Rafa: Liverpool Can Beat Anyone in Europe

Rafael Benitez aims to make it two Champions League wins out of two on Tuesday night and insists Liverpool can "beat anyone" in Europe.

Liverpool have won six games in succession and beat Hungarian champion Debrecen 1-0 in their opening Group E match a fortnight ago.

If the Reds can win against Fiorentina in the Stadio Artemio Franchi on Tuesday night, then a place in the last 16 would be within their grasp.

Benitez, whose team will be without hamstring victim Javier Mascherano, said: "The Champions League is a very different and difficult competition, but we have confidence we can beat anyone.

"The Champions League, if you start winning consistently, becomes massive. We got three points against Debrecen and if we can win against Fiorentina it will be a very good step forward.

"Because then we maybe have to win two more at home and that will be enough to qualify."

Liverpool thrashed Hull 6-1 at the weekend, and Benitez said: "I think we can take this mentality into the Champions League, because the team is playing with confidence and scoring goals and playing good football.

"It is easy for the players and the staff to have the same mentality.

"I am sure it will be different because Fiorentina are a very organized team so it will be more difficult to play good football but we will try."

Benitez has shrugged off criticism of his side's recent defensive lapses, and pointed to the positives of a stunning 24-goal haul so far this term.

The Anfield chief knows, too, that Spanish striker Fernando Torres has a lot to do with the goals rush, having hit eight in eight games this term.

He insists that the team's attacking approach will not change in a difficult away European tie, and that Torres can get even better.

Benitez said: "Our form has a lot to do with Torres, obviously. In the last three games he has been outstanding.

"Torres can still improve, because he likes to learn. He is on fire at the moment and is a key player for us, but the Champions League is more difficult and he is aware of that."

He added: "We are scoring more goals and not really worried that we have conceded a few more.

"Our aim is to score goals and win matches, keeping clean sheets is a bonus.

"This has been a very good goalscoring start to the season, I'm told the best for over 100 years at this club.

"But even if you score goals and also concede, then someone will see the negative of that."

Ibra Out? Henry To Take Center Stage

Thierry Henry looks set to start in the center-forward role for Barcelona at Malaga on Saturday with Zlatan Ibrahimovic a doubt for the game.

Ibrahimovic has been named in a 19-man squad to face the Andalusians and will travel to Malaga with the rest of his team-mates.

But the Sweden striker, who has scored in each of his first four league games since signing from Inter Milan in the summer, is not fully recovered from an ankle injury he picked up in the 4-1 win at Racing Santander on Tuesday night.

Coach Pep Guardiola usually errs on the side of caution with his injured players and it is thought Ibrahimovic will not start.

And with Bojan Krkic out injured, that means a probable start in the center for Henry.

The former Arsenal forward was in red-hot form last season, scoring 26 goals in all competitions as Barcelona claimed an historic treble of league, Copa del Rey and Champions League.

But the Frenchman is yet to score this season and has been criticized in the Catalan press for his performances.

It now looks like he will have the perfect opportunity to silence those critics.

Should Henry get the nod in the center, Andres Iniesta is likely to come in on the left-hand side up front for his first start since returning from a thigh injury.

Iniesta missed the whole of Barca's pre-season campaign, but has appeared as a substitute in the Catalans' last four matches.

Meanwhile, Gabi Milito is on the comeback trail after over a year on the sidelines, but the Argentina defender is still not ready to return to action.

Barcelona have been in the news for the wrong reasons this week as it emerged that the club had spied on four presidential candidates looking to succeed current supremo Joan Laporta.

But Guardiola says that negative press will not affect his players.

"I don't know what happened, but I know they will let me get on with my job, which is to prepare the players for the game against Malaga," he said.

"It won't affect them, I'll make sure of that."

Guardiola refused to reveal whether Ibrahimovic will start against Malaga, but said the Swede was making a good recovery from his injury.

"He has trained well, evolved well and worked well with the group. If he doesn't play, somebody else will come in - I have confidence in my players," he said.

Barcelona lead the Primera Division by virtue of having scored one more goal than rivals Real Madrid after four rounds of the championship.

The Catalans have scored 14 and let in three, while Madrid have netted 13 and conceded two.

Malaga, meanwhile, are badly in need of points after losing their last three matches.

The Andalusians began the season in style with an impressive 3-0 win at home to Atletico Madrid. But Juan Ramon Lopez Muniz's side have gone down in all three games since then and sit just a point clear of the relegation zone.

They face an uphill task to get anything tomorrow but Lopez Muniz insists Barcelona cannot win every week.

"I am sure Barcelona are not going to win all of their 38 league games," he said. "We have hope."

Apono, Jordi Pablo and Milan Stepanov all miss out through injury but Valdo returns and is set to start.

Kaka: Real Madrid can get even better

Kaka claims Real Madrid still have room for improvement despite making it four league wins from four with their 2-0 triumph over Villarreal.

Kaka netted his first competitive goal for Madrid with a second-half penalty to help coach Manuel Pellegrini enjoy a happy return to the club he left in the summer and ensure the capital club continued their 100 per cent record.

Only Madrid and their arch rivals Barcelona have won each of their opening four matches and they already boast a three-point advantage over the rest of the division, and if that was not bad enough for the other teams, Kaka believes there is more to come from his side as well.

"I'm very happy with the win, although we can still improve. To play how we want takes time, but I think we are on the right path," he said.

Cristiano Ronaldo gave Madrid the perfect start at El Madrigal by netting in the opening two minutes for the second successive match, and that took his tally to seven goals in five league and Champions League fixtures this season.

Ronaldo's fellow summer signing Kaka has found it more difficult to get off the mark, but he finally managed it last night after taking over the penalty duties from Ronaldo to roll home his side's second goal against 10-man Villarreal.

"I'm happy to have scored my first goal. It's been a great joy and I think I'll score more, but the most important thing is that the team won," the Brazilian added.

"When I scored, all my team-mates congratulated me. This shows that this team is very united, and my joy is the joy of the whole team."

Ronaldo, who netted twice against Xerez at the weekend, is enjoying a great start to the campaign having found himself under the spotlight a few weeks ago after struggling to find his best form during pre-season.

His goal last night saw him enter into the Madrid record books as the first player to score in the club's first four league matches of a season, and he is currently level with Lionel Messi and David Villa at the top of the scoring charts.

It has been a great start for both Ronaldo and Madrid, although the Portugal winger admits it was not easy against Villarreal, despite the home side losing their captain Gonzalo Rodriguez to a red card midway through the first half.

"It was a very difficult game against an opponent who have caused us many problems," the Portugal international said.

"We were able to score in the opening minutes and this is always important, but the key thing is that we've been able to to take away the three points.

"We've had to work hard because they've put us under pressure from the start, but little by little we warmed up and we were able to play how we like."

Crazy Fan or Free Kick Specialist?

Ronaldinho refutes retirement talk

AC Milan playmaker Ronaldinho has denied speculation in the Spanish press he is considering retiring from football at the end of the season.

The Brazilian star has not featured in the Rossoneri's last two games and has yet to find the back of the net after three appearances with the Serie A giants this campaign.

"I have never considered the possibility of retiring from football," said the 29-year-old on his official website. "The source of my happiness has always been to play football.

"I am happy at Milan and I will remain here until the end of my contract."

The two-times winner of the FIFA World Player of the Year award joined Milan from Barcelona last year, but he has failed to make an impact at the San Siro.

Milan owner Silvio Berlusconi had hoped that after selling Kaka to Real Madrid this summer, Ronaldinho would rediscover some form.

Rossoneri coach Leonardo has not been impressed, however, and the player was not included in the 2-1 Champions League victory at Marseille last week, nor did he feature in the narrow triumph over Bologna at the weekend.

Ronaldinho is under contract with the Rossoneri until June 2011.

Manchester Derby delight for City slayer Owen

Michael Owen believes he proved his dedication to Manchester United with his dramatic last-gasp winner against Manchester City at Old Trafford.

Owen spent eight years playing for United's bitter rivals Liverpool but Sir Alex Ferguson signed him this summer - and the 29-year-old scored his second goal for the club to seal a 4-3 win deep in stoppage-time against City.

When asked if that would confirm hero status with United fans, Owen told Sky Sports: "Yes, if there was any doubt before then maybe.

"It was always going to create noise when I joined but even if the fans didn't take to me you're never going to pass up an opportunity to play for team like this."

City equalized three times before Owen struck.

Wayne Rooney opened the scoring before Gareth Barry took advantage of Ben Foster's error. Darren Fletcher scored two headers, with Craig Bellamy leveling twice for the visitors.

"We dominated and the lads played well for a lot of the game," Owen added. "There were individual mistakes but over the years before I was here the defense has been fantastic."

Fletcher added: "It was an unbelievable match, we showed great character to come back. The goals were mistakes but we look at the positives - we showed character to the end."

United Manager: Man City are 'a bit cocky'

Manchester United boss Sir Alex Ferguson believes Manchester City have become "a bit cocky" since their lavish summer spending spree.

City were the top flight's biggest spenders during the transfer window as Hughes snapped up the likes of Emmanuel Adebayor, Kolo Toure and Carlos Tevez for big fees.

Hughes has been rewarded with a 100 per cent start to the season and takes his team to local rivals United on Sunday for one of the most eagerly-awaited derbies in recent years.

United boss Ferguson believes there will now be a greater intensity to the rivalry between the two clubs, but feels City still have a way to go before challenging for the title.

"The rivalry has gone up a notch in the last few months, with them signing all those players and then coming up with that advert and all their posters about Carlos Tevez," Ferguson told American radio station Sirius XM.

"They've been a bit, how can I put it, cocky. Yes, a bit cocky. They've got seven center-forwards now, which is crazy, just amazing.

"But when you have spent that amount of money, and the wages they are paying, you have to win the league with that kind of investment. That's where the difficulty will come for them.

"It's going to be very difficult for them to win the league when you see ourselves, Liverpool, Chelsea and Arsenal because they've got to beat the four of us at some point to get the league.

"It's very difficult to get into the top four and it's even more difficult to get into the top one - and that's what this league is all about, being No.1."

City have beaten Blackburn, Wolves, Portsmouth and Arsenal to date, but Ferguson said: "They have had a softish start to the season, with two or three easier games."

Adebayor will miss Sunday's clash at Old Trafford after being banned for stamping on Robin van Persie and Ferguson was surprised by the incident.

He said: "It was surprising behavior. I couldn't believe it. He was very aggressive, the boy."

(Soccer365.com)

No regrets over stamp - Adebayor

Emmanuel Adebayor insists he "can't regret" stamping on Robin van Persie because he did not intend to hurt his former Arsenal teammate.

The Football Association have hit Adebayor with a three-match ban for violent conduct following an incident in Manchester City's 4-2 win over Arsenal last weekend.

The Togo international caught Van Persie in the head during the second half, but continues to protest his innocence by stressing he did not intend to hurt his ex-strike partner.

"I am sorry Robin got hurt, but I can't regret something I did not mean to do," Adebayor told The Sun.

"Anybody who knows me knows I would not set out to hurt anybody and I would especially not mean to hurt an old team-mate.

"I really am glad Robin was OK because I know my stud was close to his eye, but there was really nothing I could have done - there was no way I could have got out of the way in time."

The forward has also been charged with improper conduct by the FA after running the length of the pitch to celebrate in front of Arsenal fans after scoring City's third goal.

Adebayor has explained his celebration was a response to the abuse he had received from the travelling support and concedes he could not take any more.

He added: "People talk about us as being football players and the money we earn, but just because we are fortunate it does not mean we need to take abuse.

"If you were to abuse a man in the street for over an hour he would react and it would be a worse reaction than a goal celebration!

"There is only so much abuse a man can take until he reaches breaking point.

"I was being abused by people who six months ago were singing my name and the abuse was for no reason.

"I scored and I wanted to show people it is not a good idea to abuse me. I really didn't understand it at all.

"I was running on pure emotion and when you take emotion out of football we are going to have a big problem.

"People say I had time to think because I ran the length of the pitch, but that is not true.

"I was abused all match and scored a goal I knew would win the game for us. Ten seconds is nothing. Your emotion is going to last a lot longer than that."

Adebayor also claims some of his old team-mates did not shake his hand before kick-off, commenting: "There were players from Arsenal who refused to shake my hand before the match.

"I don't want to give you their names - that is not my style - but there's more than one of them.

"My friends, like Eboue, were fine with me. They are decent people. But I could not understand some of the Arsenal players being disrespectful towards me."

Eduardo steals Arsenal win over Standard

Arsenal staged a stunning comeback from 2-0 down to beat Standard Liege 3-2 in their Champions League Group H opener on Wednesday evening.

The Gunners went into the game having lost successive league games to Manchester United and City - and it looked like it would be three defeats on the spin as they were 2-0 behind within five minutes in Belgium.

The opener came on two minutes when Eduardo's fancy flick fell to Eliaquim Mangala, who beat Vito Mannone with a low drive from 18 yards.

William Gallas then fouled Milan Jovanovic in the box, with the striker easily beating Mannone from the penalty spot.

Arsene Wenger's men were shell-shocked but recovered their composure as the first half went on, and pulled a goal back on 45 when Nicklas Bendtner coolly converted Abou Diaby's defence-splitting pass.

The visitors enjoyed more possession after the break and grabbed a controversial equalizer on 78, when Cesc Fabregas' free-kick appeared to be handled by an offside Alexandre Song, who squared for Thomas Vermaelen to bundle home from close range.

Eduardo and Vermaelen were both denied goals by a brilliant save and a goalline clearance - but the Gunners grabbed an unbelievable third goal on 81 when Eduardo turned the ball home from a corner to spark wild celebrations.

MLS To Pause For World Cup Group Play

Major League Soccer Commissioner Don Garber has announced that for the first time in its history, MLS will not play League games during the group phase of the 2010 FIFA World Cup.

The group phase includes the first 48 games of the 64-game tournament that begins on June 11, 2010 in South Africa. The last MLS game prior to the World Cup will be played on June 10th and MLS will not schedule any additional League games until after the group phase concludes on June 25th. MLS does not plan to schedule games on the days of either World Cup Semifinal nor the World Cup Final.

"The decision to stop League play during the group phase of the 2010 FIFA World Cup is part of MLS' commitment to deepen its connection with the millions of soccer fans in the United States and Canada," said MLS Commissioner Don Garber. "The World Cup will be a focal point for all MLS fans and several MLS players will compete with their national teams at the tournament."

The 2010 MLS Regular Season will again see each team play a 30-game regular season, followed by playoffs among eight qualifying teams. The 2010 season will begin with a single game March 25 and will conclude October 24. The MLS Cup Playoffs will culminate in the championship match, MLS Cup 2010, on November 21.

MLS plans to announce each club's 2010 home opener in the near future. The complete 2010 MLS schedule will be announced early next year.

Guardiola keen to thank Eto'o

Pep Guardiola wants to thank Samuel Eto'o for his service to Barcelona as the Catalans prepare to face their former hero on Wednesday night in Champions League play.

Barca take on Inter Milan in the Champions League having swapped strikers in the summer, and while Zlatan Ibrahimovic welcomed his move, the Cameroon striker has aired his disquiet.

During the transfer saga Guardiola stated that he had a feeling that Eto'o should leave and that has riled the striker, but the coach is now hopeful they will be on good terms.

"I hope to say hello and thank him for everything he gave us over the last five years," he told reporters at a press conference.

"It's not easy to stop Eto'o. It's true that I know him but it's always difficult to control players like him, with his quality. He's a great player with a champion's mentality".

Guardiola is expecting a tough test against the Serie A champions and recognised that Barcelona will have to be at their best to come away with a win.

"It'll be a tough test, a very difficult match. Inter have a lot of strength. They're strong in all aspects. We'll have to play a complete match," he continued.

"We'll try and do the same as always - get the ball and attack. We have to try and give people a good match in a marvellous stadium. We respect this style of football and we're coming here to win and do what we know.

"It's fantastic for us to be able play matches like these that guarantee a great spectacle."

When asked whether Barca and Inter were going to be playing their games to see who finishes top, Guardiola insisted that Dynamo Kiev and Rubin Kazan would be involved.

"Absolutely not. We're in the toughest group, with four champions of their respective leagues. It's a group where there could be a lot of upsets," he added.

Lampard, Chelsea settle for gutsy victory

Frank Lampard admitted Chelsea were not at their best as they posted a narrow 1-0 victory over FC Porto at a rain-sodden Stamford Bridge.

The Blues' opening Champions League Group D match was settled by Nicolas Anelka's strike three minutes after the interval, but good football was thin on the ground as torrential rain in west London made the playing conditions hard work.

Chelsea were good value for their victory despite the marginal scoreline, and Lampard was relieved to get three points from a tricky opening game.

"It was a great result, we weren't at our best tonight but it was a difficult night and we got the win," Lampard told Sky Sports.

"You can't always play top, top football. The ball was skidding about, some of our passing went astray, but we've got to stay strong and win the game, and that's what we did."

Chelsea were without Didier Drogba, who is banned for the first three group games following his foul-mouthed rant after the semi-final defeat to Barcelona last season, and Lampard praised Anelka and Salomon Kalou for shouldering the burden up front.

He said: "We played a big portion of the season last year without Didier. Obviously you want him playing, but if you don't have him, Nicolas and Kalou up front are top players too."

Asked whether Chelsea felt more motivated to succeed in Europe with the memories of last season's controversial exit at the hands of Barca still raw, Lampard said: "Every year is different, and every year we go into it we want to win it.

"There's no year we want it more than any other.

"We wanted it last year badly, when we nearly got to the final, and this year we want it badly again."

Chelsea manager Carlo Ancelotti conceded that his players looked a touch jaded after the interval, but was happy to come away with his sixth straight win at the helm.

"We have to control the game more when we go ahead," the Italian said, "but we are a little bit tired I think.

"We had a tough match last Saturday [a last-gasp 2-1 win over Stoke]. It is normal to get tired in the second half because we worked hard.

"Porto played very well, especially at the end. Porto are the best team in the group and it was a good result."

Ancelotti also echoed Lampard's praise of Anelka's performance, saying: "Nicolas is a great player - he can play with Didier and without Didier."

Double trouble for City's Adebayor

The FA have hit Emmanuel Adebayor with two charges following his controversial performance in Manchester City's win over Arsenal on Saturday.

Adebayor is facing a three-match ban for violent conduct for the incident involving Robin van Persie, while the City striker is likely to face an additional punishment for the celebration that followed his goal in the 4-2 win.

Unless the Togo international can successfully argue his case, he is almost certain not to be available for City at least until their trip to Wigan on October 18.

"The Football Association today issued two charges against Manchester City's Emmanuel Adebayor following Saturday's Premier League fixture between Manchester City and Arsenal," said a statement issued by the FA.

"Under the fast-track disciplinary process, Adebayor has been charged with violent conduct following an incident with Robin van Persie, which resulted in the Arsenal player receiving facial injuries.

"Referee Mark Clattenburg has advised the FA that he did not see this incident, but has confirmed that had he done so, he would have sent Adebayor off for violent conduct. The player has until 6pm on Wednesday evening to respond to the charge.

"Adebayor has also been charged with improper conduct following his actions when turning and running the full length of the pitch to celebrate in front of the Arsenal supporters after scoring.

"The Greater Manchester Police have written to The FA with their views on this incident. A separate date will now be arranged for a commission to consider Adebayor's goal celebration."

Eduardo wins appeal against CL ban

Arsenal have won their appeal against striker Eduardo's two-match ban following his alleged dive in the Champions League match against Celtic.

The Croatia striker was initially suspended for two Champions League games for allegedly diving to win a penalty in the qualifier at the Emirates at the end of August.

Eduardo successfully converted the spot-kick himself and the Gunners went on to win the game 3-1.

However, Scottish FA chief executive Gordon Smith was quick to call for action against Eduardo and UEFA subsequently began an investigation, which Gunners boss Arsene Wenger lambasted as a "witch-hunt".

The Premier League club lodged an appeal against the ban which would have ruled the player out of the games against Standard Liege on Wednesday as well as the home match with Olympiacos in a fortnight.

However, UEFA have now announced the ban has been quashed.

A statement on their website, uefa.com, read: "The UEFA Appeals body today accepted the appeal lodged by Arsenal FC against the two-match suspension handed to striker Eduardo.

"Following examination of all the evidence, notably the declarations of both the referee and the referees' assessor, as well as the various video footage, it was not established to the panel's satisfaction that the referee had been deceived in taking his decision on the penalty.

"Therefore, the decision of the UEFA Control and Disciplinary Body of 1 September, in which the player was suspended for two UEFA club competition matches, is annulled."

The north London club had been furious with the initial ban and welcomed UEFA's action.

A statement on arsenal.com read: "We are grateful that the appeal body focused on the evidence and made the right decision in this case.

"We were able to show that there was contact between the goalkeeper and Eduardo and that the decision of the UEFA disciplinary body should be annulled.

"We fully support the drive for fair play in football and believe it is important that UEFA provide clear and comprehensive standards that will be consistently enforced going forward.

"We are glad to put this incident behind us and concentrate on the games ahead."

Xavi impressed by Ibrahimovic

Barcelona midfielder Xavi has praised the impact made by new striker Zlatan Ibrahimovic. The Sweden international has scored twice since joining Barca from Inter Milan over the summer in a swap deal which involved Samuel Eto'o going the opposite way.

But it is in the dressing room where Ibrahimovic has made the biggest impact, according to Spain midfielder Xavi.

He said: "He is beginning an adventure that will last for five years.

"He has surprised me because he jokes a lot when I thought he would be more serious.

"Everyone said he was awkward but that is not the case. He is very likable, he has adapted very well."

Ibrahimovic makes a swift return to Inter this week as the two European giants lock horns in the Champions League.

It will also see Inter coach and former Barca backroom staff member Jose Mourinho come up against his old employers.

And Xavi sees many similarities between the Portuguese and current Barca boss Pep Guardiola.

He added: "I had three years with him (Mourinho) when he was an assistant to (Louis) Van Gaal and I learnt a lot.

"He is like Guardiola in that they are both obsessed by work.

"Perhaps Mourinho is more focused on defense while Pep is more romantic and wants to play well besides winning."

Tevez doubtful for Manchester derby

Manchester City forward Carlos Tevez faces a race against time to be fit to face his old club in next weekend's Manchester derby.

The Argentina star tweaked his knee during World Cup duty with his country last weekend and has already been ruled out of City's clash with Arsenal on Saturday.

Early indications are Tevez will also sit out the Old Trafford encounter with United on September 20.

Tevez is desperate to play against his former club, having assumed cult hero status at City due to his bitter departure from United.

And Hughes will give the South American every opportunity.

"The Argentine medical people said it would be two or three weeks," said the City boss.

"We think it might be less than that but he is a doubt for the derby next week.

"However, we will do everything in our power to get him fit because, for obvious reasons, he would love to play in that match."

Meanwhile, City will wait for the results of scans on Robinho's ankle injury before deciding whether the Brazilian will face the Gunners.

"He had a little bit of swelling on the ankle," confirmed Hughes.

"We do not think there is a significant injury there but it is best to check to make sure there is no stress fracture.

"Once we get the results we can decide whether he plays tomorrow or not."

Mexico’s Blanco PK Downs Honduras

Mexico extended their unbeaten run to four matches with a 1-0 hard fought win against Honduras at Azteca Stadium on Wednesday night.

Cuauhtémoc Blanco scored from the penalty spot in the 75th minute.

Giovani dos Santos earned the penalty.

Honduran goalkeeper Noel Valladares kept the match close with a number of key saves throughout the match. Mexico rises to 2nd in the CONCACAF World Cup qualification standings with two matches remaining. Honduras is still in position to advance, currently 3rd in the standings.

Paraguay Extend Argentina Troubles

Paraguay extended Argentina's troubles with a 1-0 win over Diego Maradona's side in CONMEBOL World Cup qualifying in Asuncion on Wednesday night. Nelson Haedo's first half strike was enough for the win and also booked Paraguay's ticket to South Africa in 2010.

With the loss, the pressure on Diego Maradona will only increase. The former on field Argentinean hero has not been able to duplicate his form from the sidelines as Argentina has dropped three successive qualifiers and 4 of six and look in danger of missing out on the World Cup for the first time since 1970.

The lone goal was set up nicely by the home side. Haedo and Edgar Bonet broke through the midfield with a clever one two before Haedo was played in by striker Salvador Cabanas and finished past a diving Sergio Romero in the 27th minute.

Juan Sebastion Veron did not help his team's cause when he picked up his second yellow card in the 54th minute and was sent to the showers early.

Paraguay currently sit in 2nd place on the CONMEBOL table while Argentina has dropped to fifth. The top five teams automatically advance to the World Cup while the 5th place team has to play the 4th place CONCACAF finisher in a home and away series with the winner advancing to South Africa.

Clark Strike Lifts U.S. over T&T

Ricardo Clark blasted home a long range shot to lift the United States over Trinidad and Tobago 1-0 in World Cup qualifying at Hasely Crawford Stadium on Wednesday night. Tim Howard kept the U.S. in the game with a fine first half that included two saves and a little luck as the one ball the beat him hit off the crossbar.

After a less than stellar first half, the Red, White and Blue looked much better in the second half and finally broke through in the 62nd minute. Landon Donovan received a ball wide on the left flank before cutting inside before opting to lay the ball of centrally to the Houston Dynamo midfielder 30 yards from goal. Clark gathered the ball and shot from 25 yards with a swerving ball the Trinidad and Tobago goalkeeper Clayton Ince appeared to have it lined up only for it to curve away from his diving effort.

It was Clark's second goal for the U.S.

Donovan almost sealed the win late with a touch from close range off a Stuart Holden cross only to see it narrowly go over the crossbar.

The first half was a different story with the U.S. struggling to keep possession or create dangerous chances on goal while the Soca Warriors had their own difficulties with possession but were able to breakdown the U.S. defense and create several chances.

Carlos Edwards was the catalyst for the home side. The Ipswich Town midfielder caused problems for Jonathan Bornstein and Jonathan Spector with his speed on both flanks.

The best chance in the first half came off poor U.S. defending. Cornell Glen took a long throw in off the bounce and was able to sneak past Spector and Carlos Bocanegra to get in on goal. The San Jose Earthquakes forward was to eager with the ball and seeing Howard coming off his line chipped the Everton netminder only to see if hit off the crossbar.

The U.S. has accomplished their goal in taking the full points from the bottom two teams on the table and now will turn their attention to Honduras and Costa Rica with a spot at the 2010 FIFA World Cup on the line. The U.S. currently stands in first place on the table with 16 points [Honduras has yet to play].

U.S. and T&T Face Must Win Match

The American path to the 2010 FIFA World Cup becomes clearer with each match played, and despite being on the road, tonight's encounter with Trinidad and Tobago can realistically be called a ‘must win’ match if the U.S. wants have breathing room down the stretch.

The U.S. schedule has played into their hands with back to back matches against the bottom two teams in the group, El Salvador last Saturday and Trinidad and Tobago on Wednesday night, but it means nothing if the Red, White and Blue can not match Saturday’s win by taking the full points against T&T to put themselves in good position heading into the final two matchdays.

The challenge is more difficult than on the weekend with the U.S. traveling on the road to Hasely Crawford Stadium where they lost 2-1 in the semifinal phase of 2010 World Cup that ended a seven match unbeaten run in World Cup qualifying for the U.S.

Bob Bradley’s side will also be facing a team on the brink of elimination. The Soca Warriors will be eliminated with a USA win or if Costa Rica and Mexico do not lose on Wednesday. But T&T head coach Russell Latapy has opted to play this with his full squad and not turn to the future and test younger players as many in the local press called for.

With Jay DeMerit out while nursing a strained left groin, the U.S. defense will be pleased to have the return of big man Oguchi Onyewu. The recent A.C. Milan signing will bolster the backline with size, experience and confidence to help the side get into attack.

With the more composed backline the midfield unit will have more freedom and Landon Donovan will no doubt once again pace the central unit and be the key to getting the U.S. in attacking positions.

The biggest question heading into the match is the fitness of Charlie Davies. The FC Sochaux striker has been critical in the U.S. recent form and suffered a contusion on his left calf against El Salvador although is expected to be available for selection on Wednesday.

The U.S. holds a commanding 15-2-3 record in the series dating back to 1982, with 32 goals scored and 10 conceded. All eight of the USA’s matches in Trinidad have been held in Port-of-Spain, where the U.S. holds a 4-2-2 record.

In other CONCACAF Matchday 8 matches, El Salvador plays host to Costa Rica at Estadio Cuscatlan and Honduras looks for a massive result against Mexico in Estadio Azteca.

Terry calls for Wembley support

John Terry has urged England fans to recreate the hostile atmosphere Fabio Capello's side encountered in Zagreb and help defeat Croatia.

But the England skipper also warned his players to keep their discipline in what is expected to be another physical battle with Slaven Bilic's side.

England will clinch their place in next summer's finals in South Africa if they collect three points and avenge being knocked out of the Euro 2008 qualifiers by Croatia.

Terry said: "The crowd could be really important to us to get us off to a really good start.

"When we went to Zagreb, things were hostile and difficult - and it can be difficult sometimes in such an atmosphere, especially at the start of the game.

"We are hoping our fans are behind us and they can play a key role for us tomorrow night."

Croatia targeted hat-trick hero Theo Walcott and Joe Cole for some rough treatment last September although England had the last laugh with a 4-1 success.

Terry is also aware of the pre-match comments made by Bilic about England being a flawed team and lacking in "Englishness".

Terry said: "It is very important we don't get sucked into any individual battles. I think individually we've all got to win our battles and collectively.

"But at the same time we walk away and try and be mature about things and don't try and get sucked into the things they will be trying to suck us into.

"Bilic is someone I respect as a player in England and as a manager but I don't want to put any fuel on the fire and give anyone ammunition.

"We want to concentrate on ourselves and our own game and if Croatia want to play mind games, let them do that. Hopefully we can concentrate on the right things and that will be on the football field tomorrow night."

Terry is desperate for England to avenge the disappointment of two years ago and was a frustrated spectator because of injury when Croatia won 3-2 at Wembley.

He said: "To lead England to the World Cup will be very important for me collectively and personally. Being captain the second time around, with the disappointment of the Euros, will be special.

"That is still hurting in the back of my mind and the back of everyone's mind. It's a chance now to put that right. We have got ourselves in a great position.

"Now it is down to us to finish off the job. To finish it off early will be ideal and we've got a great chance to do that."

Terry has made some impassioned speeches before previous England games but will not adapt that approach before tomorrow's game.

He said: "Will there be any speech? No, not before the game. All the lads will say their piece. There will be no big speech but everyone knows what they've got to go out there and do.

"Messages like that will be beamed across the dressing room before the game from everyone."

Terry will also have little sympathy if the likes of Cristiano Ronaldo, Lionel Messi and Franck Ribery - three of the biggest stars in the game - fail to make the finals with Portugal, Argentina and France respectively.

He said: "I think it is good for England. When we didn't qualify, I went back to Chelsea and the attitude of the foreign players was 'England are not there, we have a better chance of qualifying'.

"That is the mentality of the other nations. If we can go there, with some big teams not there, even better."

Iniesta close to Barcelona comeback

Barcelona have revealed that Andres Iniesta could come into contention for Saturday's trip to Getafe.

The gifted playmaker has been out of action for three months with a thigh muscle injury.

He has not featured for Barca since their Champions League final success over Manchester United at the end of May.

The 25-year-old was also forced to pull out of Spain's Confederations Cup campaign this summer.

He is, however, closing in on full fitness and is expected to be back in the fold at Barca in the near future.

A viral infection has slightly delayed his return, but Pep Guardiola could return him to the heart of his midfield this weekend.

Drogba: More to me than goals

Chelsea striker Didier Drogba claims that his unselfish attitude in creating chances for other players does not get the credit it deserves.

The Ivory Coast international believes his work off the ball goes unnoticed at times and insists it is this work ethic which will help the Blues to win the Premier League title this term.

"I often sacrifice myself for the good of the team," Drogba declared.

"I don't look at my scoring statistics. Have you ever seen any other great striker do as much defending as I do?

"We are very confident, and relaxed as well. Our team is solid and physically very strong.

"(Manager) Carlo Ancelotti is highly respected here, and the players regard him as one of us. That's why I consider the spirit within the camp to be really good."

Inter chief Moratti 'crazy' for Messi

Inter Milan defender Javier Zanetti has said club president Massimo Moratti is desperate to bring Lionel Messi to the San Siro.

The 36-year-old defender, who is the most capped player in Argentinian history, has heaped praise on his international team-mate but also says he is settled at Barcelona.

Inter president Moratti, though, is reportedly desperate to sign the young superstar and will do anything to persuade him to move to the Nerazzurri.

"Moratti is crazy for Messi," Zanetti told El Mundo Deportivo.

"He wanted to have him in the team but for the moment it's impossible. With Messi in the team Inter would be extraordinary.

"But Leo doesn't want to move from Barcelona - all the times that we have spoken about that he says that he is very happy, that he has fun and that he loves the way Barca plays football and all their people.

"That shows that he is a leader. But maybe when I am an official of Inter I have the chance to bring him over."

Essien proud of Ghana qualification

Michael Essien has revealed the "fantastic feeling" of qualifying for the World Cup finals after he scored one of two goals against Sudan.

The Black Stars, who made their first appearance at the 2006 edition in Germany, became the first African nation other than the hosts to book their place in South Africa after a 2-0 scoreline in Accra - the result on Sunday coupled by Benin's 1-1 draw with Mali earlier in the day aiding their cause.

It left Milovan Rajevac's team needing a win at the Ohene Djan Stadium and, in front of a capacity 45,000 spectators, they did not disappoint.

Inter Milan midfielder Sulley Muntari (13) broke the deadlock early on, before Chelsea star Essien (53) added a second to make it four wins from four for the west Africans in Group D.

They now join hosts South Africa, Brazil, Holland, Japan, Australia, South Korea and North Korea as the eighth team to qualify.

The 26-year-old said: "It was so important to win, regardless of how we achieved the result. It is still special for us professionals to return home and bring joy to the people of Ghana.

"Teamwork brought us success as in previous qualifiers. The side did not feel under pressure because we are used to playing in front of packed crowds like the one in Accra tonight.

"The people of Ghana wanted us to win and we did not let them down. What a fantastic feeling to be the first African country to qualify for the first World Cup to be staged in Africa."

Serbian Rajevac, who only took charge of Ghana in August last year, described the achievement as his greatest ever success.

He told Kick Off Ghana: "Ghana has been there once and they understand that it is important to be there again.

"The second time is always significant and I am so happy for everyone who came out here today.

"This is my greatest success as a coach and I hope there will be more to come."

U.S. Rallies To Victory

The U.S. Men’s National Team got goals from Clint Dempsey and Jozy Altidore in the closing minutes of the first half to come from behind and defeat El Salvador 2-1. With the victory, the U.S. moved into second place in the six-team final round of 2010 FIFA World Cup qualifying with just three matches remaining.

The U.S. fell behind in the 32nd minute when Christian Castillo headed home after a poor U.S. clearance, but after a handful of near-misses a Landon Donovan free kick found Dempsey for the equalizer in the 41st minute. Five minutes later, with seconds left before the halftime whistle, Altidore put the U.S. in the lead for good when he nodded home another service from Donovan, this time in the run of play.

"I think what stood out after the goal was strong response from everybody on the field,” said U.S. Men’s National Team head coach Bob Bradley. “That says a lot about what these guys are all about. They understand how difficult these games are and how competitive they are. The second half we certainly had some opportunities to get the third goal, which is always important. When you don't, you sometimes need a big save and Timmy Howard made a big save at the end."

The U.S. is tied with Honduras on 13 points, but Honduras holds the top spot with a better goal differential which they increased this evening with a 4-1 victory against Trinidad & Tobago. Mexico jumped to third place after a surprising 3-0 victory against Costa Rica at Estadio Saprissa. Costa Rica slipped to fourth place with the defeat.

The final round of qualifying resumes on Sept. 9, when the U.S. visits Trinidad & Tobago at Hasely Crawford Stadium in Port-of-Spain, Trinidad. ESPN Classic and Galavision will televise the game live at 7 p.m. ET.

The win continued the United States’ dominance in home World Cup qualifiers against El Salvador, as they now hold a 12-0-2 record dating back to 1977.

With referee Jose Pineda stopping play several times for fouls, neither team was able to establish much of a rhythm early on in the match.

In the 28th minute, Dempsey and Charlie Davies almost hooked up for the first U.S. goal of the day. Collecting a poor clearance by El Salvador, Benny Feilhaber took the ball from the right side of the pitch, chipping it over his marker and down on his left foot. Moving to the left, he passed it off to Davies, who was patiently waiting along the left sideline. The forward paused, pushed the ball past his defender and turned on the jets to beat his marker to the endline. Davies looked up and sent the ball to a waiting Dempsey right at the penalty spot, but the Fulham striker’s left-footed shot went wide to the left.

Five minutes later, that missed opportunity stood glaring as El Salvador got on the scoreboard first. Jonathan Bornstein’s mishit clearance fell inside the U.S. box to the feet of Zelaya. With time to collect the ball inside the top corner, the forward sent a floating ball towards Christian Castillo at the penalty spot. Castillo out-jumped defender Jonathan Spector and headed the ball past the outstretched fingers of the wrong-footed Howard.

In the 39th minute the U.S. threatened again, this time drawing even closer to that elusive tying goal. The U.S. worked a quick free kick to Spector on the right side. Spector sent in the cross and found Dempsey diving for the header, but the midfielder’s attempt hit the ground and agonizingly bounced over the frame.

Seconds later Davies again was sent in with a through ball, this time from Altidore. Davies beat the ‘keeper to the ball and got off a shot from a tough angle, but defender Mardoqueo Gonzalez was able to get back and clear the shot off the line to keep El Salvador in the lead.

Despite the near misses, the U.S. seemed to grow stronger, and after knocking on the door for the last 10 minutes they finally broke through with the tying goal from Dempsey. Castillo was called for a handball on the right side of the field midway in the El Salvador half, providing the U.S. with a free kick. Donovan whipped the ball into the box where Dempsey beat El Salvador’s offside trap and was all alone in front of the goal to hit a diving header perfectly into the bottom left hand corner from just outside the six yard box. Dempsey now has five goals in the 2010 qualifying campaign.

Refusing to let up, the Americans continued attacking in an attempt to take control of the game going into halftime. After earning two corners that were cleared out by the Salvadoran defense, Donovan again sent in a cross from the left side. The deflection fell to Michael Bradley on the left side, and the midfielder used his body to shield the ball as he dribbled up and down the left side of the goal box, looking for an option. He eventually pulled a second defender towards him, leaving Donovan wide open to receive his simple pass and then send in yet another cross. This one was perfectly placed right on the penalty spot, where Altidore leapt up and powered a header into the left side netting for a picture-perfect goal in the second minute of stoppage time. Altidore’s sixth goal in the 2010 qualifying cycle – and his second game-winner – moved him into the top spot in the USA’s qualifying scoring list through 15 matches in the campaign.

Looking at a one goal deficit at the start of the second half, El Salvador head coach Carlos de los Cobos was forced to make his first substitution of the game early, bringing on Osael Romero for Arturo Alvarez in the 50th minute after Alvarez appeared to aggravate a sore hamstring.

The U.S. appeared to gain the insurance goal in the 58th minute off the foot of Jozy Altidore, but the breakaway goal was called off. Starting the attack in their own end, Donovan sent a long pass along the ground to Dempsey at the halfway line. Pushing it around his defender, it appeared to go too far ahead before Dempsey raced to lunge and push the ball through for Altidore from just inside the half before sliding into a defender. The pass fell perfectly to Altidore, who walked in alone and slotted a shot right through the Montes’ legs, and while the offside flag stayed down, Pineda whistled Dempsey for a foul and the goal was nullified.

Four minutes later, the U.S. displayed their counter-attacking prowess yet again. After stripping Zelaya at the top of the box, Bocanegra got the ball to Donovan who played a quick give and go with Bradley. Taking the return pass 30 yards upfield, Donovan then played a give and go with Dempsey, but Dempsey’s return pass was a step in front of his partner. Coming back to take the touch was Altidore, but he was whistled offside.

In the 72nd minute, Charlie Davies went down with a contusion to his left calf, causing Bradley to make his first substitution of the day. Bringing on midfielder Stuart Holden, Dempsey moved up top to partner with Altidore.

The final two U.S. substitutions came in the final ten minutes of the match, with Bradley calling upon Real Salt Lake midfielder Kyle Beckerman in the 80th minute for Feilhaber and Jose Francisco Torres in the 85th for Altidore.

Desperate to steal a point, El Salvador started throwing numbers forward for the final minutes of the match. They almost succeeded in the 87th minute, after Zelaya sent in a cross from the left side of the pitch. The ball fell to the chest of Castillo, who brought the ball down and tapped it to an open William Reyes. The second-half substitute took the pass with his back to the goal from the center of the box, and while turning put the point-blank shot on frame, where Howard made the big save needed to preserve the win, diving down to his right to palm the shot.

As the game drew to a close in the 89th minute, Holden almost created the final goal, using fresh legs to steal the ball away from Denis Umanzor. After stripping the left back, Holden took the ball to the end line and sent in a cross that was too high for Donovan, leaving the ball for a streaking Torres who slammed a header towards the goal, but Montes made his best save of the day to keep El Salvador only down a goal.
