Ronaldo Brace Sinks Hammers

A first half brace by Cristiano Ronaldo saw Manchester United cruise to a 2-0 win over West Ham at Old Trafford on Wednesday night.

The match got underway a few minutes late as United winger Ronaldo was presented with his FIFPro Player of the Year trophy in front of his home fans.

Dimitar Berbatov got things going quickly, taking a shot from 12 yards out that would have been a goal had Matthew Upson not brilliantly deflected it for a corner.

Ronaldo justified his earlier award presentation when he scored in the 14th minute. He neatly put the ball home from the middle of the area off Nani's cross after some sustained pressure by the defending champions.

Anderson had a great chance to double the Red Devils' lead in the 21st minute. He intercepted a poor Lee Bowyer pass right in front of goal and only needed to beat Robert Green, but the Brazilian kicked it right at the grateful 'keeper.

Ronaldo bagged is brace on the half hour, thanks to Berbatov's brilliant work. The Bulgarian streaked down the wing past a number of Hammers to cross to Ronaldo, who slid the ball home from close range.

The second half started off slowly, with Carlos Tevez creating a rare chance after 54 minutes. Ronaldo did some good work down the wing to cross in, and Tevez spun past the defence but Hayden Mullins was on hand to block the shot.

A very closely shorn Wayne Rooney replaced Nani with 20-odd minutes to go as United sought a third goal in a much more subdued second stanza. He tried his best to get his name on the scoresheet, taking several shots at goal, but it was not to be.

Maradona To Take Argentina Reins

Diego Maradona will be confirmed as the new Argentina coach next Tuesday, according to Argentina Football Association National Team's secretary Luis Segura.

Maradona, 47, revealed on Tuesday he is on the verge of accepting the job and met with Argentinian Football Association (AFA) president Julio Grondona on Tuesday night.

Argentina have been without a coach since Alfio Basile stepped down for personal reasons on October 16, although Maradona has little coaching experience, having been in charge of Deportivo Mandiyu for two months in 1994 and Racing Club for four months in 1995.

"The appointment will be official when the AFA's Committee approves it. And the next meeting is scheduled for next Tuesday." said Segura.

"I believe there will not be anymore meetings with the other candidates."

Segura did confirm Sergio Batista will be in charge for the November 19 friendly against Norway in Oslo.

Earlier 1986 World Cup winner Maradona told Radio La Red: "My first job will be watching the players.

"I'll try to talk to them one by one and then work at the training camp in Ezeiza with them.

"I arrived from Georgia at 10am and three hours later I was having a shower to meet Julio.

"As I was going to the meeting, I thought it was some kind of hidden camera (show).

"The direction Julio wants for the national team is the same Bilardo and I have.

"My job will be watching the players and picking up the ones who are in the best form."

Maradona faces the task of helping Argentina improve their form with the Albicelestes having won just one of their last seven World Cup qualifiers to lie third in the South American Zone.

The former Argentina captain told FOX Sports: "The offer from Julio Grondona attracted me a lot.

"As soon as it is confirmed, I will start working, but I can say I am very proud.

"I'm putting everything aside for this. There is nothing that can make me look past the national team.

"Today my path is the national team, my task is to talk to the players and build a solid group.

"I am sure the guys and Argentinian football will pull through.

"I think we must make the players understand that our shirt is the most important thing, that they cannot exchange money for glory.

"Glory is much more than money. I know they know that, but we must make them remember that every day.

"We have enough quality to calm the nation.

"The road to the World Cup is not easy, but I believe in the Argentinian players.

"Everybody wants to play at the World Cup but we must show our traditions and our style on the field."

MLS: Beckham Isn't Leaving L.A.

MLS chief Don Garber has moved to make it very clear that the proposed AC Milan loan spell will not end with Galaxy superstar David Beckham leaving club.

The Rossoneri have made a bid to bring the England midfielder to San Siro for two months, which is now being weighed by Los Angeles management.

"People don't understand what's going on here," Garber told the New York Times. "He is not being transferred and the stories that he is not going to come back are ridiculous."

"We have loaned players out in the past during the off-season many times - it's part of the game."

"Milan wants him for two months because they know it's better than not having him at all, but we're only willing to do it if it's on our terms and if it's satisfactory to the Galaxy," he concluded. "If not, it won't be approved by us."

Robinho Sets a 30 Goal Target

Following his hat-trick Manchester City star Robinho is targeting 30 goals this season.

The Brazilian has now scored six goals in six matches since arriving at Eastlands.

Robinho, City's record signing, said: "The main objective is for the team to do well but personally, I want to score more than 30 goals.

"I am very happy but not completely happy because I still have a lot to learn.

"I will be truly happy at the end when we finish what I hope will be a good season.

"The Champions League is our goal.

"The Premier League is very competitive and it'll be very difficult to get into the top four.

"But I believe in the team and I think we can get there."

City manager Mark Hughes was full of praise for the former Real Madrid ace, adding: "Robinho is key to what we are trying to do here and maybe in the past he has not had that feeling. He is responding in a really positive way.

"The crowd adore what he is producing and rightly so. He has a really close relationship with everyone here, which shows what an impact he has made here in a very short space of time."

Report: Ljungberg Set For Seattle

Former Arsenal and West Ham midfielder Freddie Ljungberg is set to join Major League Soccer side Seattle Sounders.

According to several football websites in his homeland, the former Sweden international is rumoured to have signed a two year deal estimated at US $20million a year.

Seattle Sounders have announced that a press conference will take place on Tuesday afternoon where they have announced they will unveil a new star player.

Ljungberg's agent has landed in the US but has not confirmed that his client is with him.

He said: "We have no comments to the press today. I have nothing to say more than something is going to happen within soon."

The MLS have a contract limit of US $20million per year but the move will be made possible due to the 'designated player rule' that was announced when Beckham signed for LA Galaxy.

Ljungberg made a name for himself at Arsenal whom he signed for in 1998 where he gained the reputation as a goal-scoring midfielder. Ljungberg left Arsenal in 2007 from where he joined West Ham United.

Donovan Wants EPL/La Liga Move

Los Angeles Galaxy striker Landon Donovan is eyeing a move to the English Premier League or Spain's La Liga in the January transfer window.

The United States' all-time leading goalscorer may have played his last game for the Galaxy in a 2-2 home draw with FC Dallas at the Home Depot Center, during which he converted a penalty for his 20th goal to win the MLS golden boot for 2008.

The 26-year-old who had an unsuccessful stint at Bayer Leverkusen before signing for Los Angeles in 2005, believes his future lies in England or Spain and has already been in contact with Bayern Munich boss Jurgen Klinsmann about a move to the German Bundesliga.

"I'd love to play in the Premiership, I think that would be incredible," Donovan said following the Galaxy's final game of the season.

"I'd love to play in Spain.

"Whether that happens I don't know but I think where my qualities are best would be in a team that plays. I'm not going to go and battle John Terry and expect to win but if I can get on a team that plays good soccer I think I could help."

"I watch games every weekend and it's exciting watching those games and I think I could contribute on a lot of teams," Donovan added, when asked specifically about English football. "It would be a much easier fit than most places, for sure.

"Obviously, there's a lot of ifs. If the Galaxy is okay with me going, if the League is willing to accept an offer, if an offer comes.

"In my situation I can't be super picky but if it's the right offer and makes sense with the right team...there's a lot of ifs.

"But from my standpoint I'm ready to take that step and I want to.

"Competitively I have that itch and I want to go and I will make that very clear to people."

Donovan said he would approach MLS officials this week to request a move. MLS holds all player contracts in their league and negotiates transfers with transfer revenue divided between itself and the club concerned in any deal.

He added that he had told Galaxy head coach Bruce Arena of his wish to join a European club.

"I think the League is aware of my situation and I've had brief talks with Bruce about it and let him know, but it's still early.

"There can be a lot of fluctuation between now and January 1. Teams that are in trouble might be playing great by then and vice versa. Injuries happen and we'll see where we're at."

Donovan accepted that following his first spell in Germany, he might be a harder sell to top European clubs but said he now had a different mindset and approach to his profession.

"I'm ready and I wasn't ready before in any way or capacity. I'm ready and I want to make the most of that. I've only got one career and I want to make sure that I give myself a chance."

Donovan's request to quit MLS comes at the end of a week in which Galaxy captain David Beckham's commitment to the LA cause has been called into question following news of his desire to join AC Milan on loan during the MLS close season.

Beckham backed his team-mate's ambition but said he hoped the American would stay at the Galaxy in 2009.

"I'd like to see him remain here but he's 26 years old, I've heard the rumours about him going to Europe and if he does, good luck to him.

"He's a good player, everybody knows that and he's succeeded here in the US so if he does get the chance to go to Europe and enjoy some success over there it's down to him.

"Obviously I hope he stays here because he's valuable to the team."

Real Madrid End Ronaldo Pursuit

Real Madrid president Ramon Calderon has reportedly said the club are no longer interested in luring Cristiano Ronaldo away from Manchester United.

Ronaldo was at the centre of one of the summer's most hotly debated transfers as the Primera Liga champions pursued the Portuguese winger throughout the Euro 2008 campaign.

However, Premier League and European champions United maintained they would not sell their prize asset, who eventually opted to stay at Old Trafford.

And Calderon - who refrained from tabling a bid for Ronaldo - now insists that he has permanently ended his efforts to entice the winger to Spain.

"It (a deal for Ronaldo) is not possible," said Calderon. "That matter is over.

"We talked about that last season. Manchester decided they did not want to sell the player and we don't want to do anything against a friendly club like Manchester.

"We accept that Ronaldo decided to stay at Manchester. It is forgotten. Not only for January but, I think, for ever."

Chelsea Goes Three Points Clear

Chelsea continued the defence of their seemingly-impenetrable Stamford Bridge fortress with a 1-0 Champions League victory against Roma, courtesy of John Terry's second-half header.

Luiz Felipe Scolari's men looked the favourites ahead of kickoff having won their Premier League away match against Middlesbrough 5-0 at the weekend, with the struggling Italians having lost their Serie A 4-0 match at home against Inter Milan.

Midfielder Frank Lampard had an early crack at goal, a volley from the edge of the Roma area, but Alexander Doni did well hold onto the strike from the England international, who has scored in the Blues' last four home games in the competition.

The visitors kept plenty of men behind the ball in the first half, giving Chelsea the opportunity for a fair amount of possession but also doing well to limit the hosts' attacking options with their numbers in front of goal.

John Obi Mikel was brought down outside the area to gift the Blues with a free kick from good range. Lampard struck it well and, with Doni frozen on his line, the midfielder just scraped the crossbar with his effort.

The Blues' attacking play finally paid off as they grabbed the lead in the 78th minute. Terry threw himself at Lampard's corner kick to head the ball into the back of Doni's net to claim the win, putting Chelsea three points clear in Group A.

Barcelona Dismantle Basel 5-0

Barcelona notched their 200th triumph in UEFA club competitions with their 5-0 dismantling of Basel at St Jakob Park on Wednesday night.

The Blaugrana spread the wealth as Lionel Messi, Sergi Busquets, a brace from Bojan Krkić and Xavi Hernandez each found the back of the net.

The tone was set early as Messi hit for the opener in the 4th minute of play and had a three goal advantage by the halftime break and the scoreline could have been worse for the Rotblau.

The second half was more of the same as Bojan scored minutes into the second period and Barca coasted.

The ease of victory and the ability to score was somewhat surprising considering Josep Guardiola left key trio Samuel Eto'o, Andrés Iniesta and Thierry Henry on the bench

With the win Barcelona move to the top of the Group C table on 9 points while Basel is in the cellar still searching for their next point.

AC Milan Confirm Beckham Loan Deal

England star David Beckham has agreed to move to Italian giants AC Milan on a loan deal according to Milan vice-president Adriano Galliani.

The LA Galaxy star, formerly of European giants Manchester United and Real Madrid, will join Milan in January as the MLS season ends next weekend.

Galliani said: "Beckham has chosen Milan. He'll stay here in Milan on loan for a few months.

"Our squad is ultra-competitive and it will remain this way but Beckham is something different and intriguing."

Milan boss Carlo Ancelotti added: "For me, it will be a pleasure. Beckham is a serious athlete, a great professional.

"If he'll be available for us, we'll be very happy."

Beckham may have decided on the move when England boss Fabio Capello made it clear he would only select active in-form players for the England squad.

Arsenal Fire On All Cylinders In Turkey

It was a story of chances taken and missed on Tuesday night as Arsenal saw off Turkish opposition Fenerbahce 5-2 in their frantic Group G Champions League clash in Istanbul.

The Gunners looked deadly on the counter attack and a defence-splitting ball from Cesc Fabregas fed through Emmanuel Adebayor who made no mistake to slot the ball low past the goalkeeper with just 10 minutes gone in the match.

Just one minute later and Arsene Wenger's men were two goals to the good as Fabregas again provided a telling through-ball - this time to Theo Walcott - and the England international rounded the 'keeper before firing home from a tight angle.

The Turkish outfit, though, were determined to keep themselves in the game and did just that as Daniel Guiza's cross-goal volley took a wicked deflection off Mikael Silvestre to leave stand-in skipper Manuel Almunia with no chance.

But the visitors again showed their dominance as Vassiriki Diaby twisted his way past a number of defenders before firing in a low drive which beat the flailing 'keeper.

Arsenal showed little sympathy in the second-half and were soon 4-1 up as the ball bounced around inside the Fenerbahce area and Alexandre Song Billong found himself in the right place to slam home his volley following a poor headed clearance.

The hosts did manage a second goal shortly before the full-time whistle through captain Daniel Guiza, but Aaron Ramsey ensured there would be no twist in the tale, firing the ball in off the upright as the Gunners continued their unbeaten run in Group G.

Berbatov, ManUtd Sinks Celtic

Dimitar Berbatov bagged his second Champions League brace for Manchester United in their 3-0 Group E victory over Celtic at Old Trafford on Tuesday, despite some controversial decisions surrounding the Bulgarian's finishes.

United dominated the attack in the opening stages with Cristiano Ronaldo and Wayne Rooney making an impact up front.

The Bhoys responded with a close chance through Aiden McGeady's 11th-minute strike but goalkeeper Edwin Van der Sar did well to turn the low drive outside his upright. The big Dutchman was soon called upon again as he managed to tip Gary Caldwell's goal-bound volley over the crossbar.

The Red Devils snatched the lead in the 30th minute with Berbatov stabbing the ball home past Artur Boruc after Celtic struggled to deal with United's corner. Replays suggested the hitman was in an offside position.

The 51st minute saw United double their lead. Ronaldo sent a free kick over the wall which Boruc fumbled and Berbatov made sure he was available to tap in the loose ball. Again replays revealed Berbatov was offside.

Just two minutes later Rooney slotted home for the hosts, but his effort was disallowed as he was incorrectly ruled offside. However, he managed to earn a place on the scoresheet, making it seven goals in a row for club and country, by placing a superb low shot into the bottom corner and sealing the win for Sir Alex Ferguson's men.

Arsenal Expects Turkish Test

Robin van Persie has first-hand experience of the hostile Fenerbahce crowd and he has urged his Arsenal team-mates not to let it affect them.

The North London side will face Fenerbahce on Tuesday in a Champions League Group G encounter at the Sukru Saracoglu stadium, and van Persie who has faced the challenge with Feyenoord accepts it will be a tough trip.

"It will be really tough. I experienced it a few years ago and the fans there are amazing," said the Dutchman, who scored his sixth goal of the season in Saturday's 3-1 victory over Everton.

"It was really aggressive, but that is their style. You have to deal with the atmosphere. It is not nice but I think if you play for Arsenal you have to adapt and just play your game.

"It will be a good test for us and I will enjoy the game."

The Gunners manager Arsene Wenger knows it will be important to silence the Turkish fans early-on in the game.

"I have been involved in many games in Turkey. What is important is that you always have on the pitch the potential to quieten the supporters," said the Frenchman.

"That is down to how well you play and how much personality you show, and this is down to us - so I do not think it will be a problem."

Beckham Offered Milan Chance

AC Milan confirmed they have invited David Beckham to train with the club after revealing they tried to sign the midfielder last year.

Beckham is currently plying his trade in the MLS with LA Galaxy, who he joined from Real Madrid in the summer of 2007, but the American football season is drawing to a close.

The 33-year-old is thought to be returning to Europe over the winter to train with a club in order to maintain his fitness for the England team.

The former Manchester United star trained with Arsenal during the last MLS off-season and reports in Italy have linked him with a spell at the San Siro.

Milan's vice-president Adriano Galliani admits the Italian giants did make an attempt to sign the former Manchester United ace at the time he moved to America.

"I have not heard from Beckham since the night before he was transferred to Galaxy," Galliani told a press conference.

"He was close to joining Milan before going to California, but I know nothing about the rumours going around.

"But if Beckham's wish is to train with Milan, I would have to ask coach Carlo Ancelotti, but there would be no problems for the club."

Report: Beckham Seeks Premeirship Loan

David Beckham is reportedly considering a return to the Premiership in a bid to prolong his international career.

The Daily Telegraph reports that the former England captain, who made his 107th appearance for his country on Wednesday in Minsk, is 'seeking' a return to England.

With LA Galaxy, Beckham's Major League Soccer side, likely to be eliminated from the end-of-season play-offs, the 33-year-old is set to be out of club action until next April unless he moves back across the Atlantic.

'Although the former England captain trained with Arsenal in January, that move failed to convince Capello that he should select Beckham for England's friendly against Switzerland in February,' the newspaper reports. 'Beckham, 33, knows he needs top-class first-team football if he is to add to his 107 England caps.

'His advisers are in talks with Arsenal about training again with Arsene Wenger's side ahead of the friendly against Germany in Berlin on Nov 19. If selected, Beckham would equal the 108-cap outfield record of World Cup-winning captain Bobby Moore. He is also interested in joining a Premier League club and is looking to get permission from LA Galaxy.'

Although the newspaper doesn't specifically say so, a loan deal may be the most feasible option for Beckham. While his box-office rating will make him an appealing prospective short-term signing for many Premiership clubs, his wages may prove a problem, if not prohibitive.

Barcelona Excited By MLS Bid

Barcelona president Joan Laporta is excited at the club's plans to play a part in the expansion of Major League Soccer.

The Catalan giants, in conjunction with prominent Hispanic businessman Marcelo Claure, are spearheading Miami's bid to secure an MLS franchise for the Floridian city.

Seven cities have applied for the two spots available and should Miami be successful, Laporta feels it would enable Barca to make inroads into the American market.

He said: "This is a very important day for Barca. We have waited many years to find an opportunity to penetrate the American and Latin market.

"Thanks to a series of factors, we can achieve this. Miami is the door of hope and dreams, it's a city full of life."

Claure is also the owner of Bolivian club Bolivar - another plus, according to Laporta.

He added: "We believe Claure offers us guarantees that this project will be a success.

"He is the perfect partner because he understands the football philosophy and the management model of Barca.

"The club's aim and responsibility is that the team of Miami becomes more than just a football club."

Benitez Furious About Torres Injury

Liverpool boss Rafa Benitez is furious after star striker Fernando Torres came back from international duty with a hamstring strain.

Benitez may also be without Dutch winger Ryan Babel who was injured during the clash against Norway.

Benitez said: "I am very disappointed about this because it now looks like we will lose Fernando for three very important games.

"We have Wigan at home and Chelsea away in the league and Atletico Madrid away in the Champions League, so to lose any players is a big blow.

"The initial reports say Fernando is likely to be out for around 10 days and that would mean he would miss these games.

"There are too many international games and the demands on the players are too much. Someone needs to analyse this situation because it is putting the players at risk of injury.

"Maybe the answer is for there to be a two-tier qualifying system because there are too many games in the qualifiers for the World Cup and the European Championships which are not competitive but which still place great demands on the players.

"These fixtures are unnecessary and maybe it would be better if the weaker countries played one another and the best of them went to play the stronger countries in the qualifiers."

T&T Down Youthful USA MNT

With a berth to next year’s Final Round of qualifying already secure, the U.S. Men’s National Team fell 2-1 to Trinidad & Tobago on a 79th-minute penalty kick.

Experience was the story of the game, as Russell Latapy, 40, and Dwight Yorke, 36, scored both goals for Trinidad, while also helping the Soca Warriors hold a U.S. lineup, that averaged less than 24-years-old, to just three shots all evening. After a scoreless first half, Latapy opened the scoring in the 61st minute and then Charlie Davies notched the equalizer with 15 minutes remaining, but Yorke put the Soca Warriors one step closer to advancing to the Final Round when he stepped up and buried the game-winning spot kick.

For the U.S., only four of the 11 starters had more than 10 caps going into the game, while central defender Michael Orozco was making his first career international appearance. Jose Torres, who made his first appearance as a reserve against Cuba just four days earlier, was also making his first career start for the U.S. Men. Meanwhile, for Trinidad & Tobago, Latapy and Yorke played in the infamous match on Nov. 19, 1989, in which Paul Caligiuri scored the goal that gave the U.S. a 1-0 victory and earned a place at the 1990 FIFA World Cup.

The win for Trinidad & Tobago was their first in 14 years against the U.S., and first-ever FIFA World Cup qualifying win in a dozen tries.

“It was a hard fought match. I thought both teams went after each other in a way that made it hard,” said U.S. head coach Bob Bradley after his first loss to a CONCACAF opponent. “In the second half, I thought we had a good response when we went down 1-0, and unfortunately when the game is 1-1 and everything is to play for, we have a foul. Certainly we have a lot of respect for Trinidad & Tobago. They have a lot of talented players, and we knew it was going to be a physical game. It was hard match and a physical match, with intensity on both sides."

Trinidad & Tobago got on the score sheet first in the 61st minute as they attacked the U.S. up the middle before the ball was sent wide right to Carlos Edwards. He dribbled one-on-one vs. Heath Pearce to get into the area before chipping a soft pass back into the center. Latapy backed off his run to create space away from Danny Califf, and hit a first-time shot that hit the post and went off a diving Guzan’s back before going into the net.

The U.S. was able to respond in the 75th minute, as Davies found the back of the net just six minutes after coming into the game. The play started on the right with Altidore laying the ball back to Maurice Edu. Edu’s first touch forward was overcooked, but fortunately went right back to Altidore who was able to turn through the Trinidad & Tobago defense and dribble to the endline, where his low cross was tapped into an open goal by a charging Davies.

Three minutes later, Edwards was dangerous again as Trinidad & Tobago substitute Khaleem Hyland sent a cross from the left that was deftly settled by Edwards beyond the far post before he uncorked a shot that was cleared over the goal by Orzoco. On the ensuing corner, Altidore surrendered a penalty as he grabbed a handful of Makan Hislop’s jersey in plain site of referee Walter Quesada, who pointed to the spot. Yorke converted the game-winner for Trinidad & Tobago.

In the 83rd minute Altidore had the opportunity to redeem the penalty he surrendered. Beasley sent a long free kick to the right side of the area that was headed across goal by Sacha Kljestan and then flicked left again by Davies. Altidore was unmarked at the far post, but hit the header wide from three yards out.

The U.S. team’s seven-game winning streak in qualifiers that dated to 2005 was snapped, as was their perfect run in 2010 qualifying. The loss also snapped a record three-game winning streak in road qualifiers. Pearce, making the start at left back, is now the only U.S. player to appear in all seven FIFA World Cup qualifying matches this cycle.

In the other Group 1 match, Cuba stunned Guatemala 2-1 in Havana, meaning that Trinidad & Tobago holds a three point edge over Guatemala going into the final match day.

Seven Cities Bid for MLS Expansion

Seven prospective ownership groups from markets throughout the United States and Canada have submitted an application for a future Major League Soccer expansion team.

MLS intends to add two more clubs in the next few years, bringing the League to 18 teams. Seattle Sounders FC begin play next year as the 15th team in MLS, and Philadelphia will join in 2010 as the League’s 16th team.

The following ownership groups have submitted applications to the MLS office.

Arthur Blank - Atlanta
FC Barcelona and Marcelo Claure - Miami
The Saputo and Gillett Families - Montreal
Eugene Melnyk - Ottawa
The Paulson Family - Portland
Investment group led by Jeff Cooper - St. Louis
Greg Kerfoot, Steve Nash and Jeff Mallett - Vancouver

The applications will be reviewed by the League office and the MLS Expansion Committee. An announcement regarding which markets will receive the next two expansion clubs will take place during the fourth quarter of 2008 or the first quarter of 2009.

Kenny Cooper: I Turned Down US Call-Up

While many observers may have snorted when Kenny Cooper was again left off the U.S. squad this week, the FC Dallas ace divulged that he actually rejected the chance to suit up for the National Team due to fitness woes.

The striker, who stands second in MLS with 18 goals, was summoned after the 'Nats clinched their place in the final round of CONCACAF World Cup qualifying with a 6-1 win over Cuba on Saturday.

"I feel so fortunate and honored to have been invited to join up with the U.S. Men's National Team in Trinidad & Tobago," Cooper told the official FC Dallas blog. "I made the difficult decision to pass on this opportunity because I had picked up a virus and have been playing with a sprained ankle."

"Considering the importance of my club's game versus Real Salt Lake this week, and that the National Team has already clinched a berth in the next round of qualifying, I felt it was the right thing to do to stay in Dallas and make sure I get well, and hopefully there will be other opportunities down the line."

Ronaldo Hoped Fans Would Forgive

Following his much-publicized transfer saga over the summer Cristiano Ronaldo hopes Manchester United fans can forgive him.

The Portuguese starlet made no secret of his desire to move to Spanish giants Real Madrid, but following behind the scenes wrangling Ronaldo was prevailed upon to stay at Old Trafford for at least one more season.

Ronaldo missed the first few weeks of the season due to ankle injury, and he was eager to see how fans would react to him when he eventually played his first game.

He said: "In the game when I came back against Villarreal I wasn't nervous but just a bit excited to see how the fans would react to me.

"Thank God things went well. This shows people have not forgotten all the good things we've done together and I'm very happy with that."

Now Ronaldo is concentrating on helping United repeat their double of last season, adding: "Things are going pretty well. I'd love a repeat of last season and continue to show some good progression."

Rooney Wants More Goals for England

Wayne Rooney admits he is keen to start scoring consistently for England following his brace in Saturday's World Cup qualifier against Kazakhstan.

The Manchester United ace looked sharp during England's 5-1 win and continued his hot streak with a late double at Wembley.

Rooney has been in fine form for United in recent weeks but accepts he has faced difficult periods throughout his career.

The 22-year-old, who has netted 17 times in 47 appearances for his country, is hungry for goals and hopes to torment Belarus on Wednesday.

"It's always been the case that my goals come all at once, then a little break and then they come again," Rooney said.

"I would like to do it a bit more consistently and keep scoring all the time."

US Advances with 6-1 Win Over Cuba

The U.S. Men's National Team clinched a berth in the Final Round of 2010 FIFA World Cup qualifying with a dominating 6-1 victory against Cuba.

DaMarcus Beasley scored two goals, while Landon Donovan, Brian Ching, Jozy Altidore and Oguchi Onyewu added tallies as the U.S. took full advantage of the passionate home support.

The U.S. is undefeated in World Cup qualifying, with six consecutive wins. In what is the best ever start to a U.S. qualifying campaign, the team has set a record for the most consecutive victories in one World Cup qualifying cycle. The victory also increased the U.S. Men’s record run of qualifying wins in a row to seven, dating back to the last match in the Final Round of qualifying for the 2006 FIFA World Cup.

“Our goal was to earn a spot in the next round, and we’re very pleased we were able to accomplish that tonight,” said U.S. Men’s National Team Bob Bradley. “We were also pleased with a strong team performance, especially against a Cuba team that fought hard and were difficult to break down despite coming in with no points.”

Bradley’s side started strong, taking the game to the Cubans from the opening whistle. They found the breakthrough just ten minutes in, when Beasley latched on to an excellent through ball by midfielder Sacha Kljestan. Beasley’s one-time finish, his 16th goal for the U.S., was perfectly placed to beat Cuban goalkeeper Odelin Molina to the far right post.

The goal rattled Cuba, allowing the U.S. offense to continue churning, generating more chances in front of an excited home crowd. Midfielder Clint Dempsey sent an attempt just over the bar in the 22nd minute, and then a minute later Michael Bradley had a goal disallowed for offside.

In the 30th minute, Donovan collected the ball on the right flank, looked to the far post and whipped in an excellent ball to Beasley, who timed his run to perfection. He controlled well with his chest, before forcing the ball past Molina with his right foot for his second goal of the night.

For most teams, the early goals would signal an oncoming rout, but Cuba fought the odds and surprised everyone by responding immediately in the 32nd minute. Jenzy Muñoz pounced on a loose ball on the edge of the U.S. area, and with the outside of his foot he hit a perfectly weighted shot that barely grazed the crossbar before going in the goal over the outstretched Tim Howard.

The goal was the first for a U.S. opponent in 582 minutes of action since Spain scored against the U.S. on June 4 in Santander. It also ended a shutout streak of 573 minutes during World Cup qualifying.

Already a goal down, Cuba’s task was made even harder in the 41st minute when Yoel Colomé was dismissed for his second yellow card. Colomé clipped Donovan, who had used his pace to beat the Cuban defender to the ball, and referee Roberto Moreno Salazar had little choice in putting the offender in his notebook for the second time.

The U.S. made a slight tweak to their formation to start the second half, but continued to keep the pressure on Cuba, and Donovan put the proverbial nail in the coffin just three minutes in when he finished off one of the prettiest goals of the evening. After a series of passes through the midfield, Ching collected the ball at the top of the penalty area with his back to goal and then slipped the ball wide left to Heath Pearce. With his first touch toward the endline, Pearce then slipped the ball through the six-yard box where a crashing Ching let the ball go and allowed Donovan the easy tap-in past Molina.

After two point-blank attempts from Dempsey and Beasley were saved by Molina, the Cuban goalkeeper was unable to keep out Ching’s goal-line header in the 63rd minute. Beasley whipped in a free kick from the right side to the back post for a wide-open Kljestan, who headed the ball along the goal line where Ching did the last bit to make sure it was across the line.

In the 68th minute, José Torres made his international debut for the U.S. when he came in for Heath Pearce, while Altidore replaced Ching. Altidore was the first to provide a spark, collecting a through ball on the right side and holding off his defender as he darted on goal, but Molina once again proved up to the task, this time knocking away the attempt with his right knee.

Altidore would get another chance, but first Donovan came just a foot from tallying his second on the night, his free-kick skimming the outside of the post from 25 yards. Torres meanwhile, was making his mark on proceedings, and the debutant unleashed a rocket just high from 30 yards out. In the 87th minute, Altidore finally broke through when Dempsey slipped him straight up the gut of the Cuban defense and the youngster held off his defender before burying a low shot past a helpless Molina.

Onyewu finished off the scoring in the 90th minute when he headed home a cross from Freddy Adu, who had replaced Kljestan in the 76th minute.

Next, the U.S. will travel to Trinidad & Tobago for a match on Oct 15th at 8 p.m. ET.

Jozy Altidore: Young Yanks Stick Together

Villarreal strike prodigy Josmer Altidore says the young Americans Abroad have built a support network that spans across several countries.

The power forward is currently in U.S. National Team camp preparing for World Cup qualifiers against Cuba and Trinidad & Tobago, along with the kindred likes of Monaco's Freddy Adu, Hammarby's Charlie Davies, Maurice Edu of Rangers and Aston Villa's Brad Guzan.

"All the young guys, we're out there for the first time," Altidore told AP.

"It's a bit of a change for us, so of course you know we all keep in touch, to see how each other is doing - whether it's Scotland, Sweden, France - just to touch base with each other."

Not that life is rough for the former Red Bulls ace in northern Spain.

"At first, the language was the biggest barrier," Altidore said. "But surprisingly to myself, little by little, I've gotten good at it."

"As soon as I'm fluent, I'm going to just love the life because I already love it now."

Man United Avoid Credit Crisis

The Glazer family is confident Manchester United will not be affected by the credit crisis.

Some teams have already started to feel the affects of the global financial meltdown, following years of overspending by the clubs.

Billionaire owners at Chelsea and Manchester City are able to handle the cash troubles but Manchester United were expected to struggle.

The Red Devils are GBP 660 million in debt following the Glazer's takeover in 2005, but the club is still able to generate massive revenue world-wide.

"The credit crunch is not having a negative bearing on United," the Glazers said.

"We continue to benefit from the sell-out of Old Trafford and the growth in commercial operations.

"We refinanced back in 2006 and that structure provides long-term stability. The debt continues to be comfortably serviced by the club's strong growth in cash flow."

Manchester United And Tevez Seeking New Deal

Argentina forward Carlos Tevez and Manchester United would both like to settle on a deal for the striker.

There have been rumours surrounding the striker's future, but he said he would love to make his stay at Old Trafford more permanent and the club are in agreement.

Tevez said: "Ever since I came here I have wanted to sign a permanent contract and I would sign it, without a doubt.

"I had very happy first season and I would be very happy if the chairman would put a permanent contract in front of me."

A United spokesman said: "(Chief executive) David Gill told the papers in South Africa in July that we would hope to conclude a deal with Carlos before the new year.

"That is still our aim. The clocks haven't even gone back yet, so to talk of delays is nonsense.

"Both the club and Carlos are relaxed about the situation."

Liverpool Rallies Late at City

Dirk Kuyt scored his first Premier League goal since November as Liverpool came from two goals down to win 3-2 away to 10-man Manchester City.

The Holland striker rattled the ball home in stoppage time at Eastlands on Sunday to preserve the Reds' unbeaten start to the season.

The home side had raced into a two-goal lead in the first half through Stephen Ireland and Javier Garrido.

Fernando Torres pulled a goal back before City's Pablo Zabaleta was sent off.

The momentum was then with Liverpool with Torres adding a second before Kuyt, who was guilty of a shocking earlier miss, having the final word.

Liverpool almost went ahead as early as the fourth minute when Albert Riera got a good touch and goalkeeper Joe Hart had to look alert to turn his effort around the post.

The visitors kept up the pressure and launched a swift counter-attack in the 15th minute. Javier Mascherano, who was preferred to Robbie Keane tried to send Steven Gerrard clear.

However Shaun Wright-Phillips showed his defensive qualities to get in a crucial challenge.

Three minutes later Kuyt should have put Liverpool ahead only to sky his shot over the top in front of the post after Riera had set up the opening.

City made the breakthrough a minute later thanks to Ireland's third goal of the season.

Wright-Phillips did well to cut the ball back from the by-line but it seemed to get stuck under Robinho's feet.

However it eventually fell to Ireland and the ever-improving midfielder rifled an unstoppable shot into the corner.

Whenever Liverpool did break forward City were defending in numbers from front to back.

Xabi Alonso tried his luck from distance in the 38th minute but Hart was equal to his effort.

City extended their lead three minutes later after Wright-Phillips was bundled over Riera, who had a spell on loan at Eastlands.

Garrido stepped up and sent a superb free-kick over a stunned Reina for his first goal for the club.

However it was game on the 56th minute with Liverpool pulling a goal back through Torres.

England midfielder Steven Gerrard, a subdued figure in the first half, began the move by releasing Alvaro Arbeloa.

He skipped to the byline before delivering a cross into the path of Torres, who scored from close range.

It was the Spain striker's fourth goal of the league campaign and came on the back of his brace in the victory over Everton.

This was now a test of character for City, whose own form in the domestic campaign has been a little bit inconsistent.

However they hit back and Wright-Phillips skipped down the wing in the 65th minute, leaving Liverpool players trailing in his wake.

He picked out Robinho but he was unable to test Reina, his effort going over the bar.

The game took a dramatic twist in the 68th minute when City were reduced to 10 men.

Zabaleta was sent off by referee Peter Walton for what the official deemed as a two-footed lunge on Alonso, who needed brief treatment.

Keane was introduced at the expense of Mascherano in the 72nd minute and a minute later Liverpool were level.

Torres peeled away from his marker as Gerrard swung in the corner and thumped home a header.

He had a chance of completing his hat-trick in the 82nd minute only to send his effort at the back post wide of the target.

Kuyt then secured the points in stoppage time, smashing the ball high into the net after Torres' shot had bobbled off Dunne and into his path.

Chelsea Boosted By Drogba News

Chelsea manager Luiz Felipe Scolari has admitted his relief after discovering striker Didier Drogba will not require surgery on his knee injury.

The Ivory Coast international underwent a scan on Thursday and it is understood the result showed he sustained no significant ligament damage.

It was initially feared Drogba could be facing a lengthy lay-off after he limped out of the stadium on crutches and with his right leg in a brace following the Blues' goalless draw at CFR Cluj.

Scolari is operating with a limited squad and losing his first-choice striker for any length of time would have left Chelsea short of options up front.

The draw at Cluj was the first time Chelsea have failed to score this season, and midfielder Frank Lampard believes the team all need to get in amongst the goals.

"If Didier is out for a while, we will have to pitch in with goals from all around the team, which we can do, though the situation is not ideal," said Lampard, who has scored five times already.

Henry Happy At Barca

Thierry Henry has dismissed reports linking him with a move away from Barcelona, claiming he is happy at the club.

The Frenchman's future at the Nou Camp has been the subject of speculation with the player thought to be unhappy with his role in Pep Guardiola's squad.

Henry struggled again in Barca's Champions League clash against Shakhtar Donetsk with the former Arsenal captain being substituted for Lionel Messi, who scored both goals as the Catalans turned around a 1-0 deficit to win 2-1.

However, Henry, 31, insists he is happy at Barca and that the team's celebrations against Shakhtar showed the renewed spirit within the side.

"I am happy at Barcelona and you can see that when everyone was off the bench when we scored," Henry said.

"We have a very good atmosphere in the team. It helps us to win games like the won that we have won here.

"We have changed the tactics but the team has the same attitude and character. It is better to win with goals and quality but sometimes you have to win like this."

Henry was replaced by Messi just before the hour mark and he believes the Argentine is the best player in the world.

"I am very pleased for Leo because he is the best player in the world," added Henry.
