The defending champions of Europe won Group C with a 10-1-1 record. Though the numbers look impressive it was not the most powerful group and Greece –while consistently solid- did not play spectacularly. They were thumped 4-1 by Turkey at home in Athens but did return the favor, however, with a 1-0 win in Istanbul.
The Greek roster will feature a lot of names that won’t be as familiar to fans as those of some other teams but it will be a cohesive and talented squad. Wearing the #9 jersey will be Angelos Charisteas (Nuremburg). The 28-year-old striker, who stands 6’3”, scored the winning goal against Portugal in the 2004 Final. Anchoring the midfield will be veteran Kostas Katsouranis (Benfica) and team captain Angelos Basinas (Real Mallorca), players who have proven themselves at both the international and top club levels. Another player who may feature in the team is Georgios Samaras (Celtic). The tall, young striker, who has spent time in the English Premier League as well as the Dutch Eredivisie, is considered a rising star.
In recent years Greece has been able to step up their level of play for the games that matter and they certainly proved the had the ability to rise to the occasion four years ago. We’ll soon find out if they can do it again.

Comments
Greece has a great national team. With Charisteas, it's even better. Their chances aren't as good this year in the tournament with Spain in their group.
