Arsenal Stun Chelsea At The Bridge

Robin van Persie scored twice in the space of three minutes to give Arsenal a superb 2-1 victory over Premier League leaders Chelsea at Stamford Bridge on Sunday.

Chelsea had the first chance on goal inside five minutes when Gunners defender Bacary Sagna was dispossessed by Nicolas Anelka who slid into the box. Only a perfectly-timed tackle by Cesc Fabregas prevented the former Arsenal man from scoring.

Arsenal goalkeeper Manuel Almunia showed signs of form early on and made a vital save in the 24th minute when Frank Lampard headed Jose Bosingwa's cross toward goal. Ultimately, it was a mistake from Almunia which led to the Blues taking the lead as the Spanish goalkeeper was too hasty to roll the ball out after making a save and Bosingwa pounced on the loose ball and swung a low cross into the area. Defender Johan Djourou then turned the ball into his own net as he was under immense pressure from Salomon Kalou.

Five minutes before the break Arsenal had a chance to make it 1-1 when van Persie found space in the area and forced a one-handed save from Petr Cech following his right-footed effort.

Chelsea dominated the majority of the first half through territory and possession and it looked like they were going to continue that way in the second period. However, the Gunners failed to believe they were a beaten side and made matters level on 59 minutes when van Persie found the back of the net.

Chelsea players complained the Dutchman was offside when he received Samir Nasri's through ball, but the referee insisted the ball touched Ashley Cole on its way to the striker, thereby playing him onside.

The Gunners star then made got his second goal within three minutes when he put Arsenal in the lead with a superb left-footed finish. Arsenal won a free-kick outside the area which Emmanuel Adebayor headed down for his strike partner who buried it past Cech to leave the Stamford Bridge crowd stunned.

Luiz Felipe Scolari's men then pushed for the equaliser, but both Michael Ballack and Deco hit long-range efforts which failed to trouble Almunia. Three minutes from time substitute Florent Malouda also found himself in space, but failed to get the Blues back in the game.

Arsenal had a chance to make it three in stoppage time when Nicklas Bendtner broke free on goal. The Dane played the ball across the box to Denilson, but Cech was on hand to make a crucial save.

The win moves Arsenal up to fourth and keeps them in the Premier League hunt as they are now just seven points behind leaders Chelsea.

Gerrard's Fear Of Failure

Liverpool skipper Steven Gerrard admits that a fear of failure is what fuels his Premier League title ambitions.

The 28-year-old has enjoyed an illustrious career, having won the Champions League, the UEFA Cup, the FA Cup and two League Cup trophies in his ten years with the Reds.

Besides international honours the glaring gap in his trophy cabinet is a Premier League winner's medal. Gerrard says he aims to rectify this before his career is over.

"My priority is to win the Premier League. We believe we are good enough to challenge," he told the Daily Express.

"Everyone wants it so badly here. I want it because I have never won it and I don't want to finish my career without one.

"I don't want to finish my career and people look at me as a failure."

The Reds are competitively poised, sitting level on points with rivals Chelsea. Gerrard admits this is relatively new territory for the club in recent years, having last won the title 18 years ago.

"Getting involved in the title race and staying involved in it is a completely different challenge to what we are used to at Liverpool.

"To finish in the top four you can have a defeat and it does not hit you too bad.

"Two successive defeats in the title race and it could be over. But we are in there and everybody wants to make sure that's the case at the end of the season."

Villarreal Hold Man U to 0-0 Draw

Villarreal held Machester United to a 0-0 draw in Champions League action at El Madrigal on Tuesday evening.

Cristiano Ronaldo was the most dangerous player on the pitch but despite several good efforts could not sway the result.

With the draw the two sides have booked their place in the elimination round sitting squarely on 9 points. Manchester United holds the upper hand and currently are on top of the table headed into the final matchday.

Ronaldo caused problems all evening for the home side. The Portuguese international almost opened the scoring late in the first half when his volley was on target only for Villarreal goalkeeper Diego López to parry the ball onto the crossbar.

Lopez was called on throughout the match and did well in facing 9 shots on goal. Manchester United’s counterpart Tomasz Kuszczak was not as tested but held his own when called on.

Villarreal were forced to play with 10 men over the final 8 minutes of regulation when Joan Capdevila was shown a straight red card for a harsh tackle on Ronaldo. Despite the late sending off, Capdevila was one of the heros having headed a goal bound ball off the line and over the bar to preserve the draw.

Group E will be decided on Matchday 6 when United host Aalborg BK and Villarreal travel to play Celtic in Scotland. The Premier side has the upper hand only needing to match the result of Villarral to book the top spot in the group.

Ronaldo Looks Fit For Villarreal

Cristiano Ronaldo looks like he will in fact play against Villarreal after traveling out with the rest of the Manchester United team in preparation of their Champions League match.

The Portugal international was considered doubtful for the match, after he picked up a knock in United's bruising 0-0 draw with Aston Villa on Saturday.

According to the Sporting Life website, Ronaldo trained with the team on Monday morning, showing no signs of discomfort, and will in all likelihood feature for the Red Devils.

Darren Fletcher also trained with the team after missing the Villa game due to a knee injury.

It is understood that Ferguson plans to rest Edwin Van Der Saw, with either Tomasz Kuszczak or Ben Forster assuming the number one jersey.

Dimitar Berbatov and Wes Brown will both miss the game due to injuries.

Crew Hoist First MLS Cup

The New York Red Bulls were defeated by the Columbus Crew, 3-1, in the MLS Cup on Sunday at The Home Depot Center in Carson, CA.

Columbus got on the scoreboard first, in the 31st minute, when Alejandro Moreno latched onto a Guillermo Barros Schelotto pass and sent a 12-yard shot from the right side past the outstretched arms of a diving Danny Cepero. It was the only goal of the first half.

The Red Bulls leveled the match just six minutes into the second half when forward John Wolyniec finished a perfect pass from Dane Richards with an outstretched left foot and re-directed the ball into the net past William Hesmer from inside the 6-yard box. For Wolyniec it was his second goal of the 2008 MLS Cup Playoffs. But Columbus went back on top just two minutes later when Schelotto curled a corner kick into the area and Chad Marshall headed it home through traffic for a 2-1 Crew lead. Columbus defender Frankie Hejduk finished the scoring in the 82nd minute when he nodded a Schelotto chip into the box past Cepero. Schelotto finished the match with three assists.

Schelotto Wins MLS MVP

Columbus Crew midfielder Guillermo Barros Schelotto received MLS’s top individual award.

Schelotto, from Buenos Aires, Argentina, led the Crew to a League best 17-7-6 record and 57 points capturing the Supporters’ Shield trophy and the number one seed in the 2008 MLS Cup playoffs. The midfield maestro led the League with 19 assists, tied for the second highest single season total in League history, and scored seven goals. Only Carlos Valderrama’s single season record of 26 assists in 2000 eclipses Schelotto’s 2008 total.

Schelotto helped lead the charge in turning a team that finished 9-11-10 with 37 points in 2007 into one with the League’s best record and its first MLS Cup appearance in club history. The Crew’s offense ranked second in the League in 2008 with 50 goals. His field vision and ball striking ability were second to none this season.

His five game-winning assists speak to his uncanny ability to find an open teammate in timely and dangerous attacking situations. Heading into MLS Cup, Schelotto has three assists in three playoff games and has contributed on all but two of the Crew’s postseason goals. Schelotto was the MLS Player of the Week three times in 2008 and was named Player of the Month for August. He was a member of the 2007 Best XI team and becomes the second Argentine player to win the League’s Most Valuable Player award (Christian Gomez, 2006).

Schelotto signed with Columbus on April 19, 2007 after starring for a decade with storied club Argentine club Boca Juniors. Revered for his big-game presence, he scored more than 60 goals and won 16 domestic and international titles with the Argentine power house from 1996-2007. Nicknamed “El Mellizo”, the twin, Schelotto began his career with his twin brother Gustavo for their hometown side Gimnasia y Esgrima de La Plata and played together for a short period at Boca Juniors.

The Los Angeles Galaxy’s Landon Donovan and the Chicago Fire’s Cuauhtémoc Blanco were finalists for the 2008 Volkswagen Most Valuable Player Award. Donovan won the Budweiser Golden Boot Award leading the league with 20 goals, becoming only the sixth player all-time to score 20 goals in a single season. Blanco led the Chicago Fire to the Eastern Conference Final game, falling 2-1 to Schelotto’s Columbus Crew.

Maradona Wins Opener

Diego Maradona opened his managerial spell with Argentina with a 1-0 win over Scotland at Hampden on Wednesday.

The South American opened the scoring in the 8th minute of a Maxi Rodriguez goal.

Argentina continued to pressure and almost doubled the lead only for Scotland goalkeeper Allan McGregor to make a great save on a shot from Argentina skipper Javier Mascherano.

Garber: Donovan Tag At Least 10M

In an interview with the New York Times, MLS commissioner Don Garber hinted that Bayern Munich would need to offer double figure millions to land Los Angeles ace Landon Donovan.

The Galaxy star has been training with FC Hollywood for a week, and speculation is mounting on both sides of the Atlantic as to whether a transfer bid will be made.

(It's) hard to put a figure on it, but we had a had 20-year old, Jozy Altidore, who has only played in a handful of games for the National Team who we sold for $10 million," noted Garber. "It's hard to imagine that perhaps our most valuable player isn't worth at least that much, if not much more."

"If someone wants to buy Landon they need to be aware that he is one of most valuable players in the in history of our league."

Donovan, who has had two previous Bundesliga stints with Bayer Leverkusen, picked up his first MLS Golden Boot this season with 20 goals.

Drogba Handed Three-Match Ban

Chelsea striker Didier Drogba has been handed a three match ban after being found guilty of violent conduct by the FA after he lashed out at away fans during the Blues' Carling Cup defeat by Burnley.

The Ivory Coast international scored the opener at Stamford Bridge but now will sit out for three games for throwing an object, thought to be a coin, towards the stands during his celebration.

An FA regulatory commission heard the case on Tuesday and made their final decision after reviewing video evidence and written submissions.

Drogba was substituted later in the game, just ahead of Burnley's equaliser, before they went on to record a famous victory on penalties.

A statement from Chelsea read: "Didier Drogba has responded to the FA's charge of violent conduct and will not contest it."

The former Marseille striker issued an apology for the incident immediately after the Burnley defeat.

U-17 WNT Advance To World Cup Final

The U.S. Under-17 Women’s National Team defeated Germany 2-1 in a classic semifinal that saw goals from forwards Vicki DiMartino and Courtney Verloo, advancing to the FIFA U-17 World Cup Final.

USA will now face Korea DPR in the final on Nov. 16 in Auckland, New Zealand. The skillful North Koreans edged a gritty England side by a 2-1 score in the other semifinal to earn their place in the title match.

The U.S. U-17s, which lost its first game of this tournament to Japan, advanced to the final with a fantastic display of attacking ball-possession soccer in a highly entertaining match played in front of more than 8,000 boisterous fans at QEII Park. The Americans came into the game as decided underdogs against a German team that had rolled through the tournament, but the USA’s inspiring ball-winning combined with its passing rhythm and ability to connect through the midfield eventually wore the Germans down.

The dramatic winning goal came in the 81st minute after U.S. defender Amber Brooks found herself with some space in the center of the field about 45 yards from the German net. She sent a canon ball shot that froze German goalkeeper Anna Sarholz as it smacked off the upper right corner of the goal and bounced into the middle of the penalty area. U.S. midfielder Julia Roberts was first to the ball, but couldn’t get a solid hit on it and it was swept away by a retreating Germany defender. The ball bounced fortuitously to Verloo, who showed composure and class by pounding the ball home from six yard out to make it 2-1.

Earlier, it looked as if it might be the Germans day, as they tallied just six minutes into the game after starting the match by putting the USA under intense pressure. The goal came off a corner kick from the left side as Dzsenifer Marozans drilled her service into the middle of the box and 5-foot-9-inch Alexandra Popp powered her way to the ball before sending a bullet header into the USA’s net from six yards out.

Amazingly, the goal seemed to settle the U.S. team, which dominated the final 35 minutes of the first half, except for a defensive miscue that could have changed the match. In the 17th minute, U.S. defender Cloee Colohan played a poor back pass to goalkeeper Taylor Vancil, who tried to save the ball from going out for a corner kick. Instead, her poor clearance went straight to a German player in the left side of the penalty area. The German attacker had a wide open net, but fortunately for the USA, sent her shot high.

That was the last time the Germans would threaten the U.S. goal in the first half, which featured tremendous passing combinations and scoring chances from the young Americans. In the 21st minute, DiMartino was clipped down after a nice one-v-one dribbling run just above the left side of the penalty area. Roberts smacked her free-kick over the wall and to the near post, but Sarholz dove to push it away.

In the 30th minute after some extended U.S. pressure that was pinning Germany inside its own half, defender Crystal Dunn got the ball at the left corner of the penalty and spun a shot that was headed into the upper right corner before Sarholz flew full-out to tip it over on a spectacular play.

In the 35th minute, Verloo popped free after winning a bouncing ball in the box, but her screamer from 15 yards out rose just over the cross bar.

In the 40th minute, Kristie Mewis wiggled free at the top of the penalty box and cut a shot through traffic that beat Sarholz, but not the right post, hitting it squarely before the Germans cleared. Five minutes later, Samantha Mewis sent a bullet header off the middle of the crossbar from 10 yards out and the USA had to go into halftime down a goal.

The Germans started the second half with attacking energy. Turid Knaak sent a dangerous shot on goal from the right side of the penalty area that Vancil had to knock down and grab. Just minutes later, Popp hit a blistering drive from the top of the penalty area after a counter-attack and Vancil had to dive to snare it.

Against South Korea in the USA’s quarterfinal match, midfielder Erika Tymrak entered the game in the 81st minute and sent up a goal just three minutes later. She bettered that against Germany, coming on the 61st minute before setting up DiMartino’s 63rd minute equalizer.

Tymrak ran at two German defenders down the right flank, creating enough space near the end line to loop a cross into the middle. The ball flew over the Germany goalkeeper and dropped at the far post for DiMartino to bundle into the net from close range.

It was DiMartino’s fifth goal in five games, making her the only player to score in all five of her matches at the U-17 Women’s World Cup.

The equalizer was certainly deserved for the USA who out-shot Germany 15-9 for the match and put 10 shots on goal to Germany’s five.

After the tying goal, Germany sent more numbers forward, but the U.S. defense, and especially outside backs Rachel Quon and Dunn, as well as defensive midfielder Brooks, came up with big tackle after big tackle to thwart the European champions. The U.S. defense, marshaled by Colohan, was especially good shutting down Marozsan, who came into the match as the tournament’s leading scorer with six goals.

The tackles were especially hard and frequent in the last final half hour, with Brooks getting a yellow card after a scuffle with Marozsan in the 60th minute.

Right before she bagged the winner, Verloo has a chance from 35 yards, catching Sarholz off her line with a looping shot from 35 yards that fell into the top of the net.

That set the stage for Brook’s thumping shot and the wild winning goal, which was Verloo’s fourth of the tournament.

Germany tried in vain to get an equalizer during final 12 minutes including stoppage time, but the USA did well to kill some time in the corners of the field as well as win numerous 50-50 balls in dangerous areas.

The match marked the eighth time the USA and Germany have met in a knockout round game at a FIFA Women’s World Cup or an Olympic Games. The win tonight gives the USA a 6-2 record in those matches.

The U.S. team now travels back to Auckland and will have two rest days to prepare for the U-17 Women’s World Cup Final.

Beckham May Not Play at Milan, Says Seedorf

AC Milan midfielder Clarence Seedorf has his doubts as to whether new loan signing David Beckham will even play a game for the Serie A giants.

Beckham will move to to the San Siro in January after agreeing a short-term switch from the Los Angeles Galaxy during the Major League Soccer close season.

However, while Seedorf is delighted to welcome the 33-year-old to Milan, he admits he is unsure whether he will break into the team.

"I don't even know if he'll be able to play for us," the Dutchman told Sky Sports News. "I mean the first goal is for him to get fit and in the best shape possible.

"Training with a club like AC Milan will definitely improve his game even if it's only from a training point of view.

"But I don't know if he'll play, that's another thing completely."

Beckham's main motivation for moving to Italy is his determination to extend his England career, with manager Fabio Capello having warned he would miss the proposed friendly against Spain in February if he was inactive.

And Seedorf believes he has made the right decision.

He added: "He should focus on his physical state, train as hard as possible in a structure that's one of the best in the world to prepare for games with England which I think is his final goal and that's right.

"2010 is not that far away so he has to work hard and show Capello he's still here."

However, putting aside his doubts over whether Beckham will ever don the Milan shirt in a competitive game, Seedorf claims he is thrilled to welcome the former Manchester United and Real Madrid midfielder to the San Siro.

"I was in Albania for a friendly match when we found out," he said. "There was a lot of discussion about Beckham coming an we were all excited about how it would work, how he would fit in.

"Everyone is excited of course, we're looking forward to it.

"Personally I will help him out to achieve his goals, knowing that he's a great professional and he'll help us to do the same thing."

Ronaldinho is also excited at the prospect of Beckham joining the Rossoneri.

The Brazil playmaker, who has experience of playing against Beckham in El Clasico tussles between Barcelona and Real Madrid, has welcomed the opportunity to link up with the former England captain at the San Siro.

"I am very happy to know that he's coming," Ronaldinho told Setanta Sports News.

"He's going to help us a lot and I'm looking forward to helping him be the great player he is as well.

"I always like the way he plays. I always admired him and it's very cool to play with important people. It's always very motivating."

Ronaldinho and Beckham are regarded as two of the world's finest free-kick takers but the Brazilian refused to speculate on who will be handed set-piece duties with the Rossoneri.

He added: "That's not a problem, (although) it could be a problem for the team we're playing against.

"I hope to learn a lot with David Beckham."

Van Nistelrooy Out For Season

Real Madrid have confirmed Ruud van Nistelrooy will miss the remainder of the season after undergoing knee surgery.

The striker underwent surgery in 2000 before joining Manchester United from PSV Eindhoven.

The Dutchman flew to America to consult leading surgeon Richard Steadman, who had previously operated on him, and looks set to be sidelined for six to nine months.

"Following an exploratory arthroscopic operation on Wednesday, it was determined that Ruud van Nistelrooy had a partially torn meniscus in his right knee," Real Madrid stated on their official website.

"Real Madrid's medical staff, Dr. Steadman and the player decided to surgically repair the damaged knee, by which he will miss between six and nine months."

The 32-year-old aggravated the injury in October in their UEFA Champions League match against Juventus. Real could now be forced to bring in reinforcements up front in January.

Donovan Training With Bayern Munich

Directly after picking up his fifth Honda award, Los Angeles star Landon Donovan jetted off to begin a training stint with German giants Bayern Munich.

Though termed as a visit, some observers are wondering if the U.S. international isn't actually on trial with the Bavarians.

The club has previously inquired about Donovan with MLS, and coach Juergen Klinsmann formerly worked with the Galaxy.

"He's a good guy, a very good soccer player, and a big personality in American soccer," the Manager told Bayern's website. "He's training with us for 10 days to keep his fitness level."

Former L.A. general manager Alexi Lalas, on hand for the Honda ceremony, believes Donovan could be entering a great situation at Allianz Arena.

"If you're going to go to Germany, you might as well go to the super club," he told the Los Angeles Times. "It shows also his commitment to going to Europe that he's going over there on trial."

"If it ends up being Germany, he could do much worse."

Mourinho Rejects Man City Link

Inter Milan boss Jose Mourinho has dismissed reports linking him with a move to Manchester City.

The former Chelsea boss was reportedly being lined up to replace Mark Hughes at Eastlands, and with City now under the control of the super-rich Abu Dhabi United Group it has been suggested Mourinho could be tempted to take up the role.

But chairman Khaldoon Al Mubarak insisted on Monday that there were no plans to replace Hughes and that the former Blackburn boss would be given more money to spend in the January transfer window.

But while Mourinho, who left Chelsea in September of last year, makes no secret of the impression left on him by the Premier League, he is focused solely on his role at the San Siro.

He said: "Everybody knows I love English football, but everybody also knows I am Inter Milan coach."

Hargeaves out for rest of season

The England international traveled to Colorado for a meeting with renowned surgeon Dr Richard Steadman after being plagued by a tendinitis problem for almost two years.

And United have confirmed Hargreaves has had surgery on his right knee and will have a further operation on his left knee in a fortnight, ruling him out for the remainder of the campaign.

Although Hargreaves played in May's Champions League Final triumph over Chelsea in Moscow, his first season in the Premier League was blighted by injuries.

Ruled out of his first pre-season campaign following an £18million move from Bayern Munich, the 27-year-old sat out another this summer.

He has been restricted to just three appearances this term, one of them an effective performance against Chelsea at Stamford Bridge, and has become increasingly frustrated at a problem that would not go away.

Sir Alex Ferguson confirmed on Friday that Hargreaves had recently seen specialists in London and Sweden without being able to get the injury resolved, sparking fears his career might be in jeopardy.

Those doubts will not go away until Hargreaves has returned to action on a full-time basis.

However, in Steadman, the Calgary-born star knows he is in safe hands, even if most of his football-related work has been treating cruciate knee ligament injuries.

Hargreaves should have some company too as former United star Ruud van Nistelrooy has flown to see Steadman - the man who performed his own cruciate operation - for treatment on a knee injury that has recently surfaced.

Chivas closing in on Castillo

The Shakhtar Donetsk forward, currently on loan at Manchester City, has been training at the club this week because he has been unable to secure regular first-team football at City this season under manager Mark Hughes, who has told the player he does not feature in his plans at Eastlands.

Even though Castillo has already said playing at Guadalajara was not in his plans for the near future, De la Torre insisted the dream of having the striker for the semi-finals of the Copa Sudamericana and the Mexican Apertura play-offs is a realistic one.

"We have talked to Nery's agent (Juan Carlos Padilla) and we reached an agreement, so he will be the person to make negotiations easy to get the international documents soon," De la Torre told mediotiempo.com.

"The vice-president is very happy with this possibility. Nery can help us in both championships. He is a player who can play both championships."

De la Torre confirmed, if Castillo does sign for Guadalajara, the board will try to convince Mexico coach Sven-Goran Eriksson not to include him in the squad to play the World Cup qualifier against Honduras on November 19, as Guadalajara are playing the second leg of their Copa Sudamericana semi-final against Internacional of Brazil the same day.

"We will talk about this problem, but we are aware of the possibilities," De la Torre added.

This is the third attempt Guadalajara have made to sign Castillo, who has made only four starts for City since joining them in January.

Red Bulls Upset Defending Champs Houston

The Red Bulls pulled off a major upset this weekend, knocking out the two-time defending MLS Cup champion Houston Dynamo with a 3-0 win.

The Red Bulls wins the two-game series by an aggregate 4-1 margin.

Dane Richards opened the scoring in the 25th minute as he split the Dynamo defense and fired a shot over the top of the outstretched hands of Pat Onstad. Richards took a pass from Sinisa Ubiparipovic from about 30 years out and raced between Bobby Boswell and Wade Barrett and fired a shot from about 15 years out.

The Red Bulls took a 2-0 lead in the 36th minute on a Juan Pablo Angel penalty kick goal. It was Angel's second marker of the post-season when he drilled the penalty kick into the left corner. New York received the penalty kick when Dane Richards raced down the right side and tried a cross from just outside the box that caught Dynamo defender Ricardo Clark's hand. John Wolyniec capped the scoring with his first goal of the 2008 season finishing a Dane Richards cross from in close.

New York moves on to the Conference Finals for just the second time in franchise history. The last time was in 2000 when they faced the Chicago Fire. New York lost the three-game series to the Fire, who lost in the MLS Cup to Kansas City. The win today was New York's first playoff road since a 2-1 win in Dallas on September 20, 2000 by a 2-1 score.

Ronaldinho Happy With Milan Life

Ronaldinho revealed he is finally starting to settle at AC Milan after playing a starring role in their UEFA Cup success over Braga on Thursday.

The Brazilian, who moved to Italy from Barcelona in the summer, came off the bench to score deep in stoppage time and hand the Rossoneri a 1-0 triumph against the Portuguese side at the San Siro.

The result saw Milan retain top spot in Group E, three points clear of Wolfsburg and Braga.

"It was a difficult game," admitted Ronaldinho. "Sporting had not conceded a goal in seven European games and we knew it was going to be a challenging encounter.

"I am delighted to have contributed to this success.

"Every day that goes by I feel more at home in Milan. This is my new home and I feel very good here."

Thursday's result was Milans 11th victory in a row in all competitions.

Ronaldinho also struck the winner in last Sunday's 1-0 triumph over Napoli as the Rossoneri climbed to the top of the Serie A standings for the first time in four years.

"We really deserve these results," Ronaldinho added. "We are working very hard and in a serious manner."

It was an equally satisfying night for Serie A high-flyers Udinese, who won 2-1 at Spartak Moscow courtesy of Fabio Quagliarella's brace.

The win followed their 2-0 triumph against Tottenham in their Group D opener two weeks ago.

"This result is very important because it allows us to go into our next UEFA Cup games more at ease," said Udinese coach Pasquale Marino.

"I am very satisfied with the good performance given by my team against a very strong side."

Clint Dempsey's Future at Fulham is Uncertain

Fulham midfielder Clint Dempsey has ruled out the possibility of a loan move from Craven Cottage in the January transfer window, but has admitted he faces an uncertain future.

The American helped the Whites claim their first away point two weeks ago at Portsmouth, despite being reduced to a cameo role this season.

When Dempsey joined the Cottagers in January 2007 for GBP 2 million he was a record signing from the American MLS League, and the 25-year-old is aware his contract expires in July 2010.

If Fulham had to sell the player, it would most likely take place next summer.

"It is what it is," said Dempsey, "But I'm not going to go on loan. I have to try to make the most of the time that I play."

Dempsey admits he can't wait around forever under manager Roy Hodgson. "After this season I have a year left," he added. "Whether a team comes in and wants to get me out, we'll see.

"I'm just trying to prove to him that I deserve to be out there."

Fulham are in 16th position on the league table after 10 games and face Newcastle at St. James' Park on Sunday.

Zé Roberto Ignites FC Dallas Rumour

Veteran Bayern Munich midfielder Zé Roberto has heightened speculation he could join MLS side FC Dallas in January by confirming the club are still a main option.

The Brazilian could be ready to quit FC Hollywood in mid-season to place his family needs first, and the Pizza Hut Park crew could be the beneficiaries.

"(The talk) with America is very possible," Zé Roberto told Kicker. "Dallas is quite interesting, my kids can go to the international school there."

"As my career winds down, family is my main concern."

The 34-year old has won four Bundesliga crowns with Bayern, a Champions League title with Real Madrid and was a member of Brazil's World Cup squad in both 1998 and 2006.

Barca Advances to CL Elimination Round

Barcelona limped into the UEFA Champions League elimination round with a less than spectacular showing in their 1-1 draw with FC Basel 1893 at the Camp Nou on Tuesday evening.

Second half substitute Lionel Messi scored for the home side while Eren Derkiyok earned the Swiss side their first point from the competition.

Barca came into the match with an unblemished record that included a 5-0 win in the first leg against Basel. But the home side elected to rest Messi, Xavi Hernández and Samuel Eto'o and while they had some good opportunities they could not break through for an opening goal.

Basel’s goalkeeper Franco Costanzo deserves much of the credit for thwarting the Barca attack and keeping the game within reach.

With the game still deadlocked Messi came on and made an immediate impact, scoring two minutes after being announced. The Argentinean international picked up a loose ball and went on the attack, trading passes with Thierry Henry before slotting home in the 62nd minute. The goal was his fourth in UEFA Champions League action.

Barcelona appeared to be headed to another victory when Basel replacement Derkiyok spoiled the party with a volley in the 82nd minute. The goal mattered little as Barca still secured their place in the elimination round following Sporting Club of Portugal’s 1-0 win over FC Shakhtar Donetsk

The bad news for Barca, however, was that Andrés Iniesta limped off with a troubling thigh injury.
