Bayern Crush Sporting 5-0

Bayern Munich wasted little time taking advantage in their UEFA Champions League Round of 16 tie defeating Sporting Club de Portugal 5-0 at the Estadio Jose on Wednesday night. Franck Ribery and Luca Toni each knocked in a brace with Miroslav Klose finishing out the scoring.

It was, however, the home side that looked better from the opening and the game could have been much different had matters gone their way. Sporting’s Fábio Rochemback had an early long range effort tipped wide. Anderson Polga came even closer beating Bayern’s goalkeeper Michael Rensing with a header only to see Philipp Lahm head the goal bound ball off the line.

From that moment forward it was all Bayern. After steady pressure, Ribery opened the scoring with a clinical finish in the 42nd minute.

With a goal advantage, the Bundesliga side poured it on in the second half with Klose deflecting in a second goal off his thigh in the 57th minute, Ribery completing his brace in the 63rd minute from the penalty spot. Toni got in the action late scoring goals in the 84th and one minute into injury time.

Liverpool Surprises Real in Madrid

A late goal from Yossi Benayoun earned Liverpool an invaluable 1-0 win over Real Madrid in the first-leg of their last-16 Champions League clash at the Bernabeu on Wednesday night.

Both teams looked to feel each other out in the opening 25 minutes, but a lapse in the Madrid defense allowed Fernando Torres to test Iker Casillas, but the goalkeeper showed all of his athleticism to keep out the striker's rasping drive.

Xabi Alonso almost scored an absolutely stunning goal in the closing moments of the first-half as the Spaniard saw Casillas well off his line and from inside his own half looked to float an audacious ball over the keeper, but the shot-stopper back-pedaled furiously to just touch the ball over the crossbar.

Rafael Benitez's men began pressing hard for the opener, but a fantastic spell of passing and pressure ended without any result as Yossi Benayoun over-hit his pass to Albert Riera forcing the winger too wide, and his cross-come-shot is easily dealt with by the Madrid defence.

The Galacticos best chance for a goal came 20 minutes from the end as Arjen Robben bobbed and weaved his way towards the Chelsea goal, and his rasping effort brought the best out of Cech who haphazardly tipped the ball over the crossbar and out to safety.

But with just eight minutes remaining in the game and Liverpool were in the lead as Fabio Aurelio sent over a fizzing free-kick, and Benayoun rose unchallenged before powerfully heading past a flapping Casillas.

The second-leg takes place at Anfield in 13 day's time.

Drogba Fires Chelsea Ahead

A first-half goal from Didier Drogba ensured Chelsea a 1-0 win and the advantage heading into their Champions League last-16 second-leg clash at Juventus in a fortnight's time.

The Blues created the game's first chance four minutes in as Salomon Kalou cut inside from the right before unleashing a curling effort, but Gianluigi Buffon was more than equal to the effort and collected without a fuss.

With just 13 minutes gone on the clock Guus Hiddink's men were ahead as Kalou picked up the ball on the edge of the area before picking out Didier Drogba with a cleverly disguised pass, and the Ivorian international needed just one touch to control before firing past the helpless goalkeeper.

Juve looked to respond quickly and almost pulled back the equalizer 10 minutes later as Tiago fed through Alessandro del Piero, but Petr Cech pulled off a brilliant save to deny the visitors from point-blank range.

The visitors looked more composed in the second-half, but a staunch Chelsea defence limited the Italians to very few chances, with Marco Marchionni forced to let fly from 20-yards out, but his shot flew harmlessly wide of the mark.

Raul Plots MLS Experience

Real Madrid goal monster Raul says he is hoping to see some time in Major League Soccer before he hangs his boots.

The 31-year old Galactico has spoken more than once of his desire to experience the game in America.

"For the moment the plan is to stop in 2011," Raul told Marca. "But I'd like to play a season in the United States for the experience and for my family as well."

"If I don't do it, for sure I'll finish my career at Real Madrid."

Henry Gives Barca a Vital Away Goal

Thierry Henry headed home the equalizer as Barcelona fought back to draw Lyon 1-1 at the Stade Gerland in UEFA Champions League action on Tuesday. The constant attack was expected from these two sides as they combined for 32 goals in the group stage

The home side got a dream start when Juninho converted a set piece in the 7th minute. The Brazilian’s service from the left side caught goalkeeper Víctor Valdés looking for a cross and once slightly out of position the ball sailed over his head and into the top corner.

Lyon had several chances to increase the lead most notably Karim Benzema failing to find answers on a one-on-one and then knocking a shot off the goal post.

Samuel Eto’o had the best chance for Barcelona with a shot coming back off the goal post to keep Lyon’s margin thin.

The second half slowed down but the Catalan giants were able to put their mark on the match with more possession and more consistent chances developed. The French international finally broke through when he headed home at the far post a corner kick that had been flicked on by Rafael Marquez in the 67th minute.

The draw gives Barcelona a slight advantage heading back to the Nou Camp for the March 11 match.

RVP Hands Gunners Advantage

A first-half penalty from Robin van Persie handed Arsenal a 1-0 win over Roma at the Emirates Stadium on Tuesday evening to give the Gunners the advantage going into the second-leg of their Champions League last-16 clash.

Arsene Wenger's men looked sharp from the off and created their first real chance six minutes in as Samir Nasri burst down the left before picking out Nicklas Bendtner on the edge of the area, but the Dane's first-touch let him down and the Roma defence was able to clear.

The Italians looked to spring their attacks from the back and almost took a stunning lead as the visitors broke with pace before the ball came out for Marco Motta, but Manuel Almunia just managed to get finger-tips to the right-back's rasping effort.

The Londoners continue to force the issue for much of the half and the pressure eventually took its toll as Philippe Mexes brought down Van Persie inside the area, and after picking himself up the striker duly slammed the resulting spot-kick into the bottom-right corner to take a deserved half-time lead.

Wenger's men really should have gone two goals up shortly after the restart as the Gunners carved open the Roma defence with some slick one-touch passing, but after locking his sights on goal Bendtner completely ballooned his effort over the crossbar from just a few yards out.

The second-leg will take place at Roma's Stadio Olimpico in a fortnight's time.

Maradona Happy With Form

Argentina coach Diego Maradona is delighted with the way the his side have responded since his appointment in November.

Maradona took over after the departure of Alfio Basile and has led the Albicelestes to two friendly wins, 1-0 over Scotland shortly after his appointment and 2-0 over France a fortnight ago.

In particular, Maradona has been impressed by the form of Liverpool midfielder Javier Mascherano, Bayern Munich defender Martin Demichelis and Real Madrid's Fernando Gago.

"The team have understood what I want, that we must represent the strong traditions of Argentinian football wherever we go," he said. "Now we must keep improving.

"I was very happy with the form of my guys against France. In that friendly, a lot of positions were consolidated.

"Mascherano, Gago, Demichelis...their form were very close to being perfect.

"The players understood my message and it's a credit to them."

Argentina resume their World Cup qualifying campaign on March 28 when they face Venezuela in Buenos Aires before they travel to La Paz to face Bolivia, some 3,600 metres above sea level.

Maradona said: "The base of the squad for the Venezuela and Bolivia matches will be the current one, with two or three exceptions.

"We won't change too much. As for the altitude, we must face it, not fear it."

Gerrard To Return In Madrid

Liverpool captain Steven Gerrard has been included in the squad for Wednesday night's Champions League clash against Real Madrid.

Gerrard has been on the sidelines since suffering a hamstring injury in the Reds' FA Cup defeat to Everton earlier in the month and he was tipped for a possible return against Manchester City on Sunday.

But Benitez chose to continue resting the talismanic midfielder and it has now been revealed that he will feature in Wednesday's clash after taking part in training on Monday.

And Gerrard is now set to travel to Madrid with the rest of the squad for the much-anticipated first leg of the last-16 tie.

Benitez said: "Steven will be in the squad. He was okay in training this morning.

"It was a special training session so we were not testing him 100 per cent, but he trained okay so we will see."

Ronaldo - Time To Kill

Cristiano Ronaldo believes it will be a case of "kill or be killed" when Manchester United face Inter Milan in the first leg of an eagerly awaited last-16 Champions League clash at Old Trafford on Tuesday.

"From now on, all games are important. It's time to kill or be killed," the World Footballer of the Year told uefa.com.

Whoever loses will exit the competition and we don't want to lose, we don't want to get stuck along the way. It will be a difficult game, but I think that Manchester United have a better team, and we'll do our best to win it.

They're a team with very experienced players, but we also have our aces and great players. We have a more experienced team, we're the reigning champions."

The Portugal international added: "It will be a good game, a well-contested game, and the better team will win."

Eduardo Enjoys Dream Return for Arsenal

Arsenal forward Eduardo da Silva enjoyed a dream return to the Emirates after a brace which helped send the Gunners into the quarter-finals of the FA Cup on Monday.

Eduardo was put out of action in February last year after breaking his leg, but with a return to international duty in mid-week, the Croatia international was rearing to get out for the Gunners again.

Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger opted to keep Robin van Persie on the bench for the start of the FA Cup tie with Cardiff to give the Brazilian his return, and was not disappointed as Eduardo found the net twice during the side's 4-0 victory.

"It was the best day of my life," he said.

"It was a special moment to score, very emotional. I celebrated by kissing my wedding ring - because my wife and daughter and family supported me right through this."

"Everybody is very happy for him. This is the kind of game we love to play, and it was good to see them play with the handbrake off," said Wenger.

"He played a big part in that, and I'm very pleased for him.

"He's been extremely strong mentally. I've never seen one minute of doubt in his mind, not one minute where he said 'I don't want to do this'.

"He is always wanting more. This guy is small but he has the mental strength of a mountain."

It was not all good news for the player though, as he came off in the second half after a slight hamstring complaint.

"He had a slight tightness of the hamstring, but we expect it will be a small thing.

"We'll know at the end of the season how important it (his return) is, but I'm very happy to have him back. He can play as a striker, on the flank, behind the striker, up front on his own. That is important for us."

Beckham Can Only Wait And See

Beckham is still hopeful of a move to AC Milan from MLS side LA Galaxy but admits that there is nothing he can do to make the deal go through.

LA Galaxy, who loaned Beckham to the Italian side during their off-season, had said that the Italian giants had not put forward an acceptable offer by the deadline last Friday, and that Beckham would be returning to America after his loan spell at Milan had come to an end on 9 March. But Milan chief executive Adriano Galliani recently dismissed the comments as a tactic to rush the deal.

"We'll have to wait and see," Beckham said after his first Milan derby which finished 2-1 in favour of league leaders Inter-Milan.

"I have enjoyed playing on the pitch and my performances and it has gone well for me. But there is nothing I can do. It is kind of out of my hands."

The former Manchester United and Real Madrid midfielder was taken off 10 minutes into the second half with a minor hamstring injury.

"It was great, a great occasion and one of the biggest games in football and the atmosphere was incredible.

"It is up there with both the derbies in Manchester and Madrid.

"These are the biggest games and you have got to enjoy them. I am just a bit disappointed to have come off injured and that we have lost."

Inter Claim Milan Derby

Inter Milan extended their lead at the top of Serie A to nine points on Sunday night by beating city rivals AC Milan 2-1 in an entertaining derby at the San Siro.

Jose Mourinho's side seemed in complete command at the break thanks to goals from Adriano and Dejan Stankovic.

But a second-half rally from the Rossoneri saw Alexandre Pato half the deficit while Milan also had several chances to claim an unlikely point.

England star David Beckham played only 55 minutes before being replaced by Filippo Inzaghi as Milan looked to fight back.

Inter went into the game boosted by the news that closest challengers Juventus could only manage a 1-1 draw at home to Sampdoria earlier in the day.

Giampaolo Pazzini put Samp ahead but Amauri nodded home an equalizer 17 minutes into the second half.

Third-placed Milan are two points adrift of Juve but three ahead of Fiorentina, for whom Adrian Mutu scored a hat-trick as they came back from 3-0 down to salvage a draw at Genoa.

Same Old Song: U.S. Tops Mexico 2-0 Again

The U.S. Men’s National Team continued their domination of Mexico with a confident and clinical 2-0 victory to open the final round of CONCACAF qualifying for the 2010 FIFA World Cup.

Midfielder Michael Bradley scored goals at the conclusion of each half in wet and windy conditions in front of a rabid pro-American sell-out crowd of 23,776 fans at Columbus Crew Stadium.

The U.S. is now 9-0-2 at home against Mexico since 1999, outscoring their rival 19-3 in that span. The 2-0 triumph also adds to the team’s recent slate of significant victories by the same margin, marking the sixth time this decade the team has defeated Mexico by that score (a tally which includes three World Cup qualifiers and a second round victory in the 2002 FIFA World Cup).

“It's great to start the final round with a win against Mexico,” said U.S. Men’s National Team head coach Bob Bradley. “The all around team effort was good. It's a good starting point and something to build on.”

For the 21-year-old Michael Bradley, the two goals were the fourth and fifth of his career, and his third and fourth in seven career World Cup qualifying games. He is the fourth player in U.S. history to score two goals in a game against Mexico, and the first since Steve Moyers did it 19 years ago in a 2-1 FIFA World Cup qualifying win on Nov. 23, 1980.

Bradley’s first goal came just two minutes before halftime, as he pounced on a save from Mexican goalkeeper Oswaldo Sanchez to power home a close-range finish from the center of the goalkeeper area after Oguchi Onyewu had headed a hard shot on target from six yards out. That first goal came just a few seconds after Frankie Hejduk had set up a corner kick by hustling to a quick post-up pass from Brian Ching, getting to the ball just before it crossed the endline and playing it off Mexican defender Carlos Salcido. On the ensuing corner, DaMarcus Beasley hit a high, looping ball that got caught up in the wind before finding the head of Landon Donovan on the far post who headed perfectly back into the area for Onyewu before Bradley finished the rebound.

The final goal came in the second minute of stoppage time with Bradley finishing easily from 25 yards out with a powerful shot that froze a slow-reacting Sanchez. Second-half sub Jozy Altidore helped set up the goal by calmly collecting a ball at midfield, establishing his position against a challenging Mexican defense and then laying off an easy pass into the left flank for a sprinting Donovan to carry toward goal and lay off for Bradley.

“These are special games, they’re fun games to play in,” said Michael Bradley. “As a player, these are the games we want to play in. In the locker room before the game, we looked at every guy and knew we were ready to play. I don’t think its one guy, its 11 guys committed to do every little thing on the field to make sure we were going to get the result.”

The U.S. controlled play throughout most of the match, continually combining in the middle of the field with quick passes and fast pace to create space and keep Mexico on their heals. The confident play resulted in a number of close early chances, most notably a great build-up in the 16th minute that ended with Beasley taking a stab from the top of the penalty arc that sailed high and wide. Six minutes later, Brian Ching earned a free kick from just outside the area that Donovan hit just wide of the left post.

The game could have been much different, though, in the third minute, as young Mexican forward Giovani Dos Santos was stonewalled on a sitter from just 10 yards out by U.S. goalkeeper Tim Howard following some sloppy defending from the U.S. The save was one of three on the night for Howard, who was his usual sure-handed self on numerous other crosses and balls played into his penalty area.

It was Howard who was at the center of another pivotal moment in the game when he was on the receiving end of a malicious stab to the right thigh from the cleats of Rafael Marquez in the 65th minute. Marquez received an immediate red card from referee Carlos Batres of Guatemala on the play. Unfortunately for Howard, the result of the play also saw him pick-up a yellow card for time wasting, his second of World Cup qualifying, which means he must sit out the USA’s next qualifier on March 28 in El Salvador.

The red card challenge from Marquez came just seconds after Mexico’s best chance to score. Pavel Pardo sent a perfect free kick from the center of the field into the penalty area where an errant touch from Dos Santos set up Fausto Pinto perfectly on the left side of the box. Pinto took a touch and then slid a dangerous shot past an open goal that was somehow missed at the far post for an easy tap-in by Dos Santos, laying flat on his back. Although Dos Santos was arguably in an offside position on the missed open net tap-in, the flag stayed down and the ball was quickly played back into the area where Howard confidently snared it before being spiked by Marquez in the thigh.

The red card for Marquez was reminiscent of his exit from the USA’s 2-0 victory over Mexico at the 2002 FIFA World Cup in Korea, when he was sent off after a vicious head butt to all-time U.S. cap leader Cobi Jones.

As evidence of the pace and confidence with which the U.S. played, Mexico made all three substitutions and had a player ejected all before the U.S. made a single change as the 11 starters played with a rhythm that left the result rarely in doubt. Eventually, Bob Bradley would make two changes in the final 10 minutes as the U.S. controlled the game with a man advantage for the final 25 minutes.

Chelsea Give Scolari The Axe

Luiz Felipe Scolari has been fired as Chelsea manager.

A statement on the club's official website says the decision was made "to maintain a challenge for the trophies we are still competing for".

The statement added: "Felipe has brought many positives to the club since he joined, and we all feel a sense of sadness that our relationship has ended so soon.

"Unfortunately the results and performances of the team appeared to be deteriorating at a key time in the season.

"In order to maintain a challenge for the trophies we are still competing for, we felt the only option was to make the change now.

"The search for a new manager has already started, and we hope to have someone in place as soon as possible."

Assistant coach Ray Wilkins will take over until a replacement is appointed.

Galaxy and Milan Haggling Over Beckham Price

AC Milan general manager Adriano Galliani admits the Rossoneri's offer for David Beckham is currently a long way off what the Los Angeles Galaxy are demanding.

The Serie A club and Beckham have made no secret about the fact that they want to make the England midfielder's short-term loan move permanent.

Milan and the Galaxy are currently in negotiations and Galliani is hopeful the two parties will arrive at an agreement before Beckham is due back in America on March 9.

"We have made an offer to Galaxy and they didn't accept it," he told Sky Italia. "However, there's a willingness to talk between a party who's making an offer, which is Milan, and another who's evaluating it.

"At the moment we're very far apart but there is still a month left.

"(Galaxy president) Tim Leiweke decides for them. I write to him and he responds."

Beckham has been a revelation since arriving at Milan, where he has scored two goals.

The 33-year-old's form has been so crucial that coach Carlo Ancelotti has included him in Milan's UEFA Cup list despite the possibility that the midfielder may only feature in two matches, while Beckham has also made England coach Fabio Capello's squad for next week's friendly against Spain.

"He is doing really well," continued Galliani. "And he has an incredible strength of will.

"Last Wednesday we played in Glasgow, he had a cough and a really bad cold but he didn't want to be substituted.

"Beckham is polite, he packs his own bags, cleans his shoes on his own, opens and closes the bottle of water and returns it, without throwing it away.

"He's one of the old-school players, the kind I like."

Beckham Confirms Milan Wish

David Beckham has urged Los Angeles Galaxy to make his World Cup dream come true by allowing him to join AC Milan on a permanent basis.

The England midfielder has confirmed he wants to stay at the San Siro when his loan spell ends - after surprising even himself with his form.

The 33-year-old has scored twice for Milan since his debut last month and set up two goals in Saturday's 3-0 win over Lazio, which lifted the Rossoneri into second place in Serie A.

Beckham's loan deal is due to expire on March 9 but he now expects both clubs to discuss an agreement that could see him stay in Italy.

Any permanent contract is likely to take him at least to the 2010 World Cup in South Africa, where he hopes to play in his fourth finals tournament for England.

And Beckham, who began a five-year contract with Major League Soccer club Galaxy in 2007, admits moving back to Europe would help him realise his ambition.

"I think people have seen the way I've been since I've been back at this level again," said Beckham, who was back in Britain on Wednesday night to play in Milan's 2-2 friendly draw against Rangers.

"It's nothing against MLS and the football over there, because it's a game that will grow. But it will take quite a few years.

"I'm still confident that will happen eventually, but I want to have a chance of being involved in 2010 and I believe my best chance of doing so is to remain here.

"I have enjoyed my time here. I knew I would enjoy it but I didn't expect to enjoy it as much as I have, and do as well as I have."

Beckham's performances are likely to persuade England manager Fabio Capello to name the midfielder in his squad for next week's friendly against Spain when it is announced on Saturday.

And the former Milan coach, who initially dropped Beckham from his Real Madrid side when he announced he would be joining Galaxy, has advised Beckham to play at the top level for as long s he can.

Beckham said: "When I was first thinking about going on loan, obviously I asked his advice on where I should play and he said 'All I can say to you is play at the highest level'."

Beckham contradicted Milan general manager Adriano Galliani's claim that his lawyers were in talks with LA Galaxy.

But the former Manchester United player believes both clubs will be discussing his future in the coming days.

"I've expressed my desire to stay here for a while but at the moment I'm still a Galaxy player," added Beckham.

"I respect the Galaxy and everything they have done for me. They have always been great to me.

"But I hope they can come to an agreement and it's down to the clubs now. "At this point it's out of my hands. I've said what my feelings are to both clubs.

"To be given the chance again to play at this level at my age is pretty incredible and I've enjoyed it so much I would like to continue it."

Sinha: U.S. Are 'Overrated'

With just over a week left until Mexico kicks off the final round of CONCACAF World Cup 2010 qualifying in Columbus, Mexico attacker Sinha had fired a verbal salvo by saying the U.S. National Team fail to live up to their rep.

Although El Tri have won but two of the 13 meetings in this decade - both World Cup qualifiers at Azteca - the Toluca star claims it is not because they are the lesser team.

"To me, Mexico is much better, but we need to do things the right way," Sinha told reporters. "We need to put the negatives aside."

"They are very overrated because, from my perspective, they are not what they are made out to be."

Arsenal Seal Arshavin Deal

The Premier League have officially confirmed that Arsenal have signed star striker Andrei Arshavin.

This comes hours after Zenit St Petersburg had confirmed to the media that the deal was complete. The 27-year-old's transfer passed his medical and agreed on personal terms with Arsenal on Monday, but the deal was not sealed until a day after the transfer deadline close due to delayed ratification from the Premier League.

The Russia international was a vital cog in Zenit's UEFA Cup winning squad of last season and has earned 41 caps for his country. Arsene Wenger has reportedly been a long time admirer of the Russian playmaker and announced late on Monday that the deal had been done, but was just waiting to be ratified.

The amount paid for the player is undisclosed, but Zenit spokesman Alexei Petrov appeared on Russian television on Monday and said: "Both clubs have managed to complete the deal. Arshavin will play for Arsenal from now on,"

"The conditions of the contract are very favorable for Zenit. The value of the deal is much more than GBP 12 million."

Arshavin has reportedly signed a three-and-a-half year contract with the London based club, and could make his debut in the North London derby against Tottenham Hotspur.

Rafa Rationalizes Keane Departure

Liverpool boss Rafa Benitez has admitted that he took a gamble by allowing Robbie Keane to move back to Tottenham.

Keane returned to White Hart Lane in a late transfer on Monday, after spending just six months at Anfield, where he failed to impress. Benitez insists that he had no choice but to let the Ireland international go, feeling that the striker's situation was not good for the rest of the squad.

"Sometimes good players cannot settle down in the team and when this happens you have to consider the situation and try to react quickly," said Benitez.

"If it is not good for the team then it is better for everyone to make a decision and because of the situation in the transfer market and for the opportunity for the player we had to do it now.

"I have to analyze things and try to look at the bigger picture. This means thinking of the club and the team and what is best for them."

However fans will be worried about the lack of strikers as they hope to keep their chase for the title alive, but Benitez is confident that they will be able to cope without Keane.

"We still have Babel, Ngog and Kuyt as well as Torres. It is a risk but the situation was not good and we needed to do something. Now I would like to wish Robbie the best because although things did not work out he has been working hard for us. He was trying to do his best and the key was that Spurs showed a lot of interest and they were pushing really hard for him."

"The player needed to play and he was not doing that as much as he would have liked with us. But I cannot criticize him in any way because, as I have said, he tried to do his best for us."

Quaresma Joins Blues On Loan Deal

Chelsea have completed the signing of Ricardo Quaresma from Inter Milan on a six-month loan agreement.

The 25-year-old adds to the Portuguese contingent at the club, which will increase to six players once the winger arrives at Stamford Bridge.

Quaresma, who is also known as 'Mustang' for his pace and power, is able to play on either wing and will provide cover for the injured Joe Cole.

The Portugal international started his career at Sporting Lisbon where he played alongside Cristiano Ronaldo, and helped the club to the 2001/02 league championship.

Inter manager Jose Mourinho signed Quaresma shortly after taking over at the Italian club, but has omitted the winger from his Champions League squad following a loss of form.

Messi Off The Bench To Save Barça

Lionel Messi came off the bench to score twice as nine-man Barcelona came from behind to beat Racing Santander 2-1 at El Sardinero on Sunday.

The runaway Primera Liga leaders appeared to be in trouble when Nikola Zigic put the Cantabrians ahead from the penalty spot early in the second half.

But Pep Guardiola turned to Messi in his moment of need and the Argentina forward turned the game on its head with two well-taken goals.

However, the late dismissals of Rafa Marquez and Yaya Toure did take some of the gloss off the result after both players were given their marching orders for second bookable offenses in the closing stages.

Torres Sinks 10-Man Chelsea

A late Fernando Torres brace kept the pressure on Premier League leaders Manchester United as Liverpool dominated their clash with Chelsea at Anfield on Sunday.

The Reds enjoyed the majority of possession in the first-half and created a couple of opportunities to go ahead, but failed to break through the visitors' defense.

Torres had a shot solidly blocked by Alex as the Spaniard was allowed a few touches in The Blues' box, while Steven Gerrard was also presented with a gap to have a shot on goal which was denied by Chelsea bodies in the area.

The Blues barely escaped from conceding the opening goal when goalkeeper Petr Cech parried Albert Riera's shot into Ashley Cole who narrowly put the ball past his own goal.

A controversial decision by referee Mike Reily saw Frank Lampard given a straight red-card for his challenge on Xabi Alonso an hour into the match. Lampard went in with both feet but clearly won the ball and only made slight contact with the Spaniard as Chelsea were reduced to ten men nonetheless.

Yossi Benayoun came on for Riera and immediately made an impact as he unleashed two powerful shots on target forcing Cech to make one diving save to keep Chelsea at level pegging, as The Reds went on the attack for the final 15 minutes.

In the 89th minute the Anfield hero arrived in the form of Torres who connected with a Fabio Aurelio cross from the left to glance a header past Cech at the near post. However, the Spain international was not done yet as he put the result beyond doubt when he capitalized on a dreadful mistake from Ashley Cole by netting his second.
