Crespo Breaks Maradona’s Record

(Goal.com) - Argentine striker Hernan Crespo reached 35 goals with the national team after his goal against Colombia on Tuesday, and beat Diego Maradona’s previous record of 34 goals.

Crespo, scored Argentina’s first goal of the match when he drilled in a penalty, but pulled a muscle in his leg during the process and could be out of action for the rest of the tournament.

Still, it was his third strike of the Copa America, after his first two goals against the United States last week, and the player has gone on to surpass Diego Maradona, Argentina’s greatest footballer of all time.

Maradona, who played for his national team between 1977 and 1994 scored 34 times, with the last one being against Greece in the group stage of USA ’94 at the Foxboro Stadium in Boston.

Crespo, who was recently crowned Italian champions with Inter Milan, is still 21 goals away of breaking the all-time record held by Gabriel Bastistuta, with 56 goals.

After their convincing 4-2 victory over Colombia on Tuesday the Argentines booked their spot in the next round, but first will have to complete the group phase of matches with a clash against group leaders Paraguay later on in the week.

The Argentine medical staff has affirmed that Crespo’s condition could put an end to his Copa America, although they will undertake further tests in the next few days.

No matter what anybody says, Crespo is a natural goal poacher. I think he and Ruud are the best in the world when it comes to putting the ball in the net

Your right Red. I also think that Dutch kid that plays for Ajax & the Dutch national side is a real shark around goal as well.

He broke a record and pulled a muscle. He's one of the best, even still.

I like Crespo as a player dudes! The US should hire him to teach their players how to do things like kick a ball & actually score their own goals in the world cup. Italy has more important things do do than score an own goal for the US just to keep them in the game dudes! Still it was a nice thing for Italy to do though. At least the US can say they didn't lose all their world cup 06 games!

Crespo is an awesome striker.

Huntelaar (I think thats how you spell it) is the one i think you're talking about ken and your right he is a goal-getter. United were after him at one time but it all fell through and I don't know why.
