College Opporunities for Student Athletes

Show Me The Money!

A good education now costs over $100,000. Still, college costs are rising 6 times faster than family income. College costs have, since the 80s, risen even faster than health care costs! It is no longer possible to work your way through college, because part time jobs do not pay $25,000. A family simply cannot save enough for two or three college educations.

Time was, when only doctors were still paying off college debts at age 35. Now most students ... or their parents ... face a financial crisis the wipes out entire life savings. A good college for our children, the goal of every American family, is moving beyond the reach of more every year.

We are the Student Athlete Scholarships Foundation, a group of concerned coaches, parents and EUROSPORT,
Since 1991 helping student athletes get to college, and on the team … often with full scholarships. Our publications simply work. This article coaches families in the technique of selecting colleges that can offer the most generous financial aid packages to student athletes.

We don’t like the title of this article ... yet it does attract reader attention. But in these difficult times, more people need to find some way to pay for a college education that can cost as much as a house. The cost of college is increasing six times faster than family income ... it wasn’t supposed to be this way.

And with home owner equity and student loans becoming unreliable sources of cash for college, readers are telling us that our publications may be one of the last remaining ways to fund college education!

College coaches don’t like the title of this article either. Squeezed between unrealistic expectations of parents and university budgetary constraints, coaches somehow have to field winning teams every season ... or else ...

This article is NOT about how to pressure college coaches into offering scholarships. It IS about how to target colleges and coaches who NEED a player with your skills levels and, concurrently, how to PREPARE your player to qualify for money from the several different sources.

Remember, the college coach’s recruiting responsibility is to find and sign players who want to go to his school and want to play on his team ... AND are both academically and athletically qualified to do so. Welcome is the well prepared recruit who presents himself to the coach ... because that player has just done the most difficult portion of a coach’s work for him.

The three top priority jobs that you should take away from this article are:

1. Achieve the best athletic skills you can
2. Achieve the best academic skills you can
3. Target schools that recruit at your level

Begin early. The first two jobs are the responsibility of the players, the third job requires help from Mom and Dad. Begin jobs 1 and 2 at age ten, when good habits in school and on the field begin to develop. Begin job 3 before the player enters high school.

We love formulas. So here is our recipe for success in locating colleges that will be most generous.
Obviously, one should consider only schools that offer your sport at the varsity level. Our methods will work for any college varsity sport.

Not so obvious to some families we know who, after years of reasonable success in a sport, chose to ignore the college coach, only to be turned down by admissions. Remember it is the COMBINATION of excellence in a sport and excellence in grades that enables you to beat your competition for admission and scholarships. Why so competitive? It’s simple. There has been no new capacity added in college classrooms, while the number of applicants has increased by 35% since 1980.

So here is the formula that will lead you to the best fishing for financial help:

Look for expensive, private schools, with an excellent education and a weak team ... especially those colleges that have a source of funding.

EXPENSIVE: Don’t worry about the “list price” because the real out-of-pocket cost for a student athlete to Harvard is the same as that to Fresno State ... it is $1000 ... the cost of the food you eat plus the depreciation on your books. Don’t be mesmerized by the list price ... think only about whether the school wants your player enough to pay $1000 in cash for playing services.

PRIVATE: private schools have greater latitude in awards than state schools whose taxpayers can affect their decisions. Virginia, for example, strictly limits most scholarships to VA state residents.

EXCELLENT EDUCATION: that is the end game here.

WEAK TEAM: not so weak that you will be embarrassed to play for them, but weak enough so your skills will be sought after. Figure this out by attending games and studying the qualifications of their best players.

SOURCE OF FUNDING: money flowing into the top of your target school, like oil in your engine, lubricates all moving parts. Sources we can think of are:

1. Successful football and basketball teams

2. Endowment cash (Princeton has such a hoard that they could actually stop charging tuition)

3. Research grants - U of Southern Florida think tanks earn $148 million per year

4. Institutional backing - Uncle Sam funds 15,000 full scholarships at the five federal academies. Churches fund countless thousands of scholarships ... Notre Dame, SMU, Holy Cross and Baylor all believe in educating the whole person, i.e., educating BOTH mind and body.

Use our formula to target schools that will want you and have the means to meet your financial objectives. Sell yourself to those schools using our SYSTEM of publications available at
www.Student-Athlete.Net
These methods and publications have helped 1 million student athletes get to college and on the team ... many with full scholarships. Begin today and your kids could graduate from college debt free. Think about it.

Having been an Instep reader from the beginning and experiencing two recruiting situations in our family-I can say evrything he is saying is true. Practice, study, and be realistic and you will find the best fit for yourself. This whole thing is about the student finding the right school not parents and bragging rights.

This post is about where to fish for your scholarship.

For 30 years I worked as a sales manager in the computer and telecommunications industries. The most important skill I taught our sales people was "where to fish for customers."

Once they realized that 90% of the companies in the phone book would NEVER buy from us, they were on their way to concentrating on those that WOULD buy from us.

I always reminded them that a "Prospective customer" was one who had both 1.) a need for our product and 2.) the ability to pay for it.

Now they could clear their radar screens of everyone except real prospects.

In fishing for a soccer scholarship you must take the same approach. You must focus on the schools that are looking for a recruit at your level. Pat Grecco always says, 'Go where they want you."

Now PLEASE go back up to the article above, "Show me the money." and re-read it ... NO read it twice, then print it out and carry it in your wallet. Everything you need to know is there.

Remember this. The college coach's job is to win games. To do so he must find and recruit players who are both athletically and academically qualified to help him do his job ... by presenting him with a qualified and recruitable player ... he could reward your homework with a scholarship.

This was an excellent article and it was right on the money regarding finding colleges to play for.

"Look for expensive, private schools, with an excellent education and a weak team ... especially those colleges that have a source of funding."

A perfect example of one of these schools is Eckerd College in St Petersburg, FL. They are graduating two thirds of their starting team. They are looking to recruit experienced players at every position.
Eckerd looks expensive, but they give out tons of academic grants and scholarships to students w/ good grades. The Sunshine State Conference is a top Div 2 League that is home of some of the best D2 women's soccer programs. University of Tampa won the Natiional Championship in 2007.

With a beautiful turf field and outstanding facilities, Eckerd College is located minutes from St Pete Beach. If you want the opportunity to play big time college soccer at a school where you have a chance of starting your first year, take a look at Eckerd.

Great school, great location, Great weather(mid 70's all winter), great facilities in a super location.

If you want to play soccer in college this coming season, it's not too late to find a team that can use your skills.

Contact Coach Joe McCauley to talk with him about the program. He's a great Coach, and a nice guy!. Tell him Big Red sent you...
