Portugal has exploded onto the international scene in recent years, reaching the semifinals of the 2000 European Championships and the 2006 World Cup plus making it all the way to the finals of the 2004 European Championships. The Portuguese only lost one game in qualifying, to eventual group champion Poland, but drew six times, including an embarrassing 1-1 tie with Armenia.
Portugal has been successful in recent European Championships, but this year it will have a not so secret weapon in the form of Cristiano Ronaldo (Manchester United). The winger scored 42 goals in all competitions for the Red Devils during the past season and is the main reason they won their second consecutive Premiership title. Ronaldo also scored United’s goal in the Champions League final, which the Red Devils won in penalties. Cristiano Ronaldo will also have Simao (Atletico Madrid) and United teammate Nani to help him on the offensive side while Chelsea’s Ricardo Carvalho will bring experience on the defensive end.
Portugal has the talent to make it out of the group stage, where they’ll play Switzerland, the Czech Republic and Turkey, and progress far into the tournament. Ronaldo will have to shine on one of Europe’s biggest stages, but if he does he can lead this team to glory.

I think that Cristiano Ronaldo will obviusly play a huge part for portugal, but i think that teams like Germany and Italy wont have too much of a problem containing him. I would love to see some of miguel veloso's talent, and I think that Nani will grow as a player in this euro and I hope Portugal can win it, but realisticly i belive a semifinal birth would be great

Portugal does have a very strong side this year but it is no gaurantee. There are tons of other stacked teams as well and it will all come down to who plays better on the day. As for C. Ronaldo, he is good but not the best. Messi is best player in world. You will see games where Ronaldo is shut down and does nothing, but Messi always impacts the game and that is what the best players do.

In my opinion, Cristiano Ronaldo is the BEST player in the world. Ronaldinho was good at one point, but recently he has done nothing to help his country or his club. Messi did not "show up" for the Barcelona v. Manchester United game, proving his inconsistence. Portugal has a young, but very talented squad this year. their best player, Cristiano Ronaldo, has been aided by many top players. I believe Portugal can go all the way.

i would lik to see portugal in the finals considering they have been playing recently. Portugal didnt take their last game too seriously, putting in their second string and just resting up since they had already won their group. Ronaldo is very good at setting up his teammates and he also looks good when the opponents try to stop him and leave the others wide open. They got Germany next round, and it should be a win, i am thinking 2-0 with ronaldo getting a goal and the assist.
As for Spain, they are playing excellent right now. Torres isnt doing much right now, but that will get to him in the next game and he will shine. Silva is doing well at setting up his players in the box. He shakes the defense and gives it up quick. In that last game against sweden there were times where he shoulda shot instead of pass, but its okay cuz another key player they have is Avilla who scored 4/6 goals for Spain, expect him to tear it up vs. greece next game.

Hey Wolfen my team is in Euro 08 the Dutch and it was no fluke they rolled over your heros Italy. Speaking of Italy you already act as if they have won the whole thing. You forget they still have to get past Spain. True like Italy Spain have not been red hot in Euro so far but I dont see them laying down for the diving, crooked Italian side. The Dutch are the only team left so far that have been getting better and better game after game. 9 goals in the first 3 games was not by way of luck. Who really knows who the final 2 teams will be as the Dutch have to get past Russia who are anything but a weak team. Just dont go crying in your pasta if your heros the Italians dont make it as stranger things have happened. I'm just glad that Ronaldo and company are out and I think it would be better for United if they take the cash and let the little prima donna hobble off to Madrid as United forged on after Cantana, Beck's and Rudd. I do hope Spain take out Italy though as Italy unlike my team the Dutch are lucky to be even making it out of the first round.

hey, most of you seem to know what your talking about, but look who is still in it!!! spain/russia and germay. yeah portugal is good but they religh on C.ronaldo WAYYYY to much!!! the game is played 11 v. 11, not with just one man! and what about germany? the have a great line up, they have more than just one superstar, and they play together! like when podolski found schweinsteiger!?! dont you think they deserve some recongnition. and lets not forget spain. they are the same way as germany!! lots of players with big names!!! everyone is looking to villa and torres, what about the mid's??? like xavi, inesta, fabregas, and silva. they are HUGE play-makers that gave villa and torres their chances!!! dont forget about the power house defense, puyol, ramos, and caillas!! spain is loaded but to win they have to play together and work off of each others strengths! and russia, they have the same thing portugal has, one or two good players, but the reason they are still in is because they play together!!! they dont always give the ball to pavluchenko 24/7, they do it when they need to and he takes advanatge of that! so to all you know-nothings, this is what i see in the euro, some really great teams, and some that go from good to great.
