Spalletti: We're The Team To Beat
(Soccer365.com) Roma coach Luciano Spalletti believes "the wind has changed" in Italy after watching his side win the Supercoppa with a 1-0 win over Internazionale.
Italy midfielder Daniele De Rossi scored the only goal from the penalty spot as the Giallorossi - the Coppa Italia winners - overcame the league champions in the traditional curtain-raiser to the Serie A season at the San Siro.
After being beaten by Inter in the same game last term, it was a welcome change for Spalletti, who is bullish over his chances heading into the new campaign.
"I am especially happy for my players who played a great game," he said. "The wind has changed. Now Roma can go to the San Siro and be the number one team to beat this season."
The Nerazzurri headed into the game looking to join AC Milan as the only team to clinch the title for a third consecutive year, but resilient defending was what denied them - according to Spalletti.
"The defence was very good at containing Inter's play, but I think it was the work of all the team," added the Roma coach.
"If we are able to play well in attack, then there are less problems at the back."
Captain Francesco Totti echoed Spalletti's sentiments, claiming he expects the Eternal City giants to challenge on all fronts this season.
He said: "It's an important success. We were able to prove we have a strong and competitive squad to win at a very difficult stadium.
"We gave everything we had. This is a different Roma compared to last season and this season we have more possibilities. Now, I expect continuity."
Totti, who is also the team's regular penalty-taker, surprised many when he surrendered the ball to De Rossi to take the 78th-minute spot-kick after himself being hauled to the ground by Nicolas Burdisso.
However, he played down speculation the decision had anything to do with him missing a few from 12 yards last season.
"I felt a pain in one of my flexor muscles and decided not to take it," added Totti.
