Arena Laughs Off Owen Talk

Los Angeles Galaxy boss Bruce Arena has responded with sarcasm at the thought of signing Newcastle superstar striker Michael Owen.

With Landon Donovan looking more and more like a Bayern Munich buy, various reports linked the England forward with a Major League Soccer move last week.

"I can promise you we have had zero contact with him, so there's probably zero percent accuracy in that report," Arena told Sports Illustrated before turning sly.

"You can't react to every press report; Owen, Del Piero, they'll all fitting beautifully under our salary cap," he cracked.

"Is there anything about me in these rumors, Chelsea or anyone? I'm hoping for a Ronaldinho or Messi rumor - That would be nice."

ManUtd Get Back On Top

A brace from Cristiano Ronaldo rounded off a 5-0 demolition of West Brom at the Hawthorns on Tuesday, pushing United three clear of Liverpool in the Premier League title race.

United took the lead through Dimitar Berbatov after a one-two with Michael Carrick put the Bulgarian in space on the right, and he made the finish look easy as he placed the ball past Scott Carson.

The Baggies suffered a massive blow when their captain Paul Robinson was sent off with a straight red card after a reckless two-footed challenge on Park Ji Sung. However, many felt referee Rob Styles' decision was a harsh one as there was no apparent malice in the tackle.

A dreadful mistake by Carson gifted the Red Devils with their second goal as a free-kick from Ryan Giggs was collected by the goalkeeper, then dropped at the feet of Carlos Tevez who took the chance with glee.

Nemanja Vidic ensured that United would be three points clear of Liverpool at the final whistle when he scored the third goal of the match. Giggs swung in a corner from the right and the Serbian glanced a header into the hapless hosts' net.

However, the Premier League leaders were not done yet as they increased the home fans' humiliation by scoring two more before the end.

Ronaldo was the man who emphasized the victory by netting twice within eight minutes. The first saw the Portugal international run onto a pin-point Giggs cross and his brace was secured when he combined with Berbatov and slid the ball between Carson's legs from close range.

Milan Waiting On Galaxy

AC Milan general manager Adriano Galliani admits his club are still waiting for any sign from the Los Angeles Galaxy that they may be able to keep hold of David Beckham beyond March 9.

The England midfielder joined the Serie A side on a short-term loan earlier this month and is due back in the United States in time for the start of the Major League Soccer season.

But he has impressed so far in Italy, playing in all three of Milan's games this year and opening his account for the club on Sunday.

While Milan would be keen to keep hold of him, Galliani insists the Rossoneri will respect Beckham's contractual obligation with the MLS club, unless the player himself chooses to change the situation.

"If the Los Angeles Galaxy were to decide not to release him, then they won't release him," Galliani told Sky TV.

"In America, they have the same rules as European football: The player has a contract. But having said that, we'll have to wait and see.

"If he decides to release himself and wants to do so, we would welcome him with open arms.

"But he belongs to another club and we have to thank them because they have been very kind to us.

"On March 9, his contract with us terminates and we cannot be discourteous and we don't want to either.

"The player wants to stay with us, but even he knows that he has got to return to America."

Beckham appears to have settled in well in his new surroundings and knows his future in the England national team could hinge on his decision.

England coach Fabio Capello is due to watch him in action for the Rossoneri in their Serie A clash with Genoa tomorrow night and Beckham is aware how much more exposure he would receive in Italy compared to the States.

This is why he is believed to be contemplating bringing a premature end to the lucrative contract which ties him to US football, even if it would involve a financial sacrifice.

And Galliani says Milan would be willing to soften the blow of any loss in earnings.

"If Beckham reaches an agreement with the Galaxy, we would be prepared to pay a certain sum," he revealed.

"Anyway, in the next few days we will be meeting with his manager."

Beckham Considering Milan Stay?

David Beckham has hinted he could stay at AC Milan beyond the end of his loan spell.

The England midfielder is due to return to the Los Angeles Galaxy in March and all parties have always insisted he will be back in America for the new Major League Soccer season.

However, shortly after scoring his first goal for the Rossoneri, Beckham admitted anything could happen.

"I can't say what will happen," he said. "Even if my contract says that I'll be here until March. We'll have to see.

"At the moment I'm enjoying this experience. I'm at one of the biggest clubs in the world. And having won gives us confidence to continue."

Beckham enjoyed arguably his best performance in a Milan shirt on Sunday and scored his first goal for the club on the hour mark as he helped them to a 4-1 victory at Bologna.

The former Manchester United player was delighted to get off the mark at his new club.

"It's great to score my first goal - I will keep this jersey," he said. "But it's more important the team won and we played well.

"It's special to play for Milan and also to score, but what's most important is that we won."

Milan coach Carlo Ancelotti was delighted with Beckham's performance, but insists the club can do nothing to keep him at the San Siro.

However, he claims the 33-year-old holds his future in his own hands.

"If he said 'we'll see' it means he's thinking about staying," Ancelotti told Sky Italia. "However, our hands are tied as he has a clear contract.

"We can't do anything to change things, he can surely do so. He has to resolve his contract with the American team.

"I am realistic, we are capitalizing on his presence at the moment and so, while we have him at our disposal, we will try to do things the best way possible."

Kljestan Hat Trick Leads US over Sweden

Sacha Kljestan scored the 11th hat trick ever for the U.S. Men’s National Team Saturday evening to earn a 3-2 victory against Sweden to open their 2009 campaign.

In a fairly tepid first 45 minutes, Kljestan provided the U.S. with a 2-0 lead going into the locker room. His first goal was a stunning 35-yard free kick that he placed perfectly into the upper left corner, before following up that effort by burying a penalty kick with five minutes remaining in the half.

With Sweden pulling a goal back in the 73rd minute, it was Kljestan once again who answered for the U.S., taking a feed from Brian Ching to bury a left-footed shot just one minute later. In the 89th minute, Sweden struck again to make things interesting, but the U.S. was able to kill off any last minute attacks for an equalizer.

The three goals by Kljestan were the first of his career with the full team, and put him in unique company as only the second player ever to open his national team scoring account with a hat trick. The only other player to pull off the feat was Aldo “Buff” Donelli, who tallied four goals in a 4-2 victory against Mexico on May 24, 1934, in the lone qualifying match for the 1934 FIFA World Cup in Italy.

“Getting a hat trick is pretty exciting for me,” said Kljestan. “I’ve never scored more than one goal in a game as a professional, so it’s definitely exciting. I’m just as happy about the win and I’m glad we held on in the end. It was great to do it [score a hat trick] here at the Home Depot Center. I have a lot of friends and family that come and support me every game, so that was pretty cool to have them here.”

The victory kept the U.S. undefeated in eight matches at The HDC (7-0-1) and was the eleventh straight time the U.S. has either tied or won their opening game of the year, with the U.S. also defeating Sweden 1-0 to start the streak in 1998. Overall against Sweden, the U.S. now holds a winning record with four victories and three losses in seven games.

Despite a fairly inexperienced roster, the U.S. was able to control the majority of the match and provide an effective attack, especially in the second half. Of the 18 players on the roster, 13 had less than 10 career caps, and six of the starters chosen by U.S. head coach Bob Bradley had less than 5 caps, including two – goalkeeper Troy Perkins and midfielder Robbie Rogers – who earned their first caps on the night.

The slow and controlled beginning of the match was jarred awake by Kljestan with his stunning free kick in the 17th minute that gave the U.S. the early lead. Ching, the leading U.S. capwinner on the roster (33), was brought down by Marcus Lindberg about 30 yards out and on the free kick Rogers ran over the ball allowing Kljestan to unleash his drive into the upper-left corner of the goal.

The U.S. continued to control most of the possession and doubled their lead near the end of the half with some nice possession play that led to a penalty kick. The ball was knocked out wide right where Ching was able to collect the ball and touch it to John Thorrington along the sideline. With Marvell Wynne involved in the attack, Thorrington slipped the ball through for him and he took one touch to get into the penalty area before getting tripped up by Adam Johansson. Kljestan stepped up to bury the penalty shot to the right of the goal as Dahlin went the opposite direction.

During the first half, the U.S. was able to thwart Sweden’s attack as captain Danny Califf and fellow central defender Michael Parkhurst controlled the backline, while midfielder Ricardo Clark also broke up numerous attacks. Wynne and Jonathan Bornstein were also staunch in their defending on the wings, while also choosing wisely when to dart up the sideline and join in the attack. Overall in the first half, Sweden only had two shots, and just one on goal, which came from Mikael Dahlberg in the 24th minute, a 18-yard effort towards the lower left post that Perkins was able to cover with ease.

Kenny Cooper came on to replace Charlie Davies to start the second half, and the 6-foot-3 forward almost tallied two minutes in when he got his head to a Rogers corner kick. The header got past Dahlin, who had challenged for the service, but Lindberg was able to clear it off the line and over the bar.

Despite controlling much of the play, Sweden pulled one back when Alexander Farnerud supplied a service into the penalty area for Daniel Nannskog, who lost Bornstein at the right post and finished past Perkins with a diving header.

The U.S. was quick to respond a minute later. Once again it was Kljestan getting the accolades with the finish, but the set-up by Ching was what provided the U.S. breathing room once again. Following a long ball from the back from Califf, Ching brought the ball down with an impressive first touch at the top of the penalty area between two defenders which allowed him to turn and then slip the ball to the left for the streaking Kljestan, who slammed his one-timer into the right side netting.

The action continued with Sweden getting another great opportunity a few minutes later, but Dahlberg’s header from six yards out bounced in front of the goal and bounced over the bar.

Sweden did tally their second goal of the night when Farnerud served in another dangerous cross and this time Dahlberg didn’t miss the opportunity, heading it off the right post and into the net.

Cooper had one final chance to give the U.S. another two-goal lead, when he slipped behind the Sweden defense for a breakaway against Dahlin, but his touch around the ‘keeper was too much and Dahlin was able to recover and make the save on his shot from a tight angle.

“It’s important to start the year off with a win,” said Bradley, who opened the calendar year with a victory for the third straight time since taking over in late 2006. “When you’re in a long camp, with three weeks and a lot of work, it’s nice at the end to have the reward of winning. From a coaching standpoint there’s always going to be things, at this time of year, that you feel good about, and there’s always going to be things that need improvement.”

Chris Wingert was the third player to earn his first cap with the MNT on the evening, coming on as a 79th-minute substitute for Bornstein.

The U.S. now looks ahead to their opening match of the final round of FIFA World Cup qualifying against arch-rival Mexico on Feb. 11 at Columbus Crew Stadium in Columbus, Ohio. Tickets for the USA-Mexico match go on sale Wednesday, Jan. 28 at 12 p.m. ET.

Giggs: This is Best ManUtd Squad Ever

Manchester United stalwart Ryan Giggs believes the current group are the best United team ever.

Giggs was a member of the squad that won the treble for the Red Devils in 1999, but he reckons the current crop if players is better.

The Welshman said: "Last year, we won the Champions League and the Premier League, and we won them in great style.

"But to talk of a great team, you need six or seven consecutive years of dominance.

"This side is good enough to do that, because all our young players can improve. Basically, I think this year we have the best United team ever."

He added: "There is always a lot of attention on us and during a season, every team has a tricky period.

"We knew it would be a very awkward start with some difficult games, but since then, we've been playing much better. Hopefully, we can keep up the momentum."

Kaka Reveals Reasons For Staying

AC Milan star Kaka has explained his reasoning behind rejecting Manchester City's record-breaking transfer approach.

City offered in excess of GBP 100million for the 26-year-old, but the deal fell through on Monday when Milan owner Silvio Berlusconi revealed that Kaka was staying.

The Brazilian says he is delighted to stay at the Rossoneri and insists that money would not affect his future.

"I feel great in a place where everybody loves me and I'm very happy to stay," he told Italian TV.

"My family were great allowing me to take the decision independently. I never argued with my father, as somebody wrote. I have listened to my heart as many people advised me to do.

"At Milan there are many wonderful people like (Berlusconi) and Leonardo, who is much more than a director for me, he is a real friend.

"I have never asked for a raise in my salary and I will never do. Milan were always nice to me raising my salary whenever they felt it was fair to do it. I can only thank them for this.

"After Saturday's game many people showed me their support, I have received drawings by kids trying to convince me to stay. It was wonderful. I remember when I left Sao Paolo some fans protested against me, here they all stand by my side instead.

"I'm currently celebrating this decision at home with a couple of friends.

"I'm a religious person and I believe the path God decides for us is not always the most logical one.

"Milan had never considered any offer for me in the past. This time it was different and I had to think about it but then I decided to stay. My team-mates were incredible. They all tried to tell me something and stay close to me in this period.

"I haven't been a Manchester City player not even for one minute."

Donovan Opens Bayern Account

Landon Donovan opened his Bayern Munich account in the Bundesliga side’s 3-1 win over Al Wheda, one of the Saudi Arabia’s oldest clubs. The U.S. international scored in injury time.

“It was a good goal and it’ll give him a boost,“ commented coach Jürgen Klinsmann on the Bayern Munich official website.

Donovan was a second half substitute and looked good up front, coming close twice including putting one off the crossbar.

Maradona Believes Tevez Could Move

Diego Maradona believes Carlos Tevez may be on the verge of leaving Manchester United and the Argentina coach recommends Inter Milan as his future club.

Tevez has fallen out of favour with Sir Alex Ferguson this season and remained on the bench during United's 3-0 win over title rivals Chelsea.

Maradona was at Old Trafford for the match on Sunday and was troubled about Tevez's exclusion.

He told Corriere dello Sport: "I saw Manchester United win without Tevez. This isn't good for him.

"Certain episodes are certainly bringing closer his exit. Italy and Inter in particular would be excellent solutions.

"What's more, his contract is running out, which makes it easier to change team."

ManUtd Cruise Past Chelsea 3-0

Manchester United gave Chelsea a 3-0 thrashing at Old Trafford on Sunday, with Nemanja Vidic nodding the home side ahead in the dying minutes of the first half.

The Red Devils looked the more comfortable side in the opening stages of the match, although Darren Fletcher handed the Blues a free kick in a dangerous area for a clumsy tackle on Deco. Michael Ballack scuffed his subsequent effort into the wall.

Cristiano Ronaldo was next with a set-piece in perfect territory, smashing it powerfully toward goal, but it took a deflection on the way and headed out wide.

The game drove on at a pace and it was evident both teams were hungry for a win, but it did have its scrappy moments with four yellow cards being shown by the 30th minute.

United finally grabbed the lead on the stroke of half time. The hosts looked to have put themselves ahead through Ronaldo's headed effort off a corner, but the referee disallowed the goal as it had been taken too quickly. Ryan Giggs sent another ball in and Vidic headed it into the back of the net to grab the advantage.

And Wayne Rooney made it two in the 63rd minute, slotting home a cross from Patrice Evra through the legs of Petr Cech in goal.

With three minutes remaining, Dimitar Berbatov put the final nail in the coffin, stabbing the ball into the back of the net from close range off a free kick from Ronaldo on the left flank.

Everton Chasing Altidore?

Everton are reportedly interested in American striker Jozy Altidore. The Toffees are keen to bolster their strikeforce in the January transfer window, but manager David Moyes has already insisted that he has no money to spend.

He has also been strongly linked with the likes of Russian-based strikers Peter Odemwingie and Pavel Pogrebnyak.

But according to skysports.com, the Toffees have made an approach to Villarreal to take the highly-rated Altidore.

The 19-year-old, already a full international, is regarded as one of the finest striking prospects in world football and Villarreal beat a host of clubs to land him last summer when they paid the MLS over £7million to take him from New York Red Bull.

However, it's understood that Villarreal have shunned Everton's initial approach as they want Altidore to settle further in Spain rather than try his hand in the Premier League.

Beckham: I'm Ready For Roma

David Beckham feels he is ready for his Serie A debut after playing his first game for AC Milan.

Beckham enjoyed a solid first outing in the Rossoneri shirt, playing the first 45 minutes of a friendly against Hamburg in Dubai, which his new team won 5-4 on penalties.

And the former England captain, who has joined Milan on loan from the Los Angeles Galaxy until March 8, now cannot wait for his first Serie A experience which could take place against Roma on Sunday.

"I'm very happy about my first game in the Milan shirt," said Beckham. "I'm pleased with my performance.

"I feel a bit tired now, but that's normal after all these days of intense work.

"I felt good. My team-mates are extraordinary and it's easy to play with them.

"I'm available (for the game against Roma) and it'll be a great moment for me, whether I play or not.

"I'm happy to be in this team and this intense period of work has really helped me a lot."

Beckham, 33, has not played since the end of the Major League Soccer season in October, but Milan coach Carlo Ancelotti was delighted with his display.

He said: "Beckham had a really good game doing what he'd been asked to do.

"Obviously it's difficult to immediately demand his best when he's only been training with us for eight days.

"I'm very pleased with the work that's been done in the past few days."

Bayern Munich Sees Donovan Potential

Bayern Munich coach Jurgen Klinsmann insists that USA international Landon Donovan has not joined the Bundesliga club simply to make up the numbers.

Donovan has signed for Bayern on loan from the Los Angeles Galaxy until mid-March, and Klinsmann is convinced he will have a big part to play in his side's assault on three trophies this season.

The German champions are currently joint top of the Bundesliga, in the last 16 of the DFB-Pokal and at the same stage of the Champions League.

"We are all excited about him," Klinsmann said of Donovan on the club's website.

"He will make appearances in friendly matches, the DFB-Pokal and in the Bundesliga.

"He wants to show everybody responsible here, including me, that he is a player for FC Bayern.

He has what it takes to make it."

The 26-year-old is no stranger to the Bundesliga, having played seven matches for Bayer Leverkusen in between loan spells back to Major League Soccer at the start of his career, but now he wants to leave his mark after failing to make the breakthrough the first time around.

"It will be hard because (Miroslav) Klose and (Luca) Toni are in good form," he admitted.

"My job will be to make things hard for the coach.

FC Bayern is a huge opportunity for me."

Donovan, who has 105 caps for his country, spent 10 days on trial with Bayern in December, but has begun working in earnest since Sunday, when the team arrived for a mid-season training camp in Dubai.

He could make his debut on Saturday in a friendly match against Al Jazeera in Abu Dhabi.

Arsenal In Arshavin Talks

Zenit St Petersburg have confirmed they are in talks with Arsenal over a deal for Andrei Arshavin.

The Russian ace has been looking to leave the UEFA Cup holders in search of a move to a major European club.

Arshavin set the field ablaze with Russia during Euro 2008 and has been linked with the Gunners and their North London rivals Tottenham, along with Spanish giants Real Madrid and Barcelona.

But speculation has grown in recent weeks that he could be set for a move to the Emirates Stadium after he was given permission to discuss his departure from Zenit.

Reports suggest Zenit are demanding a 20million-pound fee for Arshavin, but the Gunners value the 27-year-old at considerably less.

Gunners boss Arsene Wenger has been looking to reinforce his squad after losing captain Cesc Fabregas for several months due to a knee injury.

Tevez Denies Quit Reports

Manchester United striker Carlos Tevez has denied reports saying he has rejected the club's offer of a new contract.

This weekend it was widely reported that Tevez's contract negotiations had hit a snag as the Argentine was demanding a massive salary.

Tevez said: "We have not started talks with Manchester United yet, though I am keen to stay.

"Sir Alex Ferguson has told me he wants me to remain a United player and that is certainly my desire too.

"My contract ends in the summer and we have agreed to sit down at the end of the season and discuss a new contract, nothing I have heard from the club suggests it will be otherwise."

He added: "There is simply no reason to sit down now. I have a great relationship with Sir Alex and I hope that will continue long into the future."

Tevez's agent Kia Joorabchian said: "Manchester United have indicated they would like to sign Carlos for the long term, but we have not started negotiations yet.

"There is no urgency as his contract runs until the summer. Carlos has always said his intent is to stay at United and nothing has changed.

"The supporters have been amazing to him and he loves the club."
