Sir Alex Look To Saha For Goals

(Soccer365.com) Manchester United striker Louis Saha is set to make his long-awaited return to action against Sunderland at Old Trafford on Saturday.

Saha has not played since sustaining a knee injury against AC Milan in the Champions League last April but the Frenchman has been included in the squad to face Roy Keane's side.

However Wayne Rooney (broken foot) and Gary Neville (thigh) are again ruled out through injury, with England striker Rooney due to have a scan on his problem next week.

Cristiano Ronaldo is suspended while Ole Gunnar Solskjaer announced his retirement this week.

Brazil international Anderson could be involved, however, after a hamstring strain.

Kick-off on Saturday is at 17.15.

United (from): Van der Sar, Kuszczak, Heaton, Brown, Ferdinand, Vidic, O'Shea, Evra, Silvestre, Fletcher, Eagles, Carrick, Scholes, Hargreaves, Nani, Anderson, Giggs, Saha, Tevez.

Bayern Put Record On The Line

(Soccer365.com) Bayern Munich have a 100% record in the Bundesliga so far, but their first major test is around the corner.

The league leaders travel to Hamburg on Sunday, the first team to beat them after a similarly impressive start to the season two years ago.

Back then, Rafael van der Vaart and Piotr Trochowski sealed a 2-0 win for Hamburg, who moved to the top of the Bundesliga in the process.

Although last Friday's defeat to Bochum has ruled out a similar scenario for the north Germans this time, they could still claim a morale-boosting victory and send a message to the rest of the Bundesliga that Bayern can be beaten.

By the time Hamburg and Bayern take to the field on Sunday, there could already have been a change at the top of the Bundesliga.

Arminia Bielefeld, Bochum and Eintracht Frankfurt have all hit the ground running this campaign, and the three clubs being touted as relegation candidates during pre-season all have the chance to move to the top of the pile on Saturday.

Bielefeld travel to Duisburg, Bochum are at Hannover while Frankfurt face Werder Bremen.

In stark contrast, the teams tipped to do well have made less of an impact with Schalke, Stuttgart, Borussia Dortmund and Bayer Leverkusen all struggling.

Two of those sides, Schalke and Leverkusen, have the chance to put right what has gone amiss in their first three games when they meet at the Arena AufSchalke on Friday night.

Defending champions Stuttgart only managed their first win of the season against Duisburg last weekend, and will be relying on Germany striker Mario Gomez once again in the derby with Karlsruhe on Sunday.

And Dortmund travel to Hansa Rostock looking to build on their first success of the campaign last time out, when they overcame Energie Cottbus 3-0.

Thomas Doll's side will be keen to keep their season on track against a side who have yet to pick up a single point.

Struggling with Rostock at the bottom of the standings are Energie. Their coach, Petrik Sander, has found himself under pressure recently but can ease that with a victory over Nurnberg on Saturday.

Finally, Felix Magath will be hoping his Wolfsburg side can claim all three points at Hertha Berlin.

Nine-time European champions Real Madrid will face Lazio in Champions League Group C, while Inter Milan must tackle PSV Eindhoven in Group G.

Real's bid for a 10th title will also see them pit their wits against Werder Bremen and Olympiacos in the group stages, which begin on Tuesday September 18.

Italian champions Inter have been drawn with Dutch title-winners PSV, with CSKA Moscow and Fenerbahce providing the other opposition.

Reigning European champions AC Milan have been drawn with some illustrious names in Group D.

Milan players Paolo Maldini, Clarence Seedorf and Kaka were all present at the draw to pick up awards for their contributions to last year's victory.

Last season's runners-up Liverpool face Portugal's Porto, Besiktas of Turkey and France's Marseille in Group A.

Chelsea face tough games with Valencia and Schalke with Norway's Rosenborg also in the reckoning in Group B.

Police will be hoping there will be no repeat of the trouble that marred last year's matches between Roma and Manchester United after those clubs were drawn together in Group F with Sporting Lisbon of Portugal and Ukrainian champions Dynamo Kiev.

The champions of France and Germany, respectively Lyon and Stuttgart, will face tough opposition from Barcelona and Rangers in Group E.

Arsenal look to have landed on their feet with a Group H diary that features matches with Steaua Bucharest, Slavia Prague and the victors of the rescheduled qualifier between UEFA Cup holders Sevilla and AEK Athens.

Pachuca Win SuperLiga Title

(Soccer365.com) After giving up an injury time equalizer, CF Pachuca prevailed 4-3 in penalty kicks over the Los Angeles Galaxy to hoist the inaugural SuperLiga cup title at The Home Depot Center on Wednesday night.

The visitors opened the match with a focus and determination to win the title and immediately took the game to the Galaxy, pressuring in midfield which resulted in more of the possession and the majority of chances on goal.

Pachuca finally broke through in the 28 the minute off a Peter Vagenas own goal. After working a one-two combination with Juan Carlos Cacho, Christian Gimenez was behind the Galaxy defense on the left side and his service to the center was knocked in by a retreating Vagenas.

The Galaxy were fortunate to stay in the game as Pachuca failed on several good chances to add to the scoreline.

Los Angeles regrouped at halftime and looked better and created more opportunities in the second half but were just off the mark or unable to beat the Pachuca goalkeeper Miguel Calero.

With time running out in injury time, the Galaxy got what the equalizer they needed off a Chris Klein bicycle kick from 8 yards out. After Mike Randolph put a header of the cross bar and two poor clearances from the defense, Klein took advantage to even the score.

The extra time period was much like the regular time with Pachuca dominating possession and opportunities in the first half while the Galaxy fought back in the second period. Despite some good chances for both teams the game went to penalties.

Vagenas continued his frustrating outing by having the first PK saved but Joe Cannon was able to give him a pass by saving the third attempt from Pachuca. After Pachuca missed, Landon Donovan had a chance to win with the fifth kick but his shot was saved.

In sudden death, Pachuca hit their first shot but Abel Xavier put his ball off the mark and in doing so gave Pachuca the title.

Becks Hurt In SuperLiga

(Soccer365.com) David Beckham suffered a ligament strain in his right knee during Wednesday’s SuperLiga loss to Pachuca and could be out for up to six weeks.

After playing through a hard tackle early in the game, the midfielder was taken down in the left corner on a hard challenge from Fernando Salazar in the 33rd minute and immediately motioned to the sideline that he needed to come out.

“At the moment, we’re calling it a ligament strain, but in the morning I'm going for a scan to see exactly what it is and how long I'm going to be out,” the England national team player was quoted as saying on ESPNsoccernet.com.

“This is a injury that takes 4 to 6 weeks, but who knows, if the scan is not so bad maybe I’ve got a chance to play (for England). We'll know more tomorrow.”

Terry Excited With Ronaldinho Link

(Soccer365.com) Chelsea captain John Terry admits the possibility of Ronaldinho going to Stamford Bridge is "exciting" but believes the Barcelona forward would need to improve his defensive work ethic to succeed.

Rumours this week suggested Chelsea's billionaire owner Roman Abramovich held two meetings with Ronaldinho's brother and adviser in a bid to persuade the Barcelona star to join the Blues in the Barclays Premier League.

Barca have dismissed those claims and with Friday's transfer deadline looming any deal would need to be done quickly.

England defender Terry is positive about the prospect - however distant - but was also cautious.

"It was exciting seeing the link with him and it would be a great acquisition to get a player of that ability in," Terry said.

"He would give us an option if he does come and it would be great for the Premier League to have a player like Ronaldinho here. He was close to going to Manchester United a few years ago but, for me personally and for everyone at Chelsea, it would be great to have him with us.

"I'd like to think he could fit into the team, though he'd have to learn about the defensive duties expected of everyone.

"We've got wide men going forward but they've got defensive responsibilities as well."

Terry added: "It takes players a month or so to learn that you have to track back and, if you don't, then you come off.

"Once you've realised that it's about a team and defending as well, you can attack as well and he can give us something that not many in the world can give us. I suppose if he's doing what he's so good at going forward, then perhaps the manager will let him off a little bit at the back, but we'd have to see."

Hammers discuss Adriano deal

(Soccer365.com) West Ham have entered into talks with Inter Milan over the possibility of signing Brazil striker Adriano.

The 25-year-old has fallen down the pecking order at the San Siro after a loss of form in the last 12 months and his club are keen for him to gain some first-team experience.

"West Ham can confirm we are holding talks with Inter Milan over striker Adriano," said a statement on the club's website, www.whufc.com.

"The figures that have been quoted in the media are inaccurate as the possible deal is in its early stages and money has not yet been discussed.

"The club are investigating the possibility of a loan deal at this stage."

Adriano has indicated he would be willing to leave Inter but only on a permanent deal.

The Brazilian has been linked with Manchester City but it appears the Hammers have been more proactive in an attempt to bring the player to the Premier League.

Solskjaer Hangs Up Boots

(Soccer365.com) Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has brought the curtain down on his glorious playing career with Manchester United - but his Old Trafford days are far from over.

After 11 years and 366 appearances for the club he joined for a bargain £1.5million from Norwegian side Molde, Solskjaer has had to finally call it a day due to an ongoing knee injury.

Striker Solskjaer, who famously scored the winner in the Champions League final against Bayern Munich to help the club win the treble in 1999, has made several comebacks in the last four years.

The 34-year-old even scored 11 goals last season as United again won the Barclays Premier League crown, but he has never fully overcome his knee problem.

However, the man famously nicknamed 'the baby-faced assassin', will remain at United in a coaching capacity and will continue to represent the club as an official ambassador.

Although it is a sad day for Solskjaer, he appreciates he has had a fantastic career, scoring 126 goals overall.

"I would like to thank the manager (Sir Alex Ferguson), the coaching and medical staff, and most of all the supporters who have supported me through my career," said Solskjaer.

"They have been fantastic and were a real inspiration to me when I was out injured.

"The support they and the staff showed me during that time was the main motivation for me making my comeback.

"I feel proud to have represented Manchester United for 11 years, and have some very special memories."

His fondest, though, will always be scoring on his debut just six minutes after coming off the bench to secure a 2-2 home draw with Blackburn on August 25, 1996.

"I've been asked many times what's the greatest moment of my United career," said Solskjaer.

"Scoring that goal in my first game and turning round to see that Eric Cantona was the first one coming towards me to celebrate, that just made me realise, 'I'm at Old Trafford now'."

With great irony, his last goal was also after coming on as a sub against Blackburn at Old Trafford in March, scoring in the 90th minute of a 4-1 win.

There is no doubt Solskjaer will be missed on the playing side, but Ferguson is now hoping he can translate his talent to his coaching role.

"Ending your playing career is a sad day for anyone, in the case of Ole, he has 11 fantastic years he can look back on," remarked Ferguson.

"Ole has achieved everything a player could ever wish to achieve.

"He has been a great servant to the club and has always remained a model professional in his responsibility as a player, and in his demeanour, and his manners have always been exemplary.

"Ole will hopefully go on to be a good coach."

Whilst reflecting with fondness on Solskjaer's past at United, chief executive David Gill is also looking towards a bright future for the Norwegian.

"Ole has provided us all with some exceptional memories during his time here at the club," said Gill.

"Nobody will ever forget his dramatic winner in Barcelona, but much more than that his dedication and professionalism make him one of the great role models in football.

"Ole will be dearly missed as a player, but will go on to serve the club as an ambassador and a valuable coach."

Sevilla Ace Puerta Dies

(Soccer365.com) UEFA have postponed Tuesday night's Champions League qualifier between AEK Athens and Sevilla after the death on Tuesday of the Spanish club's defender Antonio Puerta.

The 22-year-old Spain international collapsed on the pitch during the weekend game against Getafe and, though he was able to walk off, suffered a relapse in the dressing room and required cardiac resuscitation.

It is believed the first-team squad is currently flying back to Spain from Greece.

Puerta has been a member of the Sevilla first team for three seasons and spent 14 years in total with the Andalusian club he joined as a boy.

Gerrard to miss Champions League match

(Soccer365.com) Liverpool captain Steven Gerrard will miss Tuesday's crucial Champions League tie against Toulouse at Anfield and there is already a doubt over his involvement with England for two vital Euro 2008 qualifiers next month.

The hairline fracture of a toe which caused him to miss last week's international friendly with Germany and the 2-0 Premier League victory at Sunderland on Saturday has ruled Gerrard out of the third qualifying round second leg against the French.

Gerrard sustained the injury when Liverpool won 1-0 in France almost a fortnight ago but played against Chelsea five days later with a pain-killing injection.

Liverpool manager Rafael Benitez is hopeful his captain will have recovered enough to face Derby at the weekend but made no promises - and should the player miss that match his participation for England against Israel and Russia would be in question.

"I would hope Steven will be a possibility to play against Derby but I am not sure, it is up to the doctors," said Benitez.

"Then we will have to see about England. It is too soon yet, it will depend very much on what England's medical people feel and our own medical staff."

England boss Steve McClaren will name his squad on Friday and Gerrard will definitely be included, but he must fear another club v country battle.

Jamie Carragher will also be missing against Toulouse after the defender spent Sunday night in hospital after sustaining a broken rib and collapsed lung at the Stadium of Light.

"Jamie will definitely be out but the injury is not as bad as it sounds. He may miss a couple of weeks, we will see," added the Liverpool manager.

Benitez will have defender Sami Hyypia available despite the Finn breaking a nose at Sunderland, with Alvaro Arbeloa a possible stand in at centre-back.

Catalans Held by 10-Man Racing

(Soccer365.com) Thierry Henry's debut ended in disappointment as Barcelona were held to a goalless draw by 10-man Racing Santander on Sunday.

Nou Camp coach Frank Rijkaard started with last season's trusted trident of Ronaldinho, Samuel Eto'o and Leo Messi, although Henry came off the bench and almost won it late on with an effort which came back off the post.

But despite their hosts having their own debut striker - Ebi Smolarek - sent off for a cynical foul on Eric Abidal, Barca were unable to find a winner.

In the day's most eventful match, Villarreal continued from where they left off last season with a comprehensive 3-0 derby win over nine-man Valencia.

In a battle between last season's fourth and fifth-placed sides, the Yellow Submarine earned a victory which took their run to nine consecutive La Liga wins.

Denmark striker Jon Dahl Tomasson opened the scoring in the 17th minute and after Valencia's own cultured marksman David Villa was given a second yellow card for a dive just before the break, Villarreal doubled their advantage through debutant Giuseppe Rossi's second-half penalty.

Shortly after that their opponents lost Joaquin to another red card before Santi Cazorla completed the rout.

Elsewhere, Recreativo Huelva proved last season was no one-off as they dominated Real Betis in a lively 1-1 draw.

Recre only narrowly missed out on a European spot in their first season back in the Spanish top flight but despite losing their coach and several top players, they enjoyed the lion's share of possession and chances against last campaign's strugglers Betis.

Florent Sinama-Pongolle fired them into the lead and they were unlucky to only earn a point after Victoriano Nano equalised four minutes before the break.

Ariel Ibagaza scored twice as Real Mallorca started their season with a bang, defeating Levante 3-0.

Ibagaza began the scoring with a penalty midway through the first half and after new recruit Daniel Guiza doubled the lead after 57 minutes, Ibagaza grabbed his second with 18 minutes remaining.

Espanyol slipped to a disappointing 1-0 defeat against newly-promoted Real Valladolid.

In the 54th minute, Daniel Kome charged down the right and pulled the ball back from the byline to a grateful Joseba Llorente, who blasted home from close range.

Athletic Bilbao and Osasuna saw out a 0-0 stalemate, Aitor Ocio's last-minute red card the only meaningful action, while Almeria enjoyed a wonderful return to the Primera Liga with a stunning 3-0 success at Deportivo La Coruna.

Alvaro Negredo handed the visitors a 19th-minute lead which Fernando Soriano doubled 11 minutes from half-time before Albert Crusat settled the contest in the 50th minute.

Nani Blast Edges Out Spurs

(Soccer365.com) Nani hit a stunning 30-yard winner as Manchester United beat Tottenham 1-0 at Old Trafford to get their Premier League defence up and running.

With United looking set for a point at best from the pulsating tussle, Nani repaid the first portion of his £17million transfer fee with a sensational second-half winner.

It allowed Sir Alex Ferguson's men to register their first win of the season, and prevented them making their worst start since the year Ron Atkinson was sacked.

But it was tough luck on Spurs who put a week of off-field problems behind them to battle manfully throughout, producing a stirring display for their under-fire manager Martin Jol.

And they also had what they thought was a stonewall penalty claim turned down shortly before Nani's decisive strike.

How Jol must hate Old Trafford. Two years ago Pedro Mendes had a perfectly legitimate goal disallowed because none of the officials spotted his long-range shot had dropped over the line.

And Dutchman is now probably nursing an equal sense of injustice after Wes Brown appeared to block Dimitar Berbatov's strike with his arm inside the box.

Nevertheless, with Robbie Keane hitting the bar inside 20 seconds and Berbatov denied only by Rio Ferdinand's desperate goal-line clearance before the penalty claim, Jol could legitimately argue his side deserved much more than a third loss, which makes his stated aim of a Champions League place all the more harder to attain.

Not that Jol's troubles will concern Ferguson too much after United finally got their title defence up and running after a nightmare start.

Despite Ferguson's bold pre-match declaration that his side would win, confidence inside the United camp must be fragile just now and Robbie Keane had the perfect opportunity to inflict yet more damage inside the opening 20 seconds.

After Nani gifted Steed Malbranque possession deep inside his own half, he fed Berbatov, whose precise flick offered Keane his sight of goal. But, from 20 yards, the Spurs skipper could only clip the top of Edwin van der Sar's crossbar.

It was the nearest either side came to breaking the deadlock during an opening period memorable for the frequent songs of the Tottenham faithful offering their backing to Jol and for the number of times United got to within 40 yards of the visitors goal and created precisely nothing.

On his home debut, Owen Hargreaves was off target with two long-range efforts, Paul Scholes flicked a shot wide and Michael Carrick was shaved the post with a 25-yard effort.

However, up front on his own, Carlos Tevez was ineffective, the need for support clear for all to see. But, with Cristiano Ronaldo suspended, Wayne Rooney nursing a broken foot and both Louis Saha and Anderson still injured, the Argentina star was forced to forage alone.

If Ferguson thought things would improve after the break he was sadly mistaken.

Yet again, Spurs had the best chance as Ricardo Rocha climbed above Rio Ferdinand but, from barely six yards, could only head Gareth Bale's free-kick wide.

There was not even an hour on the clock when Michael Carrick was taken off after a poor performance against his former club.

It proved the spark for a 10-minute period in which Tottenham came agonisingly close to scoring, the had what they felt was a certain penalty claim turned down before Nani finally broke the deadlock.

Berbatov was convinced a spot-kick should have been awarded and he led a posse of visiting players around referee Howard Webb.

Just prior to that, Berbatov must have thought he had opened the scoring when he rose first after a tangle with Nemanja Vidic, then prodded a shot through Van der Sar's legs, only for Rio Ferdinand to boot clear from virtually on his own line.

The full scale of those incidents going against Tottenham became apparent on United's next attack as Nani collected a loose ball 30 yards out, turned towards the visitors goal, then unleashed a magnificent shot which appeared to flick off Tevez before it flew in.

Sven takes consolation from defeat

(Soccer365.com) Manchester City boss Sven-Goran Eriksson lost his 100% record in the Barclays Premier League but remained upbeat after Kasper Schmeichel's heroics almost earned them a point at Arsenal.

Schmeichel saved Robin van Persie's penalty in the second half at the Emirates Stadium, but it was Cesc Fabregas who broke the deadlock, finding the top corner with 10 minutes remaining as City conceded their first goal of the season.

"It is tough to lose but I think we played better than against Manchester United," said Eriksson. "I am rather happy: we worked hard, we stood up to Arsenal when they moved the ball around, as they are famous for, but we also played some good football."

For all of Arsenal's possession, Richard Dunne and Micah Richards combined at the heart of City's defence to frustrate the hosts, the only mistake from Richards coming in the 66th minute when he brought down Alexander Hleb.

Schmeichel denied Van Persie with his legs before Fabregas scored the winner. While Eriksson is looking to bolster his squad with a striker, Schmeichel's form means he is not in the market for a goalkeeper.

"After I saw Schmeichel the first time, I said that we would only get a new goalkeeper if we found a new Petr Cech or someone like that," said the City boss.

"The way he is playing at the moment, we could ask no more from him. I don't think he could do much about the goal, he saved the penalty and even though he is not the biggest keeper, he has a presence you can feel from the bench. He is very brave as well."

Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger lost Philippe Senderos (ankle) in the warm-up and Bacary Sagna (back) in the first half. After late wins against Fulham and Sparta Prague, the Frenchman was delighted with another example of his side fighting until the end.

"I was worried a bit but the side is ready to fight until the last second. The defenders had a lot of work to do and they did it very well," he said.

"Eventually Fabregas came through and the midfield is getting goals now. We won with style, against a good side and we defended very well. We created chances but even when things didn't go for us we kept going."

USWNT Ends WC Prep With Cruise

(Soccer365.com) The U.S. Women’s National Team put an emphatic finishing touch on its preparation schedule for the 2007 Women’s World Cup, powering past Finland, 4-0, in the team’s final match before leaving for China on Monday.

The U.S. earned first half goals from Shannon Boxx and Kristine Lilly, and second half strikes from Lindsay Tarpley and Heather O’Reilly, on a beautiful, clear evening at The Home Depot Center in Carson, Calif.

The U.S. team will have one day off before departing for Shanghai on Monday to begin the final run to its 2007 FIFA Women’s World Cup opener against North Korea on Sept. 11 in Chengdu, which will be broadcast live on ESPN2. With the win, the USA improved its record to 13-0-2 in 2007, which includes an impressive 10-0-2 mark against teams that will be playing in the 2007 FIFA Women’s World Cup.

The U.S. dominated from start to finish, piling up a 38-2 shot advantage across 90 minutes as Finland goalkeeper Tinja-Riikka Korpela made 12 saves and saw numerous other shots flash past the posts or over the crossbar.

“Finland is an organized team defensively,” said U.S. head coach Greg Ryan. “They played in a 4-5-1 with 10 players behind the ball most of the first half and we were a little out of sync. We had a lot of opportunities in the final third but we didn’t create good opportunities out of them; over-hit crosses, rushed our passes. We talked at halftime about playing a little more composed, a little more settled, picking the right opportunities to get behind, and I thought we played well.”

The game’s first goal came from a familiar face in Carson, with hometown hero Boxx scoring for the fifth time in five games she has played at The Home Depot Center. Boxx, who hails from nearby Torrance, looped a perfectly placed header over Korpela in the 30th minute after Lilly found her on a free kick from the left flank.

“Shannon is looking like herself again, which is fantastic,” said Ryan. “She’s one of the best in the world at set play goals. She looked like a forward tonight taking players on. I think she likes it here (at The Home Depot Center).”

The assist was the 100th of Lilly’s career, putting her in an exclusive club with Mia Hamm as the only two players in women’s soccer history to score more than 100 goals and pass for 100 or more assists.

The USA added to the lead six minutes later, this time with Lilly on the receiving end of a great assist. On her 126th career goal, the U.S. captain easily touched the ball into an empty net after dynamic midfielder Lori Chalupny raced into the right side of the penalty box, sucked the goalkeeper to the near post and then rolled a precise square pass to Lilly for the easy tally.

Moments after Lilly’s goal, a rolling power-outage hit Carson, causing the stadium lights to flicker and go out at the 40-minute mark. The teams were able to finish the half in twilight before the stadium’s lights were reset, and the start of the second half was not delayed.

Tarpley peppered the Finland goal all night, launching eight shots before she scored the USA’s third goal on her ninth attempt in the 68th minute. On the goal, she deftly rolled off her defender to win a skipping ball from Christie Rampone behind the defense in the right side of the penalty box, took a quick touch to the right to evade the lunging Korpela and struck her shot along the ground just inside the right post from 10 yards out. It was her 17th career international goal.

The U.S. closed out the night and their Women’s World Cup preparation with a fourth goal on one of the better passing combinations you will see. The play started with Rampone playing a perfect pass from behind the halfway line into Tarpley at the top of the penalty area. Tarpley turned on the ball quickly to feed Carli Lloyd to the right of the penalty area, and Lloyd hit a perfect one-time pass into the middle for a charging O’Reilly, who finished perfectly on a hard slide from six yards out. The goal was O’Reilly’s third of the year and the 11th of her career.

“Tonight, we hit the back of the net and had tons of chances,” added Ryan. “I thought that we had a lot of energy in attack tonight. We said let’s just roll up our sleeves and go after them in attack. It’s important to carry that kind of spirit into the World Cup. We are going to go after teams and if they can hang with us OK, if not, we’ll just keep swinging until we can knock them out.”

U.S. forward Abby Wambach was forced to leave the game in the 27th minute after jamming a toe earlier in the match during a tackle with a Finnish player.

Ryan made all six of his allowed substitutions, getting valuable minutes for the U.S. reserves while giving some veterans a bit more rest. One of those subs was midfielder Aly Wagner, who saw her first game action since May 12 vs. Canada after recovering from a groin injury. Wagner came close to scoring after a nifty dribble in the penalty box, but her left-footed shot was saved by the diving Korpela.

U.S. Makes Great Group Escape

(Soccer365.com) The U.S. Under-17 Men’s National Team advanced to the Round of 16 of the FIFA Under-17 World Cup with a 2-0 win over Belgium in their third and final Group E match at the Cheonan Sports Complex in Cheonan, South Korea.

Second-half substitute Kirk Urso opened the scoring in the 63rd minute and Mykell Bates added an insurance goal seven minutes later.

Combined with Tunisia’s victory over Tajikistan in the night’s other Group E matchup, the U.S. leapfrogged from fourth to second place in the group and will play Germany, who finished first in Group F with their 4-0 win over Trinidad & Tobago this evening in Ulsan. The U.S. will stay in Cheonan to face Germany on Thursday, Aug. 30 at 8 p.m. local time (7 a.m. ET) and fans can follow the match live on ESPNU and ussoccer.com's MatchTracker.

This is the third straight time the U.S. has advanced to the second round at the FIFA U-17 World Cup.

“We’re very happy, and we’ve accomplished our first goal, which was to get out of our group,” said U.S. Under-17 Men’s National Team head coach John Hackworth. “We had moments in our two previous games that were pretty good, but we didn’t do well for 90 minutes in those games. Today we stuck to our game plan throughout and didn’t get rattled by anything.”

Hackworth made three changes from the last match, with midfielder Gregory Garza returning to the starting line-up and goalkeeper Josh Lambo and defender Brandon Zimmerman earning their first starts of the tournament. Urso, who scored the game-winner, made his tournament debut when he came on at halftime. The slight chances seemed to be the right mix as the U.S. created 21 shots, including 12 on goal, their most during group play.

The Americans pressed early and often in the first half and created a chance in the first minute from a free kick. The ball was sent in from the right sideline and fell to Bates, but he couldn’t get off a good shot and the ball ended up in Belgium goalkeeper Jo Coppens’ hands.

In the 22nd minute one of the USA’s best chances came from the unlikely foot of goalkeeper Josh Lambo. Hitting a free kick from 10 yards in front of his own penalty area, Lambo’s long service carried over Belgium’s backline and took a skipping bounce on the wet turf in front of Coppens, who was off his line, forcing the Belgium keeper to recover just in time to stretch just enough to allow him to push the ball over the crossbar.

Three minutes later, Billy Schuler collected the ball at the top of the area and slipped his way past two defenders before pushing the ball past the goalkeeper, but just going inches wide of the right post. Regaining possession in the midfield seconds later, Jared Jeffrey ripped a shot from 20 yards out that went wide of the near post.

Belgium created chances on the other end as well, but the U.S. defense did not allow many chances on Lambo’s goal. In the 32nd minute, Eden Hazard, Belgium’s most dangerous player on the night, combined with Christian Benteke in the U.S. defensive end, but Bates stood him up and won the ball cleanly.

With the U.S. dominating the majority of play, Belgium’s chances of turning the tide weakened in the 36th minute when Benteke was sent off after receiving a straight red card for a high sliding tackle on Sheanon Williams.

Near the end of the first half, Jeffrey and winger Alex Nimo combined to find Schuler in the box, but Schuler’s shot was blocked out of bounds. On the ensuing throw in, Jeffrey found Ellis McLoughlin alone in the box, but his shot was knocked down by Coppens.

The two teams exchanged chances early in the second half as Williams took a dangerous shot from the wing that forced Coppens to fully extend to tip the ball over the endline. Later, Hazard penetrated the U.S. defense and fired a hard, low shot from 20 yards out that went wide of Lambo’s goal. In the 52nd minute, Nimo received the ball on the wing and carried it into the box beating a pair of defenders, but his shot went just wide.

The U.S. finally broke through when Gregory Garza took a shot at the top of the box that deflected off of a defender and bounced high into the box where Urso was waiting onside. Urso, who had come in at halftime for his first minutes of the tournament, took a touch to bring the ball down and then hit a hard shot that Coppens got a piece of, but couldn’t keep out of the goal.

A little more than a minute after taking the lead, the U.S. almost tallied again, this time from a nice combination play through the middle of Belgium’s defense that slipped Nimo into the box. He pushed it around the charging Coppens, where Garza was able to run onto it, but a sliding tackle cleared the ball from his feet while bringing him down, although no foul was called.

In what seemed like a repeat of the opening goal against Tajikistan, a Garza corner kick in the 71st minute found the head of Bates, who jumped over his defender and gave the goalkeeper no chance. With the insurance goal, Bates now leads the team in scoring for the tournament with two goals.

“The team right now is relieved to have played well tonight, but we know we still have work to do in this tournament,” said Bates. “We’re going to relax and enjoy this win tonight, and then it’s back to work.”

The final effort from Belgium came in the 78th minute when Dmitri Daeseleire played in a ball from the flank that looked like a cross, but ended up on target, forcing Lambo to tip it over the endline at the last second.

Lambo earned the USA’s first shutout in a FIFA U-17 World Cup since 1999, when the U.S. defeated Uruguay, 1-0, in group play.

We Need a Breather – Donovan

(Soccer365.com) Following a 3-0 loss to Chivas USA that exposed the team’s waning energy level, Galaxy star Landon Donovan admitted that the team was running on wobbly legs.

Los Angeles has played 10 games in 35 days, five of which have come on the road.

The bad news is it will get worse before it gets better for the banged up squad; they have three more games in the next week.

"I can't remember, maybe ever in the history of professional soccer, that a team has had more games in closer succession with travel, with injuries," sighed Donovan. "It sounds like excuses, but we're humans, not robots."

"Eventually guys are going to break down - a few more guys got muscle strains tonight because you just can't physically do it."

Nedved Pleads For Patience

(Soccer365.com) Juventus will be hoping to get their return to Serie A off to a good start against Livorno.

All eyes will be on the Bianconeri to see just how far up the table they can finish this term after winning promotion just 12 months after being relegated for match-fixing.

However, veteran Czech winger Pavel Nedved has appealed to the Juve fans to be patient.

He told the club's official website: "How much time do we need? Who knows. I'd be happy with one or two months, but maybe we'll need more than that.

"Nobody can know for sure, but for now I'd be content to see a determined Juve, making progress and never giving up.

"More than anything I want to have fun, playing the derby and the games against Internazionale and AC Milan - those big matches that both we and the fans sorely missed.

"Let's enjoy them now that we're back and I'm sure we'll do very well."

He also praised new coach Claudio Ranieri, adding: "As a person, he reminds me of (Sven-Goran) Eriksson, because he's a gentleman, and the way he's educating us all.

"But his football philosophy is different: he likes to go forward more, whereas Eriksson was more concerned with defending."

Ranieri himself this week revealed how disappointed he was to be missing several key players through international commitments so close to the start of the new campaign.

"At this point to not have nine international players available is discouraging," he said.

"Preparations for a return to the Serie A with the whole squad available would be better."

Winger Mauro Camoranesi, who has been handed the number eight shirt this season, played his first game of the year in a friendly last week and lasted 45 minutes, hitting the bar with a header in a solid display.

He could feature at the Stadio Olimpico in some capacity but Alessandro Birindelli, Vincenzo Iaquinta and Domenico Criscito are unlikely to play as they are not yet fully fit.

Livorno have more pressing injury worries as they will be without key players, Giuliano Giannichedda and Vikash Dhorasoo.

Giannichedda will be unable to face his former employers after straining his right knee, while fellow newcomer Dhorasoo has failed to recover from a groin injury.

However coach Fernando Orsi is still looking forward to opening the Serie A campaign against such esteemed opposition.

He told the club's official website: "Juventus boast a strong squad but we hope to be able to fight them until the last.

"It is an attractive welcome to be able to play an opponent of such a high calibre.

"We are not in the best of shape but we have prepared ourselves well."

Keller Signs With Fulham

(Soccer365.com) After some time in limbo, Kasey Keller signed with Fulham today. The U.S. national teamer has spent the last 16 years in Europe but was looking for the right fit before signing another contract.

“It’s fantastic to be back in the Premiership after a couple of year’s absence, and when the opportunity to join Fulham came up it was an exciting proposition that didn’t take too much consideration,” the Washington native said on the official Fulham website.

“I know that Fulham already has two quality goalkeepers, but I would like to think that I can add something to the squad in terms of its options, and I am really enthusiastic about this new challenge.”

The goalkeeper joins Brian McBride, Carlos Bocanegra and Clint Dempsey at the London side.

This afternoon Lawrie Sanchez said:

‘I’m delighted that Kasey has joined us and I’m sure that he’ll be a great addition to the squad,” manager Lawrie Sanchez said of the signing.

“Obviously with Antti being injured at the Emirates it was important that we added some strength and depth in that area and Kasey is a proven professional with impeccable international credentials. It’s vital that we have cover in all areas throughout the squad, and I think he will be a valuable asset to us over the course of the season.”

Keller has experience in the English leagues first joining Millwall in 1989 before a move to Leicester City. He then spent time in Spain with La Liga outfit Rayo Vallecano before returning to Tottenham.

Keller last played for Borussia Mönchengladbach in the German Bundesliga before the side was relegated last season.

England Stunned By German Fightback

(Soccer365.com) Frank Lampard's early goal was not enough as Germany came from behind to beat England 2-1 at Wembley and heap more pressure on Steve McClaren.

There was not a penalty in sight but Paul Robinson's howler ensured England still experienced that familiar sinking feeling against their old rivals.

Lampard's first international goal for 12 months had raised hopes of a rare home win against the old enemy.

Unfortunately, on a night of experimentation and preparation, the positives gained from an encouraging performance which deserved better than the eventual result, will be overshadowed by Robinson's woes.

The Tottenham man gifted Kevin Kuranyi Germany's equaliser with a miserable mistake and nothing during his 45-minute appearance suggested anything other than that his replacement, veteran David James, should be installed when Israel head to Wembley on September 8 for a game coach Steve McClaren has already described as "must-win" if England are to reach Euro 2008.

The goalkeeping conundrum will occupy McClaren's mind for most of the next 17 days, although there was little Robinson could have done to keep out the sweet strike from Christian Pander which ultimately gave Germany their win.

With injuries to Steven Gerrard and Owen Hargreaves ensuring McClaren did not face the recurring difficulty of shoe-horning his star midfield trio into the same team, it was perhaps no surprise Lampard revelled in the open space he found.

It has increasingly appeared the Chelsea man would be the expendable one of the three. Yet his eye for goal, allied to the vast experience he has gained at the highest level for both club and country mean Lampard should not be sidelined without every effort being made to keep him in the team.

Whether his talents would stretch to a role just behind a lone striker in the key clashes next month - when Wayne Rooney will still be nursing his broken foot - is open to debate.

There was no denying the quality of his finish though after Micah Richards had capped a thrilling solo burst by slipping a pass inside Pander to provide Lampard with the chance to flash home his 13th England goal.

It was the high point of another excellent performance from Richards, who is quickly establishing himself as an essential member of McClaren's team.

Certainly, the England coach faces a very delicate choice at right-back once Gary Neville is fit.

Sadly, the same is now also true of the goalkeeping position as Robinson's decline continues.

The 27-year-old Tottenham man is haunted by the error that gifted Croatia their opening goal in Zagreb last October and his confidence now appears shot to pieces.

With a clear head, Robinson would surely have taken the safe option to push Bernd Schneider's cross over his own bar when the Germany captain launched the ball to an unguarded near post from the right touchline.

Instead, having failed to regain his ground following his own initial clearance, Robinson took the catastrophic option of pushing it back into his own six-yard box, straight into the path of Kuranyi, who could barely believe his luck as he tapped into an empty net.

Trust between coach and player is a major component of any team sport. In the case of McClaren and Robinson it must be eroding fast. Certainly another mistake like that against Israel or Russia, who head to Wembley four days' later, could easily end up costing the England coach his job.

It was not Robinson's only error either. Had Christoph Metzelder's header been on target when he met a Pander free-kick the England keeper charged out to catch without getting anywhere near, Robinson's face would have been as red as the German shirts.

In the event, the visitors did not need any help from Robinson for their second as Pander finished off an intricate three-pass move by belting what proved to be the winner into the top corner.

Although it is argued England do not play friendlies, the result should not eclipse the positive aspects of the evening.

Michael Owen lasted almost an hour and in three weeks' time the Newcastle forward's sharpness may have returned to an extent where he will take at least one of the two good chances that fell his way.

And, in fairness to Owen, it took an outstanding save from Jens Lehmann to deny him on the first occasion.

Joe Cole too can be reasonably satisfied with his efforts, while there was no sign David Beckham's trans-Atlantic trip had taken any toll.

Major League Soccer's highest-profile star set up Kieron Dyer twice in as many minutes midway through the second half.

The latter opportunity was the best but Dyer disappointingly slid his shot wide, while Philipp Lahm nodded John Terry's header off the line near the end as England continued their fruitless chase for parity.

Hahnemann Eyes Top 10 Finish

(Soccer365.com) Despite spending the off season rehabing a severely broken hand, Reading goalkeeper Marcus Hahnemann is off to an amazing start to the Premier Leage season. The American international has already shut out Manchester United and Everton. In a recent email exchange with Soccer365's Lars Lifrak he talks about his team's start, his amazing performance in Old Trafford and how to trash talk a fellow American without actually saying anything out loud.

365: From the outside looking in, it seems like 4 points in 3 games against 3 of the top 6 teams from a year ago is a great start. Does it feel that way to you guys?
Marcus Hahnemann: We are definitely happy with the 4 points. To play against Man U, Chelsea and then Everton who were on six points until we faced them, I’d say we are doing alright. It was also important to get our first win of the season. It was a difficult game with John Oster being injured after we’d already used our 3rd substitution on Bobby Convey, but we had to just keep playing on. Kevin Doyle went up to right mid and John came game back on with his ankle taped very heavily. He went up front and gave us everything he could give. We were under some extra pressure because of that, so it’s a great feeling to end up with our second clean sheet of the year. We’re also now in the top half of the table.

365: Is it any different playing against another American keeper? Did you and Tim Howard talk before or after the game?
MH: Not really. A game is a game, but especially with us being away together with the national team next week, I will be in the back of the bus and have a big grin on.

365: If you could talk a little about the game you had at Old Trafford. An amazing performance... what thoughts were going through your mind during the onslaught of shots you were facing? How big a result was that for Reading to start the season with?
MH: To start the season after just coming back from the broken hand that has 18 screws in it I knew I was going to be in for a lot of work. But to end up with a clean sheet is truly unbelievable. It is a result that will give us confidence and some very positive press but on our season as a whole it will have a very little impact. Our season will be decided by how we do against the teams around us in the table.

365: What did you think was your best moment? I thought it was either the save on Christiano Ronaldo in the 63rd minute or the save on the Paul Scholes header in the 89th.
MH: My best save was from Ronaldo, the free kick that went to my right hand side that dipped and hit the ground right in front of me. But where I directed the ball is probably the most important part. If you can't hold it you want to make sure that it goes into good areas.

365: You’ve been playing these games with a broken hand? Are you now the Donovan McNabb of the Premier League (he played a half in the NFL with a broken ankle)?
MH: I broke the hand in the last game of the season on May 13th. It was a pretty nasty break, I just got kicked and I knew right away that the hand was broken. I had surgery 3 days later, done by Dr. Viola in Vail. My buddy Mark Wiltshire works with the surgeons from the Stedman-Hawkins Clinic and they got me in very quickly. So technically my hand is probably not completely healed but there are 18 screws and 2 plates. The only real issue is strength in the arm and hand.

365: What are the expectations you have for this team this season? Last year I assume the goal was just to avoid relegation, what about this season?
Top 10 would be great again with the possibility to get in to Europe and at least to give the fans something to talk about.

365: What are your goals as far as the U.S. National Team is concerned?
MH: The next World Cup.

365: Last question (we always try to finish on a light note). I've just started a fantasy Premier League team.... who should I pick as my goalkeeper?
MH: Edwin (van der Saar), or myself.

Alves may leave Holland for Boro

(Soccer365.com) Middlesbrough have offered Heerenveen nine million euros (£6.1m) for star striker Afonso Alves, according to a report in Holland.

The 26-year-old Brazilian was top scorer in the Dutch Eredivisie last season with 34 goals and says he could move to Boro.

"They are seriously interested in me," Alves told De Telegraaf. "Middlesbrough have shown this, too, with their offer."

He added: "For such a big club and for the Premier League, I am always open and the first talks are really hopeful. That will not be the problem."

De Telegraaf claims Heerenveen have already lined up a replacement for Alves should the move go through. The club have been tracking 18-year-old Atletico Mineira striker Paulo Henrique at a youth tournament in Terborg.

Henrique made his top-flight debut in Brazil this season, and has so far scored three goals in 13 Campeonato Brasileiro games.

Pato Wants To Learn From Ronaldo

(Soccer365.com) New AC Milan capture Alexandre Pato is playing down his soaring reputation.

The 17-year-old, who joined the Rossoneri from Internacional in the summer, is seen as the great new hope of Brazilian football.

But Pato, whose team-mates will include Kaka, Cafu and Ronaldo, believes there are players more deserving of that tag in Milan.

Pato told 'Zero Hora': "The true phenomenon is Ronaldo and I want to learn from him and ask him advice.

"When I arrived at Milanello for the medical tests Ronaldo came to see me, was at my side and told me to see him if I needed anything. I have always wanted to play with him and delighted I now can."

Mazzarri: I Can Tame Cassano

(Soccer365.com) Sampdoria coach Walter Mazzarri feels he will be able to get the best out of new signing Antonio Cassano.

Samp have finalised a year-long loan for the Italian international, who comes in from Real Real Madrid.

"The lad called me and I am very, very happy about that," said Mazzarri.

"It was an important act of humility that shows the first great step towards the right recovery for a player of undoubted quality.

"He certainly doesn't lack the vision and flair. He must focus only on his work, as the past does not exist. As far as I am concerned, my rapport with the player will begin from scratch the day he arrives here for training.

"Usually in this sport when you buy a player, you ask those who worked with him before what he is like. Well, I have never done that and will not start now. I don't want to be conditioned by things I may have heard about him.

"I shall give him the same talk I had with every other player. Here there are rules, respect them and I will respect you. That is all. I don't care what he did before."

Davies Banking On Feilhaber

(Soccer365.com) Derby manager Billy Davies is banking on £1million midfielder signing Benny Feilhaber gaining international clearance to face Tottenham at White Hart Lane this weekend.

Feilhaber joined the Rams on a three-year contract from Hamburg on Wednesday but was ineligible for the 1-0 defeat to Manchester City at Eastlands, the 22-year-old restricted to a warm-up session with his new team-mates.

Davies is nonetheless confident the America international will be allowed to make his debut against Spurs.

The Pride Park chief said: "We need the international clearance before 5pm tomorrow, but I am optimistic we will receive the paperwork in time.

"Benny is a player we have been tracking for something like a year, and I think we got him out of Hamburg just in time - because after another six months the really big clubs would have been interested.

"He can play anywhere in midfield - left, right or in the middle - and he has a goal in him.

"One thing he certainly does not lack is confidence - he is American."

Beckham Bends It On United

(Soccer365.com) David Beckham enjoyed a dream first start for the Los Angeles Galaxy with a trademark free kick goal and an assist to send his new team on the way to the inaugural SuperLiga final with a victory over DC United at the Home Depot Center on Wednesday.

Beckham was a surprise starter given the ankle problems that had restricted him to just two brief substitute's appearances in his first month in America.

He played 63 minutes against DC United, scoring one goal and making another before being subbed midway through the second half and immediately having his troublesome left ankle wrapped in ice as he watched the rest of the game from the Galaxy bench.

Beckham was also handed the captaincy at Landon Donovan's expense by Galaxy head coach Frank Yallop and rose to the occasion with a bending 28th-minute free-kick that left DC United keeper Troy Perkins helpless as it crashed into the net.

Beckham, who had been booked in the first half for a reckless tackle on DC captain Jaime Moreno, followed his goal with a perfect pass out of midfield two minutes after the restart which Donovan took to the edge of the area before slotting home to double the Galaxy lead as the LA side closed in on the August 29 final against Mexican champions CF Pachuca.

The Galaxy had once again been slow starters as they played their first home game since beating Pachuca in the SuperLiga group stages on July 24.

The Home Depot Center pitch had been turned into a Motocross arena for the X Games in the meantime and a newly-laid pitch did not look ideal for Beckham's suspect ankle. At least it was a real grass surface and the England midfielder looked perfectly at ease as the game got under way with his wife Victoria watching from the stands with their youngest son Cruz.

Galaxy's Joe Cannon was by far the busiest of the two goalkeepers, tipping over a long-range Moreno shot after 11 minutes and making a flying save from Josh Gros four minutes later.

Beckham showed no signs of tentativeness as he got stuck into with some strong challenges, although his two-footed tackle on Moreno in the 18th minute rightly earned him a yellow card from referee Alex Prus.

More positive was his partnership with Donovan, who in the 20th minute broke out of the Galaxy half, beating two United players before sending the ball down the right wing to an overlapping Beckham. The Englishman chased the pass 30-yards before putting in a low cross low which was cut out by defender Devon McTavish at the near post.

Beckham was given a taste of retribution for his earlier lunge on Moreno midway through the first half when his legs were whipped from under him by Ben Olsen. He jumped straight up with a grin and was soon rewarded for his composure when McTavish fouled Carlos Pavon just outside the DC area.

As excitement rose sharply in the crowd, Beckham was finally able to live up to his star billing, standing poised at right angles to the goal as the DC defence organised its wall.

Their efforts were futile as Beckham lifted the ball over the left edge and watched as the ball curled with a dip past a static Perkins into the keeper's bottom left hand corner.

It was the perfect way for Beckham to open his account and it was good enough to give the Galaxy the first-half lead.

Galaxy raced out of the gates at the restart as Beckham slid the ball form inside the centre circle to a fast-running Donovan and the USA international advancing to the edge of the United area before slotting home right-footed to give the Galaxy a 2-0 lead.

Cannon had plenty more to do, turning an Emilio shot round the post in the 50th minute and saving from the same player from point-blank range three minutes later.

Beckham had an opportunity to add a second goal when Ben Olsen fouled Kyle Martino 30-yards out from goal three minutes before the hour mark but Perkins was equal to the task, saving at full stretch to his right.

It was Beckham's last contribution as he was subbed six minutes later to a standing ovation from the crowd and the congratulations of a grateful Yallop and the rest of the Galaxy bench.

Benitez 'Confident' Of Heinze Deal

(Soccer365.com) Liverpool boss Rafael Benitez has expressed his confidence in the outcome of his attempts to sign Gabriel Heinze from Manchester United.

Red Devils boss Sir Alex Ferguson insists that he will not sell the full-back to Liverpool under any circumstances, even if they have met United's valuation.

Heinze has called in his lawyers and, after a meet
