Manchester United gave Chelsea a 3-0 thrashing at Old Trafford on Sunday, with Nemanja Vidic nodding the home side ahead in the dying minutes of the first half.

The Red Devils looked the more comfortable side in the opening stages of the match, although Darren Fletcher handed the Blues a free kick in a dangerous area for a clumsy tackle on Deco. Michael Ballack scuffed his subsequent effort into the wall.

Cristiano Ronaldo was next with a set-piece in perfect territory, smashing it powerfully toward goal, but it took a deflection on the way and headed out wide.

The game drove on at a pace and it was evident both teams were hungry for a win, but it did have its scrappy moments with four yellow cards being shown by the 30th minute.

United finally grabbed the lead on the stroke of half time. The hosts looked to have put themselves ahead through Ronaldo’s headed effort off a corner, but the referee disallowed the goal as it had been taken too quickly. Ryan Giggs sent another ball in and Vidic headed it into the back of the net to grab the advantage.

And Wayne Rooney made it two in the 63rd minute, slotting home a cross from Patrice Evra through the legs of Petr Cech in goal.

With three minutes remaining, Dimitar Berbatov put the final nail in the coffin, stabbing the ball into the back of the net from close range off a free kick from Ronaldo on the left flank.
