U.S.A 1 - 0 Switzerland
(Soccer365.com) The United States men’s national team ended their five game slide and defeated Switzerland 1-0 at St. Jakob's Park in Basel. Michael Bradley scored the lone goal in the 86th minute from 6 yards out.
The goal came off some good team work but was sloppy very much like the rain soaked pitch the two teams were playing on.
The scoring play started when second half substitute Freddy Adu made a wise decision to make the easy pass out wide to another substitute Danny Szetela. The Racing Santander midfielder put a dangerous cross in the box where Clint Dempsey ran on at the penalty spot and kneed the ball over a Swiss defender. Bradley won the foot race to the lose ball to knock it past a charging Pascal Zuberbühler from just inside the 6 yard box.
The Red, White and Blue had several other chances, largely due to the work from Adu, but were unable to add an insurance goal.
Marcus Hahnemann and Brad Guzan combined for the shut out.
Despite the result, the U.S. looked out of sync for much of the match. Bob Bradley’s side relied too heavily on long balls to either Taylor Twellman and Clint Dempsey which resulted in neither getting many good looks.
The biggest problem for the U.S. throughout the match was the lack of build up in the midfield. Bradley and first time cap winner Maurice Edu were invisible in central midfield for large portions of the match.
While there were some issues, Bradley continues to build his player pool of experience internationals for World Cup qualifying set to start in 2008. In addition to Edu and Szetela, Robbie Finley earned his first cap with the senior national team.
The U.S. will close out their 2007 campaign against South Africa as part of the Nelson Mandela Challenge Cup on November 17 in Johannesburg.
