FC Barcelona have targetted Miroslav Klose as one their main summer signings and have already made tentative enquireies regarding the striker’s availability.
Werder Bremen are in the Catalan city for the UEFA Cup encounter with Espanyol on Thursday and the Bundesliga club’s president, Juren Ludger Born admitted he knew the Blaugrana were monitoring the situation.
“There has been no official contact, but we are conscious of the interest,” the German outfit’s supremo said on Catalunya Ràdio.
“Economically we have no need to sell him because the club is on a very sound footing.”
Txiki Begiristain, Barça’s technical secretary, is repsonsible for helping coach Frank Rijkaard bring in new players and he is a big fan of Klose.
After losing Henrik Larsson last summer, Eidur Gudjohnsen was seen as the Swede’s replacement, but the former Chelsea forward has failed to impress at Camp Nou.
A move last summer appeared on the cards for Klose before his value rose as he finished as the top goalscorer in the World Cup Finals.
German newspaper Bild have linked Klose to a summer move to Bayern Munich, but Werder have made it clear that they would not be keen on losing him to a direct rival.
The 28-year-old goalscorer has a contract at the Weserstadion until 2008, but could well be tempted to move to a giant of world football like Barça.
Next season Samuel Eto’o is set to miss around a month of domestic action as he represents Cameroon in the Afican Cup of Nations and the club want adequate cover.
Klose would undoubtedly recognise that any role at Barça would see him as a back-up, but with Javier Saviola set to leave he would see a fair amount of action.
