John Terry has been stripped of the England captain's armband following talks with coach Fabio Capello on Friday, according to reports.

The Chelsea center-back held a meeting with Capello at Wembley following a week of tabloid allegations concerning an alleged affair with an ex-partner of Manchester City left-back Wayne Bridge.

And although the Football Association have refused to comment on reports that Terry has been sacked as England captain, speculation is mounting that the 29-year-old defender has been axed as his country's skipper.

Terry's demotion, reported by Sky News, would be a bitter blow for player and manager.

When most pundits expected Capello to name Rio Ferdinand as his skipper prior to the friendly with the Czech Republic in August 2008, the Italian instead turned to Terry as his on-pitch leader.

It was felt the Chelsea star was better at galvanizing players around him, with Capello paying little attention to the wider role many believed Ferdinand was more capable of fulfilling.

Terry has done everything asked of him as England have marched on towards this summer's World Cup in South Africa.

But there have been issues away from the pitch that have not sat easily with bosses at the FA.

Both Terry's parents have been in the headlines for the wrong reasons, while the defender himself was accused of using his role as England skipper for personal gain when an agency to which he was linked included his status in an e-mail offering the player's services to enhance their business.

Terry emerged unscathed from all of this until last week, when a super-injunction, preventing details of an alleged affair with Vanessa Perroncel from being reported, was lifted by the High Court.

As the former girlfriend of Bridge and mother of the City defender's son, Perroncel's name brought with it a sense of scandal that only intensified with Terry's efforts to keep the affair private.

Super-sub Mohamed Gedo scored the only goal five minutes from time to help Egypt defend their African Nations Cup crown with victory over brave Ghana.

The Pharaohs, who struggled to create many openings through the game, looked unlikely to score as the game drifted towards extra-time - until the Ittihad striker struck his fifth goal of the competition to break the resilience of their opponents.

It handed Hassan Shehata's men a record seventh title and third in succession in Angola, but they were made to work hard for the success at the Estadio do Novembre 11 in Luanda.

Both teams were handed a boost before the start with Wael Gomaa and Emad Moteab passed fit for the Pharaohs and Richard Kingson, Agyeman Opoku and Hans Sarpei all included for the Black Stars.

There was little action to speak of at the start - an early corner from Kwadwo Asamoah catching out goalkeeper Essam El-Hadary, while Egypt's first half-chance came via a wayward strike over the top from captain Ahmed Hassan.

Andre Ayew then failed to punish the Pharaohs when Gomaa mistakenly headed into his path - the shot was dragged wide - as the early action changed nicely between both ends.

Although the Egyptians seemed to have more of the ball, their opponents seemed to be creating the better openings - Asamoah again illustrating this when his well-struck 20-yard strike forced El-Hadary into a tricky low catch.

Just past the half-hour mark the isolated Asamoah Gyan, who scored three of his side's four goals in the competition, showed good trickery down the left, but had no-one to look for in the box.

Seconds from half-time, Hosny Abd Rabo's searching free-kick from the right almost broke the deadlock, but Hassan and Moteab both missed the headed chance.

After the restart, Agyeman Opoku was lucky to get away with just a yellow card after diving in two-footed on Ahmed Al-Muhammadi.

The two sides did not seem overly keen to attack, though, with Gyan coming closest for his side after 51 minutes with a zipping 25-yard free-kick that flew inches over, followed by Ayew firing wide from the edge of the box.

Shehata had seen enough, sending on Mohamed Abdel-Shafy - who scored in the 4-0 win over Algeria - for Sayed Moawad.

His side began to threaten more, but still struggled to find real rhythm - Hossam Ghaly the latest to drag wide from distance - while a quickly taken free-kick from Anthony Annan almost saw Gyan catch out El-Hadary, only to drift wide.

When Moteab finally managed to steal behind the Ghana defence after the hour-mark he was quickly closed down by Kingson, before Shehata decided to thrown on the tournament's leading marksman, Gedo, with 20 minutes remaining.

The game began to open up and Gyan should have found the target when the ball fell to him on the edge of the box, but he made amends with a testing 20-yard free-kick which forced the Egyptian goalkeeper to punch away.

Then came the decisive moment of the game with Gedo, cutting into the box from the left, playing a neat one-two with Mohamed Zidan and calmly arrowing the ball beyond Kingston to break Ghanaian hearts.

Milovan Rajevac's men tried desperately to get the goal they needed but Asamoah and Eric Addo wasted good chances and the west Africans had to settle for second place.

Manchester City forward Robinho is to rejoin Santos on a six-month loan after the two clubs reached an agreement on the deal on Thursday.

City confirmed in a statement on their website that the Brazilian club will pay all of the player's wages and bonuses for the period, which begins immediately and ends on August 4.

Manager Roberto Mancini said: "Robinho is someone who needs to be playing regularly and we wish him well for the period of his loan."

The 26-year-old, who began his career at Santos, will leave for Brazil on Sunday.

Robinho joined City from Real Madrid in the summer of 2008 for a British record transfer fee of £32.5million, the club's first big signing under the ownership of Sheikh Mansour bin Zayed.

The Brazil forward initially impressed at City and ended his first season as the club's top scorer with 15 goals.

But his form tailed off and he was often criticized for his performances away from Eastlands.

This season he has struggled to hold down a first-team place, first under Mark Hughes and later under new boss Mancini.

Robinho has made no secret in recent days of his desire to return to his old club as he seeks to consolidate his place in the Brazil side ahead of this summer's World Cup.

The player's last appearance came in the 4-2 FA Cup win over Scunthorpe at the weekend, an occasion he marked with a goal.

The England striker settled a pulsating Carling Cup semi-final when he turned home Ryan Giggs' cross from close range and then did a flip on the way to his celebration at the corner flag.

The Portuguese international was shown a straight red in the 70th minute of the Primera Division encounter after his swinging elbow caught Patrick Mtiliga in the face, leaving the Denmark defender with a broken nose.

Madrid have decided to appeal the decision and the hearing has been set for Thursday.

Ronaldo believes the ban is harsh.

"Obviously I don't like it," he told AS. "I think the punishment is excessive and I hope the appeals committee reduce it.

"I want to play every week and I'm angry.

"My intention was always to play. It was never my intention to deceive the referee. I just tried to get rid of the Malaga player marking me. I hit him and I asked for his forgiveness. I'm very sorry about his nose."

If Madrid are unsuccessful in their appeal, Ronaldo, who also scored both goals in the 2-0 victory, will miss Saturday's testing trip to fifth-placed Deportivo La Coruna as well as the home clash with Espanyol.

Landon Donovan's loan switch to Everton could aid USA when they tackle England in this summer's mouthwatering World Cup showdown.

USA coach Bob Bradley believes the forward's spell at Goodison Park from LA Galaxy will benefit his side when they come up against Fabio Capello's men.

The two will go head-to-head in South Africa on 12 June in Group C, which also features Algeria and Slovenia.

Bradley has been impressed with his captain's contribution in Everton's impressive draw away to Arsenal and the 2-0 home victory over Manchester City on Saturday.

"Landon has had an opportunity to make a big difference and he has played a huge role for Everton in their past couple of games. It is great for him and great for the club," he said.

"This is not only good for him, but it works really well for us leading up to the World Cup. He is such an influential player for us, and for him to be in this kind of situation at Everton, playing in England, is key.

"He has gone to Everton and been part of two really good efforts. When you play for a team like Everton, and Landon is experiencing this now - we talk about it a lot in our team - what a good feeling it is when everyone on the team is committed and understands what it takes to win a game."

Bradley believes the added spotlight from playing in the Premier League will help Donovan deal with the inevitable hype and expectation which will surround their meeting with the Three Lions.

He added: "It will help him specifically regarding the World Cup. Any time you go into games where a lot is expected, there is the accountability side of things where people are looking closely at everything you do.

"When you play well, when you work hard, when the team plays well, you get credit, but if it goes the other way then people will notice that too and I think that is important for him.

"Landon has shown in the last year a great level of maturity and confidence and motivation to continue to move himself along. He has talked about how he sees things differently, how he has changed.

"I think most importantly when you hear him talk like that it is easy to see that he feels good on the inside about the way he has played, some of the challenges he has faced and the way he has improved, or grown is maybe the better word."

Carlos Tevez has defended his celebrations against Manchester United, saying they were "a response to them saying I was not worth the money".

Tevez, who joined City in the summer after United decided not to spend £25million to keep him, goaded former United team-mate Gary Neville during his two-goal performance in the 2-1 Carling Cup semi-final first-leg victory. Neville publicly backed Sir Alex Ferguson's decision not to buy the forward.

The Argentina striker also gestured towards the United directors but insists there was "nothing malicious intended".

"Gary was very disrespectful, which is out of character, but he didn't know the whole story of why I left Manchester United and I believe I deserved his respect," Tevez said.

"Football is a form of theater and it was just a form of banter. There was nothing malicious intended. I was not trying to incite anyone but I was entitled to say to Neville that he should have been more respectful.

"For the second goal I ran to the touchline and cupped my ears and looked up to the part of the ground where the United directors were sitting, and also to Ferguson in the dugout, because I wanted them to know this was my response to them saying I was not worth the money.

"People from United have been speaking about me publicly and criticizing me, but I wanted to do my talking on the pitch because that was the best way of responding to all these people, such as Neville, who were saying United were right to let me go."

There were fears that Dempsey had suffered cruciate ligament damage after picking up an injury during the Cottagers' 2-0 defeat at Blackburn Rovers on Sunday.

He has undergone scans on the problem, with the Premier League club revealing Dempsey does not require surgery on the problem.

Fulham are optimistic the 26-year-old will be able to return before the end of the season, giving Dempsey time to prove his fitness ahead of the World Cup.

A Fulham statement read: "During the Blackburn Rovers fixture on Sunday 17 January, Clint Dempsey sustained moderate damage to a ligament in his right knee.

"Following the results of a scan, early indications are positive in that no operation is required.

"At this stage it is thought that the injury will not prevent him from featuring for Fulham, prior to the end of the season.

"Whilst obviously disappointed, Clint is focused on his rehabilitation and will work hard, in line with medical advice, to return at the soonest opportunity."

Manchester City boss Roberto Mancini says Emmanuel Adebayor will be given as much time as he needs to get over Friday's gun attack in Angola.

Adebayor has flown back to Togo on the insistence of the Prime Minister for three official days of mourning. He will then technically be free to fly back to England.

There have been some rather crude suggestions that City are trying to rush Adebayor back in time to face Everton at Goodison Park on Saturday evening.

Blues officials insist that is not true and in any case, Mancini wants to establish Adebayor is mentally fit enough to play before he even considers it.

"I am very sorry for him," said Mancini.

"I will just wait for him. When he comes back I will speak with him and let him decide when he wants to play. That will be OK with me."

The early reports claim several players were wounded although Manchester City confirmed Emmanuel Adebayor was not one of the injured.

The bus was traveling through Cabinda, the oil rich territory in Angola fighting for independence. The Angolan government called it an ‘act of terrorism.’

"We were machine-gunned, like dogs," Togo striker Thomas Dossevi told France's RMC radio. "At the border with Angola - machine-gunned! I don't know why. I thought it was some rebels. We were under the seats of the bus for 20 minutes, trying to get away from the bullets."

Togo are due to play Ghana, Burkina Faso and Ivory Coast but have indicated they may withdraw from the tournament.

Landon Donovan insists he is treating his 10-week stay at Everton seriously and hopes to be able to make a difference to the Toffees' season.

The United States international has joined from the Los Angeles Galaxy during the Major League Soccer close season but knows he has to have an immediate impact if he is to be successful.

However, he has already ruled out returning to the club on a longer-term basis should his short spell in England prove to be profitable.

"I'm very excited about this opportunity. This is almost the perfect opportunity when everything is put together like this," said the 27-year-old, who is looking forward to joining up with national team goalkeeper Tim Howard.

"Tim was the first guy to call me, along with my agent, when he heard Everton might be interested and we talked about it and what the expectations were.

"That was an important step for me to realize it is not just coming in for a few months and having a kick-about.

"This is the middle of the season, they have a few injuries and need immediate help so I have to be ready and that helped me prepare.

"The reality is I'm here to do a job and help the team win. I'm not just here to have fun for a few months.

"What I'm good at is creating chances and that is what I'll try to do here.

"I just like to be a danger to the other team and I think most sides can use a player like that - now I have to prove I belong and help score some goals."

Donovan is following a path laid down by Galaxy team-mate David Beckham who yesterday began a short loan spell with AC Milan for the second successive year.

The American, who spent a similar period last season at Bayern Munich, said his English team-mate had backed his decision to move to the Premier League.

"David and I we speak a lot about his time here and he is confident I will do fine," added Donovan.

"Knowing him, being around him and playing with him I can see what it takes to make it at a place like this and if you are not ready and prepared you can get passed by.

"That is good learning from me and I am taking these two and a half months very seriously.

"This is a great opportunity for me and I don't want it to pass me by so I'm going to make the most of it."

But no matter how well he does Donovan expects to be heading back to Los Angeles come late March.

"I've just signed an extension with LA so my plans are to be in LA for the next few years at least and then we'll see what happens," he said.

"Everyone knows anything can happen in the world of football but, for me, all I can focus on is what I'm doing on the field."

Greek Europa League chasers Aris FC have completed the loan signing of Benfica attacker Freddy Adu, their second such capture of a U.S. international in a week's time.

The 20-year old will now join up with Fulham loan item Eddie Johnson, who is set to be in Thessaloniki until the end of the season, to help improve the fourth place team's sagging offense. Adu, however, is slated to be at Kleanthis Vikelidis Stadium through the conclusion of the 2010/11 campaign and Aris FC hold a buy option.

The move represents another chance for Adu to jump-start a career often stalled since he left Real Salt Lake for Benfica in 2007.

Despite some initial success off the bench under then-manager José Antonio Camacho, plus early appearances in Champions League and UEFA Cup matches, the youngster has racked up just 15 appearances across all competitions for the Portuguese giants. Loan spells at Monaco and Belenenses did not pan out, with the latter cutting Adu's stay short to send him back to Benfica early on January 1st.

Aris FC, coached by former Inter Milan and Valencia boss Héctor Cúper, next take the field for Greek Super League action on Sunday when derby visitors Iraklis cross town for a visit. It remains unclear whether either Adu or Johnson will dress for the contest.

It is six years since Leeds' loyal supporters have made the trip to Old Trafford - and not since 1981 had they returned across the Pennines celebrating victory.

But in manager Simon Grayson they have a man with the club in his heart, and in Beckford they have a striker capable of shooting them to better things - should he stay.

When his 20th goal of the campaign trundled past Tomasz Kuszczak, you could just sense the hosts would not be saved - not even by the five minutes of stoppage time that must have shredded a few nerves before the final whistle.
