Rangers Run Riot Over Celtic

(Soccer365.com) An inspired performance saw Rangers move top of the Scottish Premier League standings as they beat Celtic 4-2 in the first Old Firm derby of the new campaign at Parkhead on Sunday, which saw both teams go down to 10 men.

Neither side were able to stamp their authority during the opening 30 minutes, but the game burst into life shortly after the half-hour mark as Daniel Cousin produced a breath-taking run into the box, and after leaving his defender for dead he coolly out-foxed Artur Boruc to slot home from a tight angle.

But the lead lasted just two minutes as the Hoops took control of the ball in the middle of the park, and some quick passing allowed Georgios Samaras space, and the striker made no mistake to send his shot past Allan McGregor and into the back of the net.

The second-half began the way the first had ended, and Walter Smith's men regained the lead within seven minutes of the restart as Kenny Miller produced a text-book volley at the far-post to silence the Celtic Park-faithful.

The goal seemed to knock the stuffing out of the Celtic players, but Rangers remained as sharp as ever and were soon 3-1 up as Pedro Mendes unleashed an incredible 25-yard drive which bulged the back of the net before the Bhoys 'keeper even had a chance to see it.

But the afternoon was slightly marred as Cousin turned from hero to villain and was given his marching orders for a second bookable offence, and just one minute later Celtic were also down to 10-men as Jan Vennegoor of Hesselink was shown a straight red card for violent conduct.

The commotion seemed to totally unsettle Boruc, and after failing to deal with a routine catch he fumbled the ball and Miller was on hand to sneak home his second and Rangers' fourth.

The hosts did manage to pull a late goal back through Shunsuke Nakamura, but it would prove only a consolation.

Lampard: Robinho will light up league

(Soccer365.com) Blues chief executive Peter Kenyon is confident of wrapping up the deal for the 24-year-old Brazilian, with Chelsea's official website even taking orders for kits with Robinho's name printed and the number 'to be confirmed'.

This is despite Real president Ramon Calderon insisting "the coach and the sports director want the player to stay and I am sure he will".

Lampard told Chelsea's official website: "He is a fantastic player, I saw a lot of him last season watching the Spanish games. He had a very good season until he got injured and it broke his season up a bit.

"He has great flair, and something that would be nice to bring into our team. We have flair players already but he is another option and he could light up the league.

"He will have to get used to it because it is different to Spain, but he showed he is a world-class player both at Madrid and for Brazil, and world-class players adapt."

Rafa promises Liverpool improvement

(Soccer365.com) The Anfield boss accepts that although his side are still unbeaten after four games this term - and have only conceded one goal - they have not been firing on all cylinders.

That was underlined by the Champions League qualifying tie with Standard Liege. Liverpool should have lost the first leg in Belgium, and laboured to a 1-0 extra-time win yesterday to secure their passage into the group phase for the fifth season in succession under Benitez.

Benitez knows Liverpool were close to elimination during both legs of the tie, a situation that would have instantly created a severe cash crisis at Anfield.

With them facing interest payments of £30million a year on debt loaded onto the club by owners Tom Hicks and George Gillett, Liverpool's ability to find that outlay would have been severely jeopardised by European failure.

Now Benitez has to ensure they get past the group stage and secure passage to a UEFA cash pot that should bring them between £20million and £30million, depending on how far they go in the competition.

Two finals and a semi-final in the previous four seasons have seen the club rewarded by more than £100million by UEFA.

Benitez believes the teething problems of Liverpool's season so far will be ironed out by the opening group match on September 16/17.

Benitez says: "We will get better little by little, by the time the group games come around, we will be ready.

"It is not easy when you have the pre-season we have had. When sometimes you are missing 10 players for a variety of reasons, internationals or the Olympics.

"Then you have two or three players returning one week, then the next week there are more. (Fernando) Torres, (Alvaro) Arbeloa, (Jose) Reina and (Xabi) Alonso all returned late for training because of Euro 2008. Then there were three returning from the Olympics; (Ryan) Babel first, then Lucas, then (Javier) Mascherano.

"But now we have seen Mascherano win the gold medal and Liverpool have reached the Champions League group stage. So it has all been very positive in the end.

"Now we have the players back and the confidence that we need to be successful this season."

He added: "We will continue to improve, we will be completely ready as a team when the group stages start.

"Up until now we have been preparing for every game missing four or five players each time.

"Now, after a few players have returned, we will improve with each match. Little by little we will improve to be ready for the big matches that will come."

Liverpool chief executive Rick Parry has been in Barcelona for the past two days completing the deal that will bring Espanyol's winger Albert Riera to the club for a fee of around £9million.

Benitez says: "We are working to try to improve the squad. It is not easy to bring in too many players at this stage with the window coming to an end. Maybe just the one will be all we can manage.

"We have been working and trying to improve the squad, without thinking of the money from the Champions League.

"We can progress if we have options, but now with this money maybe it will be easier.

"For us it is important to be playing for trophies, but of course the money is important. But if you can win games like this it gives you the opportunity for more money, we understand that."

Benitez will hope to have skipper Steven Gerrard back for the opening group game, the midfielder having had a minor groin operation today that will rule him out for 10-15 days.

Gerrard was just relieved to have got past Liege. He said: "It was a very tough game and you have to give them credit.

"They have made it difficult for us over two legs but we have managed to scrape through. When times are hard it is about sticking together, showing character and trying to grind wins out and that is what we are managing to do."

Match-winner Dirk Kuyt agrees. He said: "The most important thing is that we are through. We did not give our best performance but kept working really hard until the end and I am really happy with another goal in Europe.

"We wanted to play in the Champions League because we know how good it can be. We have been in a final and a semi-final over recent years and we want more.

"First we had to win the qualifier and it was a tough game. We believed in ourselves and even though it was not our best performance, we always know we have the quality to score."

Goalkeeper Reina summed up the mood in the camp, saying: "We need to improve. Obviously we are not playing at our best but so long as we play ugly and keep winning, I don't mind."

Arsenal Cruise Through In Europe

(Soccer365.com) Arsenal bounced back from their defeat at the weekend to ensure their qualification for the Champions League group phase as they defeated FC Twente 4-0 at the Emirates Stadium on Wednesday.

It was a 6-0 aggregate thrashing for the Gunners over former former England manager Steve McClaren's team.

Also advancing easily were Atlético Madrid, Fenerbahçe, Fiorentina, Marseille. Meanwhile, Liverpool need 120 minutes to defeat Standard Liege 1-0 on a goal by Dirk Kuyt in the 118th minute.

Milan's Kaka Not Moving To Chelsea

(Soccer365.com) Brazilian playmaker Kaka is happy at the AC Milan and says he intends to stay with the team as long as they share his objectives.

All summer Kaka has been linked with a big-money move to Chelsea, but the 26-year-old says he is happy at the San Siro.

Kaka said: "Me going to Chelsea? I'm staying as a Rossoneri player.

"I should help Milan to win the trophies we're up for this season. The club have made some great signings and Sheva will fit in without any problems.

"I can't say (if I've been included in the Shevchenko deal), because if someone has promised me to (Chelsea owner Roman) Abramovich, it wasn't me.

"I've always said I'm happy at Milan and as long as my aims remain the same as Milan's I'll stay here. Until now it's always been that way.

"My goal is to win, Milan's is too. As long as we are like that, I'll remain at Milan."

Gold Medal Aguero Back For Atletico

(Soccer365.com) Atletico Madrid welcome back star striker Sergio Aguero for Wednesday's vital Champions League clash against Schalke, but the diminutive Argentinian is warning against pinning too much hope on his return.

Atletico have an uphill battle if they are to grace the Champions League group stages after suffering a 1-0 defeat to last season's quarter-finals Schalke in the away leg of their third qualifying round tie.

Aguero was missing for that match due to his Olympic commitments but the 20-year-old will be available to play in this week's return meeting after winning gold in Beijing.

Hopes are high in Madrid that Aguero, who struck 18 league goals for Atletico last season, will be able to turn the tie round for the Rojiblancos, but the striker does not want to be seen as the man with all the answers.

"No, I'm not the savior," he said after landing in Madrid. "I'm going to give my all, but this is achieved by a team. If things go well for me it will be because I've had the support of my team-mates.

"The Vicente Calderon is going to be full and I hope that our fans don't stop supporting us until the end to help us achieve our goal."

Aguero, who insists he will be in tip-top shape despite his Olympic adventure, admits it is unlikely to be comfortable for Atletico though, saying of Schalke: "They're a very tough opponent because all German teams are strong.

"It's not going to be easy to eliminate them at all, but we have to stay calm and be confident that we can get the win."

Shevchenko completes Milan return

(Soccer365.com) The Ukraine forward touched down in Italy late on Sunday night after Chelsea agreed terms with the Serie A side on Saturday on a deal to take Shevchenko back to Milan - the club he represented for seven seasons between 1999 and 2006.

The deal was only awaiting a medical but a Milan spokesman confirmed on Monday evening that the 31-year-old had come through it successfully.

Shevchenko endured a difficult two years in London following a big-money transfer from the Rossoneri, finding the net just nine times in two Premier League campaigns.

But after completing his return to the Italian side - where he remains the club's second all-time top goalscorer - the forward was quick to thank the Chelsea followers for their support.

"I'm so very happy to be here," he told the Milan website.

"At this very special moment for me, I really want to send a message to the Chelsea fans who in the past two years have always made me feel their support.

"A heartfelt thank you for that."

Shevchenko's delight to be back in Milan has been shared by Rossoneri playing staff and directors alike.

Ronaldinho, Clarence Seedorf and Kakha Kaladze have all spoken of their glee at the move, while star player Kaka revealed today he was "extra happy that Sheva has returned".

Vice-president Adriano Galliani also expressed his joy at seeing the Ukrainian back among the squad, and insists his return was not solely due to club owner Silvio Berlusconi's close relationship with the player.

"This is a family and we're all happy," he told Gazzetta dello Sport.

"It's not true that only Silvio Berlusconi insisted that Andriy return. I've put my weight behind the cause too and I'm happy that in the end we've succeeded in bringing him home."

Shevchenko is set to train individually before joining up with the rest of the squad when they return from having played a friendly in Spain.

It is still uncertain which number the former Milan number seven will wear, although the current occupant of Shevchenko's old shirt - Alexandre Pato - has already revealed he is willing to give up the number.

"We'll talk about it," Galliani said. "Maybe our baby (Pato) will give Sheva his number seven back, but it's not fair to ask him."

On the matter, Shevchenko himself added: "That's nice of Pato to say that, but as far as I'm concerned number 76 would do fine too, or 70 or 77.

"For me it's just enough that the number's on a Milan shirt."

Chelsea Ride Early Deco Strike

(Soccer365.com) Deco continued his fine start to life in the Premier League but Chelsea failed to match their first-day performance in a 1-0 win at Wigan.

The Portugal midfielder lashed home a free-kick in the third minute to hand the Blues three points against a resilient Latics side at the JJB Stadium.

Luiz Felipe Scolari's men were a shadow of the side that romped to a 4-0 victory over Portsmouth in last weekend's opener, but with two wins from two the Brazilian coach has already stolen a march on title rivals Arsenal and Manchester United.

Wigan were forced into a late change after goalkeeper Chris Kirkland injured his back in the pre-match warm-up.

Kirkland's late withdrawal saw Mike Pollitt promoted to the starting XI, while Titus Bramble was also handed a recall in place of key defender Paul Scharner who was not in the squad.

An early mix-up between Deco and Michael Ballack gave the hosts a chance to break clear but Wilson Palacios lacked support and the danger soon passed.

It was the only chance Wigan got before former Barcelona star Deco fired Chelsea in front with an inch-perfect free-kick.

Lee Cattermole was penalised just outside the box and, with just three minutes on the clock, Deco curled the ball past a helpless Pollitt.

To their credit, the Latics hit back hard. First Palacios and then Amr Zaki forced Petr Cech into smart saves at his near post, while Antonio Valencia was stretched just too far as he attempted to strike a loose ball from 18 yards.

The match continued at breakneck speed - a classic Premier League match for the watching Fabio Capello - with Jose Bosingwa creating and conceding chances down Chelsea's right flank.

Blues skipper John Terry was shown a yellow card in the 14th minute for impeding Emile Heskey and Wigan continued to threaten, with a speculative Cattermole effort briefly worrying Cech in the away goal.

Newly-crowned England skipper Terry went close himself after 17 minutes, heading over from six yards from a Frank Lampard corner.

Chelsea were looking uncomfortable at the back and needed a somewhat cynical foul by Bosingwa to prevent another Wigan counter in the 22nd minute.

Zaki was next to test Cech, forcing a good save after some fine build-up play from Cattermole and an unusually advanced Emmerson Boyce.

Mario Melchiot, Wigan's skipper and a former Chelsea player, was also a threat, overlapping busily down the right and spraying an impressive array of passes.

The Dutchman was called into action in defence after 35 minutes, heading clear a dangerous-looking Nicolas Anelka cross to deny Ballack a tap-in.

Anelka was then denied a penalty after crashing to the turf with Boyce and Melchiot in attendance.

A Terry error gave Wigan one more chance to go level before the break but Heskey was unable to fashion a shooting chance from Zaki's clever through-ball.

Wigan boss Steve Bruce used the break to restructure, replacing an off-colour Jason Koumas with winger Daniel de Ridder.

Chelsea started the second half as nervily as they finished the first - a breakdown in communication between Ricardo Carvalho and Cech almost gifting the hosts the softest of chances.

There was room for improvement in their forward play too, Anelka and Ashley Cole conspiring to lose possession on the edge of the area after an incisive Deco breakaway.

Joe Cole, putting in one of his less effective displays, was replaced before the hour mark with Salomon Kalou, now back from the Olympics, getting a first chance to impress Scolari.

Frank Lampard attempted to rouse Chelsea, scooping a high pass down the centre channel where Anelka, also struggling to make an impact, was jostled off the ball.

Michael Essien, having spent much of the afternoon anchoring the midfield, then had the half's first attempt on goal, screwing a low shot to Pollitt's right.

At last Chelsea started to create space and Wigan had Cattermole to thank for a superb saving tackle on the six-yard line in the 69th minute.

Carvalho was cautioned for a petulant kick at Zaki after 73 minutes but, in stark contrast to Deco, De Ridder's set-piece delivery was dismal.

Indeed, it neatly summarised the difference between the sides.

The increasingly impressive Zaki then carved his way between Bosingwa and Essien, earning a corner with an exhilarating run.

He followed up 10 minutes from time with a tantalising left-wing cross which just evaded Heskey and resulted in a tame effort from De Ridder.

Substitute Olivier Kapo had Wigan's best chance late on, making Cech dive full stretch to divert a skidding shot just wide of the post.

U.S. WNT Claim Olympic Gold

(Soccer365.com) The United States women’s national team defeated Brazil 1-0 in extra time on Thursday to win the Olympic gold medal.

Carli Lloyd blasted a left footed shot underneath Brazilian goalkeeper Barbara in the in the 96th minute and the defense held off a final push from Brazil for the win.

The goal capped off a great sequence from the Red, White and Blue in tight quarters. Second half substitute Lauren Cheney feed the ball to Lloyd 25 yards from goal. The midfielder while turning with the ball passed it to Amy Rodriguez at the top of the box who then returned the ball to a breaking Lloyd. With a burst of speed Lloyd passed one Brazilian defender and sent her dipping shot from the top of the underneath a diving Barbara.

With a goal deficit, Brazil turned up the pressure. Marta had a great opportunity in the 102 minute when she took advantage of a U.S. giveaway deep in their end but her shot was blocked by the U.S. defense.

Marta almost leveled again in the 114th minute off a free kick. The Brazilian forward’s perfectly placed free kick from 25 yards out forced U.S. goalkeeper Hope Solo to stay on her line to defend against potential headers allowed the ball to bounce in the 6 yard box and only narrowly bounce wide.

With both sides desperately tired, Lloyd looked to have an insurance goal in the 117th minute but her shot beat Barbara but knocked off the goal post.

Solo had a solid game in goal and was had a huge save to give the U.S. a chance. In the 72nd minute, Marta beat two U.S. defenders in the box and put a hard shot on goal from 8 yards out but Solo quickly got her up to block the goal bound ball.

Zenit close door on Arshavin sale

Spurs had already turned their attentions away from the player who impressed for Russia at Euro 2008, having failed to agree a fee with Zenit for the 27-year-old playmaker.

Zenit gave Tottenham until Monday of this week to meet their demands and have now pulled the plug on the proposed deal.

They have stated on their club website that because "the uncertainty of the situation does not make it possible for the club to seek out a replacement for Andrei, Zenit consider the question of the transfer of the player to Tottenham closed".

Milan claim Shevchenko return is 'close'

(Soccer365.com) The Ukraine striker has endured two disappointing years at Stamford Bridge following a big-money move from Milan.

Reports suggest Shevchenko could return to Milan in what would initially be a season-long loan deal following a meeting between former club president Silvio Berlusconi and Chelsea owner Roman Abramovich in Sardinia last Thursday.

The Italian press claim the deal will be finalized on Thursday or at the latest 24 hours later and Ramaccioni agrees.

"Shevchenko in the Rossoneri shirt? There really isn't much more to be done," he told Radio Goal. "We are close to the end of the deal and I hope that these little things that have to be fulfilled are done as soon as possible.

"I would be extremely delighted if Shevchenko returns to Milan and I am ready to embrace the Ukraine champion again, for us it's about a return home."

Shevchenko is AC Milan's second-most prolific goalscorer of all-time having scored 127 goals in 208 games during a seven-year career.

Blanco Calls For Mexico GK Change

(Soccer365.com) Though enjoying his first call-up since last spring's Copa America, Mexico playamker Cuauhtemoc Blanco has stirred things up by suggesting that it was time for apprentice keeper Guillermo Ochoa to take over for old master Oswaldo Sanchez.

The 23-year old Ochoa - 12 years younger than his Santos counterpart - has been patiently lying in wait since before World Cup 2006.

"(Ochoa) should be starting," former teammate Blanco told the Chicago Tribune. "He's the best goalkeeper on the team, he's shown it at (Club) America."

El Tri will be making their debut under new boss Sven-Goran Eriksson when they welcome CONCACAF World Cup 2010 Qualifying foe Honduras to Azteca on Wednesday night.

Arena Takes Helm At Galaxy

Bruce Arena was been named General Manager and Head Coach of the Los Angeles Galaxy today.

Arena, who becomes the seventh coach in club history, will oversee all of the club's soccer operations, including the first team, reserve and academy teams and youth development.

“While it has been a very difficult week, I believe the end result is a very positive step forward for the Galaxy,” said Timothy J. Leiweke, President & CEO AEG. “Bruce is the best coach for the Galaxy and certainly one of the best coaches in the history of the league. I am impressed with his passion, desire and focus and believe that his recent experiences with the U.S. National Team and Red Bulls have prepared and motivated him for this next challenge.”

“We have always felt that the Galaxy should aspire to be the club that sets the pace and tone in Major League Soccer,” Leiweke added. “I believe Bruce sees it the same way and will put us back in that position.”

The all-time winningest coach in U.S. National Team history, Arena led the U.S. to the FIFA World Cup twice, including a quarterfinal berth in 2002 in Japan/Korea. Arena took over as head coach in November 1998 and was in charge for nearly eight years, collecting a 71-30-29 all-time record.

"I am very excited to assume this position with the Los Angeles Galaxy," said Arena. "I realize we have a lot of work ahead of us and I am optimistic that with the support of management, our coaching staff and the players, we will move forward to positioning this team to qualify for this season's MLS playoffs. US Women Rally To Reach Olympic Final

Angela Hucles scored twice and Lori Chalupny and Heather O’Reilly each scored once as the U.S. advanced to the gold medal match with a 4-2 victory against Japan.

Since women’s soccer was added to the Olympic program in 1996, the U.S. is the only team that has advanced to all four Olympic Finals, and for the second consecutive time will play Brazil with the gold medal on the line. The U.S. defeated Brazil 2-1 in Athens to win their second gold medal.

Japan was dangerous from the start, forcing Hope Solo to make the save on a header off a corner kick in the fifth minute, and 11 minutes later getting the first goal of the game on a corner from the right side. The out-swinger was headed up in the middle of the penalty area and bounced out to the right side for Yukari Kinga. Kinga drove a low ball back into the center where Shinobu Ohno was all alone to settle and drive it under Solo.

The U.S. wasn’t without chances early. O’Reilly and Chalupny, both catalysts on the first two U.S. goals, each broke through into the area in the first 15 minutes. O’Reilly was muscled to the ground without a call, and Chalupny’s effort went wide.

Solo was again called to action in the 21st minute, diving to her left to palm away a low shot from 19 yards off the foot of Yuki Nagasato.

Later it was Solo that started the play that created the first U.S. goal in the 41st minute. A long goal kick from the U.S. goalkeeper bounced once before a Japan defender was forced to play a clearance wide right in the path of O’Reilly. She dribbled to the endline past Kyoko Yano and cut a low cross back to the top of the six yard box, past a sliding Amy Rodriguez and through the dummy of Lindsay Tarpley where Hucles tapped it into the open goal with her left.

Before halftime the U.S. took the lead as Chalupny finished a play that started with possession in the back for the U.S., and then Kate Markgraf played the ball forward to Carli Lloyd. She found Rodriguez checking back, who turned and played Chalupny free up the left wing. She cut back around the defender and hit a 17-yard rocket that hit the roof of the net.

In the second half, except for a stoppage time goal from Japan it was all USA as the defending gold medalists out-shot Japan 13-6 while adding two more goals.

In the 70th minute, O’Reilly scored her second improbable goal from distance during the Olympics. She received a throw in from Heather Mitts from deep on the right wing, and immediately hit the ball with the top of her left foot from well outside the penalty area that dropped into the goal over a helpless Miho Fukumoto.

Ten minutes later, Hucles scored her second of the game and her team-leading fourth of the Olympics on a skillful chip from a tight angle. Hucles dropped a corner kick off for O’Reilly, who promptly returned the ball. Hucles dribbled along the right edge of the penalty area before chipping a shot over Fukumoto from just two yards off the endline and one step inside the area. The assist was O’Reilly’s second of the game, and third of the tournament.

Japan would add a goal in stoppage time. A cross from the left win came in for Nagasato, who hit the near post with her shot before squaring the rebound for Eriko Arakawa to tap in from three yards out.

Brazil advanced to the final with a 4-1 victory against Germany, including two goals by Cristiane who is running away with the Golden Boot award with seven goals so far in the Olympics. Marta has also continued to prove why she’s regarded as one of the world’s top players, with four goals – tying her in the running for the silver boot with Hucles. Brazil is tied with the U.S. and Japan for most goals in the tournament, 11, while surrendering four with a 3-0-1 record.

Edu Inks Five-Year Rangers Deal

(Soccer365.com) Rangers have signed USA international Maurice Edu in a £2.6million deal subject to a work permit.

The midfielder, 22, watched Saturday's 2-0 Clydesdale Bank Premier League win over Hearts at Ibrox, before agreeing personal terms.

He has now committed himself to a five-year contract after a deal was struck with Major League Soccer and Rangers are hopeful the transfer can be concluded with a successful application for a work permit.

Edu has six full international caps after coming through the youth ranks. He has now returned to his homeland to prepare for a World Cup qualifier in Guatemala, along with new club-mate DaMarcus Beasley.

The talented youngster came highly recommended by former Celtic and Rangers star Maurice Johnston, who was head coach of Edu's former club, FC Toronto, before assuming the joint role of manager and director of football.

The capture comes hot on the heels of Pedro Mendes' £3million transfer from Portsmouth, with Steven Davis also set to join in a permanent move on Monday.

Huntelaar Agent Slams Madrid Talk

(Soccer365.com) Reports linking Ajax striker Klaas-Jan Huntelaar with a move to Real Madrid have been described as "nonsense" by the player's agent.

Thursday's edition of Spanish sports newspaper Marca claimed the Spanish champions were interested in signing the 25-year-old, while foreign media have gone as far as to suggest Ajax had received a bid of 25million euros for their captain.

But Arnold Oosterveer denied there had been any concrete interest in the striker, telling fcupdate.nl: "No, nothing is going on at the moment. The rumors are nonsense."

Huntelaar, who scored 33 goals in 34 appearances last season, is under contract until summer 2010.

Berbatov Set For United Move

(Soccer365.com) Tottenham striker Dimitar Berbatov is believed to be on the verge of completing a long-anticipated move to Manchester United, with the 28 million pound switch set to be made within the next 24 hours.

Spurs are reportedly willing to sell the player after United made a substantially increased offer for his services, despite it being a couple of million short of the GBP 30 million they had previously insisted on.

It is believed that Spurs softened their attitude towards the sale of Berbatov as they realized it would only be a matter of time before the player left the club.

Spurs manager Juande Ramos will now have three weeks in which to find a replacement before the transfer window closes.

It is understood that the player will be heading to Old Trafford to undergo a medical on Wednesday before putting pen to paper on a four-year deal worth GBP 80,000 a week.

United have their official team photo scheduled to be taken on Friday and hope the Bulgarian will be a member of the squad before then.

Lampard Pens New Chelsea Deal

(Soccer365.com) Chelsea midfielder Frank Lampard has ended months of speculation by signing a new five-year deal at Stamford Bridge.

The England international had been heavily linked with a move away from the Blues in recent months as negotiations over a new deal went on for some time without a successful conclusion.

However, the 30-year-old playmaker has now committed himself to the London outfit effectively for the remainder of his career by penning a deal that will run well into 2013.

The news will come as a major boost to new Chelsea boss Luiz Felipe Scolari who will be looking to topple Manchester United in the Premier League and UEFA Champions League.

Former West Ham star Lampard joined Chelsea in 2001 and has gone on to score 71 goals in 247 appearances for the Blues.

Wenger: Henry Won't Go To Manchester United

(Soccer365.com) Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger says he cannot see his former star striker Thierry Henry joining Manchester United.

Henry joined Spanish giants Barcelona last year for 16million pounds but after a disappointing year for the Frenchmen at Barca, reports have linked the former Arsenal man with a return to the Premiership.

Having struggled to get a regular first team spot at Camp Nou, and often being played out of position, Henry would possibly favor a move to a big club which would allow him to play regularly up front but Wenger does not believe United would be that team.

The Arsenal boss says the only club Henry would be able to play for in the Premiership is the Gunners and says he does not see much truth in the current set of rumors.

"I don't believe in that," Wenger told the club's official website.

"I don't believe Thierry Henry will come back to England. That is my gut feeling.

"But I think if he comes back to England then he comes back to Arsenal."

United seem certain to sign a striker before the start of the season with Dimitar Berbatov supposedly the lead candidate but Henry not completely ruled out yet.

10-Man U.S. Come Up Short vs Nigeria

(Soccer365) Fresh from being ousted from the Summer Olympics with a 2-1 loss to Nigeria, U.S. boss Piotr Nowak was left to ponder what might have been had defender Michael Orozco not been sent off after just three minutes.

The Americans grabbed a late lead slicer through Sacha Kljestan's spot kick and nearly saved their Olympic run when a last minute Charlie Davies header hit the crossbar, but the 2-0 hole was too deep to climb out of.

"It was extremely difficult when the line-up had to be reshaped," Nowak told reporters. "It is a disappointing outcome for us as things could have been so different."

"Only in the last game against Netherlands, we were so close to qualifying for the quarterfinals, and even today it was a close game."

"But those guys are my boys and they played so hard," he added. "For me, they went into battle tonight and they have improved on the international stage."

"In my heart, the boys won the gold medal."

Eto'o To Stay With Barca

(Soccer365.com) Samuel Eto'o will remain with Barcelona this season, coach Pep Guardiola confirmed on Tuesday evening.

Eto'o was one of the three high-profile Barca players who were told their services were no longer required at the Nou Camp, with the others being Ronaldinho and Deco.

But while Ronaldinho has joined AC Milan and Deco at Chelsea, Eto'o has remained with the Catalans and, after impressing in the pre-season, Guardiola has decided the Cameroon international's future lies with Barca.

Barca issued a statement saying: "Josep Guardiola has explained in the press conference for the game against Wisla Krakow that Samuel Eto'o will continue one more season as an azulgrana (Barca player).

"The azulgrana coach has announced that that it is a decision taken 'by the desire of the player and by myself."

Galaxy Fire Gullit and Lalas

Ruud Gullit, the head coach of the Los Angeles Galaxy, will leave the team for personal reasons it was announced today. Galaxy President and GM Alexi Lalas has also been relieved of his duties.

“It is an amicable arrangement and we appreciate and respect the issues that Ruud has highlighted with the club and are very grateful for all the hard work he has contributed while with the organization," said Timothy J. Leiweke, President & CEO AEG, investor/operators of the Galaxy. "Hopefully, he has laid the foundations for future success for the Los Angeles Galaxy."

Gullit, 45, the world-renowned soccer player who was named world player of the year in 1987 and 1989, joined the club in November last year. He commented: "In truth, it has proved a lot more difficult than I anticipated for my family to settle in the area and the club has been very supportive and understanding of my decision. I would like to thank the players and the fans for their fantastic support and I wish the LA Galaxy much success in the future. I would now like to spend some time with my family before considering any other position in football."

Galaxy assistant coach Cobi Jones will serve as the club’s interim head coach while a search for a new head coach is undertaken.

It was also announced that Galaxy President and General Manager Alexi Lalas has been relieved of his duties effective immediately. Lalas joined the team in April 2006 after serving in the same capacity with the New York Red Bulls (formerly MetroStars).

“With Rudd moving on, we believe that this is the right time to make more sweeping changes throughout the organization,” said Leiweke. “Our commitment continues to be focused on not only winning the MLS Cup this and every season but to build a club capable of competing at the international level. This decision is the right one for the organization, the right one for the players and the right one for our fans. We thank Alexi for the tremendous hard work and dedication he brought to his job each and every day.”

Paul Bravo, the Galaxy’s Director of Soccer, will continue in this role overseeing all issues related to the Galaxy’s roster including scouting and evaluating players (collegiate and professional), overseeing the club’s development system and other team administrative functions.

Assistant General Manager Tom Payne will continue to oversee the Galaxy front office, including corporate partnerships, ticket sales, marketing, programming, communications, operations and community development. Payne has been with the organization for six seasons.

ManUtd Retain Community Shield On Penalties

(Soccer365.com) Manchester United beat Portsmouth 3-1 on penalties to retain the Community Shield and get their season off to a winning start.

The regulation 90 minutes ended in a goal-less draw and no extra time was played, and the Portsmouth players were not up to the high-pressure task.

The match started off sluggishly, with both sides still feeling the effects of a long break and intense international pre-season tours.

United had the best chance of the match in the first half, and Darren Fletcher will be thinking about the miss for a long time yet. The Scotland international had the easiest of chances but missed the close range tap in much to everyone at Wembley's surprise.

Pompey also had a chance to break the deadlock in the opening stanza, with striker Jermaine Defoe making a thrilling run down the middle only to scuff the ball wide in the area.

After the break United came out firing and only David James' quick hands kept Pompey from going down a goal. Michael Carrick neatly chipped the ball over the defenders' heads, but James leaped up to tip it onto the bar, after which his team mates cleared it away.

The England stopper was again called into action minutes later when Carlos Tevez made a jinking run into the box. Just as Tevez was about to shoot, James slid off his line to smother the ball with his body.

Regulation time ended 0-0 and they went straight into penalties without extra time. Lassana Diara and Arnold Mvuemba missed their chances at goal, meaning United needed only Giggs, Tevez and Carrick's strikes to win.

U.S. Allow Late Oranje Equalizer

The U.S. Men’s Olympic Soccer team was just minutes away from clinching a spot in the knockout stage after two games, but a late equalizer from the Netherlands shocked the U.S. for a 2-2 tie.

The Netherlands took command early on a goal by Liverpool’s Ryan Babel, but the U.S. answered in the second half with a 64th minute goal by Sacha Kljestan and took the lead when Jozy Altidore struck in the 72nd.

However, in the third of three minutes of added time to the second half, Netherlands substitute Gerald Sibon drove a low free kick under the U.S. wall from 21 yards out to tie the game.

"It's tough," said U.S. head coach Peter Nowak. "As I told the guys in the locker room, that's the way the game goes sometimes. Not too many people gave us a chance tonight against the European champions, but we were very close to beating them. We have unfinished business. Going into the game with Nigeria, any result other than a loss, and we will pass into the quarterfinals."

The U.S. needs a win or tie in their final match of Group B vs. Nigeria on Wednesday.

Also for the U.S, Freddy Adu and Michael Bradley earned their second yellow cards of the tournament and will miss the Nigeria match.

Nowak started the same lineup as the first match, with Robbie Rogers switching to the right and Stuart Holden switching to the left.

The Netherlands got things going in the 16th minute. Jonathan de Guzman caught up with a pass near the end line on the right and chiped a touch cross to the top of the six yard box where Ryan Babel headed it on goal. U.S. goalkeeper Brad Guzan dropped to the ground to make the save, but the rebound fell right back to Babel, who in the middle of three U.S. defenders who were late to converge, calmly slotted a high shot into the back of the net.

The first U.S. chance of the match didn’t come until the 27th minute after the U.S. shifted formations, moving Freddy Adu to right midfield, Rogers moving back to the left and Holden sliding into the middle of the field. Adu received the ball just into the U.S. half and then went on a long dribbling run, twice faking a shot at the top of the 18-yard box before getting space on the left side of the area and blasting a shot high.

Adu again created a dangerous chance for the U.S. in the 35th minute when he drew a foul just outside the penalty area. The U.S. set up with three players over the ball, and Kljestan touched the ball for Michael Bradley who drilled his low shot into a charging wall.

In the 40th minute, the U.S. forced Dutch goalkeeper Kenneth Vermeer into action for the first time as a great build up out of the back resulted in the best chance of the match to this point for the U.S. Defender Michael Parkhurst started things, playing out of pressure to Bradley who made a great turn. He played it right for Adu who redirected the ball into Marvell Wynne’s path on the overlap. Wynne dribbled up the right wing and crossed in front of the back line to Brian McBride, who put a bouncing pass into the path of Holden who first-timed a lazer onto goal that Vermeer punched wide. Robbie Rogers hit the rebound low toward the near post, but that effort was also saved.

The Dutch came out of halftime with a chance on a free kick from deep on their right wing. Real Madrid’s Roy Drenthe curled the free kick to outside of the far post where Hedwiges Maduro gets away from Bradley for a free header that goes wide into side netting.

The U.S. responded with a scoring chance of their own three minutes later. A foul 40 yards from goal gave the U.S. a free kick that Holden lofted into the area to McBride, who rose to flick a header that Vermeer tipped over his crossbar.

The U.S. leveled the score and took the momentum in the 64th minute on Kljestan’s goal. He started the play with space on the right side at midfield. He brought the ball inside playing a quick one-two with Holden and then a one-two with Adu, getting the ball back just outside of the area. Kljestan cut with the ball into the middle, kept possession after a challenge from a defender, and blasted a right-footed shot into the back of the net as Vermeer got a touch on the ball.

The second U.S. goal was opportunistic, coming during a scramble in front of the Dutch goal in the 72nd minute. The ball bounced out to Bradley, who got a touch playing it forward with his back to goal. Two Netherlands defenders were unable to clear, and the ball fell wide left to Michael Orzoco. Orozco took a settling touch and drove a low cross that deflected slightly off Calvin Jong-a-Pin as Altidore crashed and put it in the center of the net off his leg.

The U.S. advantage led the Netherlands to go right to the bench, bringing in forwards Roy Makaay and Sibon in the 75th minute.

The U.S. was successful fending off the Dutch attack for much of the remainder of the match, with Guzan keeping command of his area and the U.S. back line winning most of the air battles.

In the 78th minute, Adu earned a yellow card – his second of the tournament – for a challenge with Vermeer in which the U.S. forward stuck a foot in and hit the goalkeeper in the hand and forehead. He will miss the next match.

The U.S. had a chance to put the game away in the 89th minute, with Holden still having enough gas in the tank for a half-field run which resulted in a shot wide. Kljestan made the run along with Holden and was open in front of goal, but Holden couldn’t find him.

In stoppage time, Bradley earned a yellow card for wasting time on a restart and will also miss the next match.

The Netherlands, one of the tournament favorites after winning the UEFA Under-21 Championship, earned one final opportunity after Holden fouled Sibon just outside of the penalty area, earning a yellow card. Sibon stepped up and drove the free kick under the U.S. wall that jumped in unison and past Guzan to stun the U.S.

In the other Group B match, Nigeria topped Japan 2-1. Going into the final day, the U.S. is on top of the group on a tiebreaker with four points. Nigeria also has four points, while the Netherlands is in third place with two points, and Japan is last with no points.

Chelsea In Kaka Talks - Agent

(Soccer365.com) Chelsea are reportedly holding talks with AC Milan over a headline-grabbing summer swoop for Kaka.

The Brazil international has been intensely linked with the Blues for most of the off-season following the appointment of compatriot Luiz Felipe Scolari at the helm of Stamford Bridge.

Milan have furiously insisted their star player is not for sale, but reports suggest a 100million euros (78million pounds) deal could yet be brokered between the two clubs before the close of the transfer window.

Kaka, whose current deal at the San Siro runs until 2012, is said to have been left frustrated with the Rossoneri after they refused to allow him to compete in the 2008 Beijing Olympics.

And now the playmaker's agent, Diogo Kotscho, has come out saying the two clubs are still embroiled in talks.

He said: "I spoke with Kaka yesterday (Saturday). We know that the clubs are talking about the transfer, although they have not reached a conclusion yet.

"I think an August transfer is still a possibility, though Kaka will only talk about that when they do a deal.

"He is waiting for a deal and then he will start to negotiate with Chelsea.

"Normally, Milan do not sell their best players. We think they like the proposal, but it is not so easy for them to accept it.

"For now we must just wait and see."

Chelsea Bid For Robinho

(Soccer365.com) Reports suggest Chelsea have lodged a GBP 19.7 million bid for Real Madrid forward Robinho.

Blues manager Luiz Felipe Scolari has made no secret of his desire to link up with his Brazilian compatriot and the London outfit have now made an offer for the player.

Chelsea chief executive Peter Kenyon openly expressed the club's interest in the player, while Robinho refused to rule out a Stamford Bridge move earlier this week.

The Spanish giants have continually expressed their desire to keep Robinho but the recent signing of Rafael van der Vaart gives them ample cover in the South American's position.

Speculation suggests Robinho could have been unsettled over talk that he could be included in Madrid's bid for Cristiano Ronaldo, the deal which has now been put off.

Chelsea revealed earlier this month that Robinho would be their final summer signing if it had to prove successful.

US Downs Japan 1-0

(Soccer365.com) The USMNT got the three points they came for against Japan in Tianjin on Thursday, but the 1-0 win was not without is fair share of worrying moments.

by Greg Seltzer for Soccer365

By the largely even contest was over, American fans were handed another double present when Nigeria and the Netherlands duked it out in a scoreless draw.

And yet, one has to wonder if a one-goal victory over Japan should still be enough to satisfy, especially considering that the other two group giants are still laying in wait with scopes firmly fixed on the tabletop 'Nats.

The Star Spangled boys were workmanlike, as one might expect from this regime. Being able to score first vindicated the choice of tactics because it allowed the players to organically protect. However, it would likely behoove coach Piotr Nowak and his staff to come up with a little more meat for Sunday's Oranje game plan.

There are reasons why American teams regularly lose to the Netherlands at all levels. Of course, there is the talent gap, but that is closing - especially in the youth ranks. Now is the time to minimize the divide further by throwing some brave wrinkles into the system and playing some football.

U.S. v Japan Player Ratings

Brad Guzan (6.5) - Always alert and always using his size, the new Aston Villa man did not disappoint in several sticky situations.

Marvell Wynne (6) - He generally kept his side clean and hustled to the middle to make a big play or two, but there wasn't much going forward.

Maurice Edu (6.5) - The converted midfielder played tough in the middle of defense and moved the ball out well. He sure did get lucky on that late "was it or wasn't it" penalty decision. It looked like one, but the ref said it wasn't, so I'm not going to mark him down for it.

Michael Parkhurst (5) - Not the best day from the Revs star, who was pulled out of position and lost running markers too often.

Michael Orozco (4.5) - Don't get me wrong, I like this kid. He's very strong in one-on-one situations, but had a great deal of trouble corralling Japan winger Atsuto Uchida when the ball was on the move - as one might expect when a center back goes wide. Orozco also failed to link with his own winger in attack.

Michael Bradley (6) - The hot transfer topic was easily the best U.S. player in the first half, but faded a touch after they took the lead. His touch and movement of the ball were largely splendid.

Sacha Kljestan (5) - The Chivas USA ace did well going forward in the first half, but contributed to some defensive breakdowns after intermission. It seems to me that having him and Bradley both on is redundant in this formation.

Robbie Rogers (5) - The Crew speedster wasn't involved a great deal, but that's not entirely his fault. When given the chance, he took defenders on heartily, only to cross poorly.

Freddy Adu (6) - He didn't spur many chances, and yet, he was the one guy willing to test central defenders and fire from distance.

Brian McBride (5.5) - See Robbie Rogers, sentence one. Can somebody please get this guy involved in the offense doing something other than holding up the ball with his back to goal?

FIFA Down Over Olympics Ruling

(Soccer365.com) FIFA described a ruling from the Court of Arbitration for Sport allowing clubs to pull their players out of the Olympics as "disappointing" and urged clubs to allow their players to compete in Beijing.

The CAS ruled on Wednesday in favour of Barcelona, Werder Bremen and Schalke, stating that clubs could not be forced to release their players as the Olympics do not appear on FIFA's calendar.

FIFA had insisted that it was "mandatory" for clubs to release players aged 23 and under for the tournament.

In a statement Wednesday, FIFA said it would respect the CAS ruling.

"FIFA is surprised and disappointed by this decision, but we respect it," FIFA president Sepp Blatter said. "Nevertheless, I appeal to the clubs: 'Let your players take part in the Olympic Games! It would be an act of solidarity in perfect harmony with the Olympic spirit. It would be wonderful for the players, for the fans and for the game itself'."

CAS found that FIFA's position was based on custom rather than law, meaning clubs could not be forced to release their players.

"The Olympic Football Tournament Beijing 2008 is not included in the Co-ordinated Match Calendar and there is no specific decision of the FIFA Executive Committee establishing the obligation for the clubs to release players under 23 for this tournament," the CAS ruling said.

"The requirements to justify a legal obligation of clubs to release their players for the Football Tournament Beijing 2008 on the basis of customary law are not met."

Blatter added that he had made a direct appeal to the clubs involved to allow the three players at the heart of the dispute - Barca's Argentinian playmaker Lionel Messi, Schalke's Brazilian defender Rafinha, and Werder Bremen's Brazil midfielder Diego - to compete.

The three clubs made the appeal as they do not want the players to miss the start of the season.

The Bundesliga season in Germany begins before the conclusion of the Olympics and Schalke will also play a Champions League qualifier.

Barcelona will have also have a Champions League qualifier to play before the Olympics conclude.

While the CAS ruling overturns the decision delivered by a FIFA-appointed judge last week, Blatter insisted that FIFA's position has not changed.

"The Olympic Football Tournaments are a unique opportunity for a player as they are high-level competitions that give everyone involved - most notably young players - the chance to gain international experience that will stand them in good stead for the future," he said.

"It stands to reason, therefore, that it is not only the player and his national team who can benefit from such an experience, but also his club.

"I regret that the CAS has not taken the Olympic spirit into consideration."

While the three clubs who made the appeal can be expected to pull their players out, it appears unlikely that any others will be withdrawn as they have travelled with the permission of their clubs with many such as Belgium's Vincent Kompany cutting deals to allow them to play.

FIFA's statement concluded: "FIFA wishes to thank all those clubs who have released their players for the competition and shown great solidarity and Olympic spirit in doing so."

In its statement, the CAS stated that it hoped the decision would not cause major disruption to the tournament.

"In view of FIFA's recommendation made to the clubs to release their players as well as of the Olympic spirit, the CAS call upon the good will and good sense of FIFA and the clubs to find a reasonable solution with regard to players who wish to represent their country in the Olympic Games," the statement said.

The format of the Olympic tournament is now expected to be reviewed before the 2012 Olympics in London.

FIFA said it would meet with the International Olympic Committee after the conclusion of the Beijing Games to clarify the issue for the future.

The tournament in Beijing begins on Thursday, one day before the official opening ceremony of the Games.

U.S. WNT Stunned By Norway

Norway surprised the U.S. with two goals in the first five minutes and held on for a 2-0 victory in the opening game for each team at the 2008 Olympics at Qinhuangdao Olympic Sports Center Stadium.

Norway’s dream start came in the second minute. After Christie Rampone cleared a long throw in, Norway captain Ane Stangeland Horpestad swung in a long cross from the left wing. Lori Chalupny was in place to challenge for the header, but Hope Solo charged off her line and collided with Chalupny as Leni Larsen Kaurin popped the header over the U.S. players and into the empty net.

Two minutes later Norway scored again. Kate Markgraf played a back pass from right in front of the benches into the middle of the field that was intercepted in stride by Melissa Wiik who dribbled into the area and curved a fantastic shot around Solo just inside the far post.

After a few early build ups and corner kicks, the best chance for the U.S. in the first half came in the 26th minute and was created by Heather O’Reilly. With the U.S. pressing, O’Reilly dribbled to the end line and cut back a pass that deflected to Carli Lloyd. Lloyd touched the ball forward to Angela Hucles who hit a curling shot over the crossbar.

In the second half neither team was able to get much going. Norway primarily sat back to counter attack and created their best chance of the half in the 49th minute on a freekick that Marit Christensen flicked just wide of Solo’s right post.

The U.S. continually attack through the second half, but couldn’t solve Norway’s defense with the final pass. In the 61st minute Natasha Kai put one over the bar from a tight angle and in the 78th Carli Lloyd had a pair of chances denied after her first shot came back to her off a defender.

The two best chances for the U.S. came in stoppage time, when Hucles hit a blast from outside of the area that would have dipped into the net if not for a great leaping save from Erika Skarbøe. A minute later, Lloyd’s strike from nearly the same spot went just wide of the post.

Japan, who earlier tied 2-2 vs. New Zealand, is up next for the U.S. on Saturday, Aug. 9, at 5 a.m. ET live on USA Network and the Olympic Soccer Channel.

Revs Win SuperLiga Title on PK's

The New England Revolution became the first MLS team to earn the title of SuperLiga champion by defeating league rival Houston Dynamo, 6-5 in a penalty shootout.

Nate Jaqua and Kei Kamara gave Houston the lead on two separate occasions – once in regulation and once in extra time – but Steve Ralston and Shalrie Joseph scored equalizers for New England on both occasions, ultimately sending the match to the penalty shootout.

The teams were unable to decide a winner until the eighth round of the shootout, when Revs defender Chris Albright buried his penalty right down the middle and Dynamo midfielder Corey Ashe hit the crossbar with his effort, handing the Revolution the title.

After a host of narrow misses by both sides early in the match, the Dynamo finally made the Revs pay for a defensive miscue in the 18th minute to take the lead. New England’s Amaechi Igwe, who was filling in as a central defender in the absence of Jay Heaps and Michael Parkhurst, failed to properly clear a long Dwayne De Rosario free kick, and the ball fell to Jaqua near the top of the box. The 26-year-old used his first touch to strike a low shot past Reis.

The visitors almost doubled their lead just one minute later after another breakdown in the Revs’ defense, but Brian Ching’s looping shot hit the left post.

The Dynamo almost scored twice more during a hectic two-minute stretch late in the first half, but Albright and Chris Tierney cleared shots by De Rosario and Jaqua off the line, respectively.

The Revs rounded out an action-packed first half by leveling the score at 1-1 in the 41st minute through Ralston. Mauricio Castro received a pass from forward Kenny Mansally on the left wing and cut back towards the middle, then sent a perfectly weighted, lofted cross to the back post. The ball bounced once before Ralston ran onto it and struck a driven volley into the far side netting, just inside the post.

With chances limited throughout the second half and both sides tightening up defensively, 90 minutes of regulation ended with the clubs still even at 1-1 and entered extra time.

In the 98th minute, Houston finally broke the deadlock when second-half substitute Kamara found the back of the net with a header. Ching sent a teasing cross into the box from the right wing, which brought Reis off of his line, but Kamara rose and beat Reis to the ball, heading into the unguarded net.

Four minutes after Houston took the lead, New England evened the score once again, as Joseph scored his third goal in as many games. Ralston’s in-swinging free kick from the left wing was aimed towards the back post, where Joseph cut in front of Dynamo defender Bobby Boswell and directed a bouncing header just inside the far post.

Reis made a crucial save on Ching’s long-range shot in the 120th minute, just seconds before the final whistle sent the match to a penalty shootout.

After missing his own penalty attempt in the shootout and temporarily handing the Dynamo the lead, Reis came up huge with back-to-back saves on De Rosario and Ching to give New England the edge. However, with a chance to seal the victory for the Revs, Khano Smith’s effort was denied by Houston goalkeeper Pat Onstad, and Ricardo Clark scored for Houston to send the shootout into sudden death.

The Revolution’s Jeff Larentowicz and Chris Tierney traded successful attempts with the Dynamo’s Wade Barrett and Kamara before Albright scored and Ashe’s left-footed shot struck the crossbar.

Reis finished with 12 saves, while Onstad stopped five shots for the Dynamo.

Sir Alex: Cristiano Will Return to United

(Soccer365.com) Sir Alex Ferguson has officially ended the 'Cristiano Ronaldo to Real Madrid' saga by confirming that the Portuguese winger will definitely be staying at Manchester United.

Despite being under contract with United until 2012 Ronaldo has repeatedly been linked with a move to the Spanish Champions and has, himself, often spoken about his own desire to more to the Bernabeu.

Speaking to Sky Sports News Ferguson left little doubt by saying: "The matter is closed now. He (Ronaldo) is a Manchester United player - it's finished. He'll be playing here next season believe me. It's finished."

This follows comments earlier in the day from Real Madrid president Ramon Calderon which suggested that Real's signing of Dutch midfielder Rafael van der Vaart was possibly going to be their only summer purchase.

"Rafael van der Vaart is the first and possibly the only signing of the summer for Real Madrid," Calderon said.

"We believe that this squad is full of quality, of plenty of talent. It's a team which is a great family, very close.

"We said that the new arrivals would be few but of great quality. That seemed logical after two successful seasons in which we've brought in 19 young, promising players.

"This (the low number of signings) was a request of the board of directors."

While fans would be forgiven for expecting yet another twist in this tale, it would now seem that the transfer season's greatest story has been put to bed.

Rooney Out Of Season Opener

(Soccer365.com) Manchester United will have to start the season without star striker Wayne Rooney after he picked up a virus during the team's pre-season tour to Africa.

United manager Sir Alex Ferguson told Sky Sports: "I doubt we'll get Rooney fit for the start of the season with the virus he's had.

"It's a virus he picked up in Nigeria and it's not a nice one, but quite a few have had it.

"It's such a bad virus and he's got to be training to be fit."

The news comes as a big blow to the Red Devils, who are already without Cristiano Ronaldo. The Portuguese winger is recovering from ankle surgery and may only be back at the end of August, assuming he doesn't move to Real Madrid.

Ferguson admitted he had a problem for the Charity Shield match against Portsmouth on 10 August, saying: "I don't know whether we will have a team ready. Nani is suspended, Anderson is in the Olympic Games.

"(Michael) Carrick's come in this morning and he may play a part of the game on Sunday.

"They've said it's a bad virus and Wayne's not back in yet, he's not been training. It's been a long time."

United's first Premier League match is on 17 August against Newcastle, and Ferguson may be forced to call on Louis Saha or Frazier Campbell to partner Carlos Tevez up front.

Robinho Hints At Chelsea Move

(Soccer365.com) Real Madrid playmaker Robinho has indicated he would be interested in a possible move to Stamford Bridge.

The Brazilian is unsettled at Real and has stated his desire to work with new Chelsea boss Luiz Felipe Scolari.

Robinho has fallen out with the club since they refused to release him for the Olympics.

He said: "I still don't know whether I will continue (at Real Madrid).

"The season is just starting and I've been given some offers from other clubs.

"I have one from Chelsea, but nothing has been sorted out yet. We are just discussing."

Real Fret Over Sneijder Injury

(Soccer365.com) Real Madrid coach Bernd Schuster has confirmed Wesley Sneijder will be out for "a while" after the Holland playmaker was carried off in the Emirates Cup defeat to Arsenal on Sunday.

Sneijder left the field on a stretcher after an hour following a heavy challenge by Arsenal midfielder Abou Diaby as the Primera Liga champions went down 1-0 - a result which handed the trophy to Hamburg, who beat Juventus 3-0 earlier in the day.

However, all that was overshadowed by Sneijder's injury.

"Undoubtedly he is not good," said Schuster. "We're all very worried about him.

"The truth is that this moment for him is very difficult. He is in a lot of pain.

"We still have to do more tests but it doesn't look good.

"I think it's better to wait and hear what the doctor has to say. That will be more complete, and clearer. But I can say that it is not good, he will be out for a while.

"It could be a cruciate ligament injury. We'll have to wait and see what the professionals say."

Sneijder is almost certain to miss the start of the new Spanish season.

"We're going to have to be without him for a bit," added Schuster.

"We now have go back home and recover our spirits from all this.

"But it is also something that happens in football. All great footballers have had these things and I'm sure he'll be back to normal soon."

While the two-day tournament is a friendly competition, the tackles which were flying in suggested the players were taking it as serious as any league match.

However, Schuster refused to attach any blame to Arsenal or Diaby.

"It's an English team and they play with a lot of intensity," he continued. "These things can happen. It's the way they play here and you have to accept that.

"The Emirates Cup is a tournament with very prestigious teams and they all want to give a good display and win.

"For that reason we had to be careful not to take risks and that's why the (Spain) internationals didn't play. It's a pity because it's a great tournament."

Sneijder's compatriot Arjen Robben also expressed his sympathy for his Madrid and Holland team-mate.

"We have to wait and see what's wrong," he said. "It looks very bad, very disappointing.

"He's a great player and a great person. We have to wait and see. Tomorrow he'll have a scan and we'll have to hope for the best."

Madrid have long been linked with Hamburg star Rafael van der Vaart and could increase their efforts to sign the midfielder in the wake of Sneijder's injury.

However, Robben refused to comment on whether he would be a fitting substitute.

"I don't want to speak about this," he said. "We only have to speak about Wesley.

"It's very disappointing for him, very sad. It's very sad news and we cannot speak about other players now."

Eduardo Happy With Recovery

(Soccer365.com) Arsenal striker Eduardo da Silva believes he could be ready for a return to action as soon as the end of the year.

The Croatian international is currently recovering from the horrific broken leg he sustained in a horrendous tackle from Birmingham defender Martin Taylor in February.

Eduardo returned to England to continue his rehabilitation after four months in his homeland of Brazil, and the player is happy with how his recovery is going.

"It is good (his recovery) because I was in Brazil for rehabilitation for four months, I worked hard every day doing two sessions for six or seven hours every day," Eduardo said.

"I think for me it was very hard, but now I forget everything that happened.

"I came here to finish my rehabilitation.

"It was very difficult, very hard for me as Arsenal were playing very well (at the time of the injury), scoring a lot of goals and doing good in the table.

"For me it was very hard as I like playing and this injury means five, six, seven, eight months not playing and that is very hard for any player."
