Owen Wants To Captain Toon

(Soccer365.com) Michael Owen has admitted that he would love to captain Newcastle - but he might have to fight Joey Barton for the armband.

"I would love to skipper Newcastle United," said Owen in the Newcastle Evening Chronicle, before scoring for the Magpies against Hartlepool on Tuesday night.

Owen's main rival for the armband is thought to be Barton, who impressed with his powerful display in the victory.

Shay Given was captain against Hartlepool but the Chronicle believes that manager Sam Allardyce is not fond of having a goalkeeper as captain.

Last year's skipper was Scott Parker, who has since joined West Ham.

Michael owen would make a great skipper for the magpies. Newcastle United Rulez. If Michael owen captains we will surely win the cup again for the winners of the football cup will be renowned throughout the land and at the final score you'll hear the legions roar for the kings of geordie land.

Howay the lads.

I think owen would b perfect for the skipper. I mean he is a vertern who certainly knows how to play the game. He's a great leader and helps his team play better

Yeah.

Joey Barton is a tough player and you have to admire his commitment level on the pitch, but I'm not sure you want that crazed hot head skippering your squad... I'd stick with Owen.

anonymous, I agree. Barton is the kind of guy you'd rather have on your side than play against because of his fiery nature. But he also liable to get a red card or get arrested between matches. If Owen can stay healthy, he'd be a nice pick for a team that desperately needs a leader to emerge from the shadow of Shearer.

Exaclty yoyo. Barton is a great asset to a team because he is so firery but rite now i dont think he woulc b a good captain because of tht.
