New York, NY (Sports Network) - Major League Soccer's top goal scorer will be given the Budweiser Golden Boot award, beginning this upcoming season.
The Golden Boot award replaces the Budweiser Scoring Champion, which has been in place since the inception of the league in 1996. MetoStars striker Amado Guevara and New England's Pat Noonan were joint winners of the award last year.
FIFA, the soccer world's governing body, distributes the Golden Boot Award to the top scorer in major competitions. MLS will keep with FIFA guidelines for the Golden Boot award in international competition, using assists as the first tiebreaker if two or more players have scored the same number of goals.
San Jose's Brian Ching would have won the MLS scoring award due to his 12 goals and four assists if the new system was in place last season. FC Dallas' Eddie Johnson would have finished second with his 12 goals and three assists.
Guevara finished with 10 goals and 10 assists while Noonan had 11 goals and eight assists.
