Juventus forward Alessandro Del Piero has revealed that Manchester United were interested in signing him last summer.
The Italian international is enjoying a fine season with the Bianconeri in Serie B, but could instead have been plying his trade in the Premiership.
“It’s all true. I could have been a Red Devil,” Del Piero said in The Sun.
“Manchester United representatives contacted me in August.
“At first I was flattered, but I never really thought of leaving Juventus.
“I’ve been playing 13 years in this club and I want to finish my career here. I’m sure Alex Ferguson understood my decision.”
Del Piero is Juve’s all-time record goalscorer, and earlier in the season made his 500th appearance for the club.
Juve currently top Serie B and if their good form continues they will be back up in the top flight just a few months after being relegated for their part in the corruption scandal.
