Oliver Kahn't keep his mouth shut

(Soccer365.com) Bayern Munich midfielder Franck Ribery has admitted he was surprised by team-mate Oliver Kahn's criticism of him last week.

Kahn accused Ribery and fellow summer arrival Luca Toni of failing to understand what is required of players at a club like Bayern, saying it "was different to being at clubs like Marseille [Ribery] or Fiorentina [Toni]".

Ribery, speaking after collecting the 2007 French Footballer of the Year award on Sunday, believes Kahn should have made his feelings known in the dressing-room and not through the media.

"He is the only person to have [this view]. Lots of people have seen what I have done since the start of the season," Ribery said. "I would have preferred him to say that to me face to face rather than via the papers.

"I was surprised by the way it came out. Bayern is a big club, but he should respect clubs like Marseille and Fiorentina."

He added: "Things have calmed down now, though."

Kahn was suspended by the club for Saturday's goalless draw at Hertha Berlin, a result that ensured Bayern stay top of the Bundesliga on goal difference from Werder Bremen heading into the winter break.

The goalkeeper was also fined for his outburst and has since apologised for his comments.
