Pachuca Win SuperLiga Title

(Soccer365.com) After giving up an injury time equalizer, CF Pachuca prevailed 4-3 in penalty kicks over the Los Angeles Galaxy to hoist the inaugural SuperLiga cup title at The Home Depot Center on Wednesday night.

The visitors opened the match with a focus and determination to win the title and immediately took the game to the Galaxy, pressuring in midfield which resulted in more of the possession and the majority of chances on goal.

Pachuca finally broke through in the 28 the minute off a Peter Vagenas own goal. After working a one-two combination with Juan Carlos Cacho, Christian Gimenez was behind the Galaxy defense on the left side and his service to the center was knocked in by a retreating Vagenas.

The Galaxy were fortunate to stay in the game as Pachuca failed on several good chances to add to the scoreline.

Los Angeles regrouped at halftime and looked better and created more opportunities in the second half but were just off the mark or unable to beat the Pachuca goalkeeper Miguel Calero.

With time running out in injury time, the Galaxy got what the equalizer they needed off a Chris Klein bicycle kick from 8 yards out. After Mike Randolph put a header of the cross bar and two poor clearances from the defense, Klein took advantage to even the score.

The extra time period was much like the regular time with Pachuca dominating possession and opportunities in the first half while the Galaxy fought back in the second period. Despite some good chances for both teams the game went to penalties.

Vagenas continued his frustrating outing by having the first PK saved but Joe Cannon was able to give him a pass by saving the third attempt from Pachuca. After Pachuca missed, Landon Donovan had a chance to win with the fifth kick but his shot was saved.

In sudden death, Pachuca hit their first shot but Abel Xavier put his ball off the mark and in doing so gave Pachuca the title.
