Maradona wants to coach the Argentina national team to cap his career.

Former Argentina superstar Diego Maradona says he aspires to the national team job currently held by Jose Pekerman – even if the Albiceleste win World Cup 2006..

“If my country wins the World Cup, in addition to being very happy, I will fight to have the opportunity to become coach of the national team,” he asserted. “And if Argentina do not win the cup I will fight even harder to get that chance.”

“Being the coach of the national team is something that I owe to myself,” said the football icon. “It would be the best way to end my career.”

  • ok

how is maradona going to coach is there new move going to be hit the ball in net with your hands… like maradona a few world cups back

  • barsenal

maradona was agreat footballer but he would not be a good coach . He should leave coaching alone. IF marodana was to coach the argentina national team it woald be a team of maradona look a likes.the team would be built on just offense not defense.Every player in his country that is short and can beat a few player he want’s them to play for the national team.He does not look for a team combine with defense and offense all he would look for is the next maradona.IF HE COACH ARGENTINA I DON’T THINK THEY’LL MAKE IT TO THE NEXT WORLD CUP.

  • Anonymous

maradona was a great player and understands soccer very well. he’s not stupid enough to play only on offense(by the way, brasil does that and they’ve won 5 world cups). I’m only worried because he’s never coached before and he doesn’t have coaching expierience. plus, he’s already found his next maradona: LIONEL MESSI

  • Anonymous

maradona was a very great player, to me the best that ever lived but he is not a good coach he has already been a coach in argentina, i think it was newells im not sure, but the point is that he didnt do a good. if he gets to coach this time maybe things will be better and to the people that say that the team will be full of maradona look alikes truste me it will not he has a great understanding of soccer

  • Jose Nunez

Are you kidding me?…Maradona a Coach??? OF ARGENTINA!?!?!?!?.

IT MUST BE OCTOBER ONCE AGAIN BECAUSE THIS IS PRETTY SCARY..

i dont see a future for the argentinian soccer coming if former soccer star maradona becomes a coach

  • Adam

Yes Yes Maradona is literally a god in Argentina, and that is why unfortunately I think someday he will get his chance to coach the squad. But I think it would be a huge mistake for the AFF to make that move, but it will all depend on how their very talented team does in the World Cup. We all know how easily a coach can get fired after a bad showing at the WC. If they have a bad showing, Maradona might get his chance…but I really hope not.

  • Ahmad firin

Maradona was a good player and he was super star on the world 1986,I think if he become a
coach of Argentina National Team, they may be have a good chance to win the next world cup
and I can say vote for Maradona=vote for World Champion of Argentina.

  • hola

maradona wasnt that good at soccer.

  • Christopher John

I aspire maradonna, he is going to make a successfull national team,he is the best player ever happened

  • Felipao

Maradona was the greatest soccer player of all time. Whoever doesn’t understand that does not know about South American football nor about his great skills as a player. I believe there is a different train of thought between thinking like a head coach and thinking like a player. I dont think he will be as effective as a coach.

  • carlos

maradona is a good player but i think he is to old to be a coach. And if he coaches Argentina and if they make it too the world cup they will lose and if they win IF they win a lot of goals will be with hands. HE SHOULD NOT BE A COACH.

  • J. Santiago

Too old to be a coach? Everyone that knows jack-all about football/soccer says he is one of the best ever to play the game. (If you only know Maradona by the ‘hand of god’ goal (which was a notorious and highly disputed ‘miscall’)you probably shouldn’t be commenting. The problem is that many great players are not good coaches in the sport. He has coached for only short periods with mixed results so far.Maradona was incredibly talented and smart (it allowed him to extend his career) but not necessarily the hardest training guy, so it was said. I think he definitely deserves a shot however.

  • Danny

Maradona is one of the best player of all time…he would be a great coach and he deserves that chance to prove himself as a coach,, that would be a motivation for any team because they will look him up as an example

  • bella

    yessssssss…hell yeah he should coach..hes the greatess…ARGENTINA GOL~!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • henry

I think Maradona should coach the Argentina team now that they are out of the WC 2006. He can coach them to victory in WC 2010 and become the second person to lift the trophy as a player and a coach!!! That would be amazing. I am not even an Argentinan (I am from India living in the US) and I love the Argentine Soccer team so much. Belive it or not people all over the world (I know especially in India where I come from) love the Argentina team and this is mainly due to Maradona. They never talk about the ‘Hand of God’ goal as Europeans always try to bring that matter up. We don’t like to talk about it because Maradona was far greater a player to be judged by one incident!!! Europeans always have the arrogant attitude and their arrogance does not allow them to accept Maradona… With that said it will be truly amazing to see him become a coach.. he would inspire the players under him (It was such a neat thing to see him in the stands wearing the team Jerseys and cheering on the team in Germany!!!) I am not sure any other great players have done that… To me Maradona is an inspirer. Believe it or not, Soccer is a lot about inspiration. I think he will be a great coach and will inspire the players and make the dreams of Millions of Argentine fans around the world come true!!!

  • nasir

maradona will bring world cup for many times as a coach.

  • Maradona Himself

make me coach….i’ll get wc2010….by the way about HOG goal..was every european sleeping before and after that goal that they didn’t see me play other games….anyways argentina soccer is my life and i’ll make it life of evry argentine player so that they fight for the wc with better conviction and dedication….and with messi in….

  • Gaz

Well am not sure who will be the next coach but I would prefer someone who knows what he is doing and can bring the WC Home as each player in the current Team deserved this WC06!

I am gutted and devestated by Pekermen who had done a good job, until they met Germany where they dominated and should have easily have won but stupid subs made by him to let germany in has ddestryed any hopes of the nation and he should be held respinsible!

He used the same damm excuse ‘Riqelme’ was tired as he did against England last Year in a friendly match when they were leading ENG. Finally, just so that the hosts always seem to get through even though they were outplayed in every dept until Riqelmi was sent off!

The game has been spoilt by FIFA/Officials/Sep Blatter who control the game and it will just get worse!!!!

  • Sugarbear

I dont like Arigentinains because they are racist. I am Brazil fun(and i am from Africa). I do like Mordona because he was one of the best players, offcoarse behind the great pele’. And i support Moracoca to be the next head coach of Arigintia. However, i hope he doesnt turn the team in a dope fines.

  • Santhira

I think once a person like maradona given the huge responsibility of coaching the Argentina team, it will naturally comes in his mind how to coach intelligently and bring back the WC cup in 2010. I have started watching WC in 1986 just because of maradona. We all have great confidence that he is the chosen one,to bring the cup back again….

  • Nizar

    ????????+Argentina=????????
    Maradona+Argentina=Argentina
    Argentina*Maradona=Worldcup 2010+2014

  • Maradona Fan

Yes …I vote for Maradona as the next coach. And I agree with my Indian friend.. back home in India ppl adore Argentina cuz of maradona. I think ppl who does not know anything abt him shud shut their hole and not leave some stupid one liners like ”he wasnt that good at soccer ”. Wrt to Hand of GOd … hey that was a cool goal;) .. besides..it was against the arrogant British who had occupied the Argentine colony not too long b4 that world cup. For more videos on Maradonas soccer skills go to youtube.com and search for Maradona. Wrt to him as a coach… y not! what has jose peckerman done! he didnt let MEssi play against the germans!! that was a tough team to play against and how can a coach not let a player like Messi not play!!! Crespo-Tevez-Messi-Riquelme should always be on the field for 90minutes!!. Maradona shud get back as a coach. that will be a gr8 moral boost for the Argentines to win the next world cup. btw…besides the coach, Argentina might wanna consider a new goal keeper too ;)

oops .. my comment replaced Nizars comment for some reason…site admin pls notice that..

  • mitsos

I really trust Maradona..he has been a great player and has no complex to put the real good ones in game..even if they are 19 yo..and definitely i trust him more than a guy that in his 2 subtitutes left puts in game Cambiasso(!!) and Cruz(!!!!!!)….I have never seen more tactical mistakes than those made by this guy in Germania – Argentina..

  • Cristian

I completely Agree with you regarding those substitutions. Why in hell would you wanna get rid of riquelme???? Everything happens because of him!! He is the tactics specialist I dont know what pekerman was doing? I am heart broken, you have no idea! First it was Italy 90 when we got ripped off by the referee!!!! And costs us our third world cup title. Now pekerman with his foolish mistakes!
I hope Germany doesn’t win it, and lose to Italy. Hey but at least Brazil and England didn’t make HEHE!! (Hate them too!) I’m picking Portugal, I want a team that has never won it.

  • mitsos

yes…cool…Italy won and the Germans finish here and their anti-football too..i’m very glad that England is off and i really liked both France and Portugal..Don’t worry about Argentina : In south Africa its ours!!! (hope we wont have a stupid coach again..)

  • gu gu bear

Maradona wasnt good at soccer and he wont be a good coach

  • about me

The Argentian fans who usually post on the soccer boards or myspace are the most racist fans ever, more than the skinheads and white supremarcists. True, not all Argentines are like that but such cases leave a bad impression in my mind.

Maradona was a great player but I still don’t like his hand of god goal. He should go ahead and coach his country’s team. If he loses 3 to 4 games in a row, they’ll replace him.

    The strategy will be 1-1-8
    It won’t work :)

  • sunny mohammad

he deserves to be the coach of Argentina and inshallah Argentina willllll winnn the next WC.

  • Arg at Heart

I dont think Maradona will make a good coach. I think Pekerman shud be given another chance at 2010. Ok maybe it was his mistake to take Riquleme off against Germany but come on just look how well Argentina played. I think they were the best team at the world cup definitely with the way they played. Give Pekerman a chance.

  • Ayala fan

Maradona in my opinion is the greatest footballer of all, he was just an extraordinary(out of this world) player at his best and the world of football has yet to see a player of his skill.

However, as a fervent fan of the Argentine football team I would personally have liked Pekerman to stay in the job: he knows what mistakes he’s made in WC 06 and he would learn from that and also the big advantage is that most of the team are young players, who will play again in the next world cup.
Maradona is a great footballer but he is a bit volatile and seems to be unreliable, i don’t think he’ll be committed to his job i can honestly see him quitting suddenly a few months after he’s taken charge as a coach, without any good reason…he’s that kind of a person…
The other great thing about him is the atmosphere he creates at the World Cup, man does he have passion for the game and his Argentine team, it’s a pleasure to see him jumping around, celebrating, i’m sure he boosted the players morale when he was there(he wasn’t at the stadium when Arg played Ger… so maybe…). All the old footballers are so boring i think…see Pele, Beckenbauer, Eusebio…etc. all in their suits and sitting quietly…Diego he puts his old Argentine shirt on and cheers the team on for 90 mins …that’s why he is special…he lives for football…

I really thought Argentina would win the World Cup this year but it didn’t happen…it just shows how hard it is to win that trophy, good players, good coach and luck is the ingredients you need to have on your side- they didn’t have the latter in WC 06 against Germany.
I will be supporting Argentina again in 2010 and i really want them to win, though i don’t think Maradona is the man for the job. Maybe one of the old Argentine greats can have a go this time and honestly i wouldn’t mind if Passarella has another crack at it… it’s too much pressure and expectation to coach this team…i hope they find the person who will take them all the way to glory in 2010…

  • Charlie

I think José Pekerman should reconsider his decision to quit as head coach for Argentina. He coached the national team for 2 years (not counting his experience as coach of the junior squads, with which he won 3 junior world cups), and I think he should be given more time. The team played better than I have seen it play in years. Argentina lost on penalty kicks – a situation in which sometimes even good teams lose. Maradona, while perhaps the best player in history, has coached at least two clubs in Argentina without great success. Unfortunately, he has a volatile personality and the position of national team choice deserves someone who is more serious and level-headed.

  • satisch ray hiera

marradonna should become coach of argentina. i think that he needs 2 or mor very professional assistants in his staff. Besides winning the 2010 worldcup he should
lay a strong foundation for the coming 20 years. argentina just needs to win some more worldcups. They
have a huge potential. marradonna is the best.

    have a nice day

  • Diego Rodriguez

Maradona as a coach will just have to happen… no one knows exactly how well he will do.. and NO argentina does not need a new goalie.. in fact we would have won against germany if we had abbondazieri.. he is an expert at penalty saving and to me he is one of the best goalies ever

  • Anonymous

diego should coach boca juniors first then argentina to prove himself

  • Diego

    I just need a chance as a coach. I proved myself everywhere I played, Spain, Napoli…World Cup…
    adios

  • Maradona at heart

I come from a continent far from Maradona’s I was a teanager and he made me love the game. He is the best player of all time, and we all know it. What he has achieved most players over the years will. for over 20 years, not a single player could Win a World Cup literally on their own as Mexico 86, not only has he inspired the whole team then as a captain but he gave them the victory. The Hand of God goal was completely erased minutes later when he scored his second goal by dribbling all the Brits one after the other including their goalie to score one of the best goals ever..We are talking ‘football’ here real talent. therefore, dumb people who dont know what football is talking about : oh this guy scored with his hand..just like a 5 year old! if the brits or others can produce a player then we will start to compare, truth is they never have. I agree he’s volatile, did not do so well coaching Neville in argentina, but with good mangers on his side, his rich experience of being on the football pitch and the inspiration he will give to each player (remember argentinian people see him as God) this guy as a coach will only go forward. South Americans have the talent no question about that, the just need the extra inspiration and support to get them moving. their 2006 team was a great one, so sad to see them leave, their coach just needed to add in that extra touch in offense maybe, even though his subitutions were drastic in the game against Germany, I still think he is a good coach coz his team was outstanding compared to recent argentina national squads and to the rest of the world teams. Maradona, the legend, is ought to be given a chance to coach, it might make argentina win another cup, it might be a phenomonal experience to the world!

  • Tahjay

Maradona is a very good player and should be coach, however people keep forgetting that he can only depend on his left foot. If a player gets the title of one of the best players, they should and must be able to use both feet. That is a reason why I laugh when people compare him to Pele.

  • giova * * * *

if he can get all the players to snort, they might be the team to beat in 2010

  • Alfredo Di Stefano

Pele, Cruyff, pushkas, beckenbauer, robson and all that lot are not to be compared with maradona since they were not as good. However Maradona as a manager is a completely different issue since his coaching abilities in the past weren´t successful.
