Villarreal Hold Man U to 0-0 Draw
Villarreal held Machester United to a 0-0 draw in Champions League action at El Madrigal on Tuesday evening.
Cristiano Ronaldo was the most dangerous player on the pitch but despite several good efforts could not sway the result.
With the draw the two sides have booked their place in the elimination round sitting squarely on 9 points. Manchester United holds the upper hand and currently are on top of the table headed into the final matchday.
Ronaldo caused problems all evening for the home side. The Portuguese international almost opened the scoring late in the first half when his volley was on target only for Villarreal goalkeeper Diego López to parry the ball onto the crossbar.
Lopez was called on throughout the match and did well in facing 9 shots on goal. Manchester United’s counterpart Tomasz Kuszczak was not as tested but held his own when called on.
Villarreal were forced to play with 10 men over the final 8 minutes of regulation when Joan Capdevila was shown a straight red card for a harsh tackle on Ronaldo. Despite the late sending off, Capdevila was one of the heros having headed a goal bound ball off the line and over the bar to preserve the draw.
Group E will be decided on Matchday 6 when United host Aalborg BK and Villarreal travel to play Celtic in Scotland. The Premier side has the upper hand only needing to match the result of Villarral to book the top spot in the group.
