenal, that's why before I left I went to talk to the website. I wanted to be genuine and speak the truth.

"Hopefully they will appreciate what I have done there and I have certainly enjoyed my time over there.

"I always said that if I ever left Arsenal it would have been to play for Barcelona. I am here right now, no disrespect to anybody but that was my choice.

"The way Barcelona play football, the fans, just being here and seeing what I'm noticing right now, it's outstanding. It was always in my mind if I was going to leave it would be for Barcelona Football Club."

Saviola A Real Good Signing - Messi

(Goal.com) - Leo Messi has admitted that he would find it hard to watch Javier Saviola don the all white of Real Madrid next season if he chooses to move to the Bernabéu, but admits that it could be the right move.

Saviola has decided to leave Barça this summer after being offered a contract with heavily reduced wages and Messi is split over where his compatriot goes next.

The duo are currently on international duty together at the Copa América in Venezuela, but the rumours that Madrid are ready to move have not stopped.

"It would be difficult to see him playing in the Real Madrid kit when not long ago he was playing alongside me," Messi stated.

"He is my friend and I want things to go well for him and if it has to be in Madrid, well, I would have preferred him to stay here."

Despite that, Messi recognised that Saviola could not be blamed if he chose to ply his trade with los Merengues after having so little chance to prove himself at Camp Nou last term.

"He has not had many opportunities and it is normal that he is looking for what is best for him in his career," the 19-year-old continued.

"Nobody can deny that Real Madrid is a big club and it would be a great chance for him.

"I think that if, in the end, he goes there, then it will be a good signing for Madrid."

Miroslav Klose Joins Bayern Munich!

(Goal.com) - The early transfer of Miroslav Klose from Werder Bremen to Bayern Munich has just been announced. After weeks of speculation the deal has now been done.

In an announcement to Kicker, it has been revealed that the German striker will join the Bavarian side now rather than at the end of his contract in July 2008.

This ends weeks of speculation. Exact details of the transfer have yet to be agreed, but it is thought that Bayern have raised their initial offer of €10 million to €12 million. The fee could rise to €15 million dependant on Bayern success.

According to sources at Bayern there were amicable discussions between Karl-Heinz Rummenigge and Uli Hoeneß from Bayern’s side and Klaus Allofs and Manfred Müller from Bremen. The transfer should go through on 1st July.

“It has been about a fair solution for both sides” Rummenigge revealed.

Klaus Allofs confirmed, “Bayern Munich have fulfilled our conditions, so that we can give our agreement to this transfer.”

Klose will arrive in Munich on Thursday for a medical examination before signing a four year contract. The 29 year old could then appear at Bayern’s first pre-season training session on Friday.

The first rumours of a move appeared in April, but ever since a poker game over the player has ensued. Bremen made their demands clear, while Bayern remained confident they could get their man on their terms. It had gone very quiet recently, as Bremen stood their ground.

Klose joins Frank Ribéry and Luca Toni as Bayern’s big summer signings. The 'complete overhaul' that Uli Hoeneß promised in May has now taken place.

Bradley Expects More At Copa

(Soccer365.com) - Despite winning their third Gold Cup in the last four editions, U.S. Men’s National Team coach Bob Bradley says the team can still improve quite a bit when it comes to wrapping up wins.

The Americans blew several good chances throughout the tourney when a dagger goal would have essentially sealed victory.

“Finishing games has not been our strong suit in the Gold Cup,” Bradley admitted to reporters after a 2-1 final win over Mexico on Sunday. “At this point we can laugh about it, but nonetheless it’s something that becomes important because you know in big games when it’s one goal that the other team will throw everything they have at the end.”

“In the moments when you get chances to build on that lead you have to take advantage of it.”

Juve Will Compete For Scudetto - Sacchi

(Goal.com) - According to Arrigo Sacchi, Juve will be favoured in the Scudetto race by the fact they won't play in European competitions.

After a year in Serie B, Juventus are back with a vengeance, and according to Arrigo Sacchi they have what it takes to compete for the Scudetto.

According to the ex Milan, Parma and Azzurri coach, the Bianconeri will be competitive in Serie A immediately, despite the fact that they are coming from Serie B and that on paper both Milan teams look superior.

"Juve will fight for the Scudetto even though they come from Serie B," Sacchi said.

"Without European competitions, they will have an advantage over their competitors, and be fresh and more focused.

"Ranieri will be able to organise the team's trainings well during the week, and at the end of the season this will make itself felt, allowing Juventus to earn precious points while other teams may still be involved on two fronts."

The club's management have managed to sign some experienced players like Hasan Salihamidzic (from Bayern), Zdenek Grygera (from Ajax), Tiago (from Lyon), Sergio Almiron (from Empoli), and Vincenzo Iaquinta (from Udinese), as well as convincing the world's number one goalkeeper, Gigi Buffon, to stay on in spite of his doubts.

With more signings on the way, the quality is set to improve further, and should the likes of Milan and Inter start slow, they will have a real fight on their hands!

Parma Offer 10 Million Euros For Guiseppe Rossi

(Goal.com) - The Gialloblu are desperately trying to sign the young Italian striker from Manchester United after leading the Emiliani to survival last season.

Parma want to hold on to Giuseppe Rossi after seeing him in action for the past 6 months at the Tardini stadium.

The Gialloblu have in fact officially presented a 10 million Euro bid to Manchester United to sign the young prodigy from the Red Devils.

The English champions do not seem intentioned on selling their young star, but might opt to re-send him on a loan deal till the end of the season in order to get competitive playing time.

During his time with the Emiliani, Rossi managed to score 9 goals in 16 Serie A games played, thus proving fundamental for the Gialloblu’s survival.

If Parma's bid to get hold of Rossi fails, then the Crociati will target Obinna of Chievo or Antonio Di Natale of Udinese as their main objectives for this transfer market.

Messi Delighted With Henry Deal

(Goal.com) - Barcelona playmaker Lionel Messi says he is pleased to welcome Thierry Henry to the Nou Camp.

The Arsenal striker is moving to Spain in a £16 million deal after agreeing a four-year contract.

"Henry is huge, for that reason he comes to Barca," Messi told El Mundo Deportivo.

"A footballer of his quality, with what he has won and almost 30 years old, does not take the risk of going to a team that is not at its peak.

"Titi has demonstrated over the years that he is a great player. Cesc (Fabregas) always says that Titi is fantastic in training and is even better off the pitch as a friend and a leader."

Questions are being asked about where Henry will fit into a forward line already containing Messi, Ronaldinho and Samuel Eto’o.

"To me, the presence of Henry does not worry me, I am no longer a boy and I know my possibilities," insisted Messi.

"I do not know how we will play, that is an aspect that (manager Frank) Rijkaard must solve.

"But Henry's signing is because Frank will know how to make it work so that we are stronger."

Feilhaber's Strikes Gold; US beats Mexico

After trailing 1-0 at the half, the United States Men's National Team rallied to beat Mexico 2-1 in CONCACAF's Gold Cup Final. Midfielder Benny Feilhaber provided the game winner on an impressive volley in the 73rd minute.

Andrés Guardado kicked off the scoring at the end of the first half, after an excellent string of passes down the right wing. The ball was crossed through the box, and an unmarked Guardado blasted the ball into the net. The goal was Mexico's first goal in the United States against the USMNT in 797 minutes.

17 minutes into the second half, the US found their equalizer. Bring Ching was fouled in the box and Landon Donavon converted his fourth penalty kick of the tournament, his 34th career goal, tying Eric Wynalda atop the career US goal list.

The win qualifies the US for the 2009 Confederations Cup in South Africa.

Reports: Henry To Sign With Barcelona

Spanish news outlets are reporting Friday that longtime Arsenal star Thierry Henry has agreed to a four-year deal with Barcelona.

The 29-year-old French striker has been a Gunner since 1999, setting a club-record 226 goals in 364 appearances. Henry won two EPL titles and four FA Cups during his stint with the London club, but never hoisted a European trophy. He looks set to continue that quest with La Liga's 2007 runners-up and 2006 European Champions.

Alan Smith To Sign For Newcastle

(Goal.com) - Manchester United's Alan Smith is set to sign for Newcastle United after Sam Allardyce reportedly won the race for his signature.

Smith has been deemed surplus to requirements at Old Trafford following the Premiership champions ambitious activity in the transfer market.

The former Leeds United star, who has been used in midfield as well as in attack during his career, has expressed a desire to remain with United, but it now looks as if he will be moving North to St James' Park.

Smith's United career suffered from an horrific leg break during a match against Liverpool, which kept him out for close to a year, but he fought back bravely and played his part in the closing stages of United's Premiership winning season.

He has attacted interest from Aston Villa and Tottenham, but it seems Newcastle have won the race to sign Smith for around £4m.

The prospect of a midfield duo of Smith and Joey Barton will ensure United will not be seen as a soft touch next season.

Inter’s Zanetti Calls For Tevez

(Goal.com) - Inter star Javier Zanetti believes compatriot Carlos Tevez would represent a great signing for the club.

The Nerazzurri continue to be linked with a move for the Argentinian, whose future at West Ham is far from secure.

"It would be a great signing for us because he is a player that never gives up," said Zanetti.

"He would be ideal for Inter, he has great talent and we really hope he will join us."

Inter are in the market for a new striker after missing out on Cagliari’s David Suazo, who controversially joined neighbours Milan this week after seemingly being set to join the Nerazzurri.

A host of clubs have been linked with Tevez, including Manchester United, Liverpool and Real Madrid.

Tevez is currently on international duty as Argentina prepare for the Copa America.

U.S. Advance To Gold Cup Final

(Soccer365.com) - The United States men’s national team defeated Canada 2-1 on Thursday night at Soldier Field in Chicago to advance to the Gold Cup final but were forced to wait to the very end to clinch the victory. Frankie Hejduk and Landon Donovan scored for the U.S.

After taking a 2-0 advantage to half the Red, White and Blue looked to be well on their way to the final. Hejduk opened the scoring connecting on an assist from Donovan in the 39th minute. It was Hejduk’s first goal in 7 years with the national team.

Donovan, who has not had trouble finding the net recently, continued his success from the penalty spot knocking home his attempt moments before the halftime whistle.

Canada was not however going to go quietly. In the second half they kept the scoreline at two with a little help from poor finishing from the U.S. and finally took advantage of their opportunity.

In the 76th minute, Iain Hume dribbled into the box and turned Carlos Bocenegra and fired a blast off the far post and past Kasey Keller.

The Maple Leafs then looked to tie the match in stoppage time when Atiba Hutchinson put the ball past Keller and in the back of the net only to see Mexican referee Benito Archundia calling him for offside, a call that replays seems to show was generous to the U.S. cause.

The U.S. will play the winner of the Mexico vs Guadeloupe match on Sunday in the Gold Cup final. The U.S. will be without goalscorer Hejduk, who picked up his second yellow in as many games, and Michael Bradley who saw red in the 89th minute.

Scoring Summary: 1 2 F

Liverpool Ready To Break Record For Torres

(Goal.com) - The Sun claim that Liverpool are prepared to break their transfer record by spending £25million on Atletico Madrid striker Fernando Torres.

Goal.com was first to reveal yesterday that Liverpool officials had flown to Spain to hold talks with Atletico over the 23-year-old Spain international.

The Sun adds that Reds' manager Rafael Benitez and chief executive Rick Parry are confident that Torres can be persuaded to switch to a club with a growing Spanish contingent.

The newspaper recalls that in April Torres was pictured wearing his Atletico captain’s armband with the words ‘You’ll Never Walk Alone’ on the inside, tough the player insisted it had nothing to do with Liverpool, so the Sun may simply have put two and two together to make five.

However, a move to Anfield is now looking more likely if a fee and personal terms can be agreed by the three parties involved.

Atletico are said to be seeking £27million for El Nino. That is the figure in the buy-out clause of Torres' contract.

The player has two years left on his existing Madrid contract, though there has been speculation that Liverpool might offer Atletico Luis Garcia, rated at £7m, as part of the deal. H spent a year with Atletico in 2003.

Benitez's interest in signing Torres is being seem by many as the acid test of the resolve of George Gillette and Tom Hicks, Liverpool's new American owners.

All Liverpool fans' eyes are on Anfield to see how much the two tycoons are prepared to plough into the club that they purchased in February. If they proceed and capture such a high-profile star as Torres, it will send a powerful message to their competitors.

Buying Torres would undoubtedly involve breaking the previous highst fee paid out by Liverpool — £14m to Auxerre for Djibril Cisse in 2004.

Benitez sees Torres as the regular goalscorer they have lacked since Michael Owen left for Real Madrid in 2004.

With Atletico not playing in Europe next season, a move to a club involved in the Champions League may well appeal to Torres, who chose to remain in Spain last summer when Chelsea were keen on signing him.

He has a good record, scoring 82 goals in 212 appearances for Atletico, plus and 14 in 42 matches for Spain.

If Torres does arrive on Merseyside, it could herald the exit of Craig Bellamy, who has recently been linked with a possible move to Roma, Juventus or even back to Newcastle.

Schuster Eyeing Schneider As Beckham Replacement

(Goal.com) - Reports in Germany claim that Bernd Schuster will make Schneider his first target if he takes over at Madrid. The German international will replace David Beckham.

Should Fabio Capello leave the newly crowned La Liga champions - as is expected now - and Schuster take over, then it is clear the new boss will look to bring in some of his own players in order to prepare for their title defence next season.

One name being mentioned is that of 33 year old Bayer Leverkusen midfielder Bernd Schneider. The Bayer captain had a good World Cup with Germany, and has just had another fantastic season in the Bundesliga.

According to Bayer Leverkusen Sports director Rudi Völler: “Schneider had a great second half to the season. For me he was the Player of the Year.”

He is a hard working right sided, who can provide a steady supply of quality crosses with both feet, and also double up as a full back if need be, and representative of the philosophy Schuster would want to impose on the club.

He lined up against Real Madrid in the 2002 Champions League final - won by that magical Zidane goal - and had admitted he will listen to an offer from Los Merengues.

“I have heard of Madrid’s interest and if they want me then I would have to listen,” he is quoted as saying in ‘Express'.

Bernd Schuster himself is on record as saying “Real Madrid are missing a player like him at the moment.”

If Schneider does indeed make the move to the Bernabeu, he would follow compatriot Christoph Metzelder, and also follow in the footsteps of greats such as Günther Netzer, Paul Breitner, Bernd Schuster, and Bodo Illgner.

Official: Juventus Sign Tiago And Almiron

(Goal.com) - It has now been confirmed that the Old Lady have completed the signings of Tiago and Almiron.

While the Almiron deal was almost done yesterday, reports this morning had suggested that Tiago and Fabio Quagliarella had been signed last night.

There is no news on the Udinese striker yet (Udinese secured Quagliarella from Sampdoria yesterday), but Tiago has now completed his move from Lyon.

The former Braga, Benfica and Chelsea midfielder has signed a four year contract with the club, with Lyon making a cool 15 million. He had cost Chelsea 15 million, but Lyon had then snapped him up for just 10.

As for Almiron, Empoli were handed 7 million Euros by Juve, plus Giovinco on loan, and the co-ownerships of Paro and Volpato. He also signs a four year deal.

With these two moves, Juventus have completed one defensive and one midfield signing, something that was considered paramount.

However, more is to come, it seems. Some expect that the signing of Quagliarella is also close, with 'Corriere dello Sport' suggesting that a deal was struck with Udinese last night.

The two clubs have just done business over Iaquinta, and the Friuliani are keen to make an immediate profit on the 7 million they spent on half the player's registration.

The Mexican league giants will likely be without stars Alberto Medina and Omar Bravo, among others, when they tackle Peruvian power Alianza Lima in Houston.

"Our team will be mostly made up of our (reserve) players and other young prospects," De la Torre told reporters.

"There's no such thing as bad timing for Guadalajara," he insisted. "We have plenty of players and talent."

Andrade Prefers Barça Over Real Madrid

(Goal.com) - Jorge Andrade has announced that he would prefer to join FC Barcelona in the summer rather than move to the new champions Real Madrid.

The Portuguese international has been linked to a switch to both the Camp Nou and the Bernabéu after it was made clear that he would leave Deportivo at the end of the campaign.

Now Andrade has come forward to express his desire to move to the Blaugrana to join up with his international team-mate Deco.

"I think my style of play is better suited to Barça," he stated.

Andrade also understands that his move will help fund Depor's summer rebuilding plans and is delighted to be able to help the Galician outfit.

"It is a great chance for the club to make some money," the 29-year-old said.

Despite his public statement though, Andrade could be forced into a move to Madrid as Depor president Augusto Lendoiro has a strong relationship with Ramón Calderón.

After beginning his career at Estrela da Amadora, the central defender made his name during a two-year stint at Porto before joining a successful side at Depor.

In recent season, the Riazor club's downturn in fortunes has led to plans having to be laid to rebuild the squad almost from scratch.

Mourinho Jibes At Liverpool's History

(Goal.com) - Jose Mourinho has reopened the row with with Liverpool about the subject of 'history' as he reminds the Merseysiders of how many trophies his side have won compared to themselves in recent years.

While conceding that Liverpool have a fine European tradition he points out that they are suffering from a 17-year Championship drought.

The issue relates to a row that preceeded Liverpool's Champions League semi-final victory over Chelsea, which they achieved for the second time in three seasons, but Mourinho believes it is now his side that are making history.

He said: "Liverpool fans can continue to chant 'no history' at us but we continue to make it. They have their history, we have our history.

"They are a club with a history in Europe that Chelsea doesn't have, and their history is magnificent, but I think for 17 years they don't win one championship and we won two in the last three years.

"Of the 12 pieces of silverware in English football in the last three years, Chelsea won six, Liverpool two, Manchester United two and Arsenal two, so we won the same number of pieces of silverware that the other three clubs won all together. So I think we are going in the right direction."

Kaka's Celebrates Madrid Title, Fresh Links Surface

(Goal.com) - A close associate of Kaka has once again linked the player with Real Madrid. Pictures of the Brazilian happily being photographed celebrating Madrid's title have only heightened speculation.

Ramon Calderon had hinted yesterday that Kaka would have to force his exit from Milan, leaving the Rossoneri with no choice but to negotiate with Real Madrid.

A couple of events of the past 24 hours hint towards just that happening.

The first of them comes in the form of comment from a close associate of the player, Diogo Kotscho.

"I do not rule out the possibility that Kaka can go to Real Madrid, and I don't rule out the possibility of that happening this season either," he told AS.

"He would be happy both in Madrid and Milan."

The player himself has done precious little to quell rumours, posing with a copy of the very same newspaper (see image), which, on it's cover, celebrates Real Madrid's title triumph.

It is no secret that Franco Baldini and Pedja Mijatovic have been speaking with his agent, and Milan themselves are aware of the situation.

Kaka does not want to explicitly force Milan to sell given his good relations with the Rossoneri, but the message seems to be clear!

Lalas Hits Out At Holiday Talk

(Soccer365.com) - Los Angeles general manager has taken overseas observers to task for continuing to refer to David Beckham’s MLS arrival as a sign the star midfielder is hoping to take it easy in Hollywood.

The England star, fresh from lifting Spanish silver with Real Madrid, will have a breather before joining his new teammates next month.

"We may be Americans, but we're not stupid," Lalas assured The Guardian.

"We know when we're being patronized and I get so irritated when I hear the experts in England talk about David Beckham as if he's going into semi-retirement by leaving Real Madrid for Los Angeles."

"That's ignorance of the first degree because almost every one of those critics has not even seen a single MLS game," he asserted. "It's insulting to us and to our sport to say Beckham is on his way to Hollywood when he's coming to play in one of the most competitive leagues in the world."

"There are a lot of stars in European football who would struggle over here. But Beckham has done his homework on this league, and his teammates, and he recognizes the merit of American soccer."

No Intention To Disrespect Inter - Galliani

(Goal.com) - Milan vice president Adriano Galliani insisted that the signing of David Suazo was not to spite Inter Milan.

"There is no intention to disrespect Inter," said Galliani. "We followed Suazo last year as well.

"[Cagliari president] Cellino said that the negotiations with Inter were over and so we started and concluded a new negotiation."

While insisting that Milan were not looking to put one over Inter, he did reveal a hint of a grudge from last year. Milan had been speaking with Zlatan Ibrahimovic when Inter snapped him up.

"Will I call Inter? Last year, nobody called me up over Ibrahimovic," he said. "However, we must insist that we did not do this to disrespect anyone.

"I spoke with Silvio Berlusconi over the telephone last night, and he was fine with it, so we went ahead with the negotiations."

Inter Milan will, of course, see it otherwise, particularly as the player had completed a medical.

The disagreement between Inter and Cagliari was over players going the other way as a part of the deal, and Milan were quick to sense the delays and step in.

Bradley Hails Pop’s Influences

(Soccer365.com) - Having done more than enough with his U.S. National Team performances to quiet talks of nepotism, Michael Bradley admitted that having Bob Bradley as a father definitely has its perks – just not of favoritism.

"Obviously there have always been advantages and disadvantages for having my dad be a coach, but it has never got in the way of what I am trying to do," the younger Bradley, whose day job is with Heerenveen in the Netherlands, told Soccernet.

"He taught me how to act, how to carry myself, and taught me that if I came in to training everyday and gave everything I had to the team, that people on the inside would respect that."

Mourinho: Maybe We Won’t Be Favourites

(Goal.com) - Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho believes the pressure will be off the Blues next season.

The Portuguese tactician watched Manchester United win the league and then spend around £40 million on Owen Hargreaves, Nani and Anderson.

Chelsea, meanwhile, have tightened the purse-strings, only signing Steve Sidwell, Claudio Pizarro and Tal Ben Haim on free transfers.

"People ask Chelsea, 'Last season you won two trophies; why did you not win four?' But not many journalists ask Rafael Benitez and Arsene Wenger, 'Why zero?' And not many people ask Manchester United, 'Why only the Premiership?'," said Mourinho in the club's official magazine.

"Is it about money? If it is, I hope that next season the media put pressure on the big spenders because the big spenders for sure will not be Chelsea.

"The spenders will be Liverpool, Manchester United, Tottenham and maybe Arsenal. I don't know, but it won't be Chelsea for sure.

"So maybe at the beginning of next season they will say that Chelsea are not the favourites any more because the club did not spend so much money."

Mourinho then touched on the subject of bringing through young players at Stamford Bridge.

"Young players are a little bit like melons. Only when you open and taste the melon are you 100 per cent sure that the melon is good," he added.

"Sometimes you have beautiful melons but they don't taste very good and some other melons are a bit ugly and when you open them, the taste is fantastic.

"One thing is youth football, one thing is professional football. The bridge is a difficult one to cross and they have to play with us and train with us for us to taste the melon.

"For example, Scott Sinclair, the way he played against Arsenal and Man United, we know the melon we have."

Adu Warns Of Beckham Mis-Hype

(Soccer365.com) - Real Salt Lake playmaker Freddy Adu has suggested some folks should probably keep their David Beckham expectations in check as the England star gets set to arrive to MLS.

The teen phenom knows a thing or two about the pressure to meet expectations, and says fans less familiar with the recently crowned La Liga champion need to appreciate the soccer icon for his particular talents.

"Just watch," Adu warned the Daily Breeze. "Everybody is going to expect him to score three goals a game - when he doesn't, the reaction is going to be ‘Oh, he's paid all that money’.”

"I hope people appreciate what Beckham brings to the game: his skill, his passion, his vision."

Rijkaard To Resign, Barcelona Chasing Wenger - Report

(Goal.com) - The Sun are sensationally claiming that Barcelona have been speaking with Arsene Wenger, not about Thierry Henry, but about signing the coach himself.

The report insists that Frank Rijkaard is set to step down as Barcelona coach following Real Madrid's title triumph on Sunday evening.

Many in the Barcelona camp believe that the Dutchman's limitations have been exposed this season, in the absence of former assistant Henk Ten Cate, who used to work closely with the players, and was also considered to be the tactical expert.

Rijkaard's hold on the squad is said to have slipped since Ten Cate's departure for Ajax, and his tactics have also come under scrutiny.

While Joan Laporta continues to publicly back him, The Sun insist that he will quit following the rather embarrassing collapse in the title race.

They also suggest that "the Spanish giants have made Arsenal boss Wenger their No 1 target to replace him."

'Senior sources' at the Camp Nou have supposedly claimed that talks are underway to bring him to the Camp Nou.

There was a meeting last week in France between Wenger and Barcelona vice president Ferran Soriano, which multiple reports had suggested was to discuss Thierry Henry's future.

The report insists it was not about Henry, but the coach himself.

Wenger has insisted he will see out the final year of his contract at Arsenal, but refused to sign a new deal. He is known to be very frustrated with the lack of funds to challenge for the big players, and David Dein's departure, and Barcelona are looking to hand him a blank cheque if he takes charge.

Should Wenger move, it will, needless to say, facilitate Thierry Henry's move to Barcelona as well. Cesc Fabregas is another player who has publicly pledged his loyalty to Wenger, and not Arsenal.

Schuster Wants To Take Over At Madrid

(Goal.com) - Bernd Schuster has said that he expects to become the new coach of Real Madrid this summer, despite Fabio Capello guiding the club to the league title.

The German coach was reported to have signed a pre-contract agreement to take over at the Bernabéu, when Madrid appeared to have little chance of winning anything in February.

Capello's future at the club is still up in the air despite Sunday's championship triumph and Schuster has made it clear that he wants to take the Italian's place.

"I do not want go mad about this and only want to say that I am geared towards coaching Real Madrid next season," Schuster explained.

"For a long time I have been preparing for to go there and Madrid is part of my plans.

"I am intrigued to see what will happen at Madrid over the next couple of weeks."

While Capello is rumoured to want to stay on, negotiations are due to take place between president Ramón Calderón and sporting director Predrag Mijatovic this week over the coach.

Schuster recognised that the title win could change his plans, but he will is ready to stay on at Getafe and guide them through their first ever European campaign.

"I am the coach of Getafe and still have a contract for another year," he continued.

"As finalists in the Copa del Rey we have qualified for the UEFA Cup, which is something to look forward to and something which I have helped achieve.

"I am secure at Getafe, all the rest is speculation."

Despite linking himself so heavily to a move, Schuster will have created no waves at Getafe as the club president, Ángel Torres Sánchez, is a staunch Real Madrid fan and understands the German's motives.

Mourinho: I Want Benny McCarthy

(Goal.com) - Jose Mourinho has admitted that he would love to have Benni McCarthy at his displosal once again.

Jose is known to be a great admirer of the South African, who was a key member of his hugely successful Porto side.

He made a £1.8million from Porto last summer, and has been one of the best newcomers in England (along with Berbatov), scoring 18 times.

The Chelsea boss admits that he is a big fan of the striker, and that he asked Blackburn about him.

"Benni had a great first season," Mourinho told The Sun. "He quickly settled into the English game.

"He is the kind of striker every coach wants, and I am no exception. I’ve worked with him successfully in the past at FC Porto. I do like Benni.

"I’m not surprised about his achievements. He could score goals anywhere. If he stays injury free, he’ll surpass his achievement of last season."

He then lifted the lid on the approach, revealing that McCarthy was also keen on the move.

"I saw the possibility of us reuniting at Chelsea, but he has a contract," revealed the Portuguese.

"I could tell that he wanted to play for me again, because we had a wonderful time together [at Porto].

"But Blackburn said he was not for sale and you have to respect that."

That hasn't stopped Chelsea before, but with the mega bucks no longer behind him, Mou is trying out the 'softly softly' approach this time around.

Robben Not In Talks With Other Clubs

(Goal.com) - Arjen Robben's father has insisted that the Dutchman is not in talks with other clubs following speculation he was set for a move away from Chelsea this summer.

On the contrary, his father and agent, has insisted that the winger is only in talks with Chelsea about signing a new lengthy contract.

Robben has been heavily linked with a move to Real Madrid, who have not hidden their interest in signing the former PSV Eindhoven player.

However, Hans Robben told SkySports News: "At this moment we are in negotiations with Chelsea and we try to make a new deal.

"And if it doesn't happen, he still has a two-year contract left, so there's no rush and there's no problem.

"You never know in football, but there's a big possibility that he plays for Chelsea next season.

"What I do with negotiations is always just stick to one party. At this moment, it's Chelsea.

"If we don't have a deal, there may be another club, but while he still has two years' contract left I don't see any reason why we should talk to any other club.

"I don't do it (talk to other clubs). I just stick with one club, always one party and no other one."

Del Piero Warns Against Trezeguet, Camoranesi Exit

(Goal.com) - Juventus skipper Alessandro Del Piero believes that the Bianconeri could be in deen trouble if David Trezeguet and Mauro Camoranesi leave the club.

The Turin giants owe much to the duo for their success, as much in Serie A as Serie B, but it is looking increasingly likely that the associations will come to an end now.

Camoranesi has been denied the 3m-a-season contract he desires, while Trezeguet has refused to extend on current terms as he heads into the final year of his deal.

"If Trezeguet and Camoranesi were to leave then we would be in big trouble," warned Del Piero, speaking to Sportweek.

"I have my own idea on how I would plan the next transfer campaign," he continued, speaking of summer strategy.

"If it is true that we have a 50m budget, then I would target two or three players who would allow us to improve our quality, rather than spend the entire amount on one big name."

He also expressed his satisfaction with Gigi Buffon staying on:

"His contract extension was a delicate issue and his decision to stay filled us with enthusiasm."

As for the time-scale for a return to the top, he admitted that five years - as has been mentioned in some sections - was too long: "We can’t afford to take that long."

Of course, he himself will have retired by then!

Drogba Calls On Blues To Show Wild Side

(Goal.com) - Chelsea striker Didier Drogba believes his side must be more adventurous next season.

The Blues picked up the domestic cup double but were criticised for being efficient rather than spectacular, and Drogba wants to see a change.

"It would be good to be more flamboyant and daring," he told The Sun.

"We were too careful, too sensible last season. The team needs to be a bit wilder."

After the disappointment of surrendering the Premiership title to Manchester United, Drogba says manager Jose Mourinho is relishing the challenge next season

"I have had Mourinho on the phone several times since the end of the Premiership and he is all psyched up," he added.

"That is when he is at his best, when he has the feeling the whole world is against him. He is a winner who adores difficulty. It stimulates him."

Drogba was quoted on Tuesday as saying he could leave Chelsea for a fresh challenge in a foreign country.

Miccoli Accepts Return To Juve

(Goal.com) - The small forward played on loan in the past two seasons for Benfica in the Portuguese league, but will now be heading back to Turin.

After three long years away from the Bianconeri (one year with Fiorentina and two with Benfica), Fabrizio Miccoli will be heading back to Juventus as Claudio Ranieri declared that he needs the former international striker.

It will not be an easy return as there were some problems in the past between the player and the club, but the main problems were mostly with the previous directors and coach due to his Fiorentina transfer as his agent, Francesco Caliandro, explained to 'Radio Radio'.

"During the Juventus period, Fabrizio never had problems with the management.

"If there was a problem, it was when Juventus and Fiorentina discussed his co-ownership. And I stop here. The problems were not between Miccoli and the Bianconeri's management."

Therefore the player will be willing to re-join Juventus this summer.

"Last year he did not have any problem in renewing his contract, therefore I can only note down Ranieri's declerations," concluded his agent.

Eto'o Getting “Tired” Of Exit Talk

(Goal.com) - Samuel Eto'o insists he is staying at Barcelona, and he is beginning to get tired with the constant speculation about his future.

“I have already said that I have a contract with Barcelona, and that I want to respect it,” said Eto'o.

“I control my contract. The club cannot throw me out.

“Moreover, I want to continue, and so do the club, so I do not understand why some are interested in saying that I will go away.

“I am already tired of this.”

He admitted that Barcelona had let a great chance to snatch the title slip, but expressed hope that things would turn around again on the final day.

"It might look like Barça thought that they had already won La Liga, and then it was snatched away, but that is not the way it was," he said.

"However, we do hope we can snatch it back again on the final day."

Barcelona need to better Real Madrid's result in order to win the title.

Bradley's Boys Coast To Win

(Soccer365.com) The United States men’s national team put in a solid performance to defeat El Salvador 4-0 on Wednesday evening at Gillette Stadium in Foxborough.

DaMarcus Beasley led the way for the U.S. with a goal in each half. Landon Donovan and Taylor Twellman rounded out the scoring.

With the victory the Red, White and Blue win Group B and earn the right to play the third place finisher from Group A or Group C on Saturday in the quarterfinals.

Bob Bradley’s team wasted no time setting the tone for the game taking the attack to an El Salvador side seemingly hoping to force a 0-0 draw.

Beasley ended those hopes of the visitor’s in the 34th minute. After a U.S. corner kick was weakly headed to the top of the box, Beasley calmly one touched the ball to the far corner.

The U.S continued to dominate possession and chances and doubled the score one minute into stoppage time from the penalty spot. Benny Feilhaber created the chance when his cross was knocked down by a defender’s ill placed hand.

Donovan made El Salvador pay from the spot but in an unusually slow fashion. The LA Galaxy player’s first attempt was saved by a diving goalkeeper Montes but Donovan was able to knock home the rebound. Michael Bradley was however called for being in the box before the kick the goal was waived off.

His second attempt went straight down the pipe but left Montes no chance as he had committed to his left and was forced to watch the ball hit the net.

El Salvador was eager to prove themselves and narrow the margin in the second half and with a commitment to attack created several chances. The U.S. defense was, however, able to thwart every attack.

The attack of El Salvador created more open space in the central portion of the field and Beasley finally took advantage. Beasley won a ball in the defensive third but pushed into attack. After taking the ball over midfield, he found Brian Ching in the center of the field. Ching unselfishly found Twellman at the top of the box and the Rev’s forward took one touch and shot between the wickets of the onrushing Montes.

Beasley finished what he started with his right footed shot in the 89th minute. The tally was set up once again by unselfish play among the U.S. side with Ching finding Clint Dempsey who played to Beasley making a run from the far side.

Soehn Hails D.C. Angel Effort

(Soccer365.com) - With a win over Eastern leaders New York in pocket from the weekend, D.C. United box Tom Soehn made sure to note that his defense shackled Red Bulls sensation Juan Pablo Angel until the result was assured.

Most observers were quick to note Ben Olsen’s hat trick, but the coach also noted that Angel was held off the board until United led 4-1 with five minutes to play.

“He’s a good athlete and was causing a lot of ruckus as far as winning at least the first ball, but he just didn’t have a second guy to (help him),” Soehn told the Washington Examiner. “We did a good job of cleaning those situations up.”

Drogba Warns Chelsea Of Italian/Spanish Ambitions

(Goal.com) - The Premiership's leading goalscorer last season, Chelsea's Didier Drogba has spoken of the appeal of the Primera Liga and Serie A and warned that at some point in the future he may want to play on such a stage.

The Golden Boot winner says he is 'attracted' to the prospect of playing in different countries and may not remain at Chelsea in the long term.

Drogba, from the Ivory Coast, mad his name at Marseille where his performances earned him a £24 million move to the Premiership with Chelsea in 2004.

His Chelsea career began inauspiciously, but once he acclimatised to the English game his impact became rapidly more significant, and last season he was Chelsea's outstanding player - and one of the two best performers in the Premiership as a whole.

He hit 20 League goals and 13 in the cups for a grand total of 33 in 2006-07.

But he has expressed concern that Chelsea's ambitions may not be as grand as his own amid speculation that owner Roman Abramovich has become less willing to spend heavily on bringing in world class stars.

Drogba told The Sun newspaper: "If I think the club lacks ambition, then it is sure I will not stay too long. I'm 29 and I don't have much time to lose."

He added: "I'm at the last big turning point of my career.

"It's time for one final big choice - should I stay or should I go? I am tempted to discover another world and to see what footballing life is like outside England.

"It would be a big disappointment if I never manage to play for teams that I dream of playing for. That would be terribly frustrating.

"Spain and Italy attract me a lot and, although I am a long way from saying farewell to Chelsea, you never know what can happen."

Roma Still Fighting To Keep Chivu - Conti

(Goal.com) - Roma technical head Bruno Conti insists the club continue to fight to keep Christian Chivu.

Reports continue to alternate between a move away from the capital and a contract extension, as the Chivu saga runs, but Roma are giving it everything.

The problem with an extension is their 2.5 million cap on salaries, with Chivu demanding close to 4 million.

"Roma do not want to lose Chivu," said Conti. "Coach Luciano Spalletti will be waiting for him in July for pre-season training.

"If someone else wants him they must speak with the club, because he still has one year on his contract. We haven’t been contacted by anyone.

"We are working to extend his contract, like we have been doing with other players, we don’t want to lose anyone."

Roma do not want to go over 2.5 million, while Inter are said to be ready with a 4 million deal. Barcelona have not given up either.

Dempsey Doesn’t Mind Boo Birds

(Soccer365.com) - U.S. Men’s National Team goal hero Clint Dempsey claims he isn’t bothered when the team faces mass fan opposition in America, such as during Thursday’s 1-0 Gold Cup win over Guatemala.

The away fans, many of whom expatriates that have taken up residence in the States, jeered Landon Donovan and other players throughout the match – a typical occurrence when the ‘Nats host a CONCACAF side.

"It makes us a better team," said Dempsey, who netted midway through the first half on an assist from old New England teammate Taylor Twellman.

"Of course, we'd like to have more support but it is what it is," he shrugged.

Capello "As Charged Up As The Team"

(Goal.com) - Fabio Capello insisted that Real Madrid were up an ready for Saturday evening's game with Real Zaragoza.

The press conference began with talk of Beckham's fitness.

"He only jogged and didn't do any technical exercises." Capello revealed. "He says the sprain hurts a bit but that he will be fine to play tomorrow because he nevertheless feels okay."

"I think he played as well as he is currently playing here," he continued, speaking of the Englishman's showing with england.

"He was very important in those fixtures; his cross for the second goal was extraordinary."

"This game is another 'final' for us, like all the rest," he said, attention switching back to Real Zaragoza.

"It's obviously been hard to prepare for such an important match in only one day, but I am confident of playing well tomorrow.

"The players know they can win and they talk with each other.

"I liked their attitude today because they really looked like a united team. They were more motivated this morning than ever before in days prior to a game.

"They all know tomorrow's fixture is terribly important. I'm as excited as they are."

"I'm happy with the fact that Zaragoza need to win to play in the UEFA Cup next year. They won't be relaxed and the game will be hard for both teams. Psychologically, the game will be equally important for us both."

Toni And Ribery Kick Of Bayern's New Era

(Goal.com) - Bayern Munich officially presented new signings Luca Toni and Franck Ribery at the Allianz Arena on Thursday evening.

Toni was signed two weeks ago, while the deal for Ribery was struck on Tuesday. Both players were presented to the media, as a beaming Uli Hoeneß declared the beginning of a new era.

"We've had a difficult season, so we said we'd strengthen the team with big names," he began, speaking at the presentation.

"That has meant breaking a few rules we've set ourselves over the last 20 years.

"We always said we'd open our wallets if things didn't go well."

However, he was quick to clarify that Bayern will not be doing the same every year.

"This is a one-off investment in the future and won't always be the case," Hoeneß declared, despite admitting, "we succeeded with one transfer after the next.

"The talks we held proved to us that Bayern continues to be seen as an excellent club."

He was congnizant, though, that there was a still a tricky job on Ottmat Hitzfeld's hands: "We're under enormous pressure, and the others will be hunting us down from the start. But we've fulfilled the pre-conditions.

"Now, I'm certainly looking forward to the Bundesliga restart on 11 August."

US Opens Gold Cup With a 1-0 win

Clint Dempsey's first half goal was enough, as a 10-man US side survived to open the 2007 CONCACAF Gold Cup with a win against Guatemala.

Dempsey scored in the 26th minute on an easy tap in set up by a pass across the front of the goal by Taylor Twellman. The Americans had several other chances in the first half, but could not convert.

The tables turned in the second half, as Guatemala was able to apply consistent pressure to the US defense. Striker Carlos Ruiz frustrated the American defenders and ultimately American Oguchi Onyewu was sent off after two yellow cards.

However, the US team and goalkeeper Tim Howard were able to keep the clean sheet and get the win.

El Salvador beat Trinidad & Tobago 2-1 in Group B's other match. The group returns to play on Saturday, with US facing T&T and El Salvador vs. Guatemala.

Johnson: Fun Leads To Goals

(Soccer365.com) - Kansas City striker Eddie Johnson claims that the secret to his torrid start to the season is a mixture of enjoyment and confidence that he expects to utilize to great effect during the U.S. National Team Gold Cup odyssey.

The 2006 scuffer has opened the 2007 MLS campaign with nine goals in nine games, including back-to-back hat tricks; he had a similar hot start to his USMNT career, and is eager to bust the international slump.

“I’m enjoying the game again,” Johnson told the Kansas City Star. “And I know when I’m enjoying the game and I get my chances at the international level, I’m going to make the most of it.”

“Six months ago or a year ago, I was second-guessing myself a lot,” he added. “Now my confidence is back - I’m looking forward to the challenge.”

Werder Bremen Demand Podolski For Klose

(Goal.com) - Werder Bremen have ruffled a few feathers in Bavaria by asking for Lukas Podolski in exchange for Miroslav Klose.

With all the pieces falling into place in the great rebuilding project at Bayern, one piece still seems to be eluding them - Klose.

Karl-Heinz Rummenigge, Uli Hoeneß, and Ottmar Hitzfeld have all stated their desire to have Klose at Bayern this season itself, rather than have to wait until his contract at Werder expires in 2008.

Klose himself has "told them plainly that he wants to join Bayern," reported Hoeneß.

After Klose made his feelings clear, Bayern made their move, and Hoeneß has confirmed that there is an offer for Werder to consider: "Bremen received a firm offer from us 10 days ago. That is fair enough."

Bayern are reported to have offered €10 million. However Bremen consider this offer too low, and have up brought the possibility of a player exchange with Lukas Podolski in the reckoning.

Bayern have immediately refused the demand. "Podolski will never be given away," quipped Hoeneß who also described talk of a loan move to Bochum for Podolski as an 'April Fools trick'.

It appears the discussions between Werder Bremen and Bayern Munich have reached a temporary standstill as a result. However, they may be getting back into gear now, given a recent approach from Lyon.

Reyna Salutes Angel ‘Quality’

(Soccer365.com) - New York midfield general Claudio Reyna says the team knew right away that strike catch Juan Pablo Angel would take MLS by storm, as evidenced by a quick fire Wednesday night double that topped Toronto FC.

The hosts led on a Jeff Cunningham slump buster, but the Aston Villa transplant struck twice in three mid-second half to flip the result.

Angel now has bagged seven goals and two assists in his first six matches with the Red Bulls.

"His quality is here to see," Reyna told MLSNet. "As soon as we signed him, I knew he would score loads of goals in this league."

"He's a great professional, a great team player and he cares more about winning than his two goals."

Yaya Touré Tempted By FC Barcelona

(Goal.com) - Monaco's Yaya Touré is keen on a move to FC Barcelona, despite interested from several other clubs in Italy, France and England.

The 24-year-old has, who is the younger brother of Arsenal's Kolo Touré, has been linked with a number of sides, but he has his heart set on one in particular.

News that he is on Barça's summer shopping list has been welcomed by the former Olympiakos player, his advisor explained.

"He would be happy to sign for Barcelona," Dmitri Seluk stated.

"Inter, Lyon, Roma, Everton and Arsenal have all asked about him. I think that everyone is interested now.

"I think his price at the moment would be about €15m."

Yaya Touré's strength and power in midfield could see him as the ideal player to step into the holding position behind Xavi and Deco in the Barça midfield.

The Blaugrana have made it clear that they are looking to strengthen in that area, but are waiting to make any formal approaches for players until after the end of the Spanish season.

Owen's Pride At Passing Landmark

(Soccer365.com) - Michael Owen has revealed his pride at breaking his hero Gary Lineker's record to become England's highest goalscorer in competitive matches.

Owen moved one clear of Lineker with his 23rd goal for his country in either World Cup or European Championship matches by netting against Estonia on Wednesday night.

It increased Owen's tally for England to 37 in 82 internationals although the Newcastle striker is still 11 behind Lineker in the overall scoring charts and 12 adrift of record goalscorer Sir Bobby Charlton.

Owen said: "It is always nice to score goals and to break that record of Gary Lineker is fantastic. He was an England great and he was my idol when I was a kid.

"I was an Everton supporter and a Gary Lineker fan when he played for the club so it was lovely to beat him. It was nice to score and good we got the three points under our belts."

Owen admits he wished the season was not ending after gradually building up his fitness following his lengthy lay-off with knee ligament damage.

He said: "In my comeback game for the reserves at Newcastle, I scored after five minutes and thought it was going to be the same for the first team and international level.

"Obviously I've had to wait a while but it was well worth the wait. We can have a nice summer now. I'd like the season to carry on. Fitness-wise I feel great.

"I was running faster the more the game went on in Estonia. I've had a great rehab. I'd love the season to continue.

"I can understand if people had question marks over me after being out so long but, when you know you've had a good rehab and have passed every question mark placed over me, you feel confident.

"I knew I was fit and raring to go from my first game a few weeks back."

Owen admitted that England are unlikely to be able to afford any more slip-ups in their qualifying group if they are to reach the 2008 Euro finals in Austria and Switzerland.

Draws with Macedonia at Old Trafford and Israel in Tel Aviv may yet prove costly for Steve McClaren's side.

Owen said: "We can only concentrate on ourselves. If we win all our games, we are going to qualify and there are going to be big games, Russia home and away and Croatia at home.

"We definitely need to win our big home games and then we can't afford any more slip-ups. We can maybe afford one more but we don't really want to do that."

Owen feels England can be satisfied with the way they have ended the campaign and he paid tribute to the contribution of David Beckham in setting up his goal and another for Peter Crouch against Estonia.

He said: "We came out and played reasonably well in the first half. It is always like that in international football, especially when they have got a lot of energy but we kept the ball well and dominated in the second half.

"David Beckham did well again and his quality is undoubted. He is the best crosser in the world and has great vision and is a great passer.

"It was a cracking ball into the box for my goal and he set another one up as well."

Work Permit Worries For United Signing Anderson

(Goal.com) - The transfer of Anderson to Manchester United for £17 million from Porto has hit a temporary snag, according to reports, with the UK Home Office set to reject the Brazilian's application for a work permit.

Current regulations dictate that non-EU players must have played at least 75 per cent of their country's games during the last two years. Although Anderson has been included in Brazil's squad for this summer's Copa America, he has yet to play a full international, which could delay his move from Portugal.

The Sun reports that United intend to appeal the decision not to grant a work permit, and are already putting together a legal team for this purpose.

United's Korean midfielder, Park Ji-Sung, experienced a similar snag when he moved to Old Trafford from PSV Eindhoven in 2005.

On that occasion, the then PSV coach Guus Hiddink argued on Park's behalf that the player would improve the quality of the Premiership.

Meanwhile, United's other import from Portuguese football, Nani - who successfully completed a medical for the club on Wednesday - has talked of his excitement at joining the newly-crowned Premiership champions.

Nani, who has joined United for £14 million from Sporting Clube de Lisbon, said:

"The English championship is completely different to ours but it is always good to play for a great club.

"I am very anxious because I want to know everything about Manchester United and how big a club it actually is.

"I know that I will always have to give my best every day, every game."

Beasley Stumps For Nguyen Skill

(Soccer365.com) - U.S. international DaMarcus Beasley believes PSV Eindhoven teammate Lee Nguyen’s first experience in a National Team camp proved that the young attacker is one to watch for the future.

The Texas native made his USMNT debut in the weekend win over China.

"He's different," Beasley told Soccernet of his fellow American Abroad. "He can play a lot of different positions."

"He can play behind the strikers, he can play up the right, he can play winger - he's versatile."

"He's good technically," continued the speedster’s scouting report. "He knows the game, he's smart and he's feisty."

Nguyen failed to make a first team appearance inder new coach Ronald Koeman, but Beasley feels his breakout is only a matter of time.

"PSV is a pretty big team, with guys like (Philip) Cocu and Alex," he reasoned. "I think he was a little timid at first."

"(Now), he's more confident in his ability and what he can do."

Bayern Munich Seal 25 Million Ribery Deal

(Goal.com) - Olympique Marseille have officially confirmed that Franck Ribery will be plying his trade for Bayern Munich next season.

Marseille president Pape Diouf has confirmed the transfer of Frank Ribery to Bayern Munich in a 25 million euro deal.

Believe it or not, the fee is a new Bundesliga record. He will earn 4 million euros per year.

"The transaction will be concluded on Wednesday and Ribery will move to Munich in order to pass the medical and sign his contract on Thursday," Diouf told L'Equipe.

He also spoke about the possibility of Barcelona's Ludovic Giuly joining Marseille as a replacement.
"Giuly to replace Ribery? For the moment it is just a wish from the Barcelona player," he said.

"We have to know under what conditions the deal could be struck.

"I am clarifying today, that we won't waste too much money on salaries. We won't make the same errors as we did after Drogba's transfer."

Inter Or Nothing - Figo

(Goal.com) - The English press had reported the Portughese legend was thinking about playing in the Premiership.

Luis Figo has rejected claims he could join Tottenham this summer, adding that if he continues to play professional footie it will only be for his current club.

“Im going to take a decision soon. I don’t have a lot of time to choose as the new season is close. If I will continue in Europe it will only be for one club: Inter," he told reporters today.

"I don't have much time to decide and I know I have to do it quickly because the new season is around the corner.

"But I want to point out that I still haven't decided. What point would there be in hiding my decision if I had already made it?

"I will let everybody know when everything has been decided."

"If I will go and play in another continent, at the right moment I’ll know. I repeat, there are no possibilities that I can join an English or Portuguese club,” he added.

In December Figo had agreed to join Saudi Arabian outfit Al-Ittihad this summer, however the former Real Madrid winger scappaed the deal last week for an apparent breach of contract terms.

Another option currently open for Figo is a move to the MLS, where he would play together with his former teammate David Beckham, set to debut with LA Galaxy in August.

Milan Will Bid For Eto'o

(Soccer365.com) - AC Milan have confirmed they'll bid for Barcelona striker Samuel Eto'o this summer.

The European champions are hoping to strengthen their ageing squad, and have been linked for months with a move for Barca playmaker Ronaldinho.

But Rossoneri chief Adriano Galliani confirmed on Tuesday that it's another Nou Camp ace in Eto'o that they're hoping to land.

He told Gazzetta Dello Sport: "We will ask Barca about Eto'o but we don't know whether he's for sale. We'll look to open negotiations once the Spanish season is over on June 17.

"He's a player that appeals to both myself and our coach Carlo Ancelotti."

Milan have already confirmed that Andriy Shevchenko won't be returning to the San Siro this summer.

And with that in mind it appears that Eto'o is now their number one target to beef up their attack. He could form a mouthwatering strike partnership with Brazilian ace Ronaldo.

The news that Milan want the Cameroon hitman could also scupper Liverpool's hopes of signing him.

Rafa Benitez reportedly has Eto'o as one of his top transfer targets.

One player who appears to be on the way out of Milan meanwhile is Italy striker Alberto Gilardino.

Galliani confirmed that the club would listen to offers of 24 million Euros (around £17million) for the former Parma star.

He's been linked with a move to Juventus, while there have been reports in Italy of a potentially blockbusting swap deal for Adriano from city rivals Inter.

Milan are also hoping to sign another player currently plying his trade in La Liga - Real Madrid's Brazilian midfielder Emerson.

Confirmed: Fenerbahce Sign Roberto Carlos

(Goal.com) - Fenerbahce have confirmed that they have signed Roberto Carlos from Real Madrid.

According to the official website, Carlos' agent Dino Pasalic arrived in Turkey on Tuesday night, and met with Murat Ozaydinli, one of the club vice presidents, to finalize the details.

Ozaydinli has confirmed that the deal is now official, and the player will arrive in Turkey to complete his medical and sign the contract in the coming days.

"We signed a player who perfectly fits with Fenerbahce's traditions," he told the club's official website.

"Everybody must be grateful to our president Aziz Yildirim. In the past, we could not mention even the names of ordinary players.

"But today, we can even sign such legendary players without having any problems.

"For the last two years, Fenerbahce are being talked upon on all corners of the world and this was our main target.

"Our meeting about Roberto Carlos' transfer took only 15-20 minutes. We told them our principles and it was all over.

"Dino [Palasic] came to Turkey late at night, we had a meal together and the deal was sealed. This is about the power of Fenerbahce, this is about the synergy we created here at Fenerbahce."

The news will not come as a surprise, as it was a deal said to be in the pipeline, though there was also the faintest of chances that he could have spent another year at the Bernabeu.

He leaves Madrid after eleven long seasons, during which he has won three Champions League trophies (98, 00, 02) and three La Liga titles (97, 01, 03). Interestingly, his first and last seasons have both seen him play under Fabio Capello.

Kaka Dreams Of Sheva Return

(Soccer365.com) - Kaka would love to see Andriy Shevchenko return to AC Milan this summer.

Shevchenko endured a difficult season in the Premiership after joining Chelsea for a fee of around £30million.

He says he'll be a success in England if given the time, but Kaka for one would love to see him back in a Rossoneri shirt next term.

Fresh from that Champions League final success over Liverpool, he told Gazzetta Dello Sport: "I really hope Shevchenko comes back. I speak to him often, but unfortunately there are rules in football so you can't just turn around and leave.

"I am sure he would already be here if the decision was only up to him, but it seems there might be some problems."

Kaka meanwhile has committed his future to Milan, saying he'll honour the contract he signed through to 2011.

That will put paid for the moment to speculation linking him with a blockbusting switch to Spanish giants Real Madrid.

He said: "I have spoken to Carlo Ancelotti and told him 'we have both contracts until 2011 to win everything with Milan. We have decided our future."

Milan have also been linked with a swoop for Brazilian midfielder Emerson from Real Madrid.

And Kaka says he would be a great signing for the European champions, saying: "He's tough, he defends, he marks, and he stops opposing midfielders playing. He was a colossus in midfield for Juventus."

But one player Kaka doesn't expect to see arriving at the San Siro is Ronaldinho. He said: "I expect Ronaldinho to stay at Barcelona."

Berbatov Expresses United Admiration, Hails Ronaldo

(Goal.com) - Tottenham striker Dimitar Berbatov has spoken of his admiration for Manchester United's array of stars.

The Bulgarian has been linked with the Red Devils in the near past, but a move seems to be unlikely now, with United unlikely to make more big money signings this summer.

Berbatov, while insisting he is happy with the Spurs, has admitted that Ferguson's boys are something special

"I am a happy man in Tottenham," he told Bulgarian daily Standart.

"The club gives me everything I need to feel nice with them, and I actually do.

"As for United, of course I like Sir Alex's team.

"Their style is attacking and pleasant to watch, and it coincides with my own style of playing football.

"Giggs, Scholes and Rooney are fantastic players, and Cristiano Ronaldo on the right side is a magician with the ball; he plays football from another planet.

"Of course, it would be a pleasure for me to play with these guys; they simply know how to have fun on the pitch."

Bocanegra Sees Big Deuce Impact

(Soccer365.com) - Fulham defender Carlos Bocanegra is predicting that club and country teammate Clint Dempsey will have an increased role when the new Premiership campaign rolls around.

The two are currently preparing for Gold Cup duty, but will return to West London for preseason after completing their U.S. National team commitments.

“He came in and was working really hard the whole time,” Bocanegra said of Dempsey’s Craven Cottage arrival to L.A. Soccer News. “His attitude was great.”

“He wasn't playing and obviously it's frustrating coming from MLS where he is a superstar and going over there and not playing very much.”

“I think it's kind of a humbling experience, but you kind of have to go through the process to see how it is,” continued the Californian. “He kept his head up and kept working hard in training and it ended up paying off for him with that huge goal against Liverpool.”

“When he got a shot, he did well and he will be playing more and more next year.”

Ranieri - Juve Too Tempting

(Soccer365.com) - Claudio Ranieri admitted the Juventus job was too tempting to turn down after being unveiled as Didier Deschamps' successor.

It had been reported Juve had initially targeted their former coach Marcello Lippi, while former striker Gianluca Vialli was also believed to be in the frame.

But the former Chelsea manager, who resigned as Parma coach after saving them from Serie A relegation and had been strongly linked with Manchester City, has signed a three-year contract to coach the Bianconeri.

Ranieri said: "This is a beautiful, difficult and electrifying challenge.

"It is a great opportunity for me and there's a lot of work to do in order to recover Juve's standing."

He continued: "I have the possibility to return Juve to where they belong and it is an electrifying challenge which I don't fear.

"It is an ambitious project but I am certain that we will do well and the fans should stay calm. We will make them proud of the team in Italy and then in Europe."

The Turin giants were demoted prior to last season to Serie B for the first time in the club's history following a match-fixing scandal, and the pressure will be on the 55-year-old to restore them to the top of Serie A.

The Juventus hierarchy are certain they have appointed the right man to lead the club on their return to Serie A.

An earlier statement on www.juventus.com read: "Claudio Ranieri have signed a contract which will see him tied to the club from July 1, 2007 to June 30, 2010.

"For Juventus, this is the best possible choice fully in line with the company's objectives and tradition.

"Ranieri is a man of great experience and international vision. He is able to carry out the sporting project approved by the administrative council."

Juve last week clinched the Serie B title with a 2-0 win over Mantova to ensure an immediate return to the top flight.

Deschamps and the club decided to "amicably separate" just hours after the triumph, which came courtesy of goals from David Trezeguet and Pavel Nedved.

Juve promoted assistant coach Giancarlo Corradini to lead the first team until the end of the season.

Ranieri started his managerial career with Pozzuoli-based Campania in 1987 before making his name with Cagliari by getting the club promoted to the top flight.

After further spells in his homeland with Napoli and Fiorentina, the Rome-born tactician tried his luck in Spain and enjoyed a two-year stint at the Valencia helm during which time he won the 1997 Copa del Rey and guided the club into the Champions League.

A brief period at Atletico Madrid followed before Ranieri headed to England to join Chelsea in 2000.

Heavily backed in the transfer market at Stamford Bridge, particularly after the 2003 arrival of billionaire owner Roman Abramovich, 'Tinkerman' Ranieri ultimately failed to deliver on the pitch and was replaced by Jose Mourinho in May 2004.

Ranieri was out of work for just over a week before returning to Valencia, although his three-year contract with Los Che proved insignificant when he was sacked the following February with the club in sixth spot and out of the Champions League.

He took up the reins at Parma in February 2007 after two years out of work, and successfully helped the club retain their top-flight status before quitting and then taking up the Juve post.

I Will Listen To Offers - David Villa

(Goal.com) - The Valencia hit man has added fuel to the fire surrounding his future, suggesting that he might be willing to listen to offers after the end of the Spanish season.

The Valencia man has six more years on his contract, and a release clause of 150 million euros, but that has not stopped speculation over his future.

He has been heavily linked with Chelsea over the last two months, and Barcelona and Real Madrid have also been mentioned in connection with him over the last few weeks.

Valencia have issued a strict hands-off warning, but the Spanish international has shown a willingness to look at offers before confirming his future.

"I know that I am being spoken of outside Spain, and that is always significant for a football player," he told Don Balón.

"If an offer arrived from abroad, then I would take a moment to stop and think about whether or not it interested me."

"I feel happy with Valencia, and have not given my future a thought," he insisted. "However, is an offer were to be tabled, I would sit down and speak."

Juventus and Chelsea are the two foreign clubs linked with him.

Bradley Compliments Central Duo

(Soccer365.com) - U.S. coach Bob Bradley has hinted he is beginning to prefer that young Americans Abroad Michael Bradley and Benny Feilhaber in the middle of the park after the duo again showed the right stuff in Saturday’s win over China.

The boss’ son – expected to inherit Paul Bosvelt’s place at Heerenveen – solidified matters after a shaky start with his cool play, while the flashier Hamburg prospect notched his first international goal and assist in the 4-1 victory.

“They complement each other,” papa Bradley told USSoccer.com.

“I felt our ability to be on top of loose balls, connect a little faster, and moved a little bit better (after a mid-game tactical switch to pair the players in central midfield.”

Ranieri Takes Over The Old Lady

(Soccer365.com) - Juventus have confirmed Claudio Ranieri as their new coach and handed the former Chelsea and Valencia boss a three-year contract.

Former Chelsea manager Ranieri left his role at Parma last week after leading the club to Serie A safety and had been widely tipped to join Manchester City.

However, Juventus have beaten City to the punch and installed Ranieri as the successor to Didier Deschamps, who left the Turin-based club after leading them back to Serie A at the first attempt.

Juve last week clinched the Serie B title with a 2-0 win over Mantova to ensure an immediate return to the top flight just a year after they were relegated for match-fixing.

Deschamps and the club decided to "amicably separate" just hours after the triumph, which came courtesy of goals from David Trezeguet and Pavel Nedved.

Juve promoted assistant coach Giancarlo Corradini to lead the first team until the end of the season.

Marcello Lippi was reportedly a front-runner for the Bianconeri hot-seat but the club turned to 'Tinkerman' Ranieri after failing in attempts to lure the Italian World Cup winning-coach out of retirement.

Ranieri will be presented to the media later on Monday but a statement on the Juve website outlined their delight at having snared the 55-year-old.

It read: "Claudio Ranieri has signed a contract which will see him tied to the club from July 1, 2007 to June 30, 2010.

"For Juventus, this is the best possible choice to achieve the aims set out by the club's tradition.

"Ranieri is a man of great experience and international vision. He is able to carry out the sporting project approved by the administrative council."

The Rome-born tactician started his managerial career with Pozzuoli-based Campania in 1987 before making his name with Cagliari by getting the club promoted to the top flight.

Dunga Wants Ronnie To Train More

(Soccer365.com) - Brazil coach Dunga claims superstar attacker Ronaldinho will return to the status of world’s best player after he dedicates himself on the practice pitch.

The Barcelona man appeared a bit tired during a weekend friendly draw in England.

"Ronaldinho lacks pace at present," admitted Dunga. "He lacks that initial burst of speed that allows him to get away from his rivals."

"He has to train more, a Ronaldinho at peak fitness is impossible to stop as seen last year - technically he is better than the rest."

Shevchenko Insists On Chelsea Stay

(Goal.com) - Andriy Shechenko has insisted that he has no desire to leave Chelsea after his disappointing first season at Stamford Bridge.

The Ukrainian striker has been linked with his former club AC Milan's arch-rivals Inter this weekend, but he is determined to prove his quality in the Premiership.

He told The Sun: "I'm happy in London. Give me time and next season you will see the real Shevchenko.

"I have needed some time to acclimatise to England but, given the chance, I can show the supporters the real me.

"I knew it would be difficult to adapt to Chelsea.

"It's a new club, a new life and it was a difficult season.

"But I just wish people would give me the time to acclimatise and to get used to it all - then you will see."

With Mourinho having a tighter budget this time around, he is unlikely to allow one of his key players to leave.

Nery Delighted With Mexico Debut

(Soccer365.com) - Mexico debutant Nery Castillo was on cloud nine after finally making his international debut with an assist in their 4-0 friendly rout of Iran this weekend.

The Olympiakos forward unleashed an untamable shot for Jared Borgetti to pounce on the rebound – El Tri later added goals by Jaime Lozano, Francisco Fonseca and Gerardo Torrado.

"I'm very happy for the debut, I want to thank everybody for the support," said the player, who had seen injury and paperwork troubles delay his first cap.

"We did what we have to - we're headed in the right direction."

Mexico will now face Paraguay on Tuesday before starting Gold Cup play against Cuba on Friday.

Ribery On Verge Of Bayern Move

(Goal.com) - Franck Ribery's move to Bayern Munich is as good as done.

Ribery had earlier been reluctant to move to Bayern, but the lack of another concrete offer, and Bayern's massive push for him, seems to have done the business.

He is now said to be convinced that a being part of a promising project is worth a season spent playing in the Uefa Cup.

The softening of stand was his comment yesterday, suggesting: "Champions League is not a problem. Bayern are a big club just like Real Madrid."

The French international winger is now set for a £16 million (23 million euro) move to the Allianz Arena, after Bayern upped their initial offer to meet Marseille's demands.

"We are not far from a total agreement," said Bayern president Karl-Heinz Rummenigge. "The financial agreement has been reached with Marseille, and not much is missing."

It is believed that personal terms with the player are also close to being agreed. Ribery will then travel to Munich, after France's international commitments, to complete his medical and sign a five year contract.

Inzaghi Revelling In Recent Success

(Soccer365.com) - Filippo Inzaghi has enjoyed some good times during his career but at no time has he felt as good as he does now after leading AC Milan to Champions League glory and scoring twice for Italy on Saturday.

The 33-year-old's two strikes against Liverpool lifted Milan to a 2-1 victory in Athens less than two weeks ago, and his pair of goals at the Faroe Islands earned the Azzurri a triumph by the same scoreline.

"Athens has given me an incredible charge," Inzaghi said. "This is the most beautiful moment of my career."

The result has left Italy two points behind Group B leaders France.

"I knew it wasn't going to be an easy game, but the important thing was to take home the victory," Inzaghi said.

"Even if we had scored seven goals, we still would have only taken three points home."

Italy coach Roberto Donadoni has had the difficult task of replacing Marcello Lippi, who was at the helm during last year's World Cup success in Germany.

The narrow margin of Saturday's win has not opened the floodgates of praise for him or his players in the Italian media.

"We had several opportunities to score," Donadoni said. "Had we won the game 4-1, no one would be criticising us."

Now the Italians will turn their attention to Lithuania, whom they face in Kaunas on Wednesday.

Beckham Can Win Us The League - Robinho

(Goal.com) - Robinho has showered praise on club teammate David Beckham following Brazil's friendly against England at Wembley. However, he also reiterated certain unwelcome sentiments from a few months ago.

"I feel better playing with Brazil than with Real Madrid," Robinho told media sources in Dortmund, where Brazil will play Turkey on Tuesday night.

"I get more freedom here."

He had spoken along similar lines earlier in the season, when he was not getting enough playing time under Capello.

The Brazilian then praised club teammate David Beckham for his display at Wembley, and insisted that his form would be the key to Madrid winning the league.

"He is in an excellent moment of form and was the best player from his team," he said.

"At Real Madrid, he has been playing at this level, so it did not surprise me as much.

"He is a very important piece in our winning the league."

Donovan Mulling Bradley Wishes

(Soccer365.com) - U.S. star Landon Donovan claims he has been designated for use in both tourneys this summer by National Team boss Bob Bradley, but hinted that he could still beg out of Copa America in order to help lift the struggling L.A. Galaxy.

The coach is expected to call on as many as a dozen ‘Nats for double duty - including next week’s CONCACAF Gold Cup.

“He definitely wants me to go to both,” Donovan told L.A. Soccer News. “He made that very clear.”

“I told (coach Bradley) how I feel and I told him I’d give it a little bit of thought,” he stated. “By the end of this week, I want to come up with a decision that we’re both fine with and just get it over so I’m not worrying about Gold Cup, so we know what’s going on and we can get on with it.”

Fit Again Owen's Going For Goals

(Soccer365.com) - Michael Owen has no doubt he is the man to fire England into Euro 2008.

Owen will make his first international appearance for almost 12 months when he leads England's attack in the eagerly-awaited friendly with Brazil at Wembley.

Fitness permitting, the 27-year-old will retain his place for the crucial Euro 2008 in Estonia five days later when it is widely believed a failure to win will cost Steve McClaren his job.

Owen does not see the situation in such black and white terms. But, as the fourth-highest goalscorer in England history, the Newcastle forward recognises his responsibilities.

And, not only is he happy to accept them, past experience suggests he will thrive on them.

"I don't think I can score against Brazil and Estonia, I know I can," he said.

"Due to my past experiences, I have a bigger base of self-belief than most.

"With most players, it is around 50% self-belief and 50% confidence. With me, the ratio is more like 80-20.

"Even if I am not playing too well, I still feel I can contribute. Even if I have not had a kick, I still feel I can score with my first opportunity. I have never lost that feeling throughout my career."

Owen's phenomenal scoring return certainly provides some re-assurance for a player whose last goal in England colours came in the remarkable friendly win over Argentina 18 months ago.

Since then, the Newcastle striker has had to battle back from a broken foot which threatened his participation at the World Cup and the cruciate ligament injury which wrecked his tournament once he got to Germany.

His presence has been badly missed during a European Championship qualifying campaign in which - two meetings with the part-timers of Andorra aside - England have managed just one goal in four games.

McClaren is acutely aware the record must improve if England are to stand any chance of reaching next summer's finals in Austria and Switzerland, which is why he had no hesitation in recalling Owen, even though the former Liverpool man is some way short of full fitness.

Likely to find himself on his own up front against Brazil and partnered by Alan Smith in Tallinn, Owen is not about to shirk the responsibility.

"The hardest thing to do in football is score," he said.

"I don't find that responsibility hard to handle. I have grown up with it and I would actually have it no other way.

"Knowing people expect me to score makes me feel a couple of inches taller. I love high stakes games, the more pressure the better as far as I am concerned."

With David Beckham back in the fold as well, it is very much like old times for England.

The only major difference is that the former Real Madrid team-mates are now mere foot soldiers under John Terry rather than captain and vice-captain as they were before.

Owen insisted he has no problem with that, accepting his injury meant it would have been meaningless for McClaren to discover his views anyway.

Instead of helping McClaren through the difficult early days of his reign, Owen has been nothing more than a frustrated bystander as England's depressing qualifying campaign unfolded, culminating in the fearful abuse McClaren suffered at the hands of his own fans in Barcelona during a miserable goalless first-half against Andorra.

"I felt for Steve and the players that night," said Owen.

"It was almost an accumulation of things. A lot of people went into the game frustrated because we had not played too well in the games leading up to that.

"Everyone was poised really to let their frustrations go and with things not going as planned on the night, tempers started to fray."

The experience could certainly be viewed as a good one to miss.

Owen takes the alternative opinion, claiming he was desperate to be involved because he felt he could have made a difference.

His theory will be put to the test against the most glamorous opposition possible on Friday in a match which represents England's first game at their magnificent new home.

No-one could have envisaged a meeting with Brazil would become a mere sideshow in comparison with Wednesday's trip to Estonia.

Having dropped points against Macedonia, Croatia and Israel already, and with an autumn double-header with Russia still to come, England have little margin for error already. Against a side without a goal or a point in Group E so far, a further slip-up is unthinkable.

"It has not quite happened for us in a couple of games so far but we are still in a position where we can qualify," said Owen.

"We have got plenty of home games to come and if we can in Estonia things will look a lot rosier for us."

Fire Expect Big Blanco Boo$t

(Soccer365.com) - Chicago Fire general manager Steve Guppy reports that the club’s financial outlook has already taken a turn for the better, even before star signing Cuauhtemoc Blanco has had the chance to suit up.

The famed Mexico attacker has concluded his contract with Club América, and will join his new teammates after a short respite.

“The tone of our conversations with corporate America since (Blanco) signed has changed significantly,” Guppy told Chicago Business. “I don’t think I’m overstating it when I say that the Chicago Fire is becoming one of the most important sports brands for the Hispanic community.”

“Blanco’s impact will be seen across every aspect of this business,” he declared. “There will be an increase in sponsorship revenue, increase in parking revenue, increase in concession revenue and increase in merchandise - we’ll see a significant impact.”

Sissoko Set For £8.5m Juventus Move

(Goal.com) - Reports in Italy suggest that Juventus are set to beat Barcelona to the Liverpool midfielder.

The Mali international is currently Rafa Benitez's fourth choice after Mascherano, Xabi Alonso and Gerrard, and had declared his displeasure after the Champions League final.

"I'm 22, and I know I am still a young player, but now I need to progress," he had said.

"Playing every game is important to me, so I need to know my situation. I need to play football."

Rafa Benitez is said to be open to letting him leave should an important offer come in, as he believes that Mascherano is the way forward.

Sossoko has been very strongly linked to Barcelona over the last ten days or so, but Juventus have stepped up their chase as they look to secure a defensive midfielder.

The Turin giants missed out of Torsten Frings after he decided to stay on at Werder, and are keen to start making some key signings for next season.

Reports in Italy now suggest that an agreement has already been reached with the player, and that Liverpool are also willing to do business over an offer in the region on 13 million euros.

Lehmann: I'm Still Number One

(Soccer365.com) - Germany goalkeeper Jens Lehmann has laid down the gauntlet to his rivals for the position by saying they will have to fight him for his place.

The Arsenal custodian will keep goal for Germany in their upcoming Euro 2008 qualifiers against San Marino and Slovakia and is confident of remaining the number one choice in the future.

The 37-year-old told German newspaper Bild: "It was hard enough (becoming number one) so why should I make it easier for anybody else?

"I will play until the time comes when sombody is better than me. I would happily be knocked off my perch."

Stuttgart'sTimo Hildebrand is widely regarded as the future number one goalkeeper, but Lehmann will not even let him face group whipping boys San Marino at the weekend.

"Why should I let him have the game?" he said. "Even against San Marino I can feel the adrenaline is pumping."

And his position at Arsenal does not worry him either after recently signing a contract extension.

"When I am phyiscally fit and have nothing distracting me mentally, then nobody can match me for experience," he added.

United In Surprise Anelka Link

(Goal.com) - Free spending Manchester United have been linked with an unlikely move for much-travelled Bolton Wanderers forward Nicola Anelka.

After signing Owen Hargreaves, Anderson and Nani this week it seems the Premiership champions have not finished yet and are looking to bulster their attacking options with the Frenchman, who has previously played in the Premeirship for Manchester City, Liverpool and Arsenal.

The Daily Mirror claims that Sir Alex Ferguson is looking at adding The Frenchman to his talented squad for £8m, which is what Bolton paid Fenerbahce for the player last summer.

After taking a while to settle he scored 13 goals for the Trotters and impressed, but following the departure of Sam Allardyce he may now see his future away from the Reebok Stadium.

However, it seems he would be far from certain of landing a first team place at Old Trafford.

During a busy career Anelka has also played for Real Madrid and Paris St Germain, but if reports are true he could be set for his eighth different club and his fifth in England.

Ancelotti Agrees To A New Milan Deal

(Soccer365.com) - Carlo Ancelotti has agreed a new deal to coach AC Milan until 2010.

The 47-year-old's contract was due to run out at the end of next season, but it has now been extended for another three years.

Ancelotti led the club to their seventh European Cup with a 2-1 win over Liverpool in Athens last week.

He had been hinting at an extension of his contract in the aftermath of their Champions League win.

And the coach is delighted at being given the chance to continue his love affair with the club for whom he also played for five years.

"I am very pleased to have reached this agreement and I feel happy to continue here," he told the club's official website.

"We have won the Champions League because in November the board have given me their confidence, while others talked about other coaches. Adriano Galliani is a great director."

Kaka Enjoying English Experience

(Goal.com) - Brazilian sensation Kaka has spoken of his feelings of playing England at the new Wembley Stadium ahead of the friendly on Friday night.

The AC Milan star revealed his joy of playing English sides due to the passion of the supporters, although the recent experience of beating Manchester United and Liverpool on route to winning the Champions League has probably also helped.

"Yes, I like it," Kaka told theFA.com regarding playing in England. "And I enjoyed the games because we won them, but also because the atmosphere in England is very nice. We played against Manchester and then in the Final we played against Liverpool, and the supporters heart is there to see - it is always nice to play against English teams.

"It will be very nice, especially for the English players to play in such a game, but also for us playing against England here is a good game."

He added: "For me it is a good emotion, because I didn't get to play at the old Wembley and now I have this opportunity to play in the new one.

"I remember the last game between England and Brazil, it was 1-1, and I have some great memories of the oldest stage."
