Drogba Lost Passion for the Game

Chelsea striker Didier Drogba admits he has lost some of the passion he had for football this season.

"This summer, I no longer had a head for football, I'd completely lost the fire" he told France Football magazine.

"I felt completely extinguished. For the first time in my career, I'd lost the passion for football. I was lost."

The Ivory Coast international says he also understands why team-mate Nicolas Anelka has been prefered to start ahead of him in recently."For the moment, I can only keep quiet," he added.

"It is not because I have been here for more than four years that I have a right to make demands to be in the starting line-up.

"At the moment, there's a guy who is hot and racking up goals. I must wait my turn."

However, the 30-year-old Drogba also feels that manager Luiz Felipe Scolari should combine him with Anelka in attack more often.

"I have always said that I was happy that Nicolas came to Chelsea but I still cannot understand why managers are afraid to put us together," said Drogba.

Dempsey's Double Earns Draw with Chelsea

Two goals from Clint Dempsey secured a 2-2 draw for Fulham at Craven Cottage on Sunday against Premier League title chasers Chelsea.

The Cottagers took an unexpected lead when Dempsey sneaked in unmarked at the far post following Simon Davies' curling free-kick from the left which avoided all the Chelsea defenders.

Luiz Felipe Scolari brought Nicolas Anelka on after only 30 minutes in an attempt to provide his side more attacking options to wipe out the one-goal deficit.

Scolari's talk at the break seemed to do the trick as The Blues equalized through Frank Lampard only five minutes into the second half. Some unconvincing defending in the Fulham goal saw Mark Schwarzer collide with Aaron Hughes, while the ball found Lampard who took full advantage of the opportunity and netted it.

Chelsea took the lead for the first time as Lampard scored his second, this time he powered home a trademark free-kick which swung late to find the bottom right corner of a despairing Schwarzer's goal.

However, the Cottagers kept fighting to the final whistle and were rewarded when Dempsey scored his brace with a magnificent header from another pin-point set-piece delivery from Davies.

Fabregas Injury Could Open Wenger Wallet

Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger admits he might spend in January following Cesc Fabregas' knee injury.

The Gunners' captain suffered a partial rupture to his medial ligament during Sunday's 1-1 draw with Liverpool, and may be sidelined for up to four months.

"The news is not good," Wenger said. "It will take three to four months, we count four. He will be working hard to come back earlier but I count four months."

Reports have speculated that Wenger is interested in Zenit St Petersburg playmaker Andre Arshavin, but he has not confirmed the rumours.

"It is more likely but we also have internal solutions and we are not desperate," Wenger said.

"We will miss him, of course, but how much is difficult to say," Wenger added.

"We have to find a way and we want to find a way to compensate the fact that he is not on the pitch to give everyone a bit more.

"I'm sure we can deal with it. When he comes back he can help us get over the line in the final months. I believe we are able to do it."

Owen Says He's Staying At Newcastle

Newcastle striker Michael Owen has addressed speculation about his future, saying he will stay at St James' Park until at least the end of the season.

Owen has been linked with a number of high profile Premier League clubs, prompting rumours he would leave the Magpies during the January transfer window.

The England international said: "Following speculation about my future at Newcastle United, I have decided to make it clear that I am committed to the club until at least the end of this season, and I have informed them I do not want to make a decision about my future until that time.

"I hope this will be seen as a positive step and not seen as being disloyal in any way.

"I am happy here and enjoy the challenge. It is simply a matter of seriously thinking about my future as I was 29 last week and my next career decision is a crucial one.

"My decision is not about money. I told the club some months ago that I would accept a reduction in my wages.

"I have no intention of leaving Newcastle United during the January transfer window and want to assure the fans that under Joe Kinnear's passionate management, I am committed with the rest of the players to ensure that the club ends the season on a high."

Ancelotti Ready To Play Beckham

AC Milan coach Carlo Ancelotti insists David Beckham will come into contention for a starting berth when his side face Roma on January 11.

Beckham watched as his new club demolished Udinese 5-1 on Sunday to move into third position in Serie A with a stylish performance at the San Siro.

The England international officially becomes a Milan player on January 7 and, four days later, he could make his debut in the Italian capital.

"Certainly there is a place for him because he is a great player," Ancelotti said.

"He is very well-prepared tactically and he can give a contribution to this team.

"He is in good condition and if he is one of the 11 names on the team sheet, then it is because he deserves to be there.

"I met with him this morning and he has been welcomed very well. We are all delighted to have him here.

"We are all happy because what we have got is a great professional."

Compared to yesterday's media presentation, the arrival of Beckham on the field at the San Siro prior to kick-off was a rather low-key affair.

The England international walked to the centre of the field to mutter the words Forza Milan to a half-empty stadium.

His arrival in January is expected to boost ticket sales for at least two months in a league which, despite the arrivals of Ronaldinho and Jose Mourinho, appears to be losing its appeal.

If tonight's finale to the calendar year is a sign of things to come, it won't be just the arrival of Beckham which will have the crowds flocking back in the new year.

"Everything went well for us today," admitted Ancelotti, who still expects more from his side in 2009.

"I think it is fundamental to have a break now and the work we do in the break will allow us to gain more energy and get some players back into a good condition.

"The break will allow us to make a leap forward in terms of quality."

Ten-Man Gunners Hold Liverpool

Liverpool missed a chance to go four points clear at the top of the Premier League table following a tight 1-1 draw with ten-man Arsenal.

Reds manager Rafael Benitez did not travel to the Emirates Stadium following surgery to remove kidney stones and assistant Sammy Lee stepped in.

Arsenal took the lead after 24 minutes from Dutch striker Robin Van Persie - who fired a powerful shot past Reds goalkeeper Pepe Reina with his weaker right foot.

Liverpool looked short of the clinical midfield passing that has seen them dramatically improve their domestic form.

And it took a speculative long ball from Alvaro Arbeloa to open up the Gunners' defense. Big money signing Robbie Keane pounced on the loose ball and thundered a volley past Manuel Almunia.

Arsenal were reduced to ten-men with 30 minutes remaining in the second-half when referee Howard Webb gave striker Emmanuel Adebayor a second-yellow for a clumsy challenge on Arbeloa.

Liverpool were unable to make the most of the numerical advantage as the game ended all square.

Sir Alex Blasts Real Madrid Ronaldo Claims

Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson has unleashed an attack on Real Madrid after the club claimed Cristiano Ronaldo will move to Spain in January.

Ferguson thought Real would halt their pursuit of the Ballon D'Or winner after he convinced Ronaldo to remain at Old Trafford last summer, but Real director Pedro Trapote has stated a deal has been agreed for the player.

However, the Red Devils' boss has responded sharply to Trapote's comments saying he would never do business with Real.

"Do you think I would enter into a contract with that mob?" he said.

"No chance. I would not sell them a virus.

"That is a 'no' by the way. There is no agreement whatsoever between the clubs."

Ferguson added: "I said to (chief executive) David Gill a year last summer when we sold Gabriel Heinze he could bet his life this stuff will all start up around Ronaldo in January. It will happen again this January.

"We just have to ignore it. If we worry about what Real Madrid have to say we are not concentrating on our own publicity and the program of difficult games we have got coming up.

"Sometimes they create an angry situation and sometimes I get really annoyed with them. But we know their game. I think we should play ours and ignore them."

Crew Stadium To Host U.S. vs Mexico WCQ'er

For the third consecutive time in final round qualifying for the FIFA World Cup, U.S. Soccer has selected Columbus Crew Stadium to host the home leg between the United States and Mexico on Feb. 11th.

The match in Columbus is the first of five qualifiers in the Final Round to be played in the United States. Ticketing details will be announced in the near future.

“We are very excited about returning to Columbus,” said U.S. head coach Bob Bradley, who guided the U.S. to a 7-1-0 record through the first two rounds of FIFA World Cup qualifying. “The national team has enjoyed a great history there, and the team has always appreciated the fantastic support from the fans. We are looking forward to an incredible atmosphere as we continue the difficult task of qualifying for the 2010 World Cup in South Africa.”

The Columbus Crew Stadium match will be the sixth World Cup qualifier hosted by the nine-year-old venue. The U.S. has a 3-0-2 record in qualifying and an unbeaten 4-0-3 all-time record in the stadium. In the first meeting on Feb. 28, 2001 – dubbed the “Guerra Fria (‘Cold War’)” because the game-time temperature topped out at 29 degrees - goals by Josh Wolff and Earnie Stewart paced the U.S. to a 2-0 victory. Four years later on Sept. 3, 2005, goals by Steve Ralston and DaMarcus Beasley earned the United States another 2-0 win and officially booked their place in the 2006 FIFA World Cup in Germany.

The match on Feb. 11 will mark the 55th meeting between the USA and Mexico. The U.S. has dominated the series of late, collecting an 8-0-2 home record against Mexico since 2000. During that span, the USA has netted 17 goals, while the Mexicans have scored only three on American soil in this decade.

The U.S., along with Costa Rica, El Salvador, Honduras, Mexico, and Trinidad & Tobago, is competing in the 10-game round-robin format through Oct. 14, 2009, with the top three teams automatically advancing to the 2010 FIFA World Cup in South Africa. The fourth-place team will compete in a two-game playoff to be held Nov. 14/18 against the fifth-place finisher in South American qualifying.

Manchester United Advance to Club WC Final

Wayne Rooney came off the bench to score a brace as Manchester United beat Gamba Osaka 5-3 to book their place in the Club World Cup final.

United went into the break with a comfortable 2-0 lead after Nemanja Vidic and Cristiano Ronaldo both headed the Red Devils ahead.

And Rooney's introduction led to a frenetic period which saw six goals in 18 minutes, with the England international netting either side of Darren Fletcher's strike as the Premier League champions kept a resistant Gamba at bay.

Osaka's goals came through Masato Yamazaki, Yasuhito Endo's spot-kick and Hideo Hashimoto.

Scolari Unhappy With Chelsea's Home Form

(Soccer365.com) Chelsea boss Luis Felipe Scolari believes they need to improve their home form if they wish to secure the Premier League title.

The Blues failed to win their third successive home game against a struggling West Ham on Sunday, earning a solitary point from the 1-1 draw at Stamford Bridge.

The result prevented the London club from usurping Liverpool at the top of the table. A statistic not lost on the home supporters who voiced their frustrations at the end of 90 minutes.

Scloari says he is also frustrated with his side's unconvincing home form, but pleaded for patience from the expectant supporters.

"I understand what the fans gave us," said Scolari on the Sporting Life website.

"But the fans need to understand that players try their best every time and do not want to draw or lose. But sometimes we don't have the quality.

"It is important for us to win at home but at the moment we are playing better away.

"We need to win one, two or three games at home and sometimes the players have to try something different."

He added: "In the last 10 minutes we changed our football in the penalty area and I didn't want that."

Michael Owen Eyeing Out A Move

Newcastle boss Joe Kinnear admits it is unlikely that Michael Owen will stay with the club.

On Tuesday, Kinnear will enter negotiations with Owen as well as a number of other players approaching the end of their respective contracts.

According to the Magpies boss, he could have his hands full in persuading the England striker to stay at St James' Park.

"I'm not confident, to be honest. I'm going to sit down with Michael on Tuesday," he said on the Sporting Life website.

"I'm pretty confident about everybody else, but Michael is a different kettle of fish.

"He is looking at his options, I assume, but I won't go into those details until Tuesday," he said.

Schuster Out, Ramos In at Real Madrid

Real Madrid have sacked Bernd Schuster as manager and replaced him with former Tottenham boss Juande Ramos until the end of the season.

The 54-year-old will lead the Spanish side for the first time on Wednesday evening for their Champions League match at home to Zenit St Petersburg.

Real are currently fifth in the Primera Liga, nine points behind Barcelona who they face on Saturday. And after a 4-3 loss to Sevilla at home on Sunday, there is not a lot of hope in them beating Barca.

Goalkeeper Iker Casillas admitted the team's form had taken a massive dip, saying: "At the moment the team isn't capable of winning trophies because Barcelona lead us by nine points and it's true that they're playing well."

"We are going through a bad run. Defensively we are vulnerable, and I'm the first (to blame).

"At the moment it seems that our opponents will have three chances and score three goals and it's clear that we are all to blame.

"I have been 10 seasons in the Primera Liga and this, for now, is the worst start I have had."

US WNT wins the U-20 World Cup

The U.S. Under-20 Women’s National Team got goals from Sydney Leroux and Alex Morgan, both first-half strikes from outside the penalty area, to defeat Korea DPR 2-1 and win the 2008 FIFA Under-20 Women’s World Cup.

For Leroux, it was her fifth goal of the tournament as she earned the Golden Shoe as the tournamen’s top scorer. She also won the Golden Ball as the tournament’s top player, just the second American to earn that honor along with Carin Jennings, who was the top player at the 1991 FIFA Women’s World Cup in China.

Morgan’s goal, which proved to be the eventual game-winner, was her fourth goal of the tournament. Morgan won the Bronze Ball as the tournament’s third-best player and the Bronze Shoe as the third-leading scorer.

The U.S. defense, which allowed a tournament-low three goals in six games, played yet another superb match, allowing North Korea’s lone score with just 90 seconds left in second half stoppage time. It was the only goal allowed during the five matches played by U.S. goalkeeper Alyssa Naeher, who was awarded the Golden Glove as the best ‘keeper in the tournament. The U.S. capped the historic win by taking the FIFA Fair Play award.

“I’d like to congratulate North Korea on a wonderful effort,” said U.S. head coach Tony DiCicco. “It was obviously very difficult for us to hold onto the lead because they kept coming at us and giving us trouble possessing the ball, but I am very, very proud of my players tonight. We won because we played very good defense throughout this tournament and because Sydney Leroux and Alex Morgan scored as many goals as they did.”

The USA scored 12 goals in the tournament, a combined nine from Leroux and Morgan as well as one each from midfielders Becky Edwards and Keelin Winters. The USA’s game-winning goal against Germany in the semifinal was originally credited to Leroux, who forced the goal on a hustling play, but it was later changed to an own goal.

North Korea started the match strong and was the aggressor in the early going, forcing several turnovers in the midfield, but Choe Un Ju and Cha Hu Nam were forced to take shots from long distance that gave Naeher little trouble. Naeher finished the night with six saves, seeing by far the most action of the tournament.

After the initial pressure from the Asian champions, the U.S. settled into their rhythm and in the 23rd minute struck first. A deflected shot from Morgan was poorly cleared and bounced to Keelin Winters who was about 30 yards from the goal. Winters’ deft first-time touch to Leroux was settled perfectly and she quickly wheeled toward goal and struck a side-footed shot into the right side of the net from 18 yards out.

“It’s an absolutely amazing feeling,” said Leroux. “I’ve never felt like this before in my life. After the game we were all crying because it just felt so amazing. I’m so happy with my team and the way we played the whole way through. We’ve gone through a lot together and to go to the final and have the gold medals around our necks is just amazing.”

Minutes after scoring, Leroux was back on the attack as she got on the end of a long ball. She took a shot from the top of the box that nearly snuck into the near post under the diving Kim Un Ju. Morgan was also dangerous throughout the opening half, creating opportunities for her teammate and drawing numerous fouls. Set pieces were plentiful in the match, which saw North Korea commit 17 fouls to the USA’s five.

Just three minutes before halftime, Morgan tallied the crucial goal when she doubled the USA’s lead on a remarkable individual dribbling run after receiving a throw-in from Elli Reed near the right sideline.

Morgan settled the bouncing ball as she spun around a defender and took off toward goal. She spilt two more defenders with lengthy strides, but then almost lost the ball as a North Korea defender came hard into the tackle. She was able to keep control, then beat another defender with a quick move to the inside before sliding to smack a 26-yard shot with her left foot. The ball flew over Kim and into the upper left corner for what surely was one of the best goals in the nine world championship finals the American women have played in during their history.

“I think we were happy with a 1-0 lead, but once it became 2-0 I think we realized that we weren’t going to lose this one,” said Morgan. “We stepped it up after the first goal and we didn’t let them come back.”

Even with a two-goal advantage the U.S. continued to push and at times it looked like the USA would be more likely to get a third before North Korea got its first. Midfielder Christine Nairn, the USA’s youngest player, was dangerous from distance in the first half, forcing Kim into two difficult saves. Nikki Washington, who gave U.S. opponents trouble all tournament long down the right flank with her speed and creativity, forced a turnover in the 53rd minute. She then sprung Leroux down the right side, but her shot from a tough angle was scooped up by Kim.

The Leroux and Morgan duo nearly netted another in the 64th minute as Morgan chased down a ball in the corner. She took on a defender and sent the ball into the box for Leroux, but her shot was blocked away by a defender.

With time ticking away, North Korea stepped up its pressure and created a number of dangerous opportunities before finally putting away a goal in the 92nd minute on a nice volley from Cha Hu Nam. That proved to be too little, too late for the North Koreans, who did not get another good chance. Seconds after the goal the referee blew the final whistle, giving the USA its second world title at this age level.

The USA won the first-ever FIFA U-19 Women’s World Cup in 2002, took third in 2004, and finished fourth at the first U-20 Women’s World Cup in 2006.

The U.S. triumph also capped a remarkable year for the U.S. Women’s National Team programs, which advanced to the championship game of all three FIFA women’s tournaments this year, winning the 2008 Olympics and finishing second at the 2008 FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup. The victory for the U-20s makes the United States the first country to win two women’s world titles in the same calendar year.

The victory also completed a historic treble of sorts for DiCicco, who led the full U.S. Women’s National Team to the 1996 Olympic gold medal as well as the ground-breaking 1999 FIFA Women’s World Cup title.

Ronaldinho Almost a City Man

AC Milan playmaker Ronaldinho has revealed he almost moved to Manchester City over the summer.

The Blues were after the Brazilian's signature throughout the pre-season and reports suggested the Eastlands club were the front-runners to sign him.

City pursued the 28-year-old for months after he became unpopular at Barcelona, but in the end they were beaten to it by Italian juggernauts AC Milan.

However, Ronaldinho has admitted he was very tempted to move to a Premier League side.

He told FourFourTwo magazine: "My brother spoke to Manchester City many times."

"Their project is the kind that would interest any player - they could soon be among the best sides in England.

"Lots of brilliant players are heading in their direction and yes, my brother looked properly at their offer.

"But Silvio Berlusconi (Milan owner) had been saying for years that he would like to sign me and I felt in the end that it was the right time to say yes."

Real Madrid to sign Huntelaar

Spanish champions Real Madrid have confirmed Ajax forward Klaas Jan Huntelaar will join the club in January.

The 25-year-old, who has long been linked with a move to Madrid, will sign a deal with the capital club until June 2013 subject to passing a medical.

According to the Ajax website, Huntelaar will join Real on January 2 for an initial 20million euros (£17m), rising to a potential 27million euros (£23m).

In a statement released on the Real Madrid website the club confirmed the signing.

It read: "Huntelaar is the new Real Madrid player. Real Madrid and Ajax Amsterdam have reached an agreement for the forward.

"As is usual, the deal is dependent on the player passing a medical and the signing of his contract with Real Madrid.

"Klaas Jan Huntelaar will be tied to Real Madrid until June 30, 2013."

Huntelaar is currently sidelined by an ankle injury which is set to rule him out until early 2009.

UEFA rules state that once the deal is completed Huntelaar can be eligible to be added to Madrid's squad for the Champions League, as he has only competed with Ajax this season in the UEFA Cup.

The deal, which will provide Real with cover for long-term injury victim Ruud van Nistelrooy, will earn Dutch club Heerenveen around 2.5million euros as part of the agreement Ajax signed when they signed the player in 2005.

Robinho Wants City to Think Bigger

Manchester City star Robinho says his team mates need to change their mindset if they hope to compete with the top four.

The Brazilian believes the team are capable of competing for silverware but thinks they lack the correct mindset.

He said: "City have good players but the mentality of a small side. They lack the mentality of champions.

"They are content with just finishing fifth or sixth. They are content with little, thinking just a draw might be good enough.

"I have learnt that being second is worthless so I want to inspire a winning mentality.

"You can only be content with winning. You need to want to beat Chelsea, Manchester United and Liverpool.

"Maybe I have changed this a bit but now City have a project to become big, the mentality has to change."
