With 370, Messi makes history.

Since making his debut with Barcelona in 2003, Lionel Messi has crushed record after record. And now with 370 goals, Messi has broken Paulino Alcantara’s long-standing, all-time goal-scoring record of 369 goals with the club, a record that has stood since 1927. With his 370th goal, Messi adds another exclamation point to the declaration that he is one of the greatest players of all time.

FC Barcelona v CA Osasuna - La Liga

Messi broke the record just as he would have hoped and you would have expected, combining beautifully with Andrés Iniesta and smashing into the net with his left foot to down Osasuna on Sunday in a must-win La Liga match. The amazing Argentine set the mark with his second of three goals on the day in a dominant 7-0 tika-taka-filled display.

In honor of this auspicious occasion (and on the heels of Messi’s new colorful f50), adidas has created a limited edition (370 pairs worldwide) version of Messi’s signature F50 cleat. Every pair is numbered #001-#370 to represent each of Messi’s goals along the way to this record-breaking feat.

(***Update: We sold out of the limited edition Messi F50, almost immediately after sales opened this morning. Like the man himself, the cleat honoring him was the subject of worldwide interest and instant record-breaking success.)

According to adidas, the design is inspired by Messi’s ability to engineer goals with his strength, speed and uncanny ability to create space. The left and right cleat have different designs to reflect the percentage of the goals he has scored with his left foot, right foot and head. The color red on the left cleat represents goals scored with his left foot (80%).

The navy on the right cleat represents goals scored with the right foot (15%) and the black details on both cleats represent goals scored with his head (5%).Screen Shot 2014-02-26 at 10.13.04 AM

On the instep of the left shoe, Messi has added his son Thiago’s name and birthdate. On the right instep is Messi’s number 10.

Which of Messi’s goals stands out for you? Was it #180 (5/28/11)? The goal that clinched his second UEFA Champions League trophy. Or how about #282 (12/8/12)? The goal that toppled Gerd Muller’s 1972 record of 85 goals in a single year, to which Muller replied “my record stood for 40 years, and now the best player in the world has broken it, and I’m delighted for him.” Or is it #370, the goal that cemented Messi’s place in soccer history?

No matter which goal you choose as Messi’s most significant, you can count on many more from this already legendary player.
