Sweden made it to the quarterfinals of the 2004 European Championships and the semifinals in its first appearance, in 1992, but it has not had overwhelming success since its third place finish at the 1994 World Cup. Still, Sweden has a traditionally solid squad and it made it through qualifying with only two losses and only a draw separating it and Spain, which is favored by some to win the tournament.

Sweden will rely on its experience when it heads to Austria and Switzerland. Defender Olof Mellberg (Juventus) is one of four players on the roster with more than 80 international appearances and star striker Zlatan Ibrahimovic (Inter Milan) will pick up his 50th cap in the tournament despite only being 26 years old. Ibrahimovic’s scoring touch will benefit the Swedes greatly while veteran Marcus Allback (FC Copenhagen), who led the team in goals during qualifying, will help carry the load. Another Swedish player to watch will be Henrik Larsson (Helsingborgs FC), who had retired from international soccer after the 2006 World Cup but played well in the Swedish league last season and earned a spot.

Sweden is ranked 23rd in the world by FIFA and will have to take on Russia, Spain and defending European champions Greece, but it should contend for the second spot in the group based on its experience and ability to put the ball in the back of the net.

The defending champions of Europe won Group C with a 10-1-1 record. Though the numbers look impressive it was not the most powerful group and Greece –while consistently solid- did not play spectacularly. They were thumped 4-1 by Turkey at home in Athens but did return the favor, however, with a 1-0 win in Istanbul.

The Greek roster will feature a lot of names that won’t be as familiar to fans as those of some other teams but it will be a cohesive and talented squad. Wearing the #9 jersey will be Angelos Charisteas (Nuremburg). The 28-year-old striker, who stands 6’3”, scored the winning goal against Portugal in the 2004 Final. Anchoring the midfield will be veteran Kostas Katsouranis (Benfica) and team captain Angelos Basinas (Real Mallorca), players who have proven themselves at both the international and top club levels. Another player who may feature in the team is Georgios Samaras (Celtic). The tall, young striker, who has spent time in the English Premier League as well as the Dutch Eredivisie, is considered a rising star.

In recent years Greece has been able to step up their level of play for the games that matter and they certainly proved the had the ability to rise to the occasion four years ago. We’ll soon find out if they can do it again.

Russia pulled off arguably the biggest upset in the Euro 08 qualifying stage when it downed England 2-1 in Moscow and knocked England out of the second spot in their qualifying group. This is Russia’s third appearance at the European Championships and it will try to advance past the first round for the first time in its history.

Manager Guus Hiddink, who won six Eredivisie titles with PSV Eindhoven and is coaching his fourth national team, will count on striker Alexander Kerzhakov (Dynamo Moscow) to continue the scoring run that he started during qualifying, where he scored a team high six times. Russia brings a young team to Austria and Switzerland, with most of the players younger than 30, but Hiddink has proven that he can beat great teams despite the youth.

Many consider Russia the underdog of its group, which includes Sweden, Spain and the defending champions Greece, but that simply means Russia has nothing to lose and can concentrate on turning some heads and surprising the favorites.

Spain will take one of the most formidable sides in its history to Austria and Switzerland this summer to try to win its first European Championship since 1964. Though Spain stumbled twice during qualification, it still emerged on top of its group and received a favorable draw for the finals.

There are almost too many stars on Spain’s roster to name. The Spaniards will be led by their attack, with Fernando Torres (Liverpool), Cesc Fabregas (Arsenal) and David Villa (Valencia) likely creating many memorable moments and scoring a number of goals. Torres is coming off a season in which he scored 23 Premiership goals and tallied 32 times in all for Liverpool and Fabregas showed his talent, having a break out season for Arsenal. Spain will also have two very reliable options in goal, with Pepe Reina (Liverpool) backing up team captain 2008 La Liga winner Iker Casillas (Real Madrid).

Despite its history of having very talented teams, Spain has not made it past the quarterfinals of the European Championship or the World Cup since their Euro victory in 1964. Still, Spanish youth teams have had more success in recent years, and this young squad has all the tools to make a deep run in the tournament.

Coming off its runner up finish in the 2006 World Cup, France only narrowly qualified for Euro 2008. The French found themselves in the same qualifying group as Italy, the team that defeated them to take home the 2006 World Cup title, but surprisingly the Italians did not pose the biggest threat. Scotland, however, beat France twice and almost earned the second spot in the group, but France was simply too strong.

Though legendary Frenchman Zinedine Zidane retired from international soccer after the World Cup, France still has veteran Thierry Henry (Barcelona) to provide leadership. To provide the rest of the scoring output, France will turn to Nicolas Anelka (Chelsea) and Karim Benzema (Olympique Lyonnais), while William Gallas (Arsenal) will anchor the defense. France’s combination of veteran leadership and young talent will give it a good chance to avenge its World Cup and qualifying group losses to Italy.

Still, France will have stiff competition to advance past the group stage. Group C, with France, Italy, the Netherlands and Romania is stacked with good teams and is appropriately nicknamed the “Group of Death.” Any team could win it and France will need to be on top of its game if it wants to avoid the embarrassment of not reaching the quarterfinals.

The 21st century has not been kind to Romania so far, with the Tricolorii failing to qualify for a major tournament between the 2000 European Championships and the 2008 edition, but there is hope for the future. The Romanians stormed through Euro 08 qualifying, besting super talented Holland to take the top spot in their group, and head to Austria and Switzerland ranked 12th in the world by FIFA.

Leading the attack for Romania will be Adrian Mutu (Fiorentina), who has scored in nearly half of his 60 international appearances and is known as Il Fenomeno by his Italian supporters. Romania will also count on Marius Niculae (Inverness Caledonian Thistle FC) for more support offensively and veteran defender Cosmin Contra (Getafe CF) for leadership.

Though Romania has a strong side and should be competitive this summer, it will need more luck than it got during the group draw. The Romanians find themselves in the “Group of Death” along with 2006 World Cup winner and runner up Italy and France, along with a Holland team that is bursting with scoring threats. Still, Romania has a shot to surprise the continent and advance to the quarterfinals.

Holland has made it to the semifinals of four of the past five European Championships and won the 1988 tournament, but squeaked into this summer’s tournament by amassing only one more point than Bulgaria. Though the Oranje did not dominate qualifying, though, they still have the capability to make a strong run in the tournament.

Holland is oozing with talent, especially at the striker position. Veteran goal scorer Ruud van Nistelrooy (Real Madrid) led Holland through qualifying and will be called up on to lead the attack in Austria and Switzerland. Liverpool’s Dirk Kuyt will add experience, but Holland also boasts some of the best young strikers in the game. Klaas-Jan Huntelaar (Ajax) led the Eredivisie in goals in 2007-2008 and Ryan Babel (Liverpool) and Robin van Persie (Arsenal) are also poised to take the next step and contribute consistently. While Holland should provide some offensive fireworks, its defense will be anchored by Edwin van der Sar, the veteran keeper who has led Manchester United to two straight Premiership titles and has the Red Devils in the Champions League final.

Though Holland will bring a promising side to Euro 08, the group draw did not do the side any favors. The Orange Crush will have to fight 2006 World Cup finalists Italy and France plus Romania, who topped Holland’s qualifying group, for the two spots in the next round. Despite Holland’s placement in this tournament’s “Group of Death,” it is not outside the realm of possibility for the Oranje to advance to the quarterfinals.

Can the reigning world champs conquer their own continent as well? On paper the easy answer to that question would be yes. They certainly are a talent-laden squad and with a #3 FIFA world ranking (the highest of any European country) the Italians have to considered a favorite to lift the trophy in Vienna.

Italy won Group B in qualifying with a 9-2-1 record. They did lose 2-3 to France in the first meeting of the two powers and fought to a scoreless draw the second time they met. At Euro 2008, Italy will yet again be grouped with France so the showdown with Les Bleus will be a huge test for the Azzurri.

The always-reliable Gianluigi Buffon (Juventus) will minding the nets for Italy this summer and the defense in front of him is as solid as they come. The backline features superstar and team captain Fabio Cannavaro (Real Madrid) as well as veterans Massimo Oddo (AC Milan), Christian Panucci (Roma) and Gianluca Zambrotta (Barcelona). The midfield is equally as deep with established stars including Andrea Pirlo (AC Milan), Gennaro Gattuso (AC Milan) and Simone Perrota (Roma).

The only thing Italy might be lacking is goal-scoring punch. Luca Toni (Bayern Munich) will be the team’s main offensive weapon. He is more than capable but many of the country’s other forwards are lacking in experience. Of course big tournaments like this are where stars are born so it might be a chance for promising young players like Alberto Gilardino (AC Milan) or Fabio Quagliarella (Udinese) to really step up and claim the stage. If veteran Alessandro Del Piero (Juventus) features in the squad his wealth of international experience could be a big boost.

In the two European tournaments since then, however, Germany has not gotten through the first round. However, with a new coach, a third place finish in the 2006 World Cup, and a star-studded roster on the pitch, Germany looks ready to contend for another European title.

Bayern Munich star strikers Miroslav Klose and Lukas Podolski will lead the German attack this summer and will look to light up the scoreboard for a strong offensive team. Veterans Jens Lehmann (Arsenal) and captain Michael Ballack (Chelsea) will anchor this strong side and try to make Joachim Low’s first foray into major international competition as a head coach a successful one.

Germany did not win its qualifying group, but its strong performance at the beginning of the qualifying stage made it the first country other than co-hosts Austria and Switzerland to earn a trip to the tournament. The Germans will be considered the favorites to win their group, which includes Croatia, Poland and Austria, and German fans should expect a semifinal appearance for this historically strong nation.

Their only loss came after they had secured qualification.

Though Croatia lost in the first round of the 2004 European Championship, the Blazers are poised to make a run this time. Instead, Croatia will rely on midfielder Darijo Srna (Shakhtar Donetsk) and striker Mladen Petric (Borussia Dortmund) to carry the load. Srna tops the scoring list for active Croats and Petric poured in seven goals during qualifying.

Austria enters the 2008 European Championships with an automatic berth as one of the co-hosts. This will be Austria’s first appearance in the European Championships and while expectations are low, there is a chance that Austria can surprise some people.

Veteran Rene Aufhauser (Salzburg) must be a presence in Austria’s midfield and help youngster Roland Linz (Sporting Braga), who has played impressively in Portugal and even has UEFA Cup experience, create offensive opportunities. In addition to these two, 38-year-old Ivica Vastic (LASK Linz) will make a return to the Austrian National Team after a hiatus of more than two years.

Austria will be competing in Group B against regional rivals Germany, Poland and Croatia. Though the Austrians will be seen as underdogs by most, they will try to use their home field advantage to make a splash.

Though Poland got off to an inauspicious start to its Euro 08 qualifying campaign, losing to Finland and drawing against Serbia, it finished strong to win its group, beating 2004 European runner up Portugal in the process. This will be Poland’s first attempt at European glory and will give it a chance to showcase its skills in preparation for 2012, when it will co-host the tournament with Ukraine.

Poland will rely on striker Ebi Smolarek (Racing Santander) to maintain his scoring touch. Smolarek scored nine goals during qualifying, including a hat trick against Kazakhstan, and Poland has won every single game in which he has scored. In addition to Smolarek, Poland will need a good performance from Jacek Back (Austria Vienna), a veteran defender with more than 90 caps in his career. If those two stars and VfL Wolfsburg midfielder Jacek Krzynowek can play at the top of their games, Poland will have a shot to progress to the quarterfinals.

In Group B, Poland will take on regional rivals Germany, Austria and Croatia. Germany and Croatia are ranked higher than Poland’s 27 spot, but Poland should be competitive and will gain valuable experience for its 2012 tournament run.

Portugal has exploded onto the international scene in recent years, reaching the semifinals of the 2000 European Championships and the 2006 World Cup plus making it all the way to the finals of the 2004 European Championships. The Portuguese only lost one game in qualifying, to eventual group champion Poland, but drew six times, including an embarrassing 1-1 tie with Armenia.

Portugal has been successful in recent European Championships, but this year it will have a not so secret weapon in the form of Cristiano Ronaldo (Manchester United). The winger scored 42 goals in all competitions for the Red Devils during the past season and is the main reason they won their second consecutive Premiership title. Ronaldo also scored United’s goal in the Champions League final, which the Red Devils won in penalties. Cristiano Ronaldo will also have Simao (Atletico Madrid) and United teammate Nani to help him on the offensive side while Chelsea’s Ricardo Carvalho will bring experience on the defensive end.

Portugal has the talent to make it out of the group stage, where they’ll play Switzerland, the Czech Republic and Turkey, and progress far into the tournament. Ronaldo will have to shine on one of Europe’s biggest stages, but if he does he can lead this team to glory.

The last time Switzerland played in a major international tournament, the 2006 World Cup, it became the first team to be eliminated from the competition without allowing a single goal. The 2008 European Championship co-hosts will try to continue that legacy of a stout defense this summer as they try to turn their home field advantage into a berth in the quarterfinals.

Hakan Yakin (BSC Young Boys) and Alexander Frei (Borussia Dortmund) will look to key Switzerland’s attack. Frei was the top scorer in France’s Ligue 1 in 2005 and is only three goals short of being Switzerland’s all-time leader. The Swiss have battled some injury problems in the lead up to the tournament, and that status of some of their star players will have an effect on how far the team progresses in this tournament.

Switzerland has never made it past the first round of the European Championships and is ranked 48th in the world by FIFA. The Swiss face off against Turkey, Portugal and the Czech Republic in Group A and will need some tremendously inspired play to have a chance at making the quarterfinals.

Turkey enjoyed a mini-renaissance at the beginning of the century, making it to the quarterfinals of Euro 2000 and finishing third at the 2002 FIFA World Cup. Since those successes, however, Turkey has battled inconsistency. After winning its first four games of qualifying for this year’s tournament, including a 4-1 statement win over defending champs Greece, Turkey went winless over its next three games against three of the group’s minnows. Still, Turkey held on to qualify to go to Austria and Switzerland.

Turkey will rely on the veteran goal scoring of Nihat Kahveci (Villarreal CF), especially with the absence of all-time Turkey career goal leader Hakan Sukur being left off the roster. In his absence, Tuncay Sanli (Middlesbrough) and Kazim Kazim (Fenerbahce) will have a chance to shine. The position to watch for Turkey, however, is between the woodwork. Rustu Recber (Besiktas) has the experience and leadership, having spent time as the team’s captain, but he has been hindered by injuries and Volkan Demirel (Fenerbahce) seems ready to step into his place.

While the Czech Republic and Portugal are favored to emerge from Group A, the game between Turkey and Switzerland is probably the most anticipated and will likely have the most fireworks. A brawl broke out between the two teams after a 2006 World Cup qualifying match when the Swiss progressed on away goals, so if there is any drama in this group, it will probably be between these two teams.
