Adu Delighted By Reds Move

(Soccer365.com) After finally completing his transfer from Real Salt Lake to Benfica, U.S. international Freddy Adu declared himself pleased as punch to local reporters.

The teen phenom cleared the last hurdle with a clean bill of health to complete the $2 million switch.

"This is a dream for me," Adu said. "I always wanted to play for a great European club and Benfica is a great one."

"In my opinion, Benfica is one of the ten biggest clubs in the world… I am only 18 and to have the chance to play for Benfica is fabulous."

While I'm generally a big supporter of U.S. soccer in general, I'm not sure Adu is of the quality necessary to be a regular in the lineup of a club the caliber of Benfica. Good luck to him all the same.

The young grasshopper is ready.

It should be interesting. One usually doesn't see any Americans in the European leagues.

Stephan, I guess you haven't noticed but there are plenty of Americans in the European leagues now. Brian McBride, Carlos Bocanegra, Clint Dempsey, Jonathan Spector, Bobby Convey, Tim Howard, Marcus Hahnemann, Brad Friedel are all in the EPL. DeMarcus Beasely is now with the Rangers. Michael Bradley and Lee Nguyen play in Holland. Steve Cherundolo, Kasey Keller, Benny Feilhaber have been in the Bundesliga.

As for Adu, I had doubts about him too, but he played very well in the U-20 WC. Hopefully he can carry that form over to Benfica, because he never really did anything in the MLS. The Portuguese league seems to be a good fit for him though, much better than the EPL or Serie A.

Adu will do well in the portuguese league. He will learn from good experienced players such as Rui Costa and Nuno Gomes. He will be a rising star in Portugal.

Wow. Stephen u need to catch up on ur futbol man. Like yoyo said there is quite a few americans who play european futbol. But Freddy shouldnt b one of them. Yes he is a good prospect and a decent footballer but he also is one of the most overrated players in the game of futbol. He is improving but as for an immediate help he will do no good. I mean hes already playing in one of the worst leagues in the world and really hasnt made a splash in the mls. So why does he move? He says playing for a very technical team will fit him because he is a very technical player. Come-on freddy let someone else praise u. You go on the news and brag about how good technically u are and then u go out on the pitch and play how u do. Please humble urself and then maybe u will become a great player. Intill then keep it simple and keep it real.

that fool sucks like donvoan. he is going to come back to the MLS like evrybody else and cry cause he didnt get enought playing time

For the love of God, keep wiritng these articles.
